I was just told that I (male) could not work because they "Cannot have only 2 males supervise children"

I apologize if this is not the right place to post this.

Context: I pick up random shifts at a non profit art center in California (in addition to my day job at the public middle school), which I have done for the last 4 years. I was scheduled to work a "teen night” on April 1st, but was just told that I won't be able to because the other instructor is male and they won't allow 2 males to supervise the children without any adult females present. 2 female instructors is not a problem, however.

To me this feels like gender discrimination. I have worked in education for a decade and take my role as a positive, healthy male role model seriously. They have my fingerprints, TB test, and up to date personal info on file.

Any thoughts?
