Are university students in competition with one another?

My university WhatsApp groups are full of fellow first years exchanging information about assignments, giving answers, some people have even sent in their whole assignment for people to copy for our Accounting and Finance module. These groups often have around 250 people in them.

It is quite infuriating to watch. Here in the UK people pay £9k a year to go to university, for what...? To have someone else answer questions for you?

The whole situation just doesn't make sense to me. I've tried to understand why I find it so frustrating, and as quite a competitive person I feel as though my efforts to learn things for myself and work hard at my assignments is being undermined by lazy people who can't be arsed to figure things out for themselves. What's more is these people sending in their work for others to copy are almost worshiped by the people who are benefitting from this. It seems borderline manipulative.

I am unsure of whether I am meant to feel this strong sense of competition with these people, or wither my individual efforts are independent of the results that everyone else is getting. I would appreciate people's comments... surely it can't be right?
