So I'm a young, female, literature (not english) teacher in a private international school. I came half way through the year to replace a teacher that has been here for decades. My coworkers and higher ups have been impressed with my work, and nothing but super supportive. The kids themselves (above 12 y.o.) have been lovely as well, and for the most part, any issues I may have had with them have been sorted and I feel good about our relationships going forward.
The parents though.... This six months I have received angry emails for...
-Giving the student a bad grade.
-Traumatising the student with a bad grade (different parent).
-Giving a different grade to the two children of the same family.
-Assessing the students according to the national curriculum (I don't).
-Assessing the students according to the grade appropriate criteria.
-Not giving students points for analysis when they didn't analyse a text (after I had taught them how to analyse a text and given them assignments on it).
-Asking the students to say what they think metaphors mean (I teach literature).
-The parent not understanding the assignment (the child does)
-Making the students read more difficult literature they're used to (the book was chosen by the previous teacher).
-Using a poem that uses difficult language.
-Using chat GPT to generate an easy to read poem.
-Alluding to violence (eating) in a made up example.
-Confusing a student by NOT inviting them to take an exam when I knew they could not take the exam.
At this point I can't but laugh... Please share your most ridiculous parental comments, as we wish them farewell for another summer
