How not to go bankrupt and fill the house with useless books when doing academic research?

Some of us have the luck of living in a place with a good library system that has all or nearly all books one can ask for. I don't live in such a place. I call home a certain country in South America and here libraries are not at all resourceful. This makes me have to buy all the books I need, and since what I need are books in English, I'll have to buy from the internet before even reading, which will eventually make me spend a ton of money with books that aren't actually useful to me. Amazon's rent and return options aren't viable in my view, neither is selling the books I don't need as people around me would hardly be interested in buying and people abroad would pay far too expensive of a shipping to consider the purchase.
