I recently visited a low income to no income family I know in Kerala with slightly difficult circumstances. Their 16 year old is a smart, bright young man who has done very well in the school he was at, passing grade 10 with distinction. He has taken up the Accountancy stream in grade 11 but when I saw his books I noticed that they were last updated around 30 years ago! (His school follows State curriculum, which he goes to due to cost and accessibility factors). The other day he told me that he was bored with what he was learning and he realized that it had no value for the current day, which is absolutely right.
We live in a world where you don’t have to memorize information by rote, and the objective is to develop personality, communication skills, life skills in general only to mention a few.
I would like to explore ideas for him to help him evolve and open up opportunities that can pave the way to bettering his whole family’s life.
I was thinking of getting the child a laptop and a good wifi connection. What do you think about suggesting for him? ⁃ homeschooling options? Do they exist in Kerala? The idea is to get him through the current stage (11/12 grade) with an updated and more meaningful curriculum so that he doesn’t have to waste his youth having to study clearly outdated information. ⁃ Udemy/ coursera suggestions? Free but good courses to help upgrade his knowledge ⁃ Ideas to explore for himself in digital media/ others? I’m throwing this out there hoping we can help this child out and not let him get stuck in a situation where he does not learn anything meaningful in school and ends up frustrated/ bored.
