How exactly do private High schools prepare students better so their acceptance in high rank universities is higher?

I’m trying to disentangle the specific role a private high school has on university acceptance. Are the students better prepared in STEM (compared to public) and therefore kids perform better in SATs? Do people at private HS have better connections?
