There is such thing as good stress.
Okay now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for accountability to deadlines and setting goals and achieving them in an appropriate amount of time. I just don’t personally see the need for teaching children that the negative emotion they feel, stress, is good because it makes you finish your work on time. To me, that feels like a very toxically capitalist sentiment: your value comes from your productivity, and if your stress increases your productivity, that stress is good.
Why not teach students that your mental health is always your priority? If you’re experiencing stress related to schoolwork or your “productivity”, that isn’t “good for you”. Like I said, you should be incentivized to meet deadlines and be productive and whatnot. But I don’t believe stress has to play a role in that. I’m currently an extremely busy fourth year physics major, and I meet all of my deadlines save for extenuating circumstances, but I don’t experience what I would call “stress” about finishing my assignments. I am motivated simply by the desire to be successful and hold myself accountable to deadlines. Why not teach all students to exist that way?
Thoughts? All opinions welcome!
