Educational Timeline Game

Hi everyone!

Back in high school, I admittedly was not very interested in history classes. I thought it was boring having to listen to lectures about people who were already dead.

About a month ago, I found this board game called timeline where you place historical events on a timeline. In my opinion, this was a much more interactive way to learn history (compared to looking through a slide deck). Thought it would be helpful to share it in this community.

You can access the game here. Would love to hear everyone's thoughts. Thanks!

Are teachers allowed to tell students there will be a quiz next week, but the specific day will be a surprise?

And if a student refuses to take the quiz, claiming it couldn't have been a surprise, would they be allowed to skip it? Clearly, a quiz on Friday would not be a surprise. But then, a quiz on Thursday wouldn't be a surprise either, and so on. Since a surprise quiz was not possible under these conditions, the student assumed there would be no quiz at all. (Try Googling the "surprise test paradox" for details.)

Are there any classes I can take that aren’t through a college?

I graduated high school in 2023. I tried community college and it was not for me at all. I now work a full time job but I miss learning stuff like I would in school. Does anyone know of any online classes that someone not affiliated with a college can take?

Leaving traditional public - should next school be public magnet or private?

I have 2 middle schoolers in a Suburban public school. Both are pretty athletic, consistently get great grades, no behavioral issues, and all around ideal students.

We want to move them from this traditional 6A public school for several reasons, the main one being to be exposed to a more rigorous academic setting.

The 2nd big reason is the growth of the population around us. Literally everywhere we turn, entire neighborhoods are being built. Our district hit 20k student last year and is constantly growing. The district has to redraw the boundary lines every 3-4 years due to growth. It’s crazy. It’s just too many kids here.

We feel like we have 2 options for next school year: #1, apply for/get accepted into one of the top magnet programs in my state. This would be a 5A inner city public school (free, of course) and I would have to provide transportation. No biggie since the school is by my job. The school was a 2023 Blue Ribbon school, if that says anything. My girls are minorities, so there would be a lot more diversity there than in our current suburban school.

Or #2, attend a private school with even less diversity then they have right now, and that participates in 4A athletics. We aren’t SUPER religious people. We do teach our girls about the basics of being good people and attend church when we can. The private schools offered have different denominations and some were even recommended by atheists since they didn’t feel like religion was being shoved down their throats. We identify as Christians though.

I’ve never attended a private or magnet school but I want opinions on others’ experiences. I’m not really sure what all I need to consider (other than cost) to make the right decision. Would you choose private even if you had access to a top magnet? How big of a role should diversity play in the decision? What else do I need to consider? The goal is for both my girls to get either academic or athletic scholarships to any extent for college.

Looking for (nice) opinions from all angles from parents, students, teachers etc.

TLDR: Leaving suburban public school. Should next school be top public magnet in the state? Or a private school?

Is this normal? Telling my story

Hi there, I went through an experience in my first year teaching about a year ago that I just want thoughts on.

Last year after graduating with my undergrad I was hired on at a I would say below average district as a behavioral special Ed teacher. My students did also struggle with academics and could not access the regular curriculum. I will also note here that from the beginning the principal was speaking negatively about the last teacher in my role. Also worth noting that the previous year there had been 4 students and 2 paras, and this year there would be 3 students and 1 para. By November there were no more paras as they were moved to gen ed.

Anyway, I was given the unique learning system but no one else at my school was using it and when I asked my sped director who was also my mentor for help she just said that she didn’t know the curriculum. Additionally, there were behavior issues in my classroom and if a student bolted and I walkied for help (me being the only one in there with 3 kids) the principal got upset about it.

Additionally when I was observed the only feedback I got was that it was terrible. I think there is supposed to be a given time frame. During PT conferences I also learned that I am the third person in this role in 3 years. I was also given a new curriculum to figure out with little guidance and when I asked the sped director/my mentor for help she told me to figure it out like every other teacher.

Needless to say this was all having a large impact on my physical and mental health. I don’t like saying this but from the first day of orientation I was having diarrhea EVERY SINGLE morning before school. No exceptions. Only on school days. A couple months in I was crying the whole way to work and sobbing during my preps and lunch every day. By November I would become unresponsive to my family, just get home and sit and shake on the couch. Right before thanksgiving break, I could not even stand up when teaching because I felt physically sick at 22 years old.

Eventually right before thanksgiving I texted my dad from my school saying that I would harm myself if I did not go to the hospital that day. I finished the school day and my dad picked me up and brought me to a crisis center for an evaluation. I was in a crisis. The worker said that I have to take the day off (a Friday) and that’s what I did. I ended up going to the ER on the Sunday for mental health and they said I could not go back to work indefinitely due to my mental health, and said I needed to go inpatient or do a partial hospitalization program, which is what I ended up doing. When I sent my doctors note to the school, I was fired on the same day.

No one asked me how I was, if I was okay, they just fired me. And they said that they were going to do it if I was “sick” or not. After this experience, I did complete a hospitalization program and began looking for jobs again in late December/january. I applied for many different kinds of things, like museums and in home therapy and schools. I got around 5 offers, one being from a middle school wanting me to be a sped teacher.

I ended up becoming a building sub at a high end district in my area and took over a maternity leave for a 4th grade teacher. I am still at my school as a building sub while I’m in grad school for mental health counseling and I have to say I am a favorite at my school. No one knows what happened at the previous school, I didn’t put it on my resume, but I wanted to share my story and see if anyone else went through something similar and whether this is commonplace.

In a lesson who students don't love and finding boring in my country, im loving this lesson and joining to the lesson with answering questions etc. But with an effect of tiredness, i slept in one of her lessons. Now, teacher reminded it to me 2 times a day in the lesson. Causing me becoming sad and shy. What should i do?

As a college student from a very poor background with disability accommodations and FAFSA student loans, I'm terrified for how I might be affected if the DOE gets shut down. Spanish language education in the US

Is Spanish taught any differently in border states, or states with a higher percentage of Spanish speakers compared to other US states?

I worked as an ESL instructor at the university level in the US for many years, and it made me think about how we address second language education when the language is a necessity compared to when it is seen (at least widely by many) as an accessory to a college application. I went to high school in the northeast, and I studied French, Spanish and German and they were all taught the same way, even though I had near a zero percent chance of running into a French or German speaker. Are curriculums or teaching methods different for Spanish in border communities given that the language has a practical application?

I need your advice.

so, I fucked around a lot with my studies.

right after graduating, I went to study fine arts and even if I think it’s something that fits me the most, I was immature and definitely not ready for living alone and going to uni.

next year, I went to study japanase in another city and I found it interesting as well (and I was rly good at it) but there were problems with my dorm (and my mental health) and I dropped out again.

see, I know not everything requires a degree but I rly want one. ik I might not end up in these fields, but it’s a goal I have in mind. I don’t know which uni I should go back to. I don’t have much time to decide rn.

my feelings are mixed. I’m attracted by the city in which I studied the last time. I love literally everything abt it, it feels like home. I RLY want to live there. but. art is something that’s a lot closer to me and sg I always did and I feel super guilty for not finishing my art degree. I’m so jealous of ppl who attend that uni that it makes me want to drown myself. still, it takes hours to get to that city, and I just didn’t like living there, it felt depressing and not inspiring to be there. it takes 2x the time to get there. plus, I will have to do entrance exams again to get in. and wait till september. I have to decide bcs next february, I can go back to the japanase university and if that’s the case, I will have to quit my job at the end of this month.

I rly need your help. thank you if you read it.

I need advice

Hey all :) please redirect me if I’m in the wrong place. I’m 24f. I graduated with a bachelors in communication studies last year. Thought i wanted to do journalism. I now am interested in going into education. I’ve been substitute teaching at home & bartending and i really enjoy being in the school. Being an English teacher is always something I’ve wanted to do, at home in the US, and abroad for a while. I don’t have any teaching qualifications right now. I’m sort of at a cross roads trying to figure out what i want to do. I’m stuck between two options. One being moving to a city near me, probably philly, and getting my qualifications to get licensed and start teaching. The second being teach abroad for a couple years first probably somewhere like spain through a program. I studied abroad for a year in college and absolutely loved it and have been dreaming about going back since. I’m stuck because i feel like if i want to teach abroad i should go now, as i have older parents and might not want to leave them in a few years. But i also want to get my education career started and think it might be “smarter” to start working towards my license now. What would you do? :)

Should teachers teach while an AI representing the students in attendance frequently asks questions in real-time about what the teacher is saying?

If the students in attendance don't submit any questions to the AI, it will simulate a typical student in the class and ask appropriate questions during the lesson.

If students do submit questions, the AI will prioritize those that reflect the areas students are struggling with most and ask them in real-time as the teacher speaks.

This way, even in classes where few or no students ask the teacher questions directly, the AI could ask many relevant questions throughout the lesson.

Is my school allowed to install program-viewing and website blockers on my personal laptop?

This is just a question i have and i would like answers since my school wont give me any. Im currently in the process of purchasing a personal laptop. I asked the school if it was okay for me to handle everything with my laptop. They said this was okay. Now, because its my personal laptop they said it wont be covered under the schools warranty. Which makes sense. But know here comes the confusing part, for me at least. Is my school allowed to put software on my computer without my consent that restricts what i am able to do on it? If i dont use the schools provided devices, or their own network. Do they have the right to make changes to MY personal device?

Reason why im asking is because i plan to use this device after i finish school, and i dont want spyware and restrictions on my own laptop. Especially when trying to install programs ect.

Now i understand this is probably entirely dependent on the schools policy. But i would like a general answer, What most schools do at least.

For your information my school is located in Australia, Queensland, Sunshine Coast

tl;dr Is my school allow to install programs on my personal laptop without my consent?

"The Odyssey" discourse. What else don't I know?

I'm a 30 year old high school dropout. I have severe ADHD and was not diagnosed until adulthood. I learned absolutely nothing in school. I don't even know what I didn't learn.

I've been seeing the posts about The Odyssey on Twitter and I vaguely remember being taught about Greek & Roman mythology in middle school but I never paid attention. It has me thinking about how much I've always wanted to make up for what I missed as a child/teen but it also reminds me how hard it is to try to learn about new things when you don't even know where to start.

I had to google The Odyssey. All the comments are making me feel like an idiot but it's kind of a wake up call. I do feel like it's actually valuable to know that there's something that everyone learned except me so I know what I should be looking into.

I'm wondering what else there is that is similar to this. Things that everyone learned, or was supposed to learn, that most people understand is common knowledge. Please let me know what you learned in school that you think everyone should know about.

What do theory vs practical learning styles teach us about different brains?

As I've gotten older I have noticed more and more how just how differently my father and I process information.

We both get a long great, he's one of my best friends, but I do cringe a little bit at just how incapable he is of conceptualising things. He is getting older (85) but he's very healthy and has displayed the below traits his whole life.

I'm curious as to what the followimg traits might be an indicator of? I'd like to understand my dad better and help him to understand himself better. He is currently trying to learn a new skill and is struggling to keep up with the concepts (on the zoom classes)

Okay here are the traits (the positive ones are at the end)

Traits that demonstrate his struggle:

  • Struggles to abstract sounds from words and ooften relies on phonetic pronunciations without realising it.

  • Struggles with keeping up with theoretical conversations whether it's basic legal, medical or philosophical conversations and will often revert to common tropes that he is familiar with in order to feel that he is a part of the conversation rather than formulating and articulating ideas in real time.

  • Often closes his eyes while trying to talk since it's hard for him to keep what he is trying to say in his mind and speak at the same time

  • Relies on people to endure his 'word salad lectures' in order to feel that he is a part of the conversation

  • Very forgetful and often loose things, forget names, make up names etc

  • Has very little interest in being 'accurate" conceptually. Just today he was talking his 'scoliosis' on his knee. I asked "isn't scoliosis a spinal thing?" After which he started talking about arthritis and inflammation. I eventually circled back and said "oh I see, it says here scoliosis is definitely a spinal thing, but are you saying that scoliosis is affecting your knee?" He then replied "yes! Exactly". (Turns out it was Schumann's disease not scoliosis 😅). Side note; he has been dealing with these same issues for 30 years with his Osteopath, so he should have learned this by now. He also often refers to his Osteo as his chiro, even though he often talks about how much better an Osteo is than a Chiro).

  • Struggles with discernment and is easily misled by others.

  • Struggles with technology (not just through lack of experience, but with basic interpretation of signals. For example if the computer asks "are you sure you want to replace the existing file" this may take me 30 mins to explain. I find that I have to 'personify' computers to explain. "The computer is just trying to be considerate. It wants to give you a choice, make a new file with the changes, or simply update the current file" he typically will say something like "but I already made the changes?" And on it goes 🤪

Positives (strengtns, abilities and processing styles)

  • Very practical person that is able to come up with solutions in a very "boot's on the ground" kind of way - his professions have included: Graphic artist (before computers), underwater photographer, gardener (built aborate garden scapes and a rockwall/water feature for our pool from scratch)

  • Told me story once about when he did a diving course and struggled with the theory but as soon as he got in the water he knew what to do whilst all the 'academics' of the group were struggling to apply the theory.

  • Incredible at visual art

  • Very practical in terms of implementation. In contrast I will often get lost in abstract ideas like what we should for Christmas day and he will just ground it and keep it simple.

If you have read this far, thank you for being a part of my attempts to solve the enigma that is my dad. I do have my own theory; such as that he is simply an artistic person with SCT/CDS but I would love for any other ideas.

What do you call information such as knowing the order and names of the planets?

What I mean is that it isn't information that you really need to function daily. Nobody is going to go to another planet. Or the names of other countries. Generally people aren't going to other countries on a daily basis or need that information.

You aren't going to use that information on a daily basis to live, but still it is information that is information that it is good to know. Is there a name for this type of information?

🧠 What Memorization Does to Your Brain? The Side Effects Nobody Talks About.

Every time you memorize something, your brain physically changes - it's like a biological workout for your neurons.

Here's what happens when you actively memorize: 1️⃣ Your brain creates new neural pathways Think of it like carving a path through a forest. The more you use this path (recall information), the clearer and stronger it becomes. 2️⃣ Your hippocampus - your brain's memory center - actually grows Studies show that people who regularly exercise their memory have a larger, more active hippocampus. This is crucial for both short and long-term memory formation. 3️⃣ You build cognitive reserve Like a savings account for your brain, memorization creates backup neural networks. This resilience can protect against cognitive decline as you age.

But here's the concerning part... In our digital age, we're outsourcing our memory to devices. When was the last time you memorized a phone number? Or remembered an appointment without setting a reminder? 🤔 This raises an important question: Are we trading long-term cognitive health for short-term convenience? 👋 Your turn: What's the last thing you actively tried to memorize? Or are you, like many of us, leaving it all to technology?

By the way, I’m doing an independent research about memory, learning, information retention in this new world, where people loses most of their energy on social media and haven’t enough energy, motivation/will to the task he/she should’ve done. I’m building prendi.cv, I plan to make it, the #1 most efficient language learning system that combines cognitive science, AI algorithms, and community-based learning to help users master any language faster and more effectively. 210+ others are on the waitlist.

Where Do Primary Teachers Find Good Worksheets/Practice Materials for Students?

Competency based education: why doesn't it already work that way?

https://calmatters.org/education/higher-education/2024/12/competency-based-education/

This immediately comes to mind a model for doing this. Classes are held but the teacher acts more like a TA, answering questions and giving students 1:1 time. There are no homeworks and no midterms, instead you can take exams at the testing center, available every day(testing center is a room where you have to give up any devices and take the exam while proctored). Similarly classes are available year round, with different teachers staffing the center for this subject.

Fail an exam and you perhaps have a delay before taking it again (and it's a random draw from a question bank or something), but it doesn't slap your transcript with F/C/B and harm your chances in the future.

Finacial aid etc require some minimum rate of completion of credits (passing exams) but if you can afford it you can take any length of time.

Is the model we have just an accident of history? Why doesn't it already work like this?

A very useful Spelling App, you got to try 👀

For any parents or teachers looking for a good good spelling app, please download and try Spelliful. If you try I’m always open to new features and improvements.

Spelliful is a weekly spelling / vocabulary word app. Easily create a list to add your own words and attach audio, video or image to each word. Group your list by students or kids names. Do a spelling unscramble activity or take test, both providing your audio video or image as hints if needed. Don’t want to record your voice then use the system voice instead. Voice is needed for testing, however for hearing impaired mode, the image or video provided is used. Very useful for sign language videos.

Spelliful is fully functional and free to the learning users, (kids and students). You can, as the adult, take advantage of the premium feature of uploading list with all media attached to words and distributing via a generated code. This feature is for purchase but isn’t necessary for the average user. If you’re a teacher and you easily want mass distribution it’s very useful. Uploading and sharing is found in the Teacher’s Desk portion of the app.

You can search Spelliful in the iOS AppStore but I provided a link below.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/spelliful/id1451278821?ls=1&mt=8

Teacher randomly changing the school curriculum for PE. Now some of my classmates have to get low scores on not dancing at a food drive event.

IS THIS EVEN FAIR?

PETAs or performance tasks are the major project we do that holds the most percentage in our grade.

The teachers here act with a huge ego. Always gossiping about students behind their backs. Thankfully there are some who act like decent human beings and some are just CRAZY to think about that they are a human with a degree. Like what I am about to write in here! During my first quarter our PE teacher explained our curriculum, etc. For our second quarter it will be focused on the swimming subject. Well, during the conflicts of schedule the teacher had during the second quarter. They weren't able to take us out to the school pool very often. We only swam ONCE. And it wasn't even graded. Our final swim class meant to showcase our skills and finalize our grade in our PETA. got cancelled because of conflict in schedule again with another subject. Our PE teacher ended up giving us a full 100% on our final peta. After this. Completion week already finished. Grades assumingly already calculated. Our advisor announces that because my class won champion at a dance competition last quarter (PE Class peta) we will be dancing again. for a FOOD DRIVE. They announced it during our school intrams. And now, my class only has 2 days to master an old dance AGAIN. with only 3 hours every day. And now my PE teacher is threatening us that if we won't participate we'll see damages in our grade.

Is this fair? Should I back out, PETAs in my school are like. 30 percent of our grade. But at the same time. It doesn't sound believable to me... that they would threaten student's grades....

I want to create ed tech that gets kids to love learning. I started with a vocabulary app.

I performed pretty well in school but my motivation was entirely performance/competition based, I tried to get the best grade possible and didn't care about what I was learning.

Fast forward to when I started my first job (software), I realized that it's actually both helpful and fun to be curious, question the world, and learn new things. But I really wish I figured this out when I was 12 instead of 22, because I could've learned a lot in that decade.

For example, I studied hard in calculus because I wanted a good GPA. I figured I would never need to use it again. But this year I started studying machine learning for my job (I work with a lot of machine learning scientists), and it's entirely based on calculus. Would've paid way more attention if I knew what it was USED for instead of just learning how to compute derivatives.

Anyways, now I have this dream of helping with educational reform, and getting kids more excited about what they're learning and HOW what they're learning is useful in the world. And I know this will probably piss a lot of people in this subreddit off, but I do think that recent advancements in AI will help achieve this goal. Voice generation, video generation, and more can all be used to help create engaging content for kids, rather than hearing from a guy who is just counting down the years until his pension locks in and he can quit.

So, I've started with a vocabulary app that teaches by letting you see words in-context, over and over. It allows you to take simple, fill in the blank quizzes that are created from a large library of example sentences. It's full of advanced but commonly used words like "esoteric", "ephemeral", "vicissitude", etc... The idea is that seeing words is what actually teaches you what a word means and how to use it, as opposed to looking at the definition.

The app is called "nodu" on the Apple app store if you're interested.

Would love to hear others thoughts on how you see education changing over the next 20 years.

I don't want to send my daughter to school uk

My daughter is 4, she will be starting school next September. She has developmental delay, she has only just starting putting words together a little and most of them aren't clear. She can't have a conversation back and forth, she's probably at the stage a 2 year old is with communication.

She also has some birth defects, she has a double thumb and no enamel on her teeth so her teeth look brown and bumpy even though we brush twice a day which she is brilliant with. Some children have asked her if she doesn't brush her teeth or why her teeth are moldy looking and brown and she can't respond or understand why, I try to explain to her but it's like she isn't understanding. It breaks my heart on levels I can't explain and her thumb, people asking why her thumb is like that or ew. (I didn't have her thumb removed when she was little because she had major heart concerns so it was at the bottom of our list, then we decided whilst she can't make her own decisions we didn't want to put her at risk of anything happening with anesthesia for something cosmetic).

I just really really don't want to send her to school. I feel like I'm putting her out there to get bullied and she is so loving which makes it harder. She started walking at age 3 and has a tight calf so she doesn't have great balance still and can't pull her trousers down to toilet so I also really don't want a stranger doing that for her, especially when she can't communicate or tell me if something happens. She isn't great with eating or drinking I have to prompt her to eat or drink as she gets bored after a few bites.

I have thought about homeschooling but I honestly don't know if I have it in me, I could do it for a few years but if the plan is to eventually send her to school I would need to be fully on it teaching her the full curriculum.

I wish there was an in-between school like a part time one even one parents could attend or one that was more free flow and creative, growing the child instead of heavy focus on grades etc. because I already don't like the current education system, it didn't do anything for me either, I think all I left school with was no self confidence.

Please help me in anyway, the thought of school is literally making me feel sick.

Is reading dead? Does the rise of video-based learning kill it?

Our brains process visuals faster than text. With video-based tools on the rise, is traditional reading becoming obsolete for learning?

Imagine replacing endless articles and reports with quick, engaging videos that get straight to the point. More effective? Probably. A shortcut for laziness? Maybe.

Is this evolution or just another distraction? Would love to hear where you stand. And what actual scientific research says.

Can a superintendent reveal to a person who reported them? Is it legal?

Hi all, Im a teacher aide and this year I was surprised to know that my assailant started working at my school site. I asked the vice principal how she could help me, if I could get moved to another location or something of the sort. She said it was out of her power so she said I needed to talk to the superintendent. I had a meeting with him where I told him I didn’t want to be around this person as it was a traumatic experience for me and seeing him at work was reawakening all these bad feelings and repressed memories. He made a whole investigation, said person was off campus for a few days while the investigation was ongoing and as he’s a mandated reporter I had to report the SA to authorities. Also I KNEW if I didn’t report it to the cops, the district would keep me in the same place where I’d have to see this person so I felt like I had to report but I decided to not press charges as all the evidence I had of him admitting to coercing me sexually was gone years ago. With the report, they decided to ban the person from the school and keep me at the location. He retaliated and lit my car on fire as he knew where I lived (it’s a small town). It was not my intention to get him fired nor did I want him to know I was the person who made complaint. I was hoping they would just move me like how I wanted but ya know, it was out of my control I guess. I even told the superintendent it wasn’t a big deal if they kept him, I JUST WANTED TO BE MOVED. My question is, does anyone know if because of Title IX the superintendent had the right to “reveal” to this person I had made the complaint? I am very upset and this whole situation has caused me a lot of emotional and mental turmoil. I have become agoraphobic from the fear of seeing him out in public. I will probably be consulting an attorney or lawyer but I just want to know if there’s even a case here.

My friend and I are building a tool to automatically grade handwritten worksheets and homework

We realized that teachers spend easily 3+ hours a week grading handwritten assignments. That’s a lot of time that could be spent actually teaching or, you know, not working overtime. So, we thought, why not build something that makes this easier?

Here’s how it works:

  • Educators upload pictures of their students' handwritten assignments
  • Our tool reads the answers, automatically grades them, and evaluates performance
  • You get back the results: grading for each question, student scores, and insights like strengths and areas for improvement

We’re demoing it out with schools, private tutors, and parents to gather feedback. And honestly, we’d love to hear what you think too. Does this sound useful to you or anyone you know?

Appreciate your time and thanks for reading!

What will happen to SPED and FSC if the DOE is abolished?

In light of the new president elects plans to abolished the DOE, I’ve been really concerned about the special education students and teachers that will be harmed by this, and as an RBT who works in-school for a private company, I’m highly concerned and also VERY lost about where that leaves us as employees as well as the students. We aren’t really talking about it (or perhaps there is conversation but since I work for a private company and not directly under the DOE, I don’t attend such meetings). I have NO idea what this means for my students and coworkers.

If anyone who knows WAY more about politics can chip in, pls give me a run down of what will follow the Worst case scenario that Trump will dismantle the DOE on day 1 in Office.

I live in a liberal state and work in a public school, however I’m aware that RBTs are extremely expensive and also that there are so many DOE regulations that have kept my current client in school and out of suspension for his behaviors and I’m very worried about what this might mean for him and his peers for the next four years. will I even have a job?

How can we fix public school lunches?

I ate at a primary school recently where about half the kids brought their lunch, and about half got the hot school lunch. I didn't see a single kid eat the school lunch ("disgusting!") one said. The brought lunches weren't theoretically as healthy as the school lunches (lots of processed kid snacks) but they had some redeeming value (cheese, yogurt, nuts) and the kids were eating them. At the end they passed out a round of Hostess SnoBalls (be grateful if you don't know what these are) so, I guess, the school lunch kids would have something in their stomachs. I don't see a lot of point in passing out lunches no one's eating. How can we fix this?

How can technology help teachers in underfunded schools?

I grew up going to Title 1 schools and I was lucky to have phenomenal teachers that pushed me to be better than my circumstances and excelled despite them having less tools to work with. I’m now studying computer science in college and I want use what I’ve learned to try to make something that can help make up for those lack of tools given to educators.

To those who work in the system I would love to hear your input: are there any problems you’re seeing or dealing with that you think technology can help fix? Is there a free online resource or tool that if existed you feel could improve the quality of learning for students or the quality of life for teachers?

Do you think high school student governments should have "real" power?

I just had a thought, and I'm curious to know what others think. What if students could hold debates on added extra-curriculums, like wood and metal shop, bicycle mechanics, clay sculpting, as well as languages? Potentially even the length of the (following)school year(within reason, and they still have to complete the curriculum)? With minimal influence beyond informative from administrators, and obviously staying within policy restrictions.

I think it could encourage students to be more active in their student governments(granted I've been out of school about a decade now), especially if they saw that their voices could enact real change, even if on a relatively small scale(a high school), and in turn, encourage more young adults to be both informed, and active in their local, and federal governments after graduation

am i allowed to ask other teachers for help?

i’m aware this is a silly question but i’m genuinely unsure by it.

i don’t understand the way my science teacher teaches — i’ve tried coming to him and asking one on one, but i’m still not understanding. i’ve tried reading the textbook, googling it, and asking my mom for help lol, but i just can’t grasp the concept.

and my math teacher from last year is also a science teacher, and he said once he enjoys physics the most (the unit i’m struggling with). i’ve never had him for science but i thought it would be worth a try to ask him, since everyone explains things differently.

i’m just wondering if he’s allowed to help me? is it wrong to ask him for help? i’m just really struggling and i dunno what else to do.

Students over 2 miles must use carline?

I drive close to the school and walk my child to the gate every morning. The same gate that kids who walk with or without supervision from parents enter from. It's much faster than car line and gets my kid a little bit of activity in the morning to warm up.

Well, we got a notice stating kids who live over 2 miles away must use carline. Is this enforceable? Are they going to stand at the gate with a clip board with ever childs address to confirm they live less than 2 miles away? Are they going to deny our kid every to school? I highly doubt that...

I'm still going to walk my kid... But just wondering if this is enforceable at all.

bullying as a kid hinder your academic potential?

hi guys,

i have a lot of anger toward the people who "bullied" or "looked down upon me" in school (especially high school). my parents sometimes still bring up my high school grades/performance which were not very good, and say they wish i had performed better and gotten into a good college. i have a high ego and although it's been years since high school i haven't told them about how mean people were to me (just don't want anyone to know). 100% sure if it wasn't for the mean kids i wouldn't have been so sad and would have performed better. anyways, does anyone here think their school performance or someone's they know wasn't great because of the "popular/mean kids?" i still get angry about this topic from time to time when i remember high school and hope schools start taking bullying more seriously

Quite awful score on STAR test

Recently I took the STAR reading and math test, my reading and math tests have both always been extremely high for my age. Hence, I am in the grade above for math since my school does not offer and honors program for math or english. I got the results back for my math assessment and it is quite awful. Almost every single part of it i scored awfully on. It says I am still above 79% of the people in my grade, but I have an extremely awful score. I have a couple of questions and some concerns.

  1. Will this get me kicked out of the advanced class?

  2. Will a college see this?

  3. Will this impact my ability to take AP classes in the future?

My concerns are that I played contact sports for many years and have suffered multiple concussions from that and not from that. I can very easily get a concussion now since I have had multiple. My most recent concussion was last year. Before then my STAR tests were much above my grade level in math and reading. Now, my math assessment is extremely awful. I have been having issues recalling subjects I had learned and felt like I didn’t know anything on the assessment.

The concussion in question was from when I had taken a pretty serious fall and banged the back of my head on concrete. I don’t remember exactly what I felt like after but I remember everything for the next few weeks feeling very foggy. My academic performance definitely decreased and since then I have had issues in math.

My teacher has also played contact sports and I feel like he would understand this. I have talked to my parents about this but they haven’t seen my score yet. Should I talk to my doctor/teacher/parents? Or should I wait until either my teacher or parents say something.

Here is the transcript of the email i received with my score:

score of 1137 on the Star Math test is based on the difficulty of the questions and the number of correct responses. The scale has a range of 600 - 1400. This score results in a placement in Level 2, below the target of Level 3. It is higher than 79% of students in 9th grade. Domain Scores These scores range from 0-100, and represent estimated percent of mastery at a 9th-grade level. Beginning: 0-59 percent mastery Developing: 60-79 percent mastery Secure: 80-100 percent mastery

Algebra Score Seeing Structure in Expressions 26 Arithmetic with Polynomials and Rational Expressions 52 Creating Equations 47 Reasoning with Equations and Inequalities 45 Functions Score Interpreting Functions 60 Building Functions 42 Linear, Quadratic, and 45 Exponential Models Number and Quantity Score

The Real Number System 47 Quantities 47 Statistics and Probability Interpreting Categorical and Quantitative Data Score 71

All of the stuff I saw on the assessment I do partially remember from last year but I couldn’t figure out how to solve it.

(I am M14 Freshman taking a 10th grade class)

Edit: Does this also make me technically “disabled” and will i be forced to enter special education or a 504 plan? (If the concussion caused serious injury to my brain

This teacher must have really been struggling and lacked any personal support system. That's the only explanation I can think of that led to what happened.

A Texas first grade teacher lost her job after withdrawing bathroom privileges due to her students acting out in the hallway. As a result, up to five children wet themselves. I'm just having a hard time thinking of the circumstances that convinced the teacher that this was the right choice. It had to be a breakdown, right?

Challenges you faced while writing your master thesis or doctoral dissertation

1. Finding a suitable research topic: One of the biggest challenges is narrowing down a broad research area into a specific, focused topic that is both interesting and feasible. This requires careful consideration of personal interests, academic relevance, and the availability of resources.

2. Time management and procrastination: Writing a thesis or dissertation is a time-consuming process that often requires juggling multiple responsibilities, such as coursework, work, and personal commitments.

 3. Research and data collection: Gathering relevant research materials and collecting data can be challenging, especially when dealing with limited access to resources or complex research methods. Ensuring the quality and reliability of data is crucial for a strong thesis or dissertation

Would you take this opportunity? Of what should I be aware? I would greatly appreciate insights from people currently teaching/ studying in the US!

How do I stop my teacher from telling my parents I cheated in school?

So I got caught cheating in a quiz by my teacher and confiscated my ID (I put a paper in it with some answers and looked down on it when I didn't know the answer). So what can I do to stop my teacher from telling it to my parents? I've been doing hard work in my studies but lately this one particular subject has been driving me to the ground, I don't know why but even though I have studied somehow I get low scores so I panicked and decided on cheating. I regret it so bad, and I really don't wanna do it again. I swore to myself that I won't cheat after this time but Unfortunately right after I said that to myself I got caught. I regret everything.

How do teachers deal with students asking weird questions in class?

For example, what would you say if a student asked, "Wouldn't humans going extinct mean the end of human suffering?".

"Expensive lessons: Charting the rise of college tuition fees"

"Expensive lessons: Charting the rise of college tuition fees" highlights the financial burden of higher education in the U.S. and recent developments in the student loan debate. Private lender SoFi has filed a lawsuit against the Department of Education to end the 36-month suspension of student loan billing. Meanwhile, President Biden's proposed student debt forgiveness plan, which could erase up to $20,000 in debt for 40 million borrowers, faces legal challenges in the Supreme Court.

The piece also underscores the soaring costs of college education. Since 1980, tuition fees have risen by 1246%, far outpacing overall inflation (285%). Costs for textbooks and other educational materials have surged by 949%, further fueling skepticism about the value of a college degree. This financial strain has contributed to a decline in college enrollment, which dropped by 4.1% in 2022.

Lack of minorities in law, the roots of it all.

Teachers and/or students, what are your thoughts on this? Currently doing research and would love feedback from the people that experience this first hand with their students or perhaps you are the student yourself.

As someone with experience teaching in a Title I school, I have seen the disparities in educational opportunities between students in underfunded schools and their peers in better-resourced districts. While this is not the case for everyone, it is undeniable that many minority students face systemic barriers that begin long before law school. If the ABA is committed to addressing the underrepresentation of minorities in the legal profession, it must examine the roots of these challenges and the impact they have on hardworking individuals striving to succeed.

  1. Early Education DisparitiesMinority students in underfunded schools often lack access to high-quality teaching, advanced coursework, and extracurricular resources. This creates a gap in foundational skills, leaving these students at a disadvantage when competing with peers from well-funded schools. The 2023 STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) results illustrate these disparities:
    • Algebra I Performance (Grades 3-8):
      • White students: ~60% meeting grade level
      • Hispanic students: ~45%
      • African American students: ~34%
      • Asian students: ~78%
    • English I and II Performance:
      • White students: ~56% meeting grade level
      • Hispanic students: ~41%
      • African American students: ~31%
      • Asian students: ~75%
    • Social Studies (Grade 8):
      • White students: ~45% meeting grade level
      • Hispanic students: ~23%
      • African American students: ~18%
      • Asian students: ~67%
  2. Additionally, economic disadvantage compounds these challenges. The STAAR results reveal significant performance gaps between economically disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged students. For example:
    • Mathematics (Grades 3-8):
      • Economically disadvantaged students: ~42% meeting grade level
      • Non-disadvantaged students: ~65% meeting grade level
    • Reading and Language Arts (Grades 3-8):
      • Economically disadvantaged students: ~45% meeting grade level
      • Non-disadvantaged students: ~71% meeting grade level

These disparities highlight the systemic inequities in resource distribution that disproportionately affect minority and economically disadvantaged students.

  1. Undergraduate and LSAT ChallengesBy the time these students reach college, they are often playing catch-up. Despite their resilience and determination, the lack of equitable preparation impacts their performance on critical benchmarks like the LSAT. Research by Aaron Taylor, Executive Director of AccessLex, highlights that the average LSAT score varies significantly by race. For white and Asian test takers, the average score is 153, while the average for Black test takers is 142 and for Latino test takers is 146.On a test where scores range between 120 and 180, this 11-point score differential between white and Black test takers is incredibly consequential. Driven in part by this stark disparity, 49% of Black law school applicants were not admitted to a single law school.
  2. Limited Law School OptionsLower LSAT scores restrict access to law schools with strong bar preparation programs, forcing many minority students into schools with low bar passage rates. These students are not incapable; the system continues to fail them by providing fewer resources and opportunities for success.
  3. Fear of FailureI have heard from minorities who are scared to apply to law school because they fear they will fail. Now, you might think this isn't our problem, that this mindset is their own responsibility. But let’s stop and think—where does this mindset come from? This fear of failure is deeply rooted in their experiences with past education systems that have let them down. These individuals are part of America—the future of America. Their fear isn’t unfounded; it stems from years of systemic neglect and inequities in their education. Addressing this fear means addressing the broader issues that caused it, starting with the foundational inequities in their early schooling.
  4. Reflecting on Title I StudentsI often think about my students—those I taught when I was a student teacher and after graduation, many of whom were in Title I schools. Just because this isn’t happening to you, your siblings, your children, or your friends, we must not turn a blind eye and twiddle our fingers, repeatedly saying "lower percentage" in minorities while failing to truly address the issue. The ABA’s efforts to create programs for diversity and inclusion are commendable, and I respect that the organization is trying. But let’s be real—it starts from the roots. Without addressing the foundational issues in early education and systemic inequities, these efforts cannot reach their full potential.
  5. A Call to ActionIf the ABA truly wants to address this issue, it must not turn a blind eye to the roots of the challenges these hardworking individuals face. This includes advocating for:
    • Investment in early education, particularly in Title I schools.
    • Programs to bridge educational gaps before and during undergraduate education.
    • Holistic admissions processes that recognize potential beyond standardized test scores.
    • Support for law schools to improve bar preparation and student success, particularly for those serving minority populations.

The barriers minority students face are not due to a lack of capability but to a system that has consistently provided unequal opportunities from the start. Addressing these issues requires long-term investment and systemic reform beginning with early education. Only by doing so can we level the playing field and foster a truly inclusive legal profession.

Citing the DSM-5 in APA 7

Hello! This might be a silly question, but when I cite a paraphrase or a direct quote from the DSM-5, which I do multiple times throughout my paper, do I cite the APA (American psychiatric association), the authors (Jane doe et. al), or the DSM-5 (APA, 2013, pp. 13). My teacher likely won't respond because it's the weekend and my paper is due tomorrow.

Thanks!

Two job offers, very opposite roles.. conflicted on which route to go.

No matter which path I choose, I will be entering my first year as a teacher.

I currently have two job offers, and both principals are awaiting my decision.

The first option: A 6th-grade science teacher position at a Title I school. During the interview, the administration was very upfront about the challenges: significant behavioral issues and students struggling with reading and writing, lack of parental involvement, etc.

With my background in criminal justice and social work, I feel a natural pull toward this position. Like many new teachers, I have that bright-eyed, eager-to-make-a-difference mindset, though I recognize this can be somewhat idealistic.

The second option: A 3rd-grade teacher position at a National Showcase/Blue Ribbon school in a well-off district. The principal has set a very high bar, expecting a 90% success/pass rate for all classrooms. Parental involvement is also exceptionally high, matching the school’s rigorous standards.

I understand that no one can make this decision for me, but I’m seeking advice and guidance because I often struggle with making big decisions.

For what it’s worth, my own children attend the elementary school where I’ve been offered the 3rd-grade position. I’m not sure what added pressures or dynamics might come with being employed at the same school my children attend, and that’s something I’m also trying to consider.

Start date is January. I need to make a decision ASAP.

Could education be the solution to our problems? We undervalue the value of education in the U.S.

If students are the future of America, why are we not investing in them heavily? Education is a system that was established and added onto but seldom looked at from a macro level. The system is tricky and often allows for disparities between schools not only in different districts but sometimes the same. Could an investment in the education system of the U.S. drive another technological revolution?

I believe that greater investment in education will allow students to develop a greater curiosity, the strongest intrinsic motivator we have. Stronger motivation to learn post graduation would lead to an increase in advancement. Also, reallowing trade programs to flourish in public schools to catch any student who aren’t interested in research or education but want to have a career path that will show them the results of there work (i.e. A general contractor sees their project move along in steps and gives them dopamine when the project completes each step). How could this be accomplished? What hurdles need to be overcome to shift a societal view on public school?

Looking for Chromebook game recommendations - 13+, little reading, but interesting

Hello all,

I have a student who is frustrated that he cannot access video games before school. I am looking for games based on this information:

  • Chromebooks only
  • Immersive. Our students have long drives and they like to relax before classes begin.
  • Interesting
  • Not specifically academics-oriented
  • Little reading required (decoding is a struggle)
  • Free

I was thinking along the lines of Oregon Trail, where it's appropriate, interesting, and the older kids get really into it, but there's too much reading for this particular student. Any ideas?

A grading system to reduce stress and encourage career planning.

A student’s yearly average is capped at 80%, but they can score higher than 80% in individual subjects. At the end of the school year, if their average is above 80%, they get to choose which grades to lower until it meets the cap.

Do you think this grading system would reduce stress and encourage career planning?

Can I still he successful with a GED

Im a senior in high school and it is genuinely and completely miserable for me. Theres no particular reason, I dont get bullied I dont hate my teachers or my classes or anything like that. I’ve struggled with high school all four years. It simply is just awful to me. Genuinely and completely awful. Not just “Ugh I hate school” But to the point where it genuinely impacts my mental health. I recently moved states and went from an alternative school that allowed me to work full time to a normal high school. I just want to work and get my career started. I have a plan to go to the local community college and doing the Radiology tech program they offer after completing the Pre-reqs. Would getting a GED negatively impact my plan or my future? Pros and cons?

Educators at K-12 schools with academic admissions standards, what is it like?

What is your experience like at your school that accepts and rejects people based on academics? How attentive and respectful are students, how are they performing, and what are parents like?

I hear a lot of despair on this sub about teaching experiences in K-12 mostly public schools (kids with behavior problems, parenting issues, socioeconomic issues that can't be blamed on families but are still affecting them). How often are you seeing (or not seeing) those issues, and how do they compare?

Opinions on Sal Khan’s book “Brave New Words: How AI Will Revolutionize Education and Why That’s a Good Thing”?

Hey everyone,

I recently finished reading Brave New Words by Salman Khan, and it’s left me with a lot of thoughts about the future of AI in education. A little bit about me—I’m a product of public schools in Texas, and I later went on to become a middle school science teacher in a public school. Public education has always been close to my heart, and now I work in college admissions and future planning. I’m really passionate about making education accessible for all, especially at a time when public education has been under attack for so long.

While reading the book, I couldn’t help but think about the potential for AI to either widen the education gap or help bridge it. Salman Khan makes a compelling case for AI being a tool to increase equity, but I’m still a bit skeptical, especially given my own experiences in the classroom. We’ve seen technology get rolled out in public schools with little support or guidance, which leaves teachers struggling to keep up. I want to make sure AI doesn’t just become something the wealthy can afford and access but is available for all

I’d love to hear what others thought of the book or your general thoughts on AI and education. How do you think AI can be used effectively in public schools? Do you share the same concerns about access and equity, or are you more optimistic about the potential?

Improve my geography knowledge?

Hi all, I would really like to improve my geography knowledge. I gave up the study of geography at school in my second year of secondary school (around the age of 12-13) as this was my first opportunity to do so and my school had a weird policy where we had to choose between history and geography.. so now I'm almost 29 and my lack of knowledge is embarrassing. Are there schools that teach kids *how to think?*

As a new-ish mom, I’ve been thinking about education a lot. When I reflect on my personal education experience, the thing that bothers me the most was that I was never taught how to think. There was always a right or wrong answer, and that was it. It was a mentality I carried through university and even into my career. It even took another 10 years until I had a job that forced me to think critically for the first time ever. It was the most liberating and eye-opening experience ever. I can’t believe it took me 33 years to open my mind in that way. That’s probably a rant for another post, though. Anyway, I’m wondering if there are schools that teach kids how to think critically in this way. What would they be called? Do they have a certain philosophy?

Who got into teaching to pass on their passion for learning to young people but found the real job is hardly about that?

I think the incentives are completely wrong in education and it’s failing both students and teachers.

As the title suggests, I got into teaching because I was passionate about my subject area and wanted to help young people learn from my experiences and expertise. Yet in my time, I’ve found it’s mostly about being a carer to 25 kids at a time. I think this is a big reason why so many teachers feel emotionally burned out and ultimately leave the profession. So you end up with a lot of teachers who can’t teach but are good at handling the admin and behaviour management side of the job.

The system also fails students by increasingly prioritising a false interpretation of wellbeing over setting them up for success in the future. The intentions are there, but we’re doing it wrong. We’re there for their every need and all this does is perpetuate their learned helplessness. It’s a severely short-sighted approach and it sets students up for failure in the real world. Real wellbeing comes from the sense of pride and accomplishment we get when we overcoming challenges. Not by never feeling discomfort.

Anyway, I'd love it if you would have a read of my article and let me know what you think, whether you agree or not. Thanks everyone

PS: I'm Australian but from what I can tell, this is a universal issue... a western education system issue at least. Perhaps the education department overhaul will help, perhaps it'll make it worse, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Cheers.
