Survival tips for early burnout

I am in my 6th year of teaching high school English and the burnout is strong. I’ve worked in 2 districts that have struggled significantly for VERY different reasons while I’ve been there (poverty, then politics and enrollment).

I plan to quit teaching after this year. I’ve thought from day 1 that the moment you stop loving teaching is the moment you should quit. Last year was so tough, and I thought this year would bounce me back because my students are SO smart this year. However, I’m still struggling just to get through the days. One of the biggest obstacles is my open classroom. I am constantly surrounded by noise and stimulation, and don’t have any type of office I can escape to for quiet. This makes grading essays nearly impossible for me, so my grading is piling up.

I have so much respect for the field; I don’t want to be one of those people that phones it in, but I am struggling so much to care about the extras teachers are expected to do (extracurricular club, accreditation committee, PLC, etc.) when I can barely even summon the energy to grade papers. Plus an AP class was sprung on me this year, so I’m doing miles of extra work for that, but it’s never enough.

Does anyone have words of wisdom? How do I make it through the rest of the year? We’re barely in quarter 2!!

[Serious] My GPA is Around a 4.1 but Im Failing a non-important Subject. Should I Care?

Hey I'm a Freshman and I currently take Honors Classes [Its the highest Course Type]. And Im currently doing well (A's A+s etc.) However, I have been failing a subject but its not really a *key subject*. It's been bothering and I have mood swings about it and I just get depressed overall about it. Like I currently have a C- On it (I take Regular/CP not Honors) and It affects my GPA but Robotics is like a subsubject. It's like Art/Gym and it isn't as *Important* as the other subjects. Should I care about it? Will it f*ck my life? Im really in a depressed mood and I need need

Thanks <3.

Getting nearly 4.0 GPA and at the same time having a part-time job

So I am planning to get a 4.0 GPA. I have top-grades in nearly all classes, except one, and that one is like a C or a D, and that messes up my entire GPA. I have planned a lot of time this semester to fix my grade in that class, but I have thought of getting a part-time job in a store, where I work after school. Will working interfere with my school work and grades? Can I maintain nearly 4.0 GPA? I am in the last year of what would be called secondary education...? (17/18 years old, is that what senior is?)

The Best and Worst Colleges for Sleep |

Top Ten Best Colleges for Sleep

Here it is — our list of stand-out colleges for sleep. Massachusetts is the big winner on this list, holding down eight of the top ten spots. Why? State obesity rates are relatively low, and many residents get regular aerobic exercise. Air pollution is moderate compared to many other states, and the body mass index of Massachusetts residents is one of the healthiest in the country.

Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts (Sleep Score: 7.73) Students at this picturesque “Little Ivy” in the suburbs of Boston get the best sleep of any on our list. Though they tend to hit the hay later than students at many other colleges, they manage to get 7.01 hours of sleep a night. Not the eight hours recommended by experts, but more than many of their peers. They also get almost the ideal amount of exercise and have a favorable average BMI compared to students at other schools, which contributes to their strong slumber numbers.

Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts (Sleep Score: 7.71) Harvard students snooze just down the road from Tufts, and actually beat their rivals by a few minutes of sleep a night. So why the lower sleep score? A tad less exercise may make their sleep less efficient, and their average BMI is a touch higher. They also get less sleep on weekends, bringing down their average overall. Still an impressive showing in a state filled with students who know how to sleep.

Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts (Sleep Score: 7.67) With a total sleep time of just under seven hours a night, Northeastern students grab third place on our list. They wake up earlier than students at the top two colleges, and go to sleep a good twenty minutes earlier, as well. Their average BMI is higher, so we knocked down their score a few notches for that. They also take fewer steps on the weekends, which may affect their sleep quality and general health.

Boston College, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts (Sleep Score: 7.63) With alumni like Doug Flutie and Amy Poehler, Boston College boasts an interesting and diverse student population. Their students come in second for sleep time, but their total sleep score brings them to number four on our list. Why? It all comes down to exercise. BC students take fewer steps on weekdays and weekends, which makes them more likely to suffer from inefficient or disrupted sleep.

Cambridge College, Cambridge, Massachusetts (Sleep Score: 7.59) Cambridge College, a private college for adult education, ranks number five on our list. A range of class schedules may be why its students get more shut-eye than any others on our list, even though many Cambridge College students work or have families. Their average sleep and wake time is among the earliest of all the students in our top ten, but they exercise significantly less. Though this may be due to busy work and school schedules, it does bring down the school’s overall sleep score.

University of Vermont, Burlington, Vermont (Sleep Score: 7.57) Heading north, our next school is located in one of the cleanest cities in the country, Burlington. UV students average some of the earliest sleep and wake times, giving them a total sleep time of 7.2 hours on weekdays. They don’t do quite as well as some of their neighbors to the south on exercise or BMI, though. which explains why they rank at number six.

California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California (Sleep Score: 7.57) Swinging out to the west coast, we find California Polytechnic State University, or Cal Poly for short. San Luis Obispo is one of the country’s cleanest cities, boosting Cal Poly’s score as a school for healthy sleepers. Less exercise on weekends and higher state obesity rates bring Cal Poly’s score to number seven.

Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts (Sleep Score: 7.55) BU’s 18,000 students log less total sleep time than those at Tufts and Harvard, snoozing just under seven hours a night. Freshmen are required to live on campus, which may make sleep challenging for some students. BU students take fewer steps overall and have a slightly higher BMI, but still sleep well enough to land in our top ten.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts (Sleep Score: 7.55) Judging by their average bedtime of 1:08 am (1:45 am on weekends!), the students at MIT are true night owls. They spend the least amount of time in bed of any students on our list, but still manage to sleep almost seven hours a night. Though they exercise about as much as students at other top schools, their late snooze time keeps MIT students from rising higher on our list.

University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Massachusetts (Sleep Score: 7.47) Located ninety miles from Boston in Western Massachusetts, the bucolic setting of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst seems designed for a good night’s sleep. So how do the school’s students stack up against others when it comes to slumber? They sleep a few minutes longer than students at MIT, but still average less than seven hours a night during the week. Exercise and BMI metrics are in the ballpark with other schools, but less sleep on weekends keeps UMass Amherst students squarely in the number ten spot.

Top Five Worst Colleges for Sleep

Let’s take the five worst colleges for sleep in reverse order. Remember — total sleep time is just one factor we take into consideration. Air quality, BMI, and other health-related metrics all contribute to our final ranking. Now, on to the bottom five.

Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas (Sleep Score: 3.24) Students at Texas Christian University may sleep about seven hours nightly, but they do it in one of the country’s most polluted cities. State obesity rates are also sky-high, increasing the chance that students here are grappling with asthma or sleep apnea. On the plus side, Texas Christian University students get a fair number of steps in every day and do a good job of sleeping in on weekends.

University of Mississippi, Oxford, Mississippi (Sleep Score: 3.21) The University of Mississippi  — or “Ole Miss” — is the state’s largest university. Students here rack up some respectable sleep time: 7.12 hours on weekdays and 7.55 on weekends. So, what accounts for their position in the bottom five? The state is number two in the nation for obesity. That, along with lower rates of regular exercise, puts the Ole Miss student body at higher risk of obesity-related sleep issues.

Rice University, Houston, Texas (Sleep Score: 3.16) Rice University gets high marks for academics, but low marks for sleep. Not only do Rice students sleep just 6.94 hours on weeknights, but their school is located in one of the most polluted cities in the US. Add in a high state obesity ranking and only moderate rates of exercise, and you’ve got the number three school on our bottom five list.

Mississippi State University, Starkville, Mississippi (Sleep Score: 3.07) Students at Mississippi State University sleep less than seven hours each night on average, but that’s not the only reason they’re at number two. They take fewer steps than students at many of our top-ranked colleges and live in a state where almost 40% of the population is obese. Both obesity and lower rates of exercise make it more likely that Mississippi State students  have trouble sleeping due to sleep disorders, poor fitness, or high BMI. This combination of factors puts MSU near the bottom of our list of sleep-friendly schools.

West Virginia University, Morgantown, West Virginia (Sleep Score: 3.07) Number one on our list of Top Five Worst Colleges for Sleep is West Virginia University. Though students here sleep around seven hours each night, they take several thousand fewer steps than students at many of the colleges on our list (just 6500 steps on weekends). Poor exercise habits combined with the nation’s highest rate of obesity puts West Virginia University students at high risk of obstructive sleep apnea and other obesity-related illnesses, such as diabetes. These conditions can negatively influence sleep and academic performance, both essential to well-being and success during the college years

We have been duped and dummed down

We live in an age where, finding out information is so easy; yet, the average person doesn't know the difference between:

Race, nationality and ethnicity

This is really sad and I'm not talking about young people; I'm talking about the average adult. What is all this colorblind bulls***? We all need to learn something about this SILLY CONCEPT. It's stupid and sweeping real racial issues underneath the rug.

Are we really going to sit here and say s*** like, "I don't see color". When we all know that we do and last I checked, our pupils don't take away the ability to see color.

Especially since, MOST PEOPLE, are treated based on how they look. Especially when it comes to skin color! Yes America, I'm talking to you; however, people here have such a hard time realizing that. It baffles me.

SOME PEOPLE CAN'T WALK AROUND ACTING "COLORBLIND", WHEN THEIR REMINDED OF THEIR SKIN COLOR EVERYWHERE THEY GO.

WITH ALL THE EDUCATED PEOPLE IN AMERICA; THIS ONE THING, THEY CANNOT GRASP.

STOP LYING TO YOURSELF PLEASE. LET'S ACKNOWLEDGE THAT WE CAN'T LIVE IN A COLORBLIND WORLD. THE POWERS THAT BE, WON'T LET US. TIME TO ACKNOWLEDGE WHAT'S PAINFUL BECAUSE IT HELPS YOU GROW AND LEARN. WHICH, I THOUGHT THAT'S WHAT EDUCATION IS ABOUT.

THERE'S SOME THINGS THAT BOOKS CANNOT TEACH YOU, THAT LIFE WILL. THAT IS THE HONEST TRUTH. AS MUCH MONEY PEOPLE SPEND ON EDUCATION.... 👇👇👇👇

ALL THE EDUCATION IN THE WORLD, CAN'T CURE THE COMMON SENSE THAT PEOPLE TRULY LACK.

P.S. Life is more than education. It is a set of experiences, as well. Education cannot (unfortunately) teach you everything. Book smarts and street smarts, are BOTH important to have.

P.S. ×2

We all know the education system (kindergarten to 12th) in america, is shot to hell. So, as a grown adult, what is the issue now? What is the excuse? You pay your phone bill, have internet and are able to do as much research as possible. Why isn't it happening?

I can't walk around in life ignorant. I refuse because being ignorant is.... Disgraceful.

Native Americans, not school boards, should decide use of Native American mascots, says Oneida Nation director

Mark Powless, the director of the South Eastern Oneida Tribal Services and one of the speakers the board invited to the meeting, said it is wrong that school boards across the nation are the ones deciding how Native Americans are represented through mascots. Native Americans, themselves, should be the ones to decide, he said.

. . . “As an indigenous person myself, being indigenous isn't about having an emblem on my shirt or having a mascot that I can relate to. It's about the culture that I carry with me every day… how I am represented as an indigenous person is a serious matter to me,” Powless said to the board.

New York Commissioner of Education Question

I’ll admit I’m not an educator my self although I’m looking to gain some information about the powers or authority that the NY or really any Commissioner of Education has. If there’s a better place to ask this I’d be happy to go there, but any information on the subject would be helpful.

I’ve found this so far although I can’t seem to find anything else.

Interested in resources for non-conformist teaching theory.

Hi, I am curious and requesting material as per the title but I should clarify; I am not requesting specific subject materials like Maths, English, etc. workbooks nor materials about educating someone so that they may produce work that adheres to any government-set standard of knowledge in subjects.

I realize the title makes me sound like a crack pot, but if anyone can point me in the right direction or provide me with trade words so that I may refine my search I would really appreciate!

Thanks :)

Is there a way to find out if I've ever been on academic probation?

Im not sure if this is the right sub to post but...

Im submitting trasfer applictions to 4 year universities and its asking me if ive ever been on academic probation...

I havent been to school in about 4 years since last year and I wasnt a very successful student.

I haven't been to school in about 4 years since last year and I wasn't a very successful student. I looked through all my emails and I couldn't find it. Im in good standing now as ive been getting straight A's since ive returned.

Is there some way to find out? I submitted some applications saying that I've never been on academic probation cause I wasn't sure. But I feel like I want to know now. Because I have this idea that they could find out and think I'm lying on my application and at the same time, i don't want to say that i was on academic probation when i acctually wasnt.

Does anyone know any sites or places I should look into where people of said-experience hang out? I'm thinking for forums similar to reddit or any other similar sites. So far we have postings on Indeed and will likely add Glassdoor/LinkedIn as additional platforms, but other than those platforms are there any I'm missing out on?

Concrete online universities/courses of economics?

So, I’m 17, I will have to wait 2 more years to finish school in order to be able to attend university but I’m terribly passionate about economics. I’ve attended a few university lessons in economics as a visitor and I absolutely loved them. I’ve been educating myself a lot online in the last year but most courses are missing a good teacher which can keep the whole course together and follow a straight and rational path as a university teacher would. That’s why I was wondering, is there any university course (Maybe something like MIT openware but not necessarily) which is about economics, finance, or anything related to these two subjects?

Please don’t suggest things like skillshare or udemy, I’m looking for something more concrete. I’ve made a few searches but haven’t found much. Thanks to everyone who will take the time to help or respond to me!

Useful infos: I’m 17, European, I can get permission from my parents and i will soon be 18, I can understand English perfectly.

A new study contradicts claims by the University of Oklahoma that minority students do not receive preferential admissions treatment.

A new study contradicts claims by the University of Oklahoma that minority students do not receive preferential admissions treatment.

Black and Native American students who were admitted to the university were less qualified than their peers from other ethnic groups, according to the study, which was released by the Center for Equal Opportunity in Virginia.

The findings were most striking for OU’s graduate programs. White students admitted to the law school had a median LSAT score of 159 and a median GPA of 3.60. In contrast, black students were admitted with a median LSAT score of 153 and a median GPA of 3.34. Native Americans scored better than blacks, but still demonstrably worse than white or Asian students.

According to the study: “OU Law rejected 2 American Indians, 9 Asian Americans, 1 African American, 8 Hispanics, and 105 whites despite higher test scores and grades compared to the median African American admittee.”

{snip}

“We looked at not only undergraduate but also medical school and law school admissions, and we found the same pattern at all three schools,” he said in an interview with The Daily Caller News Foundation. “Namely, preferential treatment for African American applicants, and to a lesser extent, preferential treatment for American Indian applicants.”

But the university has denied granting admissions based on race, and rejects the study’s findings. An OU spokesperson expressed disappointment with CEO’s methodology, in a statement.

“It is unfortunate that the university was not contacted or provided an opportunity to participate in the CEO study,” said Catherine Bishop, an OU spokesperson, in a statement. “Had the university been contacted, we might have been able to clarify items that seem to be misunderstood by those who prepared the report.”

Whether or not OU uses racial preferences is a timely question for Oklahoma voters, who will consider banning affirmative action at all public institutions when they go to the polls on Nov. 6. {snip}

People who dedicate their careers to studying certain periods of history (medieval European, Renaissance, etc), why?

I'm sorry in advance if this isn't the right sub, but I randomly thought of this question and I didn't know where else to post. But basically I'd like to know what one would expect on dedicating one's life to becoming an expert on a tiny point in our history. What is there to learn or understand that hasn't been already discovered by historians in the past? What do you look for when you "study" those periods of history? Besides being a professor or teacher, what careers can one do with a masters in say medieval history?

Cornell activist doesn’t get her way, so she calls the university ‘racist,’ makes demands

A now-former member of Cornell’s Alliance for Science fellowship is blasting the university as “racist” after being informed they would no longer be welcome in the program.

The Alliance for Science program is designed to “equip and empower emerging international leaders who are committed to advocating for science-based communications and access to scientific innovation in their home countries.”

Julia Feliz (who uses the plural pronouns “they” and “them”; we used “she” and “her” in the article title to avoid any grammatical confusion) wrote extensively about their predicament which began in early October, according to The Cornell Daily Sun.

Feliz accused a visiting professor from Iowa State of using “racist and sexist terminology” and of “[speaking] loudly and walk[ing] towards them to intimidate them” after they asked a question.

The professor “unequivocally” denies all the accusations.

But the heart of the matter is Feliz’s (alleged) monopolization of instructional time for social justice activism, according to the university and other students in the Alliance for Science program. Feliz claims Cornell accepted them (meaning, Feliz) “fully knowing that [they] were a scientist and social justice activist”; however, Cornell Senior Director of Media Relations and News John Carberry noted that Feliz “engaged in behavior that caused numerous and repeated complaints from other fellows over many weeks”:

It became clear that the educational experience of other fellows was being compromised due to ongoing interruptions of classroom lectures and discussions by Mx. Feliz. Cornell staff made many attempts to support and work with Mx. Feliz, including referrals to appropriate university offices to explore Mx. Feliz’s allegations of discrimination in the program; however, Mx. Feliz chose not to take advantage of independent university support programs, instead raising Mx. Feliz’s concerns within the classroom, leading to additional complaints from other fellows.

Feliz asserts that as a “Person of Color from the US living in Trump’s America, [they] couldn’t exactly divorce” the discussion topics from social justice.

Unsurprisingly, the Cornell Student Assembly passed a resolution on Thursday supporting Feliz; however, Alliance fellows in attendance at the meeting all spoke out against the measure (and Feliz).

Patience Koku from Nigeria said “the fellowship was an inappropriate forum for Feliz to make comments on social justice” while Rwanada’s Pacifique Nshimiyimana told the S.A. it “had only one side of the story here.”

Rose Mukonyo from Kenya told the S.A. that Feliz “was an activist in sessions” and that their “activism came out in every single session that we had.”

Feliz referred to these testimonies as “NeoColonialism in real time.” And, like many other college activists today, they issued numerous demands:

  1. Acknowledgement of wrongdoing and an apology from Cornell University
  2. The certificate for Science Communication that I was 3 weeks away from receiving
  3. Inclusion of fellows in Cornell’s system of due process recourse for unjust discipline, and a requirement for mandatory reporting by faculty of discriminatory behavior
  4. Sensitivity training for faculty addressing neurodivergence (and necessary education accommodations), gender identity, and Black/Brown/Indigenous cultures — each led by a member of the relevant community.
  5. Safe spaces on campus for marginalized students, fellows, and staff hosted by workers (that are not Cornell staff or HR) where these communities can find support and guidance without fear of retaliation

Saturday featured a protest in support of Feliz; the former Alliance fellow posted photos of the event on their Facebook page.

We're a team of mental health passionate people who are all recently out of college, and we're looking to get input from all types of stakeholders in education (we're designing the app specifically for college students) on the concept and the app. We're still in beta so would appreciate y'all signingup and giving us feedback!

If you're interested, please go to www.ensu.com and sign up! Feel free to message me if you have any questions :)

Political Stickers

What are your thoughts on teachers or school counselors having political stickers on their water bottle or other personal possessions?

I’m a school counselor I’m a very republican town and have gotten comments about the liberal stickers on my car and hydro flask. Just wondering others thoughts and opinions on it.

What are the different types of higher education?

I have a website which allows users to add their school and add information about it. I would like them to be able to add what type of school it is. Some examples include:

-CSU (California State University)

-UC (University of California)

-Private?

These are the only two systems I'm aware of in California. Do other states have their own systems (ie is there a 'UC' system in New York?)?. Any links to websites enumerating the different types of higher education institutions would be appreciated.

About my 15 year old daughter

I thought I started my girl out right, reading to her every night, sending her to preschool and pre-K at a private school and being very positive and involved but something just went very wrong.
Backstory I had originally wanted to homeschool her because of our poor school system so I sent her to kindergarten at the local public elementary school so she could get a solid baseline then I started homeschool at first grade. By the time we were half way through the year I new there was a problem when I could not get her to stay in one place for more than 5 mins. I know I’m not that imaginative but the curriculum was very specific so there wasn’t much room for straying off the schedule. and the dr agreed, diagnosing her with add. Unfortunately the meds didn’t set right with me making her into a sort of a zombie. I took her off and I thought I could just wing it without them, but by halfway through second grade I had to reenroll her into the public school. I just didn’t think I would ever finish the year and every lesson was a struggle of wills. I hated doing it but she seemed to be doing ok with second through fifth. It was middle school, when she began not wanting to go to school or do any homework. I would do everything to get her to do her work, but I couldn’t get her to read or do any homework and she barely eked her way through managing to pass sixth but failing 7th grade math. I got her tested and they said she had a math disability, but I think it is more than that. She refuses to do anything that a normal teen would be doing. This whole situation makes our home life very unhappy. I am constantly angry because she doesn’t want to do anything. I can’t get her to follow through with drs advice to exercise or take meds. I don’t know if she will graduate and I don’t know if she will ever even move out. I try taking her phone from her which is about the only leverage I have left in this fight for normalcy. But when I do that it ends up turning into a two day fiasco. I don’t know where I went wrong with her education and I certainly don’t know what I did to turn her into a blob. Thanks in advance for thoughts.

Do you agree with this list of things we should change? I definitely feel school in the US is not having the intended affect on students, especially when it comes to make them stressed and irritable due to sleep and workload.

Does anybody have any info about burnout/feeling unmotivated?

For years I've always been very driven in school. I've always tried to get straight A's and avoid trouble. But lately, something really weird has happened that is honestly scaring me a lot. After being stressed for so long, I now do not care whatsoever about my grades. I went from beating myself up over a B to being indifferent about the idea of failing a class. I'm worried that this kind of thinking will set me off track, because I'm just about to go into high school next year. Is this a common thing, or should I seek help when possible?

Some other important info:

- I am sick right now, so maybe this could be affecting my thinking?

- I have straight A's so far, so I was thinking that maybe I got desensitized to good grades or something?

- I had been doing a lot of work to prepare for a debate throughout the week, which could have resulted in burnout(?)

Sorry if this is the wrong subreddit for this question! I genuinely could not find any other place to post this that I thought would be helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Environmental Education

Hi there,

I'm a design student working on a project looking into how environmental issues (i.e. climate change, waste disposal, ecological breakdown, pollution etc) are taught in schools.

I'm interested in how environmental issues are taught at the moment, if teachers feel like it's present enough in the curriculum, if children have raised environmental concerns and how games/ toys/ physical teaching resources could be used to help educate and encourage positive change.

If anyone would like to/ has the time to share your thoughts it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you:)

School Sector and Satisfaction: Evidence from a Nationally Representative Sample

The Annenberg Institute at Brown University Working Paper

Abstract: Access to private schools and public charter schools might improve parent and student satisfaction through competitive pressures and improved matches between educators and students. Using a nationally representative sample of 13,436 students in the United States in 2016, the author finds that public charter schools and private schools outperform traditional public schools on six measures of parent and student satisfaction. Respondents with children in private schools also tend to report higher levels of satisfaction than respondents with children in public charter schools. The results are robust to various analytic techniques and specifications.

What are the most influential factors contributing to poor academic performance of a student?

I was interested in this question as I know it is one that is likely very well-researched.

In terms of age of concern, I would say I'm mostly directing this question for secondary school students and those at the collegiate/university level.

Are there any root factors that are commonly the cause? Or is there maybe a chain of factors that are collectively contributing notably? I know for these types of students, it's usually a never-ending list of contributing factors, but I thought I would ask here if a few are seen as universally common in being the most detrimentally influential.

In my experience, (although this is purely from being a teacher and not research), I would guess the most contributing factor is the lack of belief/foundation for education, which is mostly caused by absent/careless parents and bad peer groups. Although I could see others arguing the lack of resources is most influential.

Let me know your thoughts. I look forward to your response.

Getting a 504 for anxiety

I need advice for getting my daughter a 504 and I live in GA.

My story is a bit long, so I apologize. My ex just took over Primary custody of our 16 year old daughter from me. While living with me, school made her very anxious, she was tardy, absent a lot, then she just stopped going to school all together. I placed her in IOP.

My ex was suppose to start her in a 504, but during our custody battle in court (complicated won't go into detail), the GAL recommended he hold off on the 504 for 30 days to have the teachers get to know her and that's what he's doing.

Our daughter is on anti-anxiety medication, sees a therapist and a Psychiatrist. This man was only a weekend Dad, spent no time caring about her education or how she was doing before. But this is what he decided. I am so concerned, but is this typically normal for Districts to do with high anxiety truant kids?

Found an online Masters program for MS in Clinical Research

When I took the “careers” course during my undergrad, we were told to be very leery of online masters (specifically for psychology); I have done lots of research at the undergrad level and always thought I’d continue and be a counselor or even go all the way and get a PsyD. Now Im sure I’d rather do research. Any constructive and/or informed thoughts on this please?!

Undergrad: BS Psychology School of interest: Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Services Program: MS Clinical Research, entirely online Career goal: I already have a thesis concept that I hope presents a strong, researched argument on certain autoimmune diseases, but my long term goal is to be able to participate/conduct research specific to the impact of marijuana and the efficacy of treatment for various conditions.

With so many schools making fully online degrees possible, it’s not just Phoenix-type-schools and those degrees available anymore.

Free Online University?

A while ago, maybe a year, I saw a story on the news about a boy who had completed a degree online. I was wondering if anyone knows how.

I was just having a conversation with a friend when they mentioned the open university. After coming back home, I remembered hearing about a young boy, about 14, who had completed a masters in something computery (I have no clue what sort of thing it was, I'm less technologically able than my grandma).

From memory, the course was free, which also makes sense, as it would likely be quite difficult for a 14 year old to take out a student loan, and based off of the footage on the news story it didn't look like his family had lots of money to spend on such a thing.

Does anybody happen to know what site/resource he used to get his degree from, or if there are others that match the criteria of free and online?

PS. I'm planning on taking an online degree myself, as now is probably the last chance I'll get before GCSEs and A levels with their coursework and revision.

College

So I want to go to college. I'm 20 and graduated high school in 2017, I took a year break but it ended being 2 years since no one would hire me. I'm working now but I recently opened my eyes for the first time in a while. I really should further my education to achieve my dream.

So I'm looking at scholarships and grants almost every day. Is it too late to think about looking at those? Because of how long I've been out of education already.

Before anyone asks I want a career of becoming a teacher.

Burnout

Hi, I'm a homeschooled student and I've been dealing with a burnout. I don't feel motivated to finish U.S History anymore. It bores me a lot, and it consists of a lot of reading. I feel like taking a 4-day vacation but I feel that would ruin my education even more. My parents didn't really care too much about my education, so I didn't care too much in the beginning. Now I'm going to be 16 on Friday and I just look back and remember how I didn't do anything for my education. I really regret it, but I want to make a change. I just feel like I keep failing, and I don't know what to do. I feel so stupid. Should I really take this vacation? I haven't been sleeping that well and I just feel as if I need to find better ways of doing things I need to do. Thank you.

Is there a need to update the curriculum in a region or nation every now and again? Because, when I read the changes they propose it's always boils to the same things. These are things like: teaching 21st century skills and update the education to be 21st century proof. I also think the new ideas and goals are vague and not useful. So that's why I ask this question.

Messed around in HS... now what?

Hi.

I have a dilemma on my hands, the worst part about it... self-induced.

_____________

Backstory SHORT:

I hated school as a teen so I didn't learn anything at all, I messed around and ended up ditching high school altogether (graduated witha "homeschool" program).... Now, 5-6 years later I want to go to college to pursue a dream job. I don't even know HS Algebra avery well... How do I "catch up" or learn what I should have in High School so I can survive college and not be lost. I am okay trying to learn my self with online resources and the help of friends and family... but where do I even start... I am particularly talking about math. Last I remember learning is solving simple equations in Algebra. I know it's all my fault... but looking past that, how do I fix it? Or catch up.

Thanks.

________________________

Backstory LONG

: I hated school growing up. I absolutely hated it. Elementary school was torture, when I got to middle school it was difficult to focus, I was constantly distracted with my friends, phone or anything really besides school. When I got to high school ... well I mostly took it as a joke, I thought I had the worst math teacher ever, I thought she was just trying to make me miserable and fail me, In my head, I had outlined a career path that didn't require (At least I thought so) any "algebra" or "geometry" so I really didn't care what grades I was making or whether I was learning anything at all... Notice I only mentioned math, all of my other subjects I was doing fine in, as a matter of fact I didn't care about them either but they naturally just seemed simple to me, I was in all AP classes, somehow I had ended up in AP Algebra too ... Also, important to note I went to a school in a very rural area so the majority of my peers were also choosing the trade/ no education required approach. Something clicked at the end of my freshman year, I started to enjoy learning, particularly difficult topics, I started looking forward to my Algebra classes and learning... Well, right about this time I got into some trouble. Wrong crowd type of stuff., this led to me choosing to be homeschooled. I was 15 or 16 at this time, I was home alone, I sure as heck was not going to force my self to do my homeschool... It was a joke anyways. As soon as I got my driving permit I ditched the homeschool and got a job as a cashier, it was easy money and a great schedule for a 16-year-old who wasn't obligated to be at any school. As I got older I realized I need to start pursuing a more sustainable career... I went through all sorts of trade jobs and enjoyed many of them... construction, welding, landscaping, window and door installer. After a couple of winters working out in the elements and screwing up my back, I realized I did not want a manual labor job and preferred to work with my "brain". I landed a great entry-level job in an office setting, I grew quite a bit, I enjoyed it more than manual work... However, the companies business was not in the industry I wanted to be in... I left there and after being self-employed for a little bit and then landed my current job... Working in the HQ of a great company, corporate environment, making decent money, significant company ($3B dollar company, 7k employees) ... many people would consider this a dream job, and I am very blessed to be here. I have not education practically, all of my colleagues have degrees... yet here I am. One problem... I'm bored. I have an idea of what I do, however, it requires a degree... College sounds like a great idea, opens the door to some of my dream jobs, except I'm terrified to go... Simply because I ditched high school, didn't even try to learn anything, don't remember much of anything- especially math. How in the world would I even survive my first semester working through prerequisites...

Hi everyone, I am in need of help figuring out the best way to teach a family member of mine who is illiterate. She is in grade school and still does not know how to read or write in English. I have tutored elementary and middle school students in the past but not to this level. What would be the best strategy to make sure that we are making the time spent in tutoring the most effective? I am thinking about getting her a library card and getting books every week. I’m starting from ground zero since she does not know how to read at all.

Going back to school to study biology and need advice

I’m 25 and I want to go back to school and study biology. I started school when I was 18, but found out my ex was pregnant about 2 weeks after school. Long story short she had a new boyfriend, moved out of state and was alienating me. I dropped out of school and got a job traveling doing construction making decent money to afford a lawyer. Met my son when he was 8 months old while I was driving through her town to get to my next job site. Swabbed his mouth and got dna test back and he was mine. December of 2015 I got my rights to my son and judge told me to take him home for Christmas. Fast forward to now, I’m tired of working dead end jobs for close to minimum wage. My ex is 25 and has been divorced once, married twice and has 3 kids now, all with different guys. I have myself. Never has a stable home, constantly moving. My son is basically always with his grandma. I want to try to eventually get physical custody of him. I do work, my schedule is Tuesday through Saturday 4am-8am and 4pm-8pm. I can switch to part time and just do the morning hours. Okay, now that you know what’s going on in my life, I need help figuring out how I should go about getting my education? I have a passion for science and have wanted to become a biologist since I can remember or something along those lines. I also love chemistry and was very good at it. How do I go about getting the education? Should I do online for two years? Should I just enroll in a community college and make the commute? What are good online schools? Maybe other jobs in that field if you know of any. I’m in the United States btw if that matters. Any and all advice will be very appreciated.

Looking for advice (for a newbie)

Hi Teachers,

I’m looking to get into teaching and looking for some advice here, more so how to go about doing it right than anything else.

  • About me: 33M, taught English in Korea for ~5 years, then ran a restaurant, realized my true passion was to impart knowledge to kids after all. My favorite experience was teaching high school kids.

Here’s what the research has shown me so far, please correct me if I’m wrong on any of this:

  • There’s a teacher shortage pretty much everywhere (good for getting in!) but it’s not always for good reasons (low pay, poorly run, overcrowded, stressful, etc).
  • Each school district is unique in how they’re run and what they need. How can I figure out where to look and what they need? This seems like one of those situations where you need to already be on the inside to know the "culture" of the school/district, what admin is like, etc. Is there another way to figure this out?
  • You can get a provisional teaching license in many states and work towards getting your full license. Wondering if this means you can get inside a classroom straight away aka hit the ground running?
  • There are some states that I’ve been told (almost unanimously) to avoid. Oklahoma, Arizona, Hawaii, NC, and a few others. I wonder what you all thought about this. I personally think those are exactly the states I should head to in order to start my career since that’s where the opportunities would be? But I’ll admit that I don’t know what I don’t know.
  • I was a good student (perfect SATI and II scores, various APs) so I actually don’t have any strong preference for which subjects to teach since I can teach a lot of them. Would it help me to choose a subject that’s in high-demand/high-shortage? I’m seeing Math/Science/STEM/SPED/Foreign Languages come up the most.

My plan is to narrow down a list of places with shortages and reach out to the schools there. But I feel like I'm approaching this as if it’s the private sector and I’ve heard it’s not the same at all. Am I doing this right? Thanks for any and all help.

Talking about death with students

Hello teachers of Reddit,

First of all I'd like to say I'm not a teacher, but an Illustrator. I'm working with a colleague on a concept for a learning game, in which we explore multiple ways parents talk about death with their children. In our research, we noticed a lot of people preferred telling the truth, but there's also a lot of people who tell their children lies to cover up a death of a pet or in the family. Especially with young children.

Examples include: "Grandpa is just sleeping." "The bunny went to live with his friends." and "The cat opened a campingsite far away."

We get death is a tricky subject, especially with young children. But me and my colleague both stand by trying to explain the truth as well, although we both do not have children.

I was wondering what you guys think as teachers and if you ever had to explain to one of your students about death. I'm especially interested if it concerns young children, because from a certain age (12 or so?) they always seem to know about it.

Thanks in advance for any replies and have a great day teaching!

Some help on how to study/learn

hey anons, i'm in the 12th grade and so far all m grades have been dogshit. i'm probably never gonna get into a university at this rate. even math, which is the one subject i excelled at, is the same dogshit as the others once calculus came around.

I have a hard time learning the information and applying it in different ways when it comes to a test. If i learn how to calculate a reaction one way, i can't answer questions on why or on another way. i cant apply the knowledge in a way that hasn't been shown to me, basically i cant come up with new ways to adapt the knowledge.

so i'm turning to you guys. how do you guys do the stuff mentioned above? how do you study? and how do you truly understand something?

any answer to anything would be much appreciated. thanks in advance guys

School is too easy for me, what do I do?

I went to a private school in middle school with tons of academic pressure and I was getting all D’s and F’s because of the stress and pressure. Now, I have all A’s and B’s and I feel as if my high school is way too easy. I read question on quora but the answer I feel the answer was somewhat appropriate saying “you can’t say it’s too easy it you don’t have all A’s.” I then replied in my head saying that I got bored from how easy it was so I couldn’t focus much and it must’ve read my mind because it said “The majority of people who say that high school is too easy for them follow with that sentences with “I get bored easily so I’m only a B student” seriously? How am I supposed to focus on something that I feel is for elementary schoolers? I feel like I’m going to be set up for failure when I am not challenged and am using my least effort. What can I do without some awful answer like the Quora answer?

How to address problems at a K-8 school

Hello everyone.

I am a parent in a unified school district. Most elementary schools ate K-5, but several are K-8 schools. Our school has recently become K-8 and there are problems with the implementation. Among other things, there are behavior issues, staffing shortages, and design issues that parents believe are resulting from lack of district support for the school site.

A group of about 40 parents have made our concerns known, and our expectations clear with the assistant superintendent of education at the district office. We have a meeting scheduled for later this week.

My question is: What is the process to create positive change with the program? We are not talking to the DO to complain, we want to make the program better.

I understand we can go to the superintendent, and the board, but is there a usual course of action that is taken? Are all of these steps done at once? If you have been in a situation like this, what have you done to create positive change at your school?

On behalf of 40 other parents, we appreciate any input you can provide.

Graduate School: Being thorough vs working smarter?

This is my first semester online in graduate school all while working full time. I've been giving true studying a good shot (reading every article and doing all of the assignments. So far haven't had any issues keeping up good grades, but getting totally burnt out. I know I can keep my grades up by doing less work and working "smarter", but I feel like I would be selling myself short by not actually learning some of the material. Being surrounded by other professionals in the field, I am wondering are others going through the same thing and in if it's normal to do what you can or am I alone?

Learning Social Sciences Post College Graduation

I am curious how one can continue the expansion of one's knowledge, particularly in the social sciences where the classical readings are very dense and require more than a simple reading of the works, after one graduates from college, at which point much of the structure of education is lost.

Would people here recommend finding book clubs? I think of myself as a rather nerdy individual, and doubt I could find someone to discuss Durkheim's works on social solidarity in depth with. I like to think that the internet has a vast array of resources, but at the same time it is highly disorganized and not necessarily vetted well.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Speech Arts Teacher Denying Admission to Part of the School Population

In a California middle school, a speech arts teacher at school that had the improv team. About three times a year, the team put on a performance for the whole school. On one of the performances, she didn’t allow a subset of the 8th grade population. It was the UC Davis team which had all the special ed students as well as mainstream students in it. I am guessing she discriminated on the basis of disabled kids. But she probably thought it was a legal loophole by not allowing the whole team from seeing the performance. Even if she didn’t discriminate on the basis of disability, not allowing part of the school population from seeing a school performance sounds illegal because they should be open to ALL the students since her production is funded by taxpayers-she was a school employee and using school property to execute the rehearsals and performances. If she had her own production outside of school funded by her own money, then she can deny admission to whoever she wants, but it’s wrong doing that on a production funded by taxpayers. Legally, she didn’t even own any of the productions that she created at school because she was an employee of the school district and since it was created within the scope of her employment, the school district owns the rights to the production aka work-for-hire. Anyways, am I correct on how it’s illegal to not allow part of the school population to see her production? All students attending a public school should have equal access to all services.

Term for Pressuring the Removal of a Student

Hi, I'm looking into a topic on the legality and ideas around when a student is pressured to leave or be removed from a school. Either due to their race, their personality, their grades, whatever.

Is there a topic/title for this issue? For when the school administration or school's community pushes for a student's (likely unjust) removal from a school system? I'm just trying to find something that will be easier to search for title-wise.

I need help regarding university

Hi there, currently I’m UK and I’m doing a Level 3 btec extended diploma (90 credit). I plan on applying for universities over the next month however I have a few questions regarding university as a whole that might seem rather stupid.

1) the main course I “plan” on applying for architecture (bachelor in arts) that is supposed to last 3 years. If I successfully complete the 3 years do I just receive my degree or is there more?

2) with university I’m bound to take on debt, I’ve heard lots of things regarding it like “you only pay it back if you make so much per year” and “you don’t have to pay the debt back after 20 years” I’m unsure on what’s true regarding the debt of uni.

3) by full time course does it mean Monday to Friday?

I’m sorry about these stupid questions, I’m finding this whole process really hard and I didn’t expect it to be this difficult to apply and decide what I will be doing with my life.

Does constantly learning help you learn faster?

I really hope this isn't spam or been asked before, I've struggled to word this question in searches which is why I came here to see if anyone could give me an answer or direct me to somewhere I could find one.

I have always had a curiosity in multiple fields and I'm currently doing an undergrad course in Philosophy, Economics, Sociology and Political Science. My course is quite broad in nature, particularly for Ireland, but I'm curious about other fields too - most notably psychology, history, mathematics, computer science and chemistry which I want to learn more about and has brought me here.

Basically my question is does learning one thing - say chemistry and atomic theory - benefit my capacity to learn in other fields? Does the processing of unrelated information help generally in assessing new information. Or could it have a negative effect where I am trying to learn too much and my memory and brain get worn out and confused?

Although I really do loving to learn all kinds of new information, I want to do it in a way that is both sustainable and structured and doesn't hinder - and hopefully benefits - my degree and would appreciate any and all advice.

University has been scamming my department

Background; I'm a mechanical engineering international student in my final year in the UK. I pay 19K GBP in tuition alone. I'm one of the people in my year who has my shit together.

On the 30th they are having an open forum for students to voice their problems. I have been trying to change things for 2 years now. I'm done. I'm going to go their and take the piss out of them

My course has been shit since day 1. They constantly are disorganized. They have a woman who should be in retirement in charge of the organization of all the lectures and course structure. She's a nice woman but she can barely type 30wpm and her desk is knee high in papers. All the lecturers read from slides, they don't want to be there, the students don't want to be there, nothing of value is added in these lectures. The labs during year 1 and 2 were good, that was the only high point.

The course has no module selection options. I want to do robotics but I'm forced to do an INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE module. Where the prof tries to convince us ICE won't die out.

It's the 16th of October and somewhere around 30 - 40 students haven't been assigned a thesis/professor supervisor. They expect a 10 page project proposal and methodology with literature review by the 30th. Last year it was 2 pages. 70% of my course voiced up in a vote for an extension. Denied because "you can do it in 2 weeks" on top of a 9 - 6, 3 days of a week while learning 2 computer simulation software.

The mechatronics Arduino kits aren't enough for everyone, have to stay in the lab, and cost 60quid each. They couldn't even do a student count before the year started to make sure everyone had enough. Now first year product design students get a 70quid worth of kit TO KEEP. They can't even invest in us a little kit for us to actually learn with in our own space and time.

The new Head of Department is this old crone of woman. I was in my CFD labs, waiting for a sim to load, so I played a game of clash Royale on my phone. She comes in, not apart of the lab, and tries to rip the phone out of my hands then makes comments about how I'm going to be one of the ones asking for an extension. Completely disrespectful and unprofessional.

Those are a few of the current problems in my year alone.

I've talked with students from the same course in different universities in the UK. Ive looked at the structure in the US. They are scamming my fellow students out of an education that will prepare us to be real career working engineers. If there isn't module selection because variation is cost then the modules they offer should be of acceptable quality.

This university claims itself as an engineering university. I'm going to go and argue they are pocketing more than 70% of our tuitions. This is a mostly international uni, so they are making A LOT in tuition fees. I want them to open up their financial records. They need to be held accountable for their actions.

Thoughts? Disagreements? I need to be prepared to counter argue.

Admin forced me to lie.

Backstory: There is a kid named Jack who has a mental condition where he need a teacher(aid) with him all the time. Actual Story: I was in class doing work and Jack comes up way to close to my face, me being surprised, responded with, " Get outta my face." The aid told me to be a little nicer next time him. I said okay and sorry. For some reason she thinks as she walked away from me (with her back turned) she heard me say the B-word to her. I later get called up to the office for doing this, I tell the VP that I did and would not do such a thing. They didn't believe me because, "An adult never lies." I was livid because I didn't do this so she sends me back. Later on I get called up to the Principal's office. I go, I sit, and I talk. They don't believe me because they have evidence, fine but I had many people in the area, in class, who had better evidence and none of them got called up to explain their story. So she asked me one last time if I was lying and me being tired already(on a friday!!) said yes. The principal made me write on a piece of paper what happened and I had to go and apologize to whoever was involved. I did this andI have detention for 1 day and I have to write an apology letter to Jack. This is my story of how the American educational system is broken, this is also technically a direct violation of the Habeas Corpus. If you have any advice, please give it to me, it will be greatly appreciated.

[Tech] Looking for a more industrial Presentation Remote Clicker

I hope this is the right place to ask (if not, please direct me where would be best).

We have about 50 or so classrooms, all with technology. The main issue we run into is we're always replacing the Presentation Remote Clicker in the room (power point is a mainstay for teaching). Either the receivers get taken (mistaken for usb storage drives) or the units itself get pocketed and forgotten about, and the instructors dont know what room they came from.

Unfortunately, the "clickers" we are using have two major flaws for more widespread use.

  1. They use AAA batteries which we are constantly replacing.
  2. The Receiver and Unit are tied to each other, so we cannot re-program a new receiver with an older unit (if one part goes missing, we have to replace the entire thing)

Is their such a Presentation Remote Clicker that is more suited for classroom use, to be used by multiple people, left in the room, rather than the individual "conference room" use ones that are generally available?

Preferably looking for one that features.

  • Rechargeable base station (that can be attached to a desk)
  • 50-60ft range
  • A unifying type receiver (that we can resync a clicker to a different receiver)
  • Durable enough to handle being used by multiple people 5 days a week.
  • Easy to use (for the instructor)

Any help would be appreciated.

Because the owners, the owners of this country don't want that. I'm talking about the real owners now, the BIG owners! The Wealthy… the REAL owners! The big wealthy business interests that control things and make all the important decisions.

Forget the politicians. They are irrelevant. The politicians are put there to give you the idea that you have freedom of choice. You don't. You have no choice! You have OWNERS! They OWN YOU. They own everything. They own all the important land. They own and control the corporations. They’ve long since bought, and paid for the Senate, the Congress, the state houses, the city halls, they got the judges in their back pockets and they own all the big media companies, so they control just about all of the news and information you get to hear. They got you by the balls.

They spend billions of dollars every year lobbying, lobbying, to get what they want. Well, we know what they want. They want more for themselves and less for everybody else, but I'll tell you what they don’t want:

They don’t want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don’t want well informed, well educated people capable of critical thinking. They’re not interested in that. That doesn’t help them. Thats against their interests.

Thats right. They don’t want people who are smart enough to sit around a kitchen table and think about how badly they’re getting fucked by a system that threw them overboard 30 fucking years ago. They don’t want that!

You know what they want? They want obedient workers. Obedient workers, people who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork. And just dumb enough to passively accept all these increasingly shitty jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, the reduced benefits, the end of overtime and vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it, and now they’re coming for your Social Security money. They want your retirement money. They want it back so they can give it to their criminal friends on Wall Street, and you know something? They’ll get it. They’ll get it all from you sooner or later cause they own this fucking place! It's a big club, and you ain’t in it! You, and I, are not in the big club.

By the way, it's the same big club they use to beat you over the head with all day long when they tell you what to believe. All day long beating you over the head with their media telling you what to believe, what to think and what to buy. The table has tilted folks. The game is rigged and nobody seems to notice. Nobody seems to care! Good honest hard-working people; white collar, blue collar it doesn’t matter what color shirt you have on. Good honest hard-working people continue, these are people of modest means, continue to elect these rich cock suckers who don’t give a fuck about you….they don’t give a fuck about you… they don’t give a FUCK about you.

They don’t care about you at all… at all… AT ALL. And nobody seems to notice. Nobody seems to care. Thats what the owners count on. The fact that Americans will probably remain willfully ignorant of the big red, white and blue dick thats being jammed up their assholes everyday, because the owners of this country know the truth.

It's called the American Dream, because you have to be asleep to believe it.

American education is failing American students

A recent poll found that significant numbers of Americans, including a great many who had received a college degree or were in the process of obtaining one, simply don’t know much about American history. That poll revealed, variously, that about 85 percent of Americans weren’t aware that James Madison was the architect of the United States Constitution; that barely 10 percent of Americans know the 13th Amendment abolished slavery in the United States; that not even half of Americans can name the current Supreme Court justice; and that barely a third know that it is Congress’s prerogative to declare war.

But they can name ALL the Kardashians!

Doubtlessly this short survey barely scratches the surface. These are easy questions, the sort of thing you learn about in the first week of any basic American civics course. It is hard to imagine most Americans knowing anything at all substantive about our country’s history, people, institutions and traditions. If you think, as the respondents did, that the Emancipation Proclamation “freed all the slaves in the United States,” you’re getting a garbage education about the history of America.

The challenge is identifying the level of education at which this deficiency is occurring. Is it elementary school? Middle? High? One rather suspects it is all three, and that higher education bears a good bit of the blame as well. We should be teaching our students the basics of their country at every level of education. It need not be ideological or jingoistic; Americans are more than capable of making up their own minds on how they feel about our complex and difficult and inspiring historical record. But to short-change a generation of young people, graduating them with a bankrupt and garbage knowledge set about their own country, is not at all an appropriate solution.
