If research shows that providing a free first year of university education in the U.S. could save students $63.4 billion annually while costing only $331 million, does this prove that free education is financially viable?

Recent research has quantified the costs and savings of offering a free first year of university education in the U.S. Using open-source virtual classes and national exam proctoring, the total cost would be $331 million—less than 1% of the U.S. Department of Education’s annual budget. In contrast, students would save $63.4 billion per year in tuition and living expenses. Does this evidence prove that free education is financially feasible, or are there hidden challenges that make implementation unrealistic?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows whether is it possible to do a double degree in Ireland when your university doesn't allow you to do a second one / are there any websites which one can do another degree on (preferably not extremely expensive but I understand that that's usually the case)

Segregated schools

Trump orders Education, Labor and other departments to enhance school choice https://www.npr.org/2025/01/29/nx-s1-5279572/trump-orders-enhanced-school-choice

This only benefits the privileged families who can afford to choose. This is just another word for segregation. The wealthier white families want to be able to choose more affluent, wealthier schools while the poor families (mostly BIPOC) get stuck at schools where funding keeps getting cut. Here's an idea, maybe just stop defunding schools because kids grades are low.. maybe that is a sign that they need MORE resources not less? They also want "more babies" but want to cut access to food stamps, and other government help for women and children. School choice is the same. They want kids to be able to go to better schools but cut funding to the neediest schools. They have been dismantling education since "no child left behind."

Why group discussions are ideal for having the best scores in college

Many factors can be attributed to why preference to group discussion should be given including fostering a dynamic learning environment that goes beyond passive listening and rote memorization, leading to a deeper understanding of the material and better scores to enhanced understanding and retention

The kindergarteners I work with keep trying to play games like squid games

Today I caught my students trying to play ddakji and red light green light like squid games. Now I've seen the show and like it myself but considering their age is from 4-6, that show is highly inappropriate for them. I tried to put a stop to the games and took away their paper squares but the discussion around being the doll from the show and dying after losing a game keeps being an issue. I'm not sure how to go about this issue what i should tell them or do so that this isn't a focus when they play. Just to go on a little tangent I find it crazy that a game like red light green light is now seen as a part of squid games, when I was a kid it had nothing to do with that but now the students make that connection and a lot of them think it's from squid games no that it is a children's game.

Here are slides to help inform students about their rights and responsibilities when they have contact with law enforcement….law enforcement like ICE for example.

The slides were created for middle schoolers with a large population of ELLs and reflect the law in California. So you should probably copy and edit accordingly if you use them for your students

AI-Powered Learning: Less Work for Teachers, Better Results for Students!

Hello everyone!

My team and I are developing a new platform (and eventually, an app!) designed to transform the way kids learn and practice their skills, all while making life easier for teachers and parents.

Imagine this: A website where AI takes over the tedious tasks of creating unique practice questions and grading them, freeing up valuable time for educators and parents. That's what we're building!

Here's how it works:

Our platform uses advanced AI to:

Automatically generate personalized questions: Teachers and parents can specify the subject, difficulty level, and even the learning style, and our AI will create engaging questions tailored to each student's needs. No more spending hours creating worksheets!

Instantly grade assignments and provide feedback: The AI will analyze student responses, providing immediate feedback and identifying areas where they excel and where they need more practice.

Track student progress and performance: Detailed performance metrics are tracked over time, giving teachers and parents a clear picture of a child's learning journey. This allows for targeted intervention and support.

Separate Accounts and Classroom Functions: We offer separate accounts for teachers, parents, and kids, ensuring privacy and a tailored experience. Teachers can even create virtual classrooms, assign simultaneous tests, and manage their entire class through the platform.

Benefits for everyone:

Teachers: Reclaim your time! Focus on teaching and providing individual attention instead of being bogged down by administrative tasks.

Parents: Gain valuable insights into your child's learning and support their academic growth with personalized practice.

Kids: Enjoy a fun and engaging learning experience with tailored questions and instant feedback that helps them learn and grow.

We're seeking your valuable feedback!

We're passionate about creating a tool that truly empowers the learning community. We want to hear your thoughts, ideas, and concerns to make this platform the best it can be.

What are your biggest challenges when it comes to helping kids practice their skills?

What features would be most valuable to you as a teacher or parent?

What are your thoughts about AI in education?

Are there any potential downsides or concerns you see with this type of platform?

Any suggestions on what to name this project?

Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated! We believe that by working together, we can create a powerful tool that revolutionizes learning for the next generation.

Thanks in advance for your participation!

HELP! Looking for website to do "PenPals" with kindergarten classes

With my Colombian kindergarten students and a class of American kindergarteners, we are going to do a sort of language exchange over the next 4 months. We need a platform where they can download videos and pictures and be able to share with a partner. Ideally it will be easy to navigate for 5- & 6-year-olds. We don't want to do Canva or Google slides, as we want something the students can take more ownership of and with those programs the teachers would be held more responsible to put things together. It also needs to be free. ANY ideas are welcome! Thanks in advanced!!

Teaching Under White-Supremacy, an excerpt from bell hooks’ “Teaching Community”

“In our class discussion someone pointed out that a powerful white male had given a similar talk but he was not given negative, disdainful, verbal feedback. It was not that listeners agreed with what he said; it was that they believed he had a right to state his viewpoint.

“Often individual black people and/or people of color are in settings where we are the only colored person present. In such settings unenlightened white folks often behave toward us as though we are the guests and they the hosts. They act as though our presence is less a function of our skill, aptitude, genius, and more the outcome of philanthropic charity. Thinking this way, they see our presence as functioning primarily as a testament to their largesse; it tells the world they are not racist. Yet the very notion that we are there to serve them is itself an expression of white-supremacist thinking. At the core of white-supremacist thinking in the United States and elsewhere is the assumption that it is natural for the inferior races (darker people) to serve the superior races (in societies where there is no white presence, lighter-skinned people should be served by darker-skinned people).

“Embedded in this notion of service is that no matter what the status of the person of color, that position must be reconfigured to the greater good of whiteness. This was an aspect of white-supremacist thinking that made the call for racial integration and diversity acceptable to many white folks. To them, integration meant having access to people of color who would either spice up their lives (the form of service we might call the ‘PERFORMANCE OF EXOTICA’) or provide them with the necessary tools to continue their race-based dominance. For example: the college students from privileged white homes who go to the third world to learn Spanish or Swahili for ‘fun,’ except that it neatly fits later that this skill helps them when they are seeking employment.

“Time and time again in classes, white students who were preparing to study or live briefly in a non-white country talk about the people in these countries as though they existed merely to enhance white adventure. Truly, their vision was not unlike that of the message white kids received from watching the racist television show Tarzan (‘go native and enhance your life’). The beat poet Jack Kerouac expressed his sentiments in the language of cool: ‘The best the white world had offered was not enough ecstasy for me.’

“Just as many unaware whites, often liberal, saw and see their interactions with people of color via affirmative action as an investment that will improve their lives, even enhance their organic superiority. Many people of color, schooled in the art of internalized white-supremacist thinking, shared this assumption.

“Chinese writer Anchee Min captures the essence of this worship of whiteness beautifully in Katherine, a novel about a young white teacher coming to China, armed with seductive cultural imperialism. Describing to one of her pupils her perception that the Chinese are a cruel people (certainly this was a popular racist stereotype in pre-twentieth century America), she incites admiration in her Chinese pupil, who confesses: ‘Her way of thinking touched me. It was something I had forgotten or maybe had never known. She unfolded the petals of my dry heart. A flower I did not know existed began to bloom inside me […]. Katherine stretched my life beyond its own circumstance. It was the kind of purity she preserved that moved me.’

“The white woman as symbol of purity continues to dominate racist imaginations globally. In the United States, Hollywood continues to project this image, using it to affirm and reaffirm the power of white supremacy.”

Computer friendly activities for Math and ELA

HI! My district has transitioned to the state test for ELA and Math being fully online. I'm a math coach, but hoping I can help give both Math and ELA teachers ideas for ways to use the computer more in class. And I don't mean programs like IXL or Waggle - I mean regular classroom instruction, but using tools similar to that of the online state test.

Before getting into this - I know that school isn't about teaching to the test, but I'm leading a faculty meeting and my assignment is to do a session on test prep.

For example, the current practice in ELA really emphasizes a ton of highlighting and annotating, but obviously those features are super different online. What activities are ELA teachers doing to get students use to this?

For math, students are less inclined to show their work because it's so annoying on the online software to use the trackpad as a pen, also , there isn't even a space to show work for multiple choice.

Also, any suggestions on how to do some state test prep activities without just printing out previously released exams?

Thanks for any ideas!!

Can i reclass as a senior down?

I’m an athlete (17 years old) and currently a senior. I was supposed to be a junior, but I need an extra year for sports because I didn’t play football during my junior and senior years due to moving, which prevented me from participating. I had to join virtual school, and currently, it shows that I have 19 credits. However, my grades before I joined virtual school weren’t very good, so some of the credits I earned while in virtual school won’t count (I’m using Acellus). Would I be able to graduate? I’m planning on going to school in Texas. i’ll probably have around 15-16 credits in total

The Climate EdTech Tool That Can Help Navigate a World of Concentrated Power

Understanding climate change has never been more critical.

As power concentrates in fewer hands and shadows of authoritarianism loom, assessing information and building evidence-based discussion skills become essential, especially when engaging with diverse stakeholders. Climate change is a complex phenomenon with intricate webs of cause and effect, so there is no doubt that as power concentrates, it will spread misinformation that points fingers to generate content blaming it on targeted causes, such as immigrants, criminals, terrorists, or people who think differently from them.

Enter workshops.

I have had the fantastic opportunity of facilitating Climate Interactive simulations enough to marvel at their educational results. The World Climate Simulation, in particular, has captured my attention.

Let me share my experience with this powerful tool.

The World Climate Simulation by Climate Interactive is a powerful tool that allows participants to role-play as UN climate negotiators and explore the long-term impacts of their policy decisions. Using a computer model, the simulation provides real-time feedback on the consequences of choices made during mock negotiations, helping players understand the complexities of balancing economic, political, and environmental concerns in the face of the global climate crisis.

The simulation has been successfully run with diverse groups, from students to policymakers, demonstrating its versatility and effectiveness in promoting understanding of climate change and action.

Active learning experiences like these are essential for understanding and addressing the climate crisis.

Players develop critical thinking skills essential for navigating climate information by engaging with the simulation. Representing diverse stakeholders, from environmental advocates to industry interests, participants would learn to evaluate data, negotiate solutions, and understand complex global dynamics. Through this immersive experience, players would better understand the intricate web of factors influencing climate policy decisions.

World Climate Simulation is fantastic but has a few limitations:

  1. You need a facilitator with knowledge about how this works

  2. You need a minimum of about 20 people.

  3. You need to coordinate people.

The Future of Climate EdTech

Imagine an online simulation packed with engaging features designed to captivate and educate.

What if you could access an online platform to join people playing the game worldwide 24/7? What if you could choose which room to select? What if you could choose or create your initial conditions as a scenario? What if we make it even more gamified and role-induced so we have collective and national objectives?

The simulation could offer diverse scenarios, from urban planning and agriculture to deforestation, allowing players to explore the multifaceted nature of climate change.

These features would transform the learning experience, making it engaging and accessible.

Empowering individuals with this knowledge and skills is crucial for driving informed climate action. By making the simulation more accessible and engaging through an online platform, we can reach a wider audience and inspire more people to become active participants in addressing the climate crisis.

Opposite of pure sounds (teaching phonics)

Hi

I understand that the recommended way of teaching phonics (in UK at least) is to use pure sounds ie mmm not muh. I understand the logic behind this although not sure if it's so intuitive and gives some inconsistencies as letters like g are hard to pronounce without saying guh. Also unvoiced p is kinda hard to hear.

i'm wondering if the other way (puh, guh, muh) considered a different approach (and does it have a name) or is it just wrong? And how accepted as gospel is the pure sounds approach?

Thanks!

Middle School Science/Engineering Teachers: What Educational Toys Would You Like to See on the Market?

Hi everyone,

I'm a student at the University of Minnesota studying product design, and for one of my classes, I'm working on a project focused on creating educational toys for middle school students. Specifically, I'm interested in hearing from science and engineering teachers to get your insights.

What kinds of toys, tools, or learning aids do you think would benefit your students? Are there any gaps in the current market, or features you wish existed in educational toys or teaching aids that would make teaching these subjects easier or more engaging?

Here is a list of topics that I am planning to hone in on, so if you have an idea for one of these that would be perfect, but any feedback you have at all will be beneficial!

:How plants grow, How water pumps work, flow rate, pressure water flow and distribution, what makes certain shapes strong, Space Efficiency, Food Insecurity, Universal Design, Rapid Prototyping, Material Selection, Manufacturing methods, Physical making (hand/power tools), Nutrients and Water Chemistry, Water Quality and Filtration, Pest and Disease Management, Automation, Radiation and the Sun, Solar Energy and Photovoltaics

Your feedback will be super valuable in helping me design something that could truly support middle school learners and teachers!

Thanks in advance for your time and input!

First Course Cengage Book Adoption

Hello,

I was tasked with adding more to a programming course curriculum. I selected a cengage ebook for python.

I'm seeing the price and my bookstore has not updated the required materials. I'll contact again but classes start next week. In case, some students felt like it was short notice or too expensive for the ebook. Would it be fine to make it optional and provide free resources and select certain content from the Cengage book?

I'm worried now just since this course used to have the textbook as optional. I was advised to do a course adoption and update curriculum. As long as course objectives are met, then no hard book requirement should be fine?

Why did schools stop requiring showers after P.E. class?

USA secondary.

At some point, taking a shower after gym class was no longer required. I don't know why or when this happened. I do know school districts continued to build schools with showers in locker rooms, both team showers and general use showers.

I also know that some kids participate in gym class in their regular clothes and could really use a shower, but that's a different story

What year did the US make high School compulsory

I have read few books where 8th grade was all that was required and one had to save up to attend high school. I know my mother who attended high School in the early sixties was required to go to school until she graduated but I was just wondering at what point that kicked in.

MSW at Liberty University

I’m researching MSW programs and I can across Liberty University. I’m familiar with Liberty as I went to Christian schools from 2nd-12th grade and this school was heavily promoted as I got to high school (this was before online programs were as big as they were now). Ever since I started college, I’ve been to all secular schools as I needed a change of environment and I happen to enjoy my time being at those institutions. Now that I’m a year away from finally getting my bachelor’s after so many years, I’m looking for an online MSW program so I can continue my studies and eventually become an LCSW. I prefer a secular school, but I’m open to return to a Christian school if that means being able to get my degree online in my price range.

If there’s anyone in the program now or graduated from the program, what’s the curriculum like? Is the work material centered around Christ or is it similar to a secular college or university? I’m curious to know people’s experiences.

Can someone tell me why my school held on to my records?

I remember back in high school (Baltimore County) during a pretty depressing moment in life, i was in the guidance counselors office and she showed me this huge file of lots of my school work.

Apparently the school district had been collecting a folder full of my school work from when I first enrolled into public school. Stuff from 1st grade all the way up to 12th. It was the weirdest, but coolest thing ever? There were stories I’d written, math tests I aced, art I drew, etc. I remembered a lot of it very clearly and remembered how proud I was of the work when I had first completed it. It felt like a fever dream!!

She said I couldn’t keep it and that she wasn’t even supposed to show me but she wanted me to know how special I was because they don’t keep many students files like that.

And it definitely made me feel special! I thought maybe she was just saying that but she even showed me they didn’t even have enough storage room to hold on to everyone’s folders.

So I just want to know why were they doing that for? If anyone has any idea. And is it possible I can get this stuff back? It’s been 10 years since i graduated high school!

Catholic Admin Assistant Job, but not religious?

Hi,

I just wanted to ask some opinions on this subject. I am trying to get my foot in the door in the education field as an admin assistant. I have an office background (medical receptionist and then remote data entry+emailing people back and forth type positions).

I have applied to a ton of public school districts with no luck since those positions get so many applicants. Randomly I applied to this catholic school and got an interview this time around. I am just not too sure about it and would appreciate thoughts/experiences.

I used to go to lutheran school until transferring to public school after 3rd grade. My brother has a wife whos family is very religious as well, involves their kids in the church, and I respect them.

Personally, I am not religious. I am also part of the LGBT community. Should I still consider this position despite those differences? I would be respectful and follow their rules, I just don't know if its a bad idea. It wouldn't be a "stay here forever" type job, so i'm on the fence and unsure what to do. I wouldn't be in a teaching role giving lessons, but still ya know?

I'm so conflicted and the interview is in the next few days...helpppp

Should public school have more farming in the curriculum?

Having a green house for city school, or farms where the students in segments take care of crops through out the day.

Or another way is more field trips to farms.

In the country or suburban areas many schools have lots of empty land they could develop to be a small garden or larger farms.

Most people don’t become farmers but most people ARE disconnected from their food source. Learning about agriculture, cultivating a crop, and doing yard work helps increase physical activity, responsibly, and work ethic. It also gets kids in nature which has been shown countless times is a net positive for many people’s health and well being.

The farm can also be an extension to get kids more involved in the local community.

IMO that is incredibly valuable.

Most of the reason is that it’s not focused in the curriculum but also it can cost a lot of money.

I’m not sure about funding, that is a whole issue on its own.

In terms of schedule it would be treated like a regular class where groups of kids go in and farm for about 45 minutes and then move on to their next class and that goes from morning to afternoon.

But perhaps that has to do with how we allocate the money to education, but it’s mainly because there’s no money in the first place. I’m not sure but the sentiment for me is there and I wonder what you guys think?

Would requiring K-12 students to take many acting classes help them better decide on a future career, given that some jobs (e.g., teaching) require more acting skills than others (e.g., computer programming)?

A student who discovers through such classes that they are not skilled at acting might steer away from careers like teaching, which would likely be a wise decision.

I would like to be a military doctor and if I majored in biology and chemistry, that would be quite useful. Sick time for Supers?

So…a local superintendent is retiring with a half-a-million severance and the Board is explaining that part of this comes from unused “sick time.”

Why would a super get paid for sick time unused? Like…if a teacher is out, a school would theoretically need a sub.

But if a super is sick, they would just have to reschedule a meeting or do it virtually. They might miss a meaningful board meeting. They might not be in to sign a time-sensitive document maybe? But it’s not like the district has to pay for a substitute (or the super can’t just have their secretary sign for them if something is super time-sensitive).

Just feels like another way to boost a super’s salary without just coming out and saying they’re going to make more than their salary. Same with district’s providing a “work car,” which is a fancy way of saying, “We are paying for our Superintendent’s car and gas.” (My district does that so I assume others do.)

So a super might make $200k a year but really much, much more with all the perks (extra money for not taking sick days, no car payments, not needing to buy gas, plus having their full retirement paid with no personal contribution).

Can someone explain to me any defense of this happening? If I don’t take sick days, I save the district money by not needing a sub. If a superintendent misses a day with a chest cold, absolutely nothing of value is lost.

How Do You Keep Up with Notes Without the Stress?

Ever feel like taking notes is more stressful than it should be? Whether it’s a lecture moving too fast, a meeting packed with details, or one of those genius ideas that pops into your head at the worst possible time keeping track of everything can feel impossible.

That’s why I started using VoiceNotes 360, and honestly, it’s been a game-changer. Instead of scrambling to write everything down, I can just talk, and it transcribes my words in real-time. I love how it takes the pressure off and lets me actually focus on what’s happening.

Here’s what I’ve noticed so far:

  • It works anywhere: Whether I’m in a noisy café or a quiet office, the recordings come out crystal-clear.
  • No language barriers: I’ve even used it to take notes in other languages it translates as I speak!
  • Editing is a breeze: I can go back, play my recordings, and tweak the transcripts to make them exactly how I need.
  • AI tools that save time: There are so many features for organizing and refining notes. I’ve used them to clean up my meeting summaries, create outlines for projects, and even brainstorm content ideas.

It’s made me wonder why I spent so long doing things the hard way!

What about you how do you manage notes? Are you more old-school with pen and paper, or do you use tech to make it easier? If you’ve tried tools like this, what’s been your experience?

I’d love to hear what works for you and share ideas. It’s always fun to learn how others handle the same challenges!

How College AP and IB Policies Make it Harder to Graduate Early

At the Fordham Institute’s FlypaperChester E. Finn Jr. explains that institutions of higher education are limiting the ability for students to apply AP and IB exam credits toward a degree, resulting in the payment of more tuition fees.

Finn adds that although many universities and colleges don’t count the credits, they still use them for exemption and placement so that a student can avoid encountering repetitive subject matter.

At bottom, Finn argues that at a time when higher education should be easing the financial burden on students and maintaining its rigor, its “handling of AB and IB results is both bad in and of itself and bad for high schools, where those challenging courses typically represent the apex of what’s academically possible and where the chief incentive for doing all the hard work that they entail is to get a head start in college.”

Read the full piece here. Might there be other, more defensible reasons that some colleges refuse to apply AP and IB credits toward degree requirements, or is this simply bad policy from institutions of higher education?

Online courses that award high school credits? Advice needed for autistic student.

I work closely with an autistic student with pretty intensive needs. They are moving into year 12 and will be following a high school diploma pathway, but my school delivers these within an IB environment. i.e. full on lectures with little differentiation or time to consider the high school students. Ugh! I would like to find some online high school courses that will allow them to gain HS credits at their own pace, and ideally allow them to present their learning in a variety of formats. Does anyone here have any ideas or suggestions? Many thanks!

Having a tough time with a high school teacher

I would appreciate any advice on this difficult situation my daughter is in.

My daughter is a junior in high school. She generally makes the honor roll and is in a highly competitive magnet program in a Title I school.

Last quarter, when we received her report card, we discovered she failed history because an in-class, written test was never received. The school has moved to a new portal system that is really confusing. Possibly if we had known where to look or read it right, we would have had some warning.

I contacted the teacher and we talked about making sure it didn't happen again. I got the dates for all in class tests, and texted my daughter after those classes to confirm they were handed in/received by the teacher. After taking a in class quiz, and then an in class exam a couple days later, I noticed that the quiz was marked missing in the portal. I told my daughter she had to follow up with her teacher, but my daughter was reluctant to (kids usually are). She said she probably just hadn't entered the grade yet. When she did finally ask the teacher if she had received the quiz, and more importantly, the exam from a few days later, the teacher said, "If you handed it in, I have it. If you didn't, I don't. All the grades are in the portal. If there's no grade, it's missing." We looked and saw that only half the work for the quarter was graded, therefore all missing.

At this point I wrote to the teacher and cc'ed the guidance counselor and principal, asking if the exam had been received. It took five emails to get an answer to the question, but the teacher did finally say she had the exam.

Over Christmas break, my daughter worked on the missing assignments, which she was mad about because she remembers doing them. I told her that this isn't the last time in her life she is going to be in a situation she feels is unfair, but she has to create a paper trail to cover herself. Ultimately, she wants to pass the class and be able to go to college.

After the break, she submitted all the missing assignments, emailing the teacher with a list of all the work for the quarter, indicating what had already been received and what she was submitting now. She asked the teacher to let her know if she missed anything.

The teacher thanked her for the assignments, said all the work was now graded and in the portal, and that she has until 1/15 to resubmit or make anything up. When we looked in the portal, only one of the recently submitted assignments was there, and she received a failing grade. The exam is still not graded in the portal, which she had told us previously meant that she didn't have it.

I'm just at a loss. The principal and guidance counselor have not responded, except to tell me that if my daughter attempts to document her exams before handing them in (by photographing them) that would be a violation of academic integrity.

Educators out there, how would you like a parent to handle this?

How should I approach getting a degree in Wildlife/Animal study

Greetings all! Lately I’ve been considering starting to study to be able to get into learning more about Wildlife Animals and Zoology maybe. I’ve always really been fascinated by animals, preferably not domesticated pets.

I’m 25, almost 26. I have a job that I’ve been improving greatly in for the last few months that makes a pretty average wage. I graduated with a BS in Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics, but shortly after realized I really wasn’t enjoying the typical software engineering work and just wasn’t happy at all. As I continued my work I came to realize that wildlife greatly interests me, and I actually feel happy around it. In some ways, I wonder now if it’s actually my “calling.” However, I already have a degree, and I’m not in student loan debt right now so I’d rather not be if I can avoid it. I was considering looking into starting to take classes through a community college to possibly get an Associates degree then eventually go into a university for another 2 years. If I’m able to transfer my classes I’ve already taken, that should minimize a lot of prerequisites for English, Math, History, etc.

What do you guys think? Is it far fetched to think going for an associates in a community college is worth looking into? Or should I just not even bother trying to get into college for another degree?

Thanks for your help on this!

My nephew refuses to bathe

Good morning I have a 39 year old sister who lives alone with her 15 year old son. The latter never had a passion for showers but he did it regularly.

However, for the past few months, he hasn't been able to shower, so he doesn't smell good.

The result...complaints from his teachers and students in the class about his body odor, summons from my sister to get financial aid to buy more clothes. But that doesn't solve the problem of having to shower!

So here I am not saying this to show off my nephew or my sister, I am not judging the situation. A question remains: what are the most common/probable reasons for categorically refusing one's own personal hygiene? I thought about abuse from my sister? School bullying? Depression ? In short, can you share your experiences with me and if you have any answers or solutions, I'll take them! Thanks in advance.

At this point, all the teachers left in the profession are either brand new and figuring it out, or are truly still here for love of the game. Everyone else has left for greener pastures. I wish parents would consider this when they accuse me of “bullying “ their child. Yes sir, I’ve stayed in this job for 15 years because I love money and hate kids. You have me pegged.

What masters degree is worth it as an international student?

I recently graduated with a bachelor’s in multimedia technologies(graphic design, 3d UI/UX, animation) and now idk what should I pursue a master’s degree in.

I come from a third world country so I’m planning on doing my masters in the US. After coming to reddit I found that master’s in Digital Marketing is completely useless since experience is more desired in the job industry(which is doomed).

I want to gain more knowledge/experience in the creative field whilst supporting my family which is why I long gave up on pursuing anything major art focused and switched to designing.

As an international student with mediocre skills my chances of getting good paying jobs in fields like graphic design, editing, art is nearly impossible. IDK if I’m being too paranoid but it would be really helpful if someone could share their experience who comes from similar situation as mine.

What masters degree would be better pursuing as an international student? (Please dont say STEM, I cannot handle maths or science, coding)

Edexcel igcse.

Hello. Am nearly done with edexcel igcses I've only one subject left. I have received all As until now and am expecting an A* in chemistry. I have only maths left to attempt. I was recently told by someone that edexcel is less acceptable in unis than Cambridge. Is that true? Hiw much will it matter that i chose edexcel in my igcses? Secondly should I choose cambridge in A levels so I have more options open to me internationally?

Education question

Say I graduate and have my bachelors in mechanical engineering then a year later I go back to get my electrical engineering degree… Do I have to start all over. Another 4 years? Do I just pickup at specialty courses for the specific discipline? No general ed really as long as I already meet requirements?

Not really sure how it all works?

Thank you!

Middle School Science Curriculum; Who is teaching one that they like?

My district is thinking of changing our middle school science curriculum provider. We are currently using Lab-aids and are not exactly happy with it. I looks like the district is slated towards OpenSciEd.

What are people's opinion are they good? Is there any curriculum out there that you have used that you love? Thanks for your input!

What’s the biggest challenge in making learning resources more accessible for everyone?

As someone passionate about education, I often think about the barriers people face when trying to access quality learning resources. Whether it’s paywalls, confusing platforms, or lack of credible options, it seems like there’s a lot that could be improved.

I’d love to hear your thoughts:

  • What do you think is the biggest challenge in making learning resources more accessible for students, educators, and lifelong learners?
  • Are there tools or platforms you’ve found particularly helpful—or frustrating?

Looking forward to hearing your insights and ideas!

Free English school textbook

Hello everyone. Is it possible to download free school textbooks of English (I mean English as a subject. I wonder how native speakers study it at school) for students from 1st to 12th grade, which are used in countries where it is native? Now I am looking for Australia, Great Britain, Canada and the USA, I found only samples from Australia on 20 pages.

Exploring AI s role in promoting active recall learning methods - Educator feedback needed

As someone interested in educational technology, I've been researching how AI can support active recall learning methods in education. I've developed a tool that automatically converts educational materials into practice questions to promote active learning instead of passive reading.

I'd love to hear from educators:

- How do you currently implement active recall in your teaching?

- What challenges do you face in creating practice materials for students?

- What are your thoughts on using AI to support personalized learning?

- How do you balance technology integration with effective pedagogy?

The goal is to understand how we can better support both teachers and students in implementing evidence-based learning strategies like active recall and spaced repetition.

Submission Statement: Starting this discussion to gather educator perspectives on AI-assisted active recall methods in education, and how we might better implement these research-backed learning strategies in practical teaching environments.

Students being behind in Public Ed and in General

Hi, I am a freshman in college writing an article, and I wonder if I could get some insight from educators and those who have more knowledge of the subject than I do.

I am doing this article on the reform of public education from the viewpoint of a conservative. I agree with most conservative viewpoints on reform, except for the notion that these institutions have the means to provide an adequate education. They do not, and with the massive cut of public education beginning due to the Vietnam protests, we have seen our literary standards go to complete and utter disarray.

If we were to compare where a high school graduate was in terms of literary standards in 1960 compared to 2024, it would be night and day. Before the deregulation, largely thanks to Reagan, students back then, public high school graduates even, would have the literary mobility to gain fluency in the classics or another language, while today remedial English is being taught in the undergraduate classroom.

And along with that, we can also consider social media, as the unrestricted access to these platforms has resulted in these children's dopamine receptors and attention spans being practically destroyed. This is largely a parental issue, as we need to promote literary standards in our homes, as opposed to simply allowing one to be on social media at such a young age.

I come from a low-income household, and I am in a better literary situation than most high-income children in my area due to my love of reading and retaining information. This is opposed to them, as they don’t have the attention span to read a book, let alone the articles I write. It isn’t due to a lack of cognitive capability; it’s simply a poor attention span that causes this issue. So, this isn’t a socio-economic issue; it is largely variable with interventionist parenting, making it essential for children like myself to have the initiative to read and retain information.

There are even articles I have read where it is said that Harvard students don't have the attention span to read a book, and another where it's said that there is a positive correlation with the literary standard of the children of parents who read books regularly. I will link them below. I would just like some insight on this, as I’m obviously not an educator. Could we also fix this in terms of curriculum, or is this a solely political and generational issue as aforementioned? I also do understand that the pandemic definitely didn’t help when it comes to where students stand.

Articles in Question:

It’s Time for Harvard Students To Pick Up a Book | Opinion | The Harvard Crimson

Harvard students are graduating 'without finishing a book - The Telegraph

Parent’s Role in Promoting Reading Habits among Children: An Empirical Examination - University of Nebraska at Lincoln (Though it's a long read, it does help support the correlation that was mentioned above.)

How Interactive STEM Activities Can Make Education More Approachable and Impactful

We do presentations featuring Pyrocystis fusiformis, a bioluminescent algae species, to teach students about ocean ecosystems and conservation. The hands-on and visually engaging approach is so much more captivating than a traditional slideshow—I know presentations like this would’ve gripped my attention much better in school. Every time we do one of these chats, the awe and wonder on both child & adult faces is clearly there to be seen.

With attention spans not at their highest, we should strive to make education more approachable and engaging. Unique experiences like this not only activate curiosity but also help students connect with the material on a deeper level.

What are some other ways we can make STEM education more interactive and inspiring for students? I’d love to hear your thoughts or experiences!

Types of educational videos

I have been trying to learn new and somewhat random topics online. Some are formal lectures, some are just narrated videos with some cgi (think historical documentary), some are a person presenting solo, and some are dialogues. I am curious if anyone has opinions on which format they prefer or learn best from? Also which tend to be the worst formats?

My personal ranking is: 1)lecture 2) dialogue/interview 3)solo (i.e recorded from zoom versus physically presenting in a classroom) 4) narrated

I think lectures seem very realistic and engaging. I just get sucked in. The narrated videos just get boring and I start to see through them. Dialogues and interviews can be the best but sometime the interviewer isn't involve enough.

Alternative Public Schools & Traditional Education

In our city in Washington State there are 10 different 'alternative' schools, covering needs for everything from special education to behavioral issues and optional programs like "project based learning."

Not one of the alternatives offered is traditional education where students have limited access to screens & phones, despite increasing evidence that allowing school children access to phones and laptops during school hours is having a concrete negative impact on outcomes:

Electronics in Classrooms Lead to Lower Test Scores

Misguided Use of Ed Tech Is A Big Problem

New College Students Can't Do Fractions

Students Who Use Digital Devices In Class Perform Worse In Exams

Students Increasingly Unprepared For College

Students Are Entering College Unable To Block

Digital Distractions In Class Linked To Lower Academic Performance

Are there any alternative education options anywhere in the US that offer this option?

If not... why not?

Why allow so many other alternative approaches to education but not one option for the method proven for generations to work at least relatively well?

NOTE: I'm not advocating for removing tech from all the schools, just wondering why there's so much public funding for alternative education experiments but seemingly zero for traditional education.

Wouldn't all the students then want to wear masks as well? After all, they need their brains in peak form at school.

Due to new circumstances, I am interested in what US universities offer good (or okay) fully online CS Bachelor’s Degrees

I am currently attending University of Texas at Dallas (just finished first semester). For circumstances I won’t go into, I want to find a uni where I can get a on-par or close to education. My main concern is cost and the ability to be entirely online. If there is also research or internship opportunities, that would be excellent. Side note, if switching majors might be something to think about, please let me know. Thank you

Advice on which major to choose.

Hey everybody! I wanted to get a little advice about which direction i should go. I enrolled back to school for spring 2025. I currently work as a lead cook. Ive been cooking for 8 years now. I am tired of the kitchen. Im definitely passionate about it but i cant see myself working in the kitchen in my 40s if i never make it to executive chef. Climbing up this ladder has been tough. I want to live the private chef life but still having trouble putting myself out there.

At heart I know that i am an artist. I am not made for white collar careers. But now that I am mother who only plans to have 1 child. I stress about my future now more than ever.

I am 33. I need to make a move😪I chose nutrition and culinary management as my major because i figured it would make my resume stronger along with my experience. I thought about doing other jobs like food and beverage manger, dietician etc things of that nature since it still aligns with my love for food.

Im just not sure. Should i keeping wallowing in the hospitality/service industry or go for a more lucrative career? The problem is idk what else i would be good at.

Business admin, accounting, tech, entrepreneurship is where i have interest as well. I think i get a little intimidated with these majors because i think i will fail. I want to choose a career I'd enjoy, not just do it for the money. My ultimate plan is to get into a high paying career so i can fund my business in the long run and have more time on my hands to create and travel!

Is my high school d fake?

I am from a Nordic country, I took an online high school course in 2021, which is called AlU high school Florida, and in 6 months I was done with it.

The reason why I'm thinking that it might be fake because, when I applied for the school the teachers were so kind and gorgeous, answering all calls and emails, but since I paid the $2500 for the course, nobody did answer my emails, I did contact another students and they have the same problem. Also if I did study in my home country, it would probably take me 3-4 years to complete my high school program, but I think 6 months is too short.

The only time they answered me when they had to send my diploma, and l asked them for an online copy as well, but they told me that I need to pay extra for that.

I wanted to attach an attachment but this community doesn't allow it.

Could you please help me figure it out?

Pursuing Career Change into Education (Help)

Hey everyone, I’m curious about when I should look into pursuing an EDD. I have a bachelors in business and a masters in information systems. I started my career in management consulting & most recently wrapped a role as a business analyst. In between this I’ve had experiences where i substitute teacher and did some teaching for Americorps in undergrad. I currently have committed to pursuing teaching full time and want to set out on a roadmap for advancement before I get started.

Any tips?

Okay or not?

My son is a 7th grade student in a Pennsylvania private school. His language arts teacher, who we'll call "Martha" for simplicity sake, is in her mid 60's. 2 days before the Christmas party, she assigned a paper to the class. My son finished the next day and tried to turn on the assignment, though Martha intercepted the paper before he could turn it in. She looked it over and told him that he had to re-do it, highlighting some sentences and providing no further explanation on what to fix. When my son went to redo the assignment, he didn't know what he needed to fix, so he was not able to turn in the assignment by the deadline of the Christmas party. This afternoon, he went back to school. 5 of the 12 students in the classroom faced the same issue. These 5 students were not allowed to turn in the assignment and required to do another assignment, which was arguably more difficult, for half credit. They also received zeros on the paper. I personally believe my son should receive a grade for the work he completed, and that it is not his fault that his teacher denied the paper without explanation. Is this okay? Should I contact the teacher or the administration?

TL;DR: My son's teacher turned away an on-time assignment without explanation and made him redo it. He couldn't finish on time and received a zero. I do not agree with this and want to know if this is okay/appropriate.

Thank you, folks!

P.S. Don't know if this is the right flair. Hoping it is?

Guidance Counselors: Can a Elementary Counselor Write and Publish Novels? Issue with Licensure or Contract?

Hello everyone -- I'm looking into joining the field, and I'm very excited about the prospect of being a school counselor, particularly for elementary and middle school students. However, I am a bit concerned given recent book bans and changing legislature, as I am someone who enjoys writing novels, and hopes to someday have them published. Does anyone know if this will be problematic? Will I be fired or lose my licensure if I publish an adult novel (fantasy and mystery novels with somewhat adult themes)? Is there anything regarding this sort of thing in your contracts?

Sorry for the long post -- several hours of searching Google have left me feeling anxious. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Would having students pair up a week before each test and calculating their test scores as the sum of their own and their partner's encourage them to help each other study?

Although paired for the purposes of studying and test scoring, they would take the tests independently.

They could choose a different partner for each test. If there is an odd number of students, a group of three could be allowed.

Building a tool to quickly generate abbreviated schedules for teachers.

As a teacher, I know firsthand how often unexpected schedule changes—like assemblies, special programs, or testing days—can throw off the whole day. For example, my school does MAP testing three times a year, and it always disrupts the regular schedule. Add in other last-minute interruptions, and I often found myself scrambling to create an abbreviated schedule on the fly.

After years of this, I finally thought, “Why not build something to make this easier?” That’s why I created an iOS app specifically for elementary and middle school teachers to handle these situations seamlessly.

Here’s how the app works:

  • Set the start and end times of your schedule.
  • Add any pre-set events (like lunch or electives) that can’t be moved.
  • The app automatically generates equal class periods within those bounds, keeping the pre-set events intact.
  • You can then save, share (as text, or even via QR codes with other app users), and set alerts for class changes if you'd like.

Does this sound useful to you or anyone you know? I’d love to hear your thoughts, and if you’ve faced similar challenges, feel free to share your stories or suggestions!

Education Resources

I love learning. If it was financially possible I would continuously be pursuing a new degree. I have a bachelors in a monetarily useless subject. I have tried to start a masters program with several different subjects many times, but life situations and finances never allowed it to work out.

In today’s world, I just don’t feel like it makes sense to invest money in a degree, at least for most subjects. Again, I would love to have degrees but I cannot justify the cost. Do you have any educational resources that are high quality and don’t cost an exorbitant amount? It doesn’t have to be free, but that would be great.

The topics that I am most interested in learning are any type of science/math, history, spirituality/religions, translating ancient languages, Ethical Business, and Regenerative Agriculture.

TIA

An Idea To Combat AI Generated Content In Schools

I believe that the best way to combat whether or not someone's work is authentic or at least having gained the information of the project is to bring back discussion as a larger aspect of the classroom. This simple way would ensure the student can vocalize their thoughts and defend their perspective or discuss in a deeper manner. However, admittedly, it would be unfair for those who are not strong public speakers and would not be a full solution.
