What, for an individual, is the purpose and objective of education?

I've been thinking about my children's education. I think this is a more straightforward a question on a societal level, but on an individual level I have no idea. Any intuitive answer I can come up with is either too broad to be useful (e.g. prepare someone to succeed in the world... ok, how do we do that?) or too narrow to be useful (e.g meet these 500 learning objectives by age X, all of which seem arbitrary).

I'm really just trying to have a conceptual framework to think about what is and is not useful to my children as they grow.
