We have to ask ourselves, how much money would we be willing to make in order to be called a fucking cunt whenever we tell a kid to put their cell phone away? And not be able to do a damn thing about it.
To have a parent bypass the office and corner us alone in our classroom to yell profanities at us over some fairytale his kid told him about how we purposely lost all of his assignments?
To have the principal explain to us that we teachers are wholly responsible for setting up our own classroom PBIS system - even though the school district has promised every year for the last nine to set up a district-wide MTSS with PBIS, and took the federal grant money to do so? That it's just too hard to do at a district-wide, or even school-wide basis. All behavior issues are up to each individual teacher so figure it out. (Would have been nice to know in advance)
To call the office because a kid with an IEP for emotionally disturbed is throwing chairs and the one and only adult, the teacher, has to both clear the classroom of the other 33 students and yet still monitor the kid - and all the teacher gets is voicemail?
To be unable to take family leave to take care of the teacher's 86 yo mom who broke her shoulder while walking her dog because the district had to beg every available sub to work as a full time teacher in order fill enough core teaching positions so as to function?
I/we could go on and on.
I took a terrible financial hit by retiring early, and I just don't care. I'm now a fill-in at the restaurant I used to work at 25 years ago. If I wait tables, I make $50 an hour, which is a damn sight more than I made as a teacher when I count all the effing hours I worked. People are a lot nicer to their waiter than they are to a teacher.
