Degree Subject Difficulty (UK)

I get the impression from some people that degrees are all the same, no matter the subject. I've been trying to find some hard facts about it online but have come up fairly short. Despite this, several people I've spoken to have seemed to suggest that merely having a degree is what matters and that subject isn't a factor at all. Can one really say that a degree in childcare, for example, is the same as a degree in physics (or most other hard sciences)? Surely not. It's honestly a little depressing. Subjects should be treated differently. Someone who has just completed three years of a degree which consists of difficult abstract theories, data analysis and policy/governance aspects should not be compared to someone who does childcare... And yet in this era of relativism I'm bound to get a few posts here saying otherwise.

Edit: to be absolutely clear, this isn't about university reputation.
