In Australia there is increasing promotion and recognition of VET learning over degrees. Will switching to a diploma be a good idea?

I have done one year of my degree and have deferred. In the business field, I feel that a degree takes too long for what I want to accomplish which is to start work in a company with some specialised knowledge (AQF5), gain experience and then go into business myself. I have attached an article that discusses the advantages of using a diploma over a degree and was wondering if many of you think this could be a good idea. There's also the possibility to use a diploma to get credit off a degree for later.
