I need help understanding the positives behind so much emphasis on sports in school.

I want to preface this by saying I am not trying to insult any educational program. I grew up in Florida and now live in Alabama and work at a school. Florida ranks number 3 in education while Alabama ranks around 47. I have noticed several big differences in the schools. The biggest being how sports are handled. In Alabama almost every teacher is a coach. In Florida I never had a teacher as a coach. These coaches aren’t there with any interest in teaching. I work with them so I really know. Plus I know what the kids say who takes their classes. But when it’s talked about in conversation I feel like a black sheep for thinking the over emphasis of sports isn’t good for education. Everyone seems completely on board with sports being a priority. Help me understand. I also have strong feelings about the dangers of over taxing young bodies and the damage it does over time. But that is a conversation for another day.
