What Private Equity is Doing to Childcare

Is the "learning loss" over breaks an illusion?

I wrote an article about this recently, the gist of which is that if knowledge retention from school is about 50% after three years, the relatively small effect sizes of the "summer slide" and pandemic-related school closures should be interpreted as students forgetting what they would've forgotten anyway, after graduation. Since post-graduation retention is mostly what we care about as an educational goal, it's not so much that test scores are worse after summer break, but that they're more accurate after summer break.

In theory, by making courses shorter breaks are also hurting students' ability to learn in depth, and depth also improves long-term retention. But in practice, I think depth is difficult-to-impossible with subjects the student doesn't have an affinity for, and the best way for someone to study something they have an affinity for is, often, the kind of unstructured learning that happens more in summer enrichment activities than school proper.

So, if anything, summer breaks should be longer, with the money saved going into subsidizing optional educational activities and day care over break. Am I missing something?

Hesitation between two master programs

Hi everyone,

I am at a point where I want to study more but can't chose between 2 masters programs:

One is Data science and modelling and the other is Financial engineering.

As you can guess from my two possibilities, I like crunching numbers and math in general, but I can't make a decision.

For my background, I have 2 bachelors, both in Business Administration but one is from a Chinese Uni and the other from a French Uni where I took many finance classes. I am currently in my mid 20s and working in a big4 as a Financial controller.

Can you guys help me on which one to choose for future employment and future opportunities since I think both of these line of work are prey to AI thinning the ranks of workers.

Thanks a lot!

PS: sorry for the bad English, I'm not a native speaker.

What might be my future job if I decided to major in 2 courses?

Before I start, I just want to say that English is not my first language. So I apologise for any mistake I might make. Here we go. Hello, Reddit! I am still in high school, but I am planning to plan what courses should I take in college to major in. My plan is to major in 2 courses, in Technology and Business. My first plan was to major in Technology 'cause I am more interested to that. But the thought of having a degree in Business is stuck on my mind. If I decided to major in these 2 courses, what might be my job in the industry of Technology and Business? Any suggestions or advice is great. Thanks! As of right now, I am currently studying Python right now and I would like to improve my knowledge in Python.

Got bad grades all throughout school because of severe mental health issues, can I still get into a good uni?

I'm in year 11 and I will be studying seriously this year, I can confidently say that I'll get good grades in the subjects I'll need in my profession at least, but I realize that my GPA is absolutely ruined, i didn't study in school for multiple reasons, I need to get my life together this year and I'm wondering if i have a decent chance of getting into a relatively good university, if not, what other options do I even have?

Educational Therapy - Good? Effective?

I have tutored for about 7 years and I love a lot of it. There are times, however when I feel like I am not up to the task of giving the holistic kind of help that certain students need.

Any thoughts on education therapy? Are any of y'all educational therapists? I have read about it recently and it does seem to approach learning/mentoring from the holistic approach that I'm looking for.

I haven't been able to find anything on its effectiveness other than the ed therapy companies themselves saying so. I wouldn't want to get into the feel or try doing a masters in it if I wasn't pretty sure that it was doing good for the students.

I used to struggle with making learning a habit - so I created an app that makes it fun and easy

Summary if you’re not interested in the story:

Because I had trouble staying consistent with learning I built an app called Runway which helps you learn everyday and turn it into a habit.

The app is for free since I don’t want to charge for learning and is available on iOS (Android coming soon).

The story (why we built Runway)

Hello! I’m Bryan, a software developer who has always been passionate about learning but found it hard to stay consistent with it. I tried countless apps that promised to make learning easier and habitual, but I often lost interest after a few days because they either felt too overwhelming or just weren’t engaging enough. It made me wonder if I was the problem…

At the beginning of the summer, my friend Jacob and I decided to dive deep into understanding how people can make learning a daily habit. We read numerous articles and some of the most popular books on the science of learning and habit formation. Through this journey, we uncovered so many insights that completely transformed how we approach learning, and we wanted to share these insights with others.

Since I am a developer and Jacob is a talented designer, we decided to turn our vision into reality with an app that could make learning not just effective, but also fun and easy to stick with.

Simplicity

First and foremost, we wanted to create an app that was simple to understand and fit into everyone’s day - no matter how busy. And we think we’ve created just that - you can learn something fascinating every day in 2 minutes without it feeling like a chore. We’ve made the app as intuitive, & beautiful as we can so learning just feels natural.

Streaks → Knowledge

We know streaks are already a pretty common idea in apps - and we know they can have their downsides. We know about the anxiety that comes with a streak and we’ve made ours as forgiving as possible. Runway’s streaks aren’t about just checking off a box every day - we believe habits are the most important part of learning and so they’re designed to establish habit. The more consistent you are the stronger your streak grows and it’s a nice way to see your progress in a way that isn’t stressful.

Pricing

I want the concept of the app to be completely free, since no one should have to pay to learn. Runway is a project we’re extremely passionate about and we want you to focus on building a habit of learning instead of worrying about any subscription services or even any fees.

I’ve also made the app open source.

We would also love all feedback, so feel free to share appreciation or criticism! We want to make the app the best it can be.

Hispanic importance in surveys

This might be a weird question but I can't think of a better place to ask so I'm going to explain here

Quick context: I worked at a place in which we do phone surveys, often there are about school bonds, without fail, the last two questions are

Do you come from a Hispanic background 1. Yes 2. No 3. DK/NA

[If 2 or 3, ask] Then what is your ethnicity? Then the list would be here.

I always noticed this but never questioned it, I assumed it was a funky thing, but I had to sign up for a college management website for an AP class and it had a mini survey and the last question what the same

If anyone could explain why Hispanic is getting singled out and never any other ethnicity, i would greatly appreciate it, or a resource that helps where I could get more information, thanks!

Anyone else frustrated with the fact that you could easily grow in a career but you can't get the job because for the job description you need certain skills even though you could develop them easily?(not talking about very technical professions, but mid-skill positions)

I find this frustrating because at my first job I implemented a CRM with no previous experience of software within the first few months of me being there. I didn't have these skills to start with but could easily develop them...

Rampage: Private or public

Hi, I am f14 from a low income home with hispanic immigrant parents and just started freshmen year in high school and I'm completely lost right now. I went to public school for the whole time in elementary, but when I entered middle school, my parents, my mother in general decided to enroll me in this said private school, since my bigger sister (two years older than me) was already attending the school. It seemed a logic thing to do for me. Though it might not be a very huge deal, it was for my mom because since elementary my sister has excelled in class and actually the reason we ever got to the point of my sister attending this private school was because of her fourth and fifth grade teacher who saw much potential In her that she suggested and helped my mom with the whole process for applying to that school. My mom really really wanted my sister to go there for her future and good of her. She wants that for all six of her kids. My mom is originally from Guatemala and came here to the United States more than 10 years ago where she has tried make a life here, she comes from a very impoverished home and has many traumatic and unfair stories of her life. So I know how much she wants us, to achieve in our life. Continuing on with the process of applying, I remember it was a long process that took weeks and help of many people, specifically this girl in university at the time, who did almost everything for my mom because my mom doesn't really know English and was very lost on the process. she couldn't have done anything on her own. which I don't blame her. The lady helped my mom get financial support from the school where she paid less tuition than others ennrolled there. the average tuition a year, is 10 thousand a year but my sister's got reduced to only 1,500 a year and the extra cost of food and supplies(also had to pay that) Still a lot but not as much. Anyways, my sister got accepted and started middle school in that school. As for me, I was still in elementary at the time and continued my last years there until I completed fifth grade. I would not say I was a prodigy as a child but I will say that as my sister, I did good in school at that time and was considered smart. I honestly didn't feel very smart but I did well. I was supposed to go to this public school near but my mom heard numerous things about it that made her not want me to go. That summer after fifth grade my mom wanted me to go to the same school as my sister which also relied on much help and was also a long process. The same people helped us. I honestly don't remember how I felt but honestly I remember being curious about this school since I've seen it when my mom went to pick my sister up. I remember being intrigued by it. The process was the same as my sister's I'd say. When it was confirmed I was going my mom had to buy me many supplies and uniforms. I remember going to this thing where they show you around the school and tell you about the school more. that day was not a school day but a welcome day I could say. I remember thinking about the amount of white people there was. Not trying to be racist in any way. But it was a huge culture shock if I could say so, and just a shock in general. I felt out of place. Many of the people of that school have gone there since elementary and already knew each other. I also remember thinking how rich they were. I wouldn't say everyone is stacked up loaded with cash but I'd say many people there come from high-income homes. But to me back then it was as if the were on another planet as me. I wouldn't say people there are spoiled but they have their privileges and kind of ignorance of them. I remember the day of waiting outside in line for a shaved ice cone and eating it while everyone was getting along. Two kids came up to me and said hello and were the first ones to talk to me. A girl and a boy, The girl was very nice she seemed so lovely and she was. The boy was a bit shy but was also nice to me. They introduced themselves. And kind adopted me into their friend group. The first day I was so confused and kind of looking forward to a lot. It was a very pleasant school it seemed. The teachers were lovely and everything. But there was something I couldn't figure out. It felt fake every interaction. I don't know, even if they were welcoming it seemed off. I felt out of touch with everyone there. There was a lot. One shock I had was the way the students were smart. They were all the same level in understanding and doing well. In all my classes. In my old school I was considered smart with probably three other kids but it was as if someone grabbed the smart student from each class and put them all together. Sixth grade was okay. I struggled to keep up and do well in classes but I managed. Something that I think had an impact on my experience was my anxiety and introvertness. I barely talked in sixth grade and had trouble making friends. Some other things I noticed throughout middle school was the curiosity of people, I would constantly get asked where I was from and what language I spoke. I'd get ask by teachers and students. Id get ask what I was. "are you asian?""are you Mexican". Wasn't a huge deal and I didn't get offended but getting asked a lot was embarrassing to me at the time. I was socially awkward. And embarrassed of myself. I was embarrassed of my last name, my family, my household, I was embarrassed of how my mom couldn't speak English, I was embarrassed to go to events or go to someone else's house. I would try to hide that. I thought, what would they think of me? That soon turned into rage in 8th grade where I wasn't very focus on what others thought of me but instead they shouldn't think about me in that way. But I was still me and had a hard time. Hardest part was 7th grade. I feel like I've gotten off track so I'll try to get to the point. In 8th grade was the year I told my mom about how I hated being in that school. she wanted me to stay but I kept crying and begging for me to switch schools. I wanted to leave before 9th grade started. She didn't like it but she applied me to this public charter school where the rest of my siblings go. That summer I was thinking that I was going to that school and that I was done with the other school. It was taking too long to be accepted to that school that my mom applied for. So she told me to get ready to go to the same school. I was in denial and it was until last minute that I realized she was right. I cried and sobbed all night thinking about having to go to school the same morning. when it was morning I tried my best to reason with my mom to let me wait until I get accepted to the other school. I wasn't successful and went to school. My eyes were puffy and I was tired because I was only able to sleep 2 hours. Highschool there seemed alright but thinking of having to go there everyday didn't suit me. My mom tried and contacted the other school to see where in the admission process I was. They said I was very close but not yet. My Mom really really wanted me to stay. I feel like she feels that if I go to that school I have a better future. I don't even know anymore, since I barely do anything in that school. Unlike many who is in touch with the community and extracurriculars there, I don't do or participate in anything. This week I enter the public charter school and see a difference, it is more packed with students, the teachers care less and don't engage much with the lessons, the classes are more work than lessons, and other stuff. I honestly don't know anymore. My mom says there is still time to change schools but I feel like they are both the same. I think that they both have their pros and cons. But are the same level of hating towards them. I feel like the schools aren't even the problem but me. Also I feel pressured to achieve greatness and excel and already know what to do in life. I know I want to go to college, but I don't know anything else, I don't know what to focus on, I don't know what I should prep for, I don't know how anythings works, I see and read about how many young people go to great colleges and ivy leagues and have many accomplishments, while I can't even find a place to focus and do my work that is due in like 3 hours. I want to get good grades all highschool and not be in any trouble. How am I supposed to achieve that if I can't even sit down, and do my actual work, and be able to understand what im doing. I feel like I just started but already feel so drained and want this all to stop. Also my mom and I went to meet up with the director of the private school. He offered me to go this semester and if I don't like I can leave. that was last week. this week im attending the other school but I feel like I don't want to be in any of them. I feel like im just existing at this moment and lost my purpose. And now im in between if I go to the private school to public school cause im enrolled in both of them but if I switch to the private school back im behind like the public school academically, and I didn't even read the summer books I were supposed to read because I thought I wouldn't need to read them. If I change it has to be this week and I'll have to catch up and I don't know. I also feel like Ive been a headache to my mom and that her work would have been for nothing. also im not sure myself of what I want. Also my sister is always judging me trying to make me feel worse. I also got to consider my moms personal problems because right now w have a lot of situations and hardships mentally and physically. My mom is trying to gain full custody of us because my step dad has been horrible to my mother and has abused her in so many ways throughout the years. So currently we are in shared custody, weeks for mom, weekends for step dad. Since my mom has us most of the time, my step dad is supposed to help her with the costs of food, gas, essential needs. But he really doesn't help. Also, prior to the separation, my mom didn't work and just stayed at home with us and raised us, cooked, cleaned, and more. So when my step dad left he left her without anything. My mom was smart enough to save some money. She has been working now for us. She works cleaning. Also something that doesn't help is that my step dad has hired and done many things to make her life even harder. He has hired people to follow her, has hired people to hack her phone, he even recently payed to have her investigated. I don't know much of how it works but I know it was yesterday she had to go with her lawyer to whatever he payed for. I don't know how it went but considering she hasn't said anything, I'd say not very well. My step dad is just not a good person. I don't even know what I was going with this now I just know That my mom has worked very hard and she's the reason why we aren't starving. I feel like she's losing hope and I am very worried for her but it seems like I just disturb her. I just don't know how to help her. I want her to be happy. I want to get her out of her problems but I don't know how. I don't know what this post even is about anymore. I just don't know what im doing in life, and im tired.

Taking notes, paper or digitally?

School year starts in a week for me, and I'm not sure about taking notes. I study by myself, from home, and I read around 4-5 topics from one subject daily, sometimes more. That would mean taking notes from every single chapter. Last year I was doing it the same way, and I gave up a few days later, because I was doing them on paper, and it'd take me like 4 hours of just making notes look "aesthetically" (it didn't.) or at least to make them look readable + hand pain. I'm aware that taking notes on paper is definitely more effective, but I'm not sure. Is taking notes on a laptop going to be less painful, but also I'd remember less? (And if it's on a laptop, what apps would you recommend?)

Student Behavior Trackers

Hey are there any behavior trackers out there besides ClassDojo that you can get as an individual teacher?

I have teacher aide pro, which has the seating charts function that dojo doesn't have, but I was just trying to see if there was anything else out there better than a paper tracker or an excel spreadsheet.

Seems like TeacherKit is dead. ClassCharts is schoolwide only. Anyone have anything I don't know about?

Thinking about going back to school for a degree in Education. I have a couple of questions.

I got my BA in Liberal Arts about five years ago and fell into a job teaching in high school in Japan. I really enjoy it. I've been thinking of going back to school and have a couple of questions:

  1. Can I continue on from my BA in Liberal Arts to a Masters in Education, or do I need to start over with the BA?

  2. Can anyone recommend any books to prepare for a degree in Education? Any authors or frameworks I should pay attention to from the outset?

Thanks,

I built this to reduce stress of online teaching

I’ve been building this tool(our website) to help educators stay off-cam during online teachings, and I’m curious if this could be really useful for teachers. It lets you use a realistic clone so you can focus on teaching or interacting with students without worrying about being on camera. Plus, it ensures you always look your best without the stress of getting camera-ready.

Do you think this could help teachers feel more comfortable and focused during classes? I’d love your feedback!

Stuck between nursing and primary teaching

I need some advice. I’m 19 and I graduated school last year. This year will be my second gap year because I’m travelling with my boyfriend but I still haven’t decided between nursing and teaching in college. Teaching has my heart but the pay for teachers where I live is not great at all and my boyfriend isn’t guaranteed to go to college and get a degree and all i can think about is the housing crisis and how expensive everything is. I’m kinda scared. Also I would have to take a back door route into teaching because I didn’t graduate with the right qualifications so it would take me 6 years, whereas nursing would only take me 4 years to graduate.

Nursing is better pay but I’m a really sensitive person and don’t know if I could deal with the mental side of it, but I love biology and health + helping people which would probably help me get over the cons. I’ve wanted to be a teacher my whole life, but nursing is better pay and would take less time to graduate in. On top of that I am terrible at making big decisions because I’m scared of the feeling of regret. Please give me advice!!!!

Is it just me or does school just teach kids to be quiet?

Some of the most important skills in life are social skills, yet school does not teach this. In fact, school teaches the opposite. In my experience, education is essentially introvert molding. There is nothing teachers hate more than seeing students socialize. Quiet students are praised as "good kids." Some of the greatest memories are through relationships and social situations, yet school prohibits these from happening.

Anyone else feel the same? Has school ever been an appropriate place to make friends?

Would a temporary mandatory boarding school system in some areas fix the problems?

There are some school districts and areas in cities where attendance is extremely low and like half the students are chronically absent. Then the grades are also really low.

would a temporary boarding school system lets say 20 years or so change the culture on education in that area.

i think you should be able to opt out your kid, but I imagine many for one reason or another will not.

this is a hypothetical going nuclear option to fix a deep rooted problem.

'GCSE results matter and it’s unrealistic to tell kids otherwise'

Hello, I am Anushka and I work for Metro as an Audience Editor. As part of our GCSE results day content, we have a piece by Nadeine Asbali, a British Muslim writer and secondary school teacher living in east London who discusses the importance of good grades in today's world.

Although she agrees that life does not come to a halt with low grades, she says that by telling students that results don't matter, we could be selling an unfairly idealistic view of the world outside of school to kids who are going to be in for a rude awakening when they enter it.

'Whether it’s Jeremy Clarkson’s now (in)famous smug annual post reminding everyone he got a C and 2 Us in his A-levels or a tweet from the Chase’s Shaun Wallace revealing he failed his own exams many years ago, it is important for young people and their families to see examples that success isn’t always linear and doesn’t have to mean acing your exams on the first go,' she says.

She argues that this is because 'Britain a few decades ago was a very different place to today'.

'In an increasingly competitive job market, employers look for academic success because it’s considered the more reliable litmus test. Places at better-rated colleges, sixth forms and universities rely on exam results. The best-paid grad schemes take the highest achieving graduates. '

Instead, she says we need to turn our attention towards how we can ensure young people today, whose academic journey may be curtailed by exam results, are still able to experience success – whether that's via apprenticeships that could be working to ensure that grade requirements better acknowledge the impacts of poverty; or it might be funnelling funding into schools to ensure that every single child – not just the academically elite – has access to the best quality education.

'Whatever the answer is, we need to focus on the future, not nostalgia for the past. No matter how tempting it is to brag about overcoming bad results. '

What do you think? Are we selling students a rose-tinted version of the outside world when we tell them that results don't matter?

Denver East HS has gone downhill

Anyone know what’s going on with this school? I’ve had three kids attend over the past 10 years (my youngest is in 10th grade). The school environment has changed tremendously since my oldest began in 2015. I am so unimpressed with the lack of leadership, the number of staff that were cut last school year, and the overall negative vibe that the school currently posses. Trying to get in touch with the Principal is virtually impossible, as she’s never present. Even my daughter can’t ever find her during the day. Some staff appear to just be there for a paycheck and have no desire to actually help kids. I used to walk into the counseling office to chat with my kid’s counselor, as we had nearly ten years of a relationship with one another, and now when I walk in no one even acknowledges me. I’m an East alum and it pains me to see how this school is no longer the pillar of the community that it once was. What can we do to make it better??

Cheated on a test, should I own up before I get busted?

Currently in culinary school and had a short PC quiz a few days ago. In a moment of stupidity, I googled one of the questions. I'm seriously regretting it and am considering owning up before I'm caught. I'm pretty sure it will be easy for me to get caught, as I was logged in to a network pc, with my student ID and googled from there. I don't know if the school checks internet usage during tests etc. but if caught, I'm pretty sure I will have to re-enrol in the unit and pay out of pocket. I'm already struggling financially and feel pretty guilty about this stupid mistake.

Meaning and purposes of Education segmentation

Hello, I need your light regarding a question, please. Why do we say primary, secondary and tertiary education? For example, in what way taught topics in university has to do with "tertiary" concept?

I know this might be hard to answer as education content depends on country, but I think for such question it's not a bad idea to hear from multiple point of view and experience.

Thank you. I hope my English was good enough to express my concern.

Need help understanding school's disciplinary rule - Advice on presenting alternative ideas?

I want to get perspectives here because it's been a while since I was in a classroom.

This school apparently has a blanket rule in all math classes about dropping calculators. Yes, the calculators are school property. Parents aren't given the option of buying kids their own. Kids are assigned them and take them home. No, this isn't a judgement call. Anyone who drops a calculator, no matter how or why, gets sentences for the first offense, lunch detention for the second offense, and then sent to the principal for the third offense and so on. These are 7th graders using TI-36x Pro calculators.

I found this ridiculous. I opted to ask the principal to get more information or to understand this rule better. We talked for a while about the reasons it's in place and I explained why I found it unreasonable and not conducive to a good learning environment. If a child is walking on eggshells in a class, they're not going to be focused on learning. The principal did state that it's to keep teachers focused on teaching and fair so they're not left to distinguish if a student did it on purpose or not, which I do understand.

Bottom line: Is this a normal rule for a school now? I understand there are kids who will do stuff on purpose or for attention, but there are just as many kids who don't and it's an honest accident. I also don't agree with writing as a punishment, detention for something like dropping a calculator, or using the same punishment for an accident as you would something like class disruption. Are there other disciplinary options or ideas that I can give the principal when he gets back to me to maybe move towards finding a solution or updating this (presumably) outdated rule?

I have asked about a child providing their own calculator, but I don't expect the rule to change as the teacher would then have to remember who has their own calculator and who has a school's calculator. Plus, that leaves out kids who's parents can't afford to buy them one or won't.

Also, this is a very small school in the US (40-60 students per grade) if that matters.

Of Course Schools Are Day Care

“You’re not really supposed to say this, but school isn’t just about educating kids; it’s about watching them,” Jerusalem Demsas writes. ~https://theatln.tc/wqz9XfZ2~

“Working parents know the dread of scrambling for sitters or rearranging their own schedule when school is unexpectedly out of session,” Demsas continues. Paying out-of-pocket for child care can be tremendously expensive, while the added burden of watching kids during school closures may even lead parents to drink; one paper found that alcohol purchases increased in counties with longer-than-average school closures during the pandemic, a finding consistent with other research into the knock-on effects of school closures.

This research also showed that “women with elementary-age children suffered the most, consistent with expectations that young children require the most time and attention,” Demsas writes. “Further, the researchers found no effect for fathers, which is consistent with research about who was likely to be most burdened with child care.”

“One clear upshot of the new research is that extending school would be helpful to mothers and to the broader community. Fortunately, year-round school is also good for kids,” Demsas continues. “I am very sympathetic to the argument that we expect too much from schools and teachers without providing them adequate support. But the problem isn’t viewing schools as also serving these broader functions; the problem is not equipping them with the resources to adequately do so.”

Question about poor academic advisement affecting graduation

I’m looking to get some guidance on this situation, and I hope this is the right sub for it.  My son has been in community college for 5 years to get a STEM Associates (AS) degree in computers. He is high functioning autistic and has epilepsy, so it’s taken him some time to finish up the program due to his mental health problems. He finished up the last class in June and was at 100% for course fulfillment and applied to graduate.  Last week them came to him and said he’s still got 2 classes to finish. Turns out the previous head of the department (and advisor) suggested he take class XX for class X and YY for class Y and signed off on it. Now they’re telling him that should not have happened, and he’s not met the requirements. The previous Advisor has since retired in June.  I’m furious because I’ve seen this kid struggle and overcome so much to finish this up only for them to say he’s done and now oh wait…you’re not done.  Mind you one cannot register for any classes without advisement and all these classes had to be signed off by the Department and Advisor so apparently it was Ok when he took them. I think it’s unfair for them to essentially punish him for not having the course work done when an advisor, a representative of the school, signed off that he was “good to go” for the classes only to come back to him when he applied for graduation and tell him otherwise. In the past they’d override and grant the replacement courses sufficient but they no longer do that.  Furthermore, one of the classes isn’t even offered until the Spring 2025 semester!  I’m going to talk to the Dean of the department first and I’ll file a grievance if necessary but how else do I approach this?

I need advice 😫

Hello, I'm 25F, and right now, I'm in school at west-mec studying IT security in Arizona. I will be graduating 🎓 🤗 this coming December 12,2024

After graduation, I will go straight to community college. But, I don't know what to study. A lot of my family members are telling me not to study IT security because AI is taking over, etc.

I want to join the Coast Guard, but I have ADHD so I think 🤔 that's not a possibility 🤔 😕 😅

I do want to make a good salary, tho.

What should I study to get an associate degree that pays well?

After my 2 years, I want to move out of AZ. I used to live in Queens, NY (I have family there) . I used live to in California.

I know I need to save money 💰 to move out of state.

School options for Stubborn Brother

My brother has had failing grades in middle school, he doesn’t enjoy reading and was involved in a lot of troubled activities. He is very intelligent and has a passion for science but doesn’t have the grades to show for it. My parents are not uneducated enough to help him and now I’m off to college and I cannot be there to hold him accountable anymore. I was thinking of putting him into boarding school, but Im unsure of what school to send him to because his grades are not well. I don’t want to put him in a place that he will worsen though, a lot of boarding schools are abusive. What private schools/boarding schools are good in the states that don’t require good grades for admission??? For those of you concerned about my authority in this situation, my parents told me to make the decision (they are immigrants without any knowledge on academics and school systems, and are absent parents, I refuse to give up on him, its not his fault his parents are not attentive).

Online school while moving to a new state?

Hi! I want to move across the country to Pennsylvania in March of next year... but I'm about to start an associate's program at my local community college.

Are there any online schools that have the same (relatively affordable) tuition regardless of what state you're in?

I'm relying on Fafsa to help me pay for it, and I need in-state tuiton to be able to afford it. I'm already 24 years old so I can't afford to wait 2 years to gain in-state tuiton.

My local community college where I am now does have an online program, but I don't think I'd be allowed to take their classes as an in-state student if I move away

Thank you so much in advance I truly appreciate any advice!!!

Programs for small group reading?

I just started at a new school that is very heavy in English Language Learners. I’m going to be teaching third grade and will be starting with letter sounds with a lot of them. Does anyone have suggestions for good programs to follow for small group lessons? I am feeling like a fish out of water. My last school got rid of small group entirely and wouldn’t let us do it. I am overwhelmed with how much reeducation I need after that experience. I feel like this is going to make me sound a little lazy, but I’m trying to find a program that comes with a scope and sequence that I can easily use in small groups. I have 80 students. So something where I can get my data on where the students are and then pull them based on what phonics skills they are missing/already know. Scope and sequence of skills I can easily jump in at any point, scripted lessons would be a major plus. I’m trying to find something that does most of the planning for me so I can keep up with all of my kids. Any suggestions would be super appreciated

PBL Private School

  • Rant-ish post *

For context: my nephew’s parents are a doctor and nurse, coming from a long line of doctors/“professionals”, and he’s their first child. They read to him at night, but don’t teach him anything else.

My nephew is starting kindergarten this year & his parents decided to put him in a private project-based learning school. He has no preschool or daycare experience & before this he went to “forest school” which was a half-day program where the kids walked through the woods & learned about nature.

I’m worried about his education & growth and wanting to know the benefits of this private school. It just opened in 2021 & has 12 students per class. As far as I know, they don’t have a gym class (just a playground), no music class and no library. Pickup/drop off time is whenever you want. Unsure how they’re teaching curriculum and basic standards through only projects for 5 year olds. I asked a first grader how she liked the school & she said she “just wants to learn, someone please teach me math”. So it sounds like they’re not doing the typical kindergarten aspects: counting, recognizing letters/numbers, shapes, etc. PBL sounds like it would be helpful to some students but mainly at the higher education level, not necessarily k-5.

I’m wondering how this will help/hurt him in the long run if he won’t know how to spell his name but at least he’ll know how to build a birdhouse.

Also, they’re now asking parents to come in on the weekends and clean since they’re not hiring a cleaning staff this year.

Former homeschool mom…

My daughter just started her very first year of school this year and she is in the 5th grade. Prior to that I homeschooled her.

I never intended to be a homeschool parent, but when it was time to place my daughter in kindergarten, the home that I could afford was zoned to a school that was underperforming academically and the students had serious behavior issues (it was definitely one of those “pipeline to prison” environments), and I could not afford private school. I did not want to place my little girl in that type of environment, so I decided to homeschool her, and we stuck with it.

Over the summer, I found a really nice charter school, and my only regret is not finding it sooner (but you don’t know what you don’t know. The school was actually founded the year she would have been in second grade, so it wasn’t available during the time she would have been k through 1st grade).

It has only been one week in school so far, and it has done wonders for her confidence and self esteem. I can tell already that she will thrive in this environment. She told me that she loves “turn and talk time”, which is a time following when the teacher presents and idea and poses a question, the students are able to speak with each other to share ideas on the topic. My daughter is so pleased with so many aspects of the school and the classroom, it would take me a long time to detail them all. She is learning so much, and I can see that her mind is being stimulated and she is so engaged and enthusiastic about academic learning, which is something that I was not able to inspire, no matter what I tried.

She told me that its much better than me being her teacher. And she is so right. It makes me feel really guilty for ever homeschooling her in the first place. I do not regret keeping her out of the public school system though. She went to day camp this summer and the public school kids were BRUTAL. So much negativity and deviance and degeneracy. I would have felt like a failure if my child behaved and spoke the way those children behave and speak; I simply did not want her in that type of environment, and I stand by that.

I did the very best that I could with the resources that I had. It’s not so much that I regret homeschooling, I just hate that the schools available to people at my socioeconomic level are environments that have very dismal outcomes. I am so proud of the child that my daughter is; I have done an excellent job with her so far, and it is reflected in the beautiful energy that she has. I am very happy that she is now in school being educated by professionals and in an environment each day with her peers, whose parents have done an equally excellent job in cultivating and maintaining the beautiful energy in their children.

Appropriate boundaries with principal

I am asking this as a parent to one child who is in kindergarten and another child who was formally a student at the same school with the same principal.

The principal and I have become closer than most parents due to having both kids in sped and a lot of behavioral problems from them both. We have texted and called a lot over the years, mostly having to do with the kids. I have cried in front of him, shared personal things and we’ve become pretty friendly. He even swore in front of me and I was totally cool with it. He’s hugged me before (he asked first) and often puts his hand on my shoulder.

If I’m being honest I have thought about him romantically but I’m not thinking I want to peruse that. I’m more thinking about adding him on Facebook or Snapchat. He keeps coming up in my suggested friends so that’s what gets me thinking about it. I’m already friends with two female teachers at the school that I only know through the school, and that isn’t weird.

I just don’t want to do anything inappropriate and I have issues with easily feeling rejected so it would suck if he didn’t approve my friend request. I don’t always know if something is appropriate or a good idea to do or not.

Thoughts?

In an interview with Elon Musk, Trump said one of his first plans is to shut down the department of education

I'm just curious how educators think this plan to dismantle the DoEd and give all rights and responsibilities to the states would look like in their neck if the woods? In his interview he states that he believes at least 15 states would really struggle. How far behind would your students be if suddenly the state took over funding and curriculum? What would this look like in rural areas? Are there enough charter schools for all our students, should the plan to offer vouchers for charter schools take effect? (adapted from u/InyerPockette )

Recommendations sought for education in Kerala

I recently visited a low income to no income family I know in Kerala with slightly difficult circumstances. Their 16 year old is a smart, bright young man who has done very well in the school he was at, passing grade 10 with distinction. He has taken up the Accountancy stream in grade 11 but when I saw his books I noticed that they were last updated around 30 years ago! (His school follows State curriculum, which he goes to due to cost and accessibility factors). The other day he told me that he was bored with what he was learning and he realized that it had no value for the current day, which is absolutely right.

We live in a world where you don’t have to memorize information by rote, and the objective is to develop personality, communication skills, life skills in general only to mention a few.

I would like to explore ideas for him to help him evolve and open up opportunities that can pave the way to bettering his whole family’s life.

I was thinking of getting the child a laptop and a good wifi connection. What do you think about suggesting for him? ⁃ homeschooling options? Do they exist in Kerala? The idea is to get him through the current stage (11/12 grade) with an updated and more meaningful curriculum so that he doesn’t have to waste his youth having to study clearly outdated information. ⁃ Udemy/ coursera suggestions? Free but good courses to help upgrade his knowledge ⁃ Ideas to explore for himself in digital media/ others? I’m throwing this out there hoping we can help this child out and not let him get stuck in a situation where he does not learn anything meaningful in school and ends up frustrated/ bored.

Hope someone can pls help me with this question, I'm currently in the process of getting an architecture degree, but as of late I've been thinking about studying some other careers as complementary studies that align with my other interests. Right now I've been considering studying mechanics/robotics and something related to medicine (more specifically nurse assistant and first aid practices), but I'm also interested in accounting and programming (though I have more interest in the later than the former).

So my main concerns are in how I could study these and how to do it while I focus in architecture, and how out of profile it would look like that an architecture student has also studies on topics that are kind off or completely out of context with architecture? Should I study these all at the same time or maybe after I get my degree? Or maybe not study any of them at all?

Missing one Praxis test report, should I be worried?

So on Tuesday, I took the 5752 Praxis core combined tests which included reading, math, and writing. Within three days I got my official scores back but only for reading & math while my scores for the writing subtest are missing. Should I go ahead and contact customer support about this or is this normal and just wait a few more days? Fyi I took the test at home in case that matters.

Learning doesn’t have to suck - What if you had your own perfect teacher?

Hey! What if you could learn anything 10x faster, without the frustration and demotivation that often comes with traditional education? I'm exploring an idea for a revolutionary learning platform and I'd love to get your thoughts and feedback. Here's the concept:

An AI-powered learning platform that analyzes your unique learning style and becomes your perfect teacher, generating personalized courses on any topic and adapting in real-time to optimize your learning experience.

Here's how it would work:

  1. When you sign up, the AI analyzes your learning style across multiple dimensions:
    • Learning speed
    • Preferred media type (text, images, audio, video)
    • Learning format (solo vs. in a group, peers vs. teachers)
    • Level of guidance needed (very close guidance vs. independent)
    • Temporal (optimal session duration & interval)
    • Feedback and reward (immediate vs. delayed, strict vs. flexible)
    • Learning strategies (reflective vs. active, deep vs. surface learning)
    • Motivational and emotional (intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation)
    • Cognitive (analytical vs. holistic, sequential vs. random)
  2. Based on this comprehensive analysis, the AI creates a personalized learning plan for any topic you want to study. This isn't just limited to academic subjects - you could learn anything from quantum physics to first grade level math, from coding to learning Japanese. The platform adapts its teaching style to match your individual needs, ensuring that you're always engaged and motivated.
  3. As you progress, the AI continuously adapts the content, teaching style, and learning environment to optimize your learning experience. It adjusts in real-time based on your performance, engagement, and feedback, ensuring that you're always learning at your optimal pace and in your preferred style.

Key features:

  • Adapts to all ages and levels: From children to adults, beginners to experts
  • High-quality, curated content that's continuously updated
  • Personalized learning pathways that evolve with you
  • Interactive elements to keep you engaged and motivated
  • Real-time feedback and progress tracking

With this platform, you should be able to learn over 10x faster without the common issues of boredom, frustration, or demotivation that students often face in traditional educational settings. It's designed to be everyone's "perfect" teacher, fitting your desired style perfectly and adapting as your needs change. It could be in the form of an app or a web-platform, like you know it from other applications.

I'd really appreciate your input on a few questions:

  1. Does something like this already exist? If so, what has been your experience with it?
  2. What additional features would you want in a platform like this?
  3. What potential problems or challenges do you see with this idea?
  4. Would you be interested in using a platform like this? Why or why not?
  5. If you were interested, how much would you be willing to pay for this service?
  6. Would you prefer this over traditional education or other learning platforms like Duolingo? Why or why not?
  7. Any other feedback or thoughts on this concept?

Thanks in advance for your insights! Your feedback will be incredibly helpful in shaping this idea.

California CTE question

Anyone have experience with a career technical education teaching credential? I'm going back to college but would like to teach or work in education in some capacity while I go back to school. My background is in Theater, I've written for TV in small increments, and I have worked for A LONG TIME in hospitality. I currently work for an after school program. It's great, but I'm broke. I am curious about getting my CTE and teaching either media arts or hospitality but I can't find any salary ranges anywhere. I'm hoping to become a teacher or get my masters and become a pediatric therapist but that's a long road and I'm hoping for a steady job in the meanwhile. Would a CTE lead to that meanwhile job? No? Any info or advice would be appreciated.

ESL situation in Kindergarten

This question is about kindergarten education in USA. So, we are bilingual, and mainly speak another language at home. When I was filling out my son's kindergarten application, there was a question that asked "if we speak another language at home". I thought it was just a general question with no implication, so I put yes.

Now long story short, he was given WIDA test for fluency in English, and he got 3 out of 5 in assement (5 is a passing score). So, they have now enrolled him into ESL (Englsih as a Secondary Language) class. Now, we have the ability to waive this class; however, he will have to keep taking the ACCESS test each year until he passes it. It wouldn't be an issue, except this test is very specific about pronouns and even someone who doesn't speak another language would have trouble passing it from what I have read online.

He was born and raised here. He went to Pre-K and interacted with students and teachers just fine and also learned English from watching cartoons. We mainly speak other language at home, but he also converses with us in englsih as well. He is learning two languages at the same time, so sometimes he mixes up words and sentences, but he doesn't have any particular issue with language learnjng. I spoke to the teacher who took his assessment, and even she mentioned that kids of this age sometimes aren't motivated during these tests/ assessment and that could be why he didn't get 5.

From what I have read, people who take ESL classes have easier time passing Access test because they are taught specific material for the exam. So, I am in a dilemma whether to enroll him or not. If we choose to enroll him, they will pull him from his regular class room for 45 minutes each day to tech him ESL material.

I am thinking about enrolling him just so that he can pass the ACCESS test next year and get it out of the way. So, if we do enroll him, can he fall behind in the regular class in terms of reading/ writing because he is only taught beginner level material in ESL? How is ESL material different from regular class? The ESL teacher I spoke to, mentioned that ESL class is specifically for people are learning two languages and they would teach English in more depth compared to the regular class.

So, should I give it a go, or am I doing him a disservice by enrolling him into this class? Would he be treated differently in his regular class for being ESL? Can someone please shed more light on their experience with ESL? I would love to get input from teachers as well. Thanks!

help with my future

I am in year 9. I am basically a hopeless student. This year half yearly report card I got 3 c’s 1a and 3b’s. And yet I am really really passionate about pursuing law in my higher studies in yr 11 and 12, but I’m not sure if I should or if I can. See, I live in Australia and I chose my year 9 electives as engineering, IT, and music. It is now that my friends are telling me that if I want to pursue legal studies in year 11 I needed to choose commerce as an elective, so any clarity on that is appreciated. now comes the part if I SHOULD do legal studies. As I mentioned before I got my half yearly report card and it was terrible. Would I be fit to be a law student in year 11? How can I improve myself? any advice on what hsc subjects I should choose to pursue law is also appreciated(as a backup aeronautical engineering is my second choice after law) Any advice is much appreciated thank you soo much Have a great day :)

I want to study in Russia

Hello everyone, hope you’re having an amazing day.

I was wondering if you could help me with a question related to russia’s school system, as I want to apply for a school and go study there, but am struggling with this question. I’ll ask my question, just incase

I’m from the UK. 18. I dropped out of school after finishing secondary education/secodnary school at age 17, and now at age 18 want to go study in russia.

I’am unsure of where I could study though. I’ve tried hard to find this out. Whta i mean is that I’am struggling to find out how, or if, i can even come to russia and study, despite the fact that I left school after finishing my secondary school in the UK.

I’m really not sure, despite having learned about the education system, and how it differes to the UK. I guess that I’am getting confused a little

Part of my confusion is probably because I also have another question, which is about “where i can study and apply?” Is it just at a university that i would need to apply and go to, or would i need to complete the russian version of “secondary education” (it is apparently called that), which lasts 2-3 years, first (which is done before students pass the EGE examination and go to university.

I hope that i made myself clear. I really do want to study, but am just confused is all. Thank you :)

Following up on an interview advice.

I am a first year elementary teacher and have applied and interviewed with several schools. The one school that I prefer over the others interviewed with me on Friday. I felt it went well. They assured me they would let me know by the following Wednesday. It Is now Friday morning and I still haven’t heard anything. I am thinking of waiting until about 4 pm before potentially emailing them.

What would be a good way to phrase my inquiry? Or should I not even bother? Any advice helps. Thanks.

EU history teachers- how difficult would you believe changing the country of focus every 4 years (maintaining for the same class) would be?

Hungarian here.

I feel a not in-significant portion of my country's problems come from how our history is taught and the subsequent irredentist zeal many of our citizens show. It's not uncommon for someone to support Putin in this country in hopes that when he captures Ukraine, he will return regions that Hungary lost during Trianon.

Our history education puts a lot of emphasis on the "injustice of trianon"

One idle muse of a solution I've had was to have history curriculum written by history teachers of another EU country, rotating, so as to minimize both nationalistic and historical rivalry induced biases, while still teaching the country's own history.

Another idle muse I've had was to rotate what country's history within the EU the high school children are taught every 4 years, but student years that already started studying X country will maintain that country as their focus.

I imagine one way it could be done is through digital education through English, which too might help suppress irredentist/nationalistic zeal since the ability to speak English, gained through studying history in English from a foreigner, would liberate the student from only having access to local media and open them to global opinions and views.

Having Hungarian kids study history from romanian/croatian/serb/ukrainian/czech/polish perspective may improve the country's empathy, and steel them against beliefs that violence against our neighbours is justified by historic "injustices."

Post was born of heinous stuff I overheareard during my morning commute.

I've barely slept 5 hours so grammar might be a bit incoherent.

What, for an individual, is the purpose and objective of education?

I've been thinking about my children's education. I think this is a more straightforward a question on a societal level, but on an individual level I have no idea. Any intuitive answer I can come up with is either too broad to be useful (e.g. prepare someone to succeed in the world... ok, how do we do that?) or too narrow to be useful (e.g meet these 500 learning objectives by age X, all of which seem arbitrary).

I'm really just trying to have a conceptual framework to think about what is and is not useful to my children as they grow.

Our Education System Is Failing Our Kids

Hi guys,

I’ve been thinking a lot about our education system, and it’s honestly depressing. We’re supposed to be preparing kids for the future, but it feels like we’re just pushing them through a broken system. Overcrowded classrooms, underpaid teachers, outdated curriculums – it’s a mess. How are we supposed to expect kids to succeed when we’re not giving them the tools they need?

Squirrel Accountant

The idea of allowing students to design their own independent degrees works in theory, but it fails in practice because it allows everyone to design their own degree. This should be a privilege reserved for those who truly qualify for it—those who have graduated with the highest GPAs or have shown exceptional talent and genius in their field.

For instance, if you earned a cooking scholarship because you created a groundbreaking dessert, or if you received an engineering scholarship for winning a prestigious science prize, you should be allowed to design your own degree. This opportunity should be given to students who have demonstrated excellence, not just to anyone who decides the modern or standard curriculum isn't for them.

The modern curriculum has its merits. It provides the foundational skills necessary for various careers, whether it's in engineering, accounting, or other fields. If someone designs their own accounting degree without the essential base, who would hire them? Would their skills be relevant or productive in the real world? However, if someone has discovered a creative and legal loophole in tax law they’ve shown genius and should be allowed to design their own degree.

Not everyone is a genius, and this system should recognize and accommodate that

My memory is so bad i dont know if there is a point trying higher edu

Being burntout destroyed my memory unfortunately. Unless it is something I truly find fascinating, it just won't stick. I can re-read something and 1 page later I have no idea what I read.

I can think and reason really well about basically anything. But just memorization, especially in large quantities is just pointless for me.

It makes you realize how important memory is for education. Anyone got tips? Healthcare does not give a shit.

Would students be more interested in learning if they had to develop a video game using what they learned, regardless of the subject (e.g., a historical video game for history class)?

Game development involves many aspects beyond coding, so even students who don't know how to program can contribute to such a project.

If no one in the group can code, they could make a board game instead.

How come when your child is in special Ed it’s hard to get them out.

Hello I’m 27M I don’t have kids. But when I was a teenager in high school I was in this program, where the work was extremely easy. Like elementary school level, when I was a freshman in 9th grade. The program was called the transitional alternative program aka TAP. How I ended up in there I still to this day have no idea why. Because when I was in elementary school I did have special Ed services. But I was in mainstream classes and did work that was at the grade level I was in. The special Ed class I was in during grade school was like a learning center. Where I would go to get help with work from my home room general ed classes. They would have aides help me with the homework. And it benefited me a lot, I was able to stay on track with my assignments and I felt I got to have a normal educational experience. Like the other kids in my age group. I really liked my teachers at my elementary school. They were very nice and very supportive of me and they saw a lot of potential in me. But once I got into secondary education, Aka middle school everything started changing. Now I am on the autism spectrum, I have Asperger’s syndrome, high functioning autism as well as ADD. And the subject I always had tons of trouble with was math. And when I was in middle school In 7th grade I had normal classes I was taking pre algebra And I failed it. I had to take it again in 8th grade. And I was in the same system. Where I would go to the resource center class to get help with my work. And I passed my pre algebra class in 8th barely The teacher I had who was my case manager in middle school she was totally just cold and self centered. Not supportive. Always tried to crush my dreams and hopes. But once high school started everything got 100 times worse. As I mentioned above I was in the TAP class. And for those of you who have not heard of it. It is mostly a class for kids who have very serious disabilities. Like one of those for children that are either handicapped Or mentally retarded. They were giving me simple work that like 3rd grade level like multiplication and devison for math in 9th grade unbelievable as well as word search puzzles. Some of the kids were getting coloring books in high school, Unbelievable. And the teacher who was my case manager was really nasty. She would be really rude to my perents during the IEP meetings. And she as well as the people in the iep would talk to her as if she had no say in what happened. they would literally put out these documents and tell my mother to sign it saying it was a participation thing. That she participated in the meetings, they wouldn’t even let her read it and then later on if my mom disagreed with something they would tell her well you agreed to giving us the authority to make decisions about his services. They literally lied to her about what was in the papers and the agreements, which I don’t know how that can even be legal to me. That is coercion that’s something I feel that the school could get sued for.During the IEP meetings when they would go on, they would set out goals and the goals that they set out were totally ridiculous. Like saying your son is gonna learn how to write in cursive or how to sign his signature. It was torment for my parents and for me because I felt like a total idiot. The people in that class who ran it totally were unsupportive just literally thought that I had no potential in the world and every day I was there I felt humiliated emasculated, and I felt like a worthless piece of shit. I had two periods that I was in the class the other periods where I was in general Ed, I was embarrassed to tell my friends about it. If anyone noticed I was in that class I would lie to them and tell him I was a TA a teachers assistant because I didn’t want to get laughed at. And anytime I would ask my case manager in the class that I wanted changes I told her I would tell her I’d wanna be in regular classes. I don’t wanna be in a class where the work is below remedial level she would lose it like have a temper with me. She didn’t know how to reason and talk things out rationally. So when I started my sophomore year, my parents decided to take action. My dad called to have a special meeting and he spoke on my behalf and said hey my son would like to join and be in regular classes and they said no, and then my dad eventually had it to the point. This was in the middle of my sophomore year like two months into my sophomore year, and I remember at one point my dad had had enough where he said OK well we’re just gonna boycott going to that class. We’re gonna skip the periods that you go to that class and then just come back the periods after. Pretty much trying to make a statement to them how strongly opposed, and my family was to me being in that class so what I would do is I would stay home or I would go to the park and hang out at the park across the street during the hours, I had that class And then I would come back on campus when the periods changed and I had to go to a different class that wasn’t the special ed class. I did this for a week and a half and then one friend I had who was a teachers assistant in that class he was a TA saw me because I had history class with him which was general Ed and he said hey why weren’t you in class this morning. I told him the whole story and I told him please do not tell. Keep your word And then the next day he told my history teacher. And then he went and told my special ed teacher what happened and I went finally and I stood up for myself, and I said I’m tired of being treated like a stupid person and feeling like a second class citizen at this school, like being treated like an outcast and feeling like an outcast from the rest of the kids, I’ve had it. My parents went and tried to appeal my case to the district and we went and met with the head of the special ed department for my school district one day and he said that since it’s already in the middle of the year, we can’t get him out completely. We can try in the next semester and my parents literally told him I don’t want my kids standing in this class one day longer. so after that, my mom got a tip from a friend of mine who also had an IEP. He was also high functioning autistic and was in regular classes. He dealt with the same problem, but it was an elementary school many years earlier and his mother told me and my mom about a. psychiatrist who specialized with children on the spectrum she gave us his business card and we called him and we scheduled an appointment and we met with him three times and he tested me and said that my learning levels were in the normal range and we use this evidence at an IEP meeting and eventually I got out in the middle of my sophomore year and I was so happy and relieved. I felt it was one of the best things that ever happened to me getting out of that program. It literally felt like being in prison like being isolated from everybody else and the reason I’m riding this is pretty much the same thing that I mentioned up top why is it so hard to get your kid out of a special ed class if your kid wants to be in regular classes and he’s willing to work hard and he’s willing to make the sacrifices to do it. It takes to pass those classes. Why can’t the teacher honor the kid and the parents wishes, like why don’t their feelings matter why is it like trying to win a divorce settlement? You’re just trying to get them out of the class it shouldn’t be that hard. I was able to make it through that problem and get on with my high school Experience. I was on the wrestling team and I try and I got to go to the state championships. I got to go to prom. So I didn’t miss out completely on the high school experience. I made lots of friends that So I didn’t miss out completely on the high school experience. I made lots of friends that I’m that many of them, I’m still close with today. But I still feel looking back that there’s a void from that year and a half, almost 2 years of education that was lost and thrown down the drain. For no reason. So I’m gonna continue to ask that question why why do they have to treat kids like this? Why can’t teachers see the best in those kids and give them a chance to be in classes where they can be successful where they’re aiming the highest bar possible, not the lowest.

Going to university at 21

I graduated high school in 2021. I originally planned to take a 1 gap year so l'd go to university in 2022, when 1 was 19. But, shit happens and I didn't end up going.

I planned to go Spain January 2023 my parents didn't agree so for September 2023 also they didn't agree and wanted me to go to university in Tbilisi as my sister is studying there.

I don't want to live with my sister so l didn't agree for it.

January 2024 also they didn't agree and I knew it's getting so late for me so l agreed for Tbilisi but I had an issue in my passport so l was unable to go for winter semester.

Beginning of summer 2024 | applied to Italy because I got the chance to and July I got accepted. I'm excited for it but it's foundation year first and at the end of the foundation year theres IMAT which also includes the subject math and I hate math.

Italy is an amazing opportunity but l'm afraid if I don't make it in IMAT I would be losing another year.

Please I need some advice, should I just deal with my sister and study in Tbilisi or go to Italy because it's a better opportunity?

EDIT: my course is dentistry. In Italy it’s 6 years and Tbilisi it’s 5 years

Common knowledge

Hi there! This might be odd, but it’s been a couple of years since I felt like all the useful and important pieces of information that I have gathered throughout school, university, and life experiences had disappeared from my brain.  History? I used to love it, and I was the best in class at it. I never needed to learn for tests because I would always pay attention to the classes. Now ? I can barely remember the basics, like the beginning of WW1.  Math ? I always thought I hated it; that’s the reason I chose not to deal with any subjects that would include calculus or physics in high school. It turns out that after university, I discovered that I actually like math, finding solutions, and putting my mind to work. But what to do now with the lack of basic information I was supposed to learn in high school? Things aren’t adding up logically or easily. Now I also feel the need to know more about economics and politics since they are shaping our future. Working a full-time job, dealing with daily life—I can’t help but feel overwhelmed and not know where to start or how to do it. If you know any apps or sites where I could find all this information and manage to better understand them and put them to good use, please let me know.

I’m a new college graduate and I’m thinking of getting into a public school teaching career

I’m a college graduate in education and I’m having thoughts in public school teaching. Is it worth it? If it’s a great job, why is there a teacher shortage and schools are hiring many foreign asian teachers instead of local Americans?

Stuff to do at home to get ahead?

I'm a 16 f going to be a senior in highschool this coming school year, and I've been wanting to do some stuff at home to get me more ahead for the school year and college. I was thinking of printing out worksheets if yall have any recommendations please send them. But are there also other things I can do? I'm mainly trying to get ahead in math. The last math class I took was algebra 2. I was also wanting to get ahead more in chemistry and a little in history. For English I think im good but I would love if yall could recommend some grammar worksheets to work on.

i made an AI to help you write letters of recommendation

Hey everyone, I just made this new website which I think might be pretty useful for you guys. It's an AI that helps you write letters of recommendation for your students’ target universities in the format that Martin Walsh (former Stanford Dean of Admissions) recommends. It’s pretty simple, you first background info like names or school and then give 3 bullet points on what makes the student stand out, and it’ll produce a ready to be sent letter of recommendation. Me and my friend demoed it to school counselors at the annual ASCA event and they found it pretty mind-blowing so I thought I’d share it with y’all :)

Check it out here **rb-recommendation.streamlit.app**

What are some high quality fully funded non-STEM scholarships?

Looking for program suggestions beyond the famous suggestions we'd get from Googling the same thing. I have 5 years work experience in editorial, creative multimedia work and product strategy building things from 0 to 1.

By fully funded, I mean tuition as well as campus accomodation being covered. If not available, at least tuition. Comfortable with a shift in careers.

OK with anywhere in the world that's safe, has excellent research and faculty, and good job outcomes. Would love to hear any personal anecdotes you have around this too.

How the Kansas open enrollment law is playing out in Wichita-area schools

School districts in Kansas now operate under the same open enrollment rules, but Maize is one of a handful of districts not accepting nonresident students this fall.

Why is college admissions so competitive now?

I had straight As and a 1560 SAT as well as robotics club and volunteering, and got denied from UW, UMich, and UNC. How do people even get into state flagships now let alone Ivy leagues?
