I'm going to start college this fall, and I need to schedule my placement tests. My problem is that I'm 37 and barely remember a thing from math class. I don't remember long division, for instance. I don't think it would take all that long for me to kinda remember that after studying a bit, but as far as algebra or anything goes, I seriously don't remember anything. I mean, I might be able to fumble through a little bit, but it's not looking great.
I get that the more classes you have to take, the more you have to pay for, but my main question about this is more if they even offer classes below a certain level. Like, can my placement test score be so bad that I just bottom out and can't even take a college math course and have to wait to go to school? Is that a dumb question?
I'm not really keen on studying very much for it, because A. I'm trying to start school soon and am also working, etc., but mainly because my math level is really not that great, and I feel like I'd have a much better grasp on stuff and be a lot less likely to not get lost if I have a stronger foundation. This was my problem in school: I never memorized my multiplication tables (another question I have is whether you're allowed to use a calculator...), and everything else suffered from there. As a result, math has always given me the heebie jeebies, and I'd like to fix that. Especially since I'm already really nervous about going back to school in the first place.
Thank you so much for any insight!!
