Should I get my GED even though I graduated HS? Will the GED score override a poor GPA?

Here's the deal. I didn't do well in school, and I mostly blame myself for that fact; I was not the most focussed student. The only excuse I can plead is that was homeschooled (I was badly bullied in public school), and as we were poor, most of the resources we used for my high school education were free or improvised, and consequently, of lower quality than may have been advisable. My GPA is below the standard that most universities will accept, and since I don't have any teachers who can write me letters of recommendation, I'm pretty much sunk unless I come up with another option. Do you think that getting a GED will help, even though I have a diploma already?
