Applying to the US universities

Do all US universities provide unconditional offer letters based on predicted grades? If so, then is it necessary to submit final grades later? What happens if there's a significant gap between the predicted and final grades? Additionally, can I apply to US universities now using my predicted grades?

Can a law make social media less 'addictive'?

NY Targets Social Media with Laws for Kids' Mental Health (article link)

  • Aims to make feeds less "addictive" & restrict notifications.
  • Experts question effectiveness & science linking social media to mental health problems.

Question for Educators: Have you seen a rise in social media's negative impact on students' mental health? What (if anything) do you think schools can do to help?

What would happen to education across the country if they take down the board of education due to the recent ruling taking down chevron?

*department of education

It’s no secret that they want education to be privatized or non existent, but realistically what would happen to education in the next 5 years due to this ruling? Will our youth see any change in this? Or is this something that will take longer to start seeing the effects of the recent ruling?

Research

Based on your experience, do you believe there's a good number of companies in Europe that'd be willing to develop industry/work-related English skills for their employees as they're branching out instead of hiring new multilingual candidates?

Mainly as part of the perk/development system that is being implemented in bigger companies.

Thank you.

How do I get word out about my architecture classes to teachers?

I am an architect, now retired, and have been teaching introductory classes to students between the ages of 8 and 16 years for over 20 years. What began with me going into my daughter's third grade classroom and talking about what architects do, grew into a program that is now mostly online. My students live in several different countries around the world because design and architecture have no barriers.

My question is, how do I get the word out to teachers about what I do and what I offer? The classes are individual, group and I have co-taught with high school teachers who have classes in history and math and worked with students on their final projects.

I just don't know how to reach teachers and let them know of an additional resource for their students.

Any thoughts or ideas will be greatly appreciated.

As a regular secondary school graduate from Uzbekistan, how can I increase my nonexistent chances to studying at a university abroad for bachelor's degree? (the UK, US, etc.)

With what I've already understood, the school diploma received after graduation in Uzbekistan is not valid for most EU universities. WHAT CAN I DO?

Not mentioning the IELTS, SAT, etc. , which all seem to be of no use

Is homework beneficial for primary school children?

There’s an ongoing debate about whether young children should have homework. On one hand, some argue that homework helps reinforce what kids learn in school, giving them extra practice to solidify their understanding. It’s thought to help develop crucial skills like responsibility and time management, which are undeniably valuable in the long run.

However, I can’t help but wonder about the downsides. There’s evidence suggesting that too much homework can lead to stress and burnout, especially for younger children who need ample time to play and relax. When I think back to my own childhood, most of our evenings were spent playing outside or engaging in creative activities, not worrying about assignments. This free time is essential for development and can often be overlooked.

Moreover, I’ve read that homework can sometimes infringe on valuable family time. Evenings are a crucial period for families to reconnect after a busy day, and homework can disrupt this. I’ve seen some research, like the work by Harris Cooper, suggesting that homework doesn’t significantly boost academic performance for younger kids. This makes me question whether the potential stress and loss of family time are worth it.

What's your opinion on this?

How bad is it to hop jobs every few years in the field of education?

I'm 34 years old and currently working in higher education as the lead coordinator for a large-scale local educational conference. I was looking at my resume and noticed that I have only had prior positions that were between a year and three years long at most (I started as a teacher for a few years after I graduated undergrad, then stopped to focus on a graduate degree, then was a Grad Assistant for a year while in school, then took a year and a half break due to COVID and family health, then worked in student housing for another few years, and now I am about a year into my current position. The main reason for my job-hops has been due to offers of higher salary and advancement opportunities but I know in certain other fields, employers would look at these job hops and breaks as big red flags. I'm wondering what the general impression is when it comes to education, specifically higher education, and what I can do to help myself (other than just get more years in at my current job) to address any overall negative impressions.

Need to Interview a Teacher

Need to Interview a Teacher

I’m a college student and a requirement for our observations is giving our observation teacher some questions to answer. Unfortunately, they never got back to me before the school year ended and now I just need any teacher to answer these, I would greatly appreciate it

What types of assessments do you use?

How do you adapt a lesson when you encounter technology problems on the day of the lesson?

If students do poorly on an end of unit assessment, would you continue to move forward to the next unit or would you step back to review the unit?

How do you accommodate for students with IEPs and different needs for assessments?

How do you know how to weigh assignments? (ex. how do you decide if homework is 10% or 15% of a grade).

ATTENTION ALL SCHOOL CAPTAINS (and others who care about the student body)

I'm a school captain from Australia who is kinda falling behind in the whole school captain thing because of some stupid personal stuff that is effecting my output. Long story short, I'm homeless and depressed, and because of that I cant do what a school captain is supposed to.

I come to reddit seeking guidance. I want some advice on how to be a good captain. I want some help meeting these high standards that I should have considered when entering my role. And most importantly, I need advice on coping with the stress of school on top of a 5 day work week as well as case workers being on my back about my situation.

Before you guys rush to help (or not), just know that this is just me procrastinating from things I actually need to do. I have a problem, one that I'm aware is there but (key word) choose not to resolve. Its hurts, but i feel like i cant really do much. And anything I can do to either better my life or meet expectations just feels like it cost too much energy, so I don't do it. I really don't want to sit around and do nothing all day, but I can be bothered to do better because it "hurts to move" or "sucks to wake up".

Sorry, this is starting to feel less educational and more personal, but its on the topic of school captaincy.

so please, have some sympathy.

-Thank you

How should I express romantic interest in my former professor?

I have a former professor that I have a bit of a crush on. We were able to develop some form of a connection based on a purely academic relationship. We are connected on LinkedIn, but other than that, I don’t have any other way to contact him.

I know this is such a weird question, but I’d like to express my interest in a way that is not creepy, but will also make it clear that I’m interested in possibly exploring more. I am 26F for reference and he was my grad professor.

Feasibility of teaching high school students to work, save, buy land, and build home?

High schools already have Career & Technical Education with Architecture & Construction and some high schools have students building tiny homes. How about full scale teaching students to work more in summer and after school to save enough money to buy land individually or as group, and build homes on their own land. They would be OK starting smaller homes comparable to what to expect in college housing. Would this make going to school more interesting and help with the housing affordability problem, and possibly avoid student loans? We will also need to organize people to develop more land with smaller lot sizes to allow students to buy at affordable prices.

I don't know what to do after my plans have completely changed, how to proceed?

Im in ontario for context. But I got a 3 year general BA in psychology, graduated october, 2023. My original plan was to apply to the police since ive always wanted to be a detective. But after re-evaluating things, ive come to the conclusion that it just isnt a good fit for me.

The thing is that before now, i was very sure of what i wanted, i was not planning on getting a master's so i haven't done any of the stuff i see my friends who are getting their master's do. Additionally, i went through a pretty rough time from 12th grade all the way through university, so some of my grades are not so amazing. It's not that it was too difficult or didnt read the material. i even read all my textbooks, just after all my classes has already ended. I was just going through a lot at the time.

Anyway, Since ive graduated ive just been working a min wage job and volunteering at my local men's homeless shelter.

I want to do something that involves counselling. Could i still become a therapist? Im just trying to figure out where to go from here since i never did the honours degree, just the general. And ive been out of school for 8 months now.

Marjorie Stamberg Protests Gag Order, Speaks Up for Palestinians

Marjorie Stamberg died on 29 May 2024 after a lifetime, cut short at age 79, of fighting for socialist revolution. She was a defender of the communism of Lenin and Trotsky, a key leader of the League for the Fourth International and its U.S. section, the Internationalist Group, a Marxist educator, a militant trade-unionist and a champion of all the oppressed. In November 2023, when it was becoming more difficult for her to walk, Marjorie attended three Palestinian solidarity protests in one week. She was determined to speak out against the genocidal war on Gaza by Israel and the U.S., which furnishes all the bombs and planes that make the slaughter possible. On November 16, she spoke at a rally called by Class Struggle Education Workers on the steps of the New York Department of Education, denouncing a gag order intended to silence any support for Palestinians by teachers, students or staff. Marjorie would not be silent. Read the article at https://www.internationalist.org/marjorie-stamberg-protests-nydoe-gag-order-on-gaza-protest-2311.html

Self Education and how to properly learn from information and research by yourself.

As someone who dislikes the current education system I always find I'm educating myself, but I feel that in order to further my education I need to dig deeper and learn from those who have been commendated for their teaching for years if not centuries, economists and philosophers like Socrates and Thomas Sowell and Aristotle are people who I would like to learn from and I guess my question is how would I even go upon finding the teaching of these centuries old philosophers and other teachers who do not necessarily have updated literature.

tldr How the hell do I learn from the teachings of Socrates and Aristotle and like philosophers or economists or just smart people who lived centuries ago.

I want to take an Online Bachelor's Degree in the USA but I'm a Filipino Citizen in the USA

Hellooo ! I'm a Filipina (20 years old) with a high school diploma and some college credits towards a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, I only did 2 terms out of 3 (trimester system) and is currently on a LOA. While my first year of college wasn't my strongest academically, my high school diploma is considered prestigious in the Philippines.

I'm interested in pursuing an online degree in schools from the US, but I'm unsure how my academic background will translate. Additionally, many scholarships seem limited to US citizens.

Here's my situation:

  • I'm currently working in the Philippines and have no plans to immigrate immediately. Finishing my degree here seems financially prudent for now.
  • I'd consider using a relative's US address for applications, but only for educational purposes.

My questions:

  • Has anyone faced a similar situation as an international student?
  • Are there universities in the US known for being more open to international students?
  • What are the realistic odds of securing scholarships as a non-citizen?

Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance :3

Help with name of inclusion hub

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if you could help me out at all.

I am setting up a new inclusion hub within my school that aims to ensure that all young people are able to access the curriculum, school community and wider community regardless of their background.

The location will be a corridor within the main facilities that consist of a couple of classrooms, a nurture room and a couple of offices.

I need a name for it though, and I'm trying to find a nuance between making it positive but not patronising.

Some ideas I have had so far are: The Cove Refresh The anchor Raise

Can you think of any others?

Thanks.

Education for men to make women feel comfortable

I’m in an organization and my leadership is all men. They seem to mean well but don’t have a good understanding of how to make women feel comfortable especially in social settings.

Some of them do innately, but some of them don’t and the ones that do, don’t call out the ones that don’t. I’m trying to figure out how to explain how to accommodate for trauma caused by the patriarchy within communication. Like validation, direct communication, less implications or jokes especially if you’re alone, and being more aware of body language.

Google has been extremely sexist like “you have to be gentle with women because they come from emotion” Or is like tips on how to talk to girls to date them.

I have a lot of trauma and I am more sensitive in that area, but I feel like there’s a lot of people who feel similarly and it would be better for everyone if communication was more accommodating? Like I don’t see a downside for people not traumatized by the patriarchy?

Does anyone have books, tips, skills, workshops, or anything that I could use as resources to better explain like the importance of compassionate communication for like traumatized people, specifically women who have been societally groomed, not to speak up for themselves or who have fawn responses?

*I’m using super gendered terms but meaning based on relationship to patriarchy/abuse/assault/trauma

School claims my sister is a non-grad 20 years after getting her diploma

Hello, hoping someone here has some ideas. My sister was supposed to graduate in 2004, although she had to do summer school courses to get enough credits. The school said that she finished everything, and though she did not walk with her class, they did give her the physical diploma when they said she was finished.

When applying to a new job last year, the employer informed her that she was listed in the state system as a non-grad (likely found through a background check). They accepted her diploma as proof, but she's been fighting with the school about it now. They claim she is missing an English 11 credit, although according to her transcript she did complete English 12 - which how could she take that if she didn't pass the Eng 11 class? The summer school does not keep records (not sure how that's legal) and they state they just send them to the school. Not sure if it's relevant, but our old high school was torn down and replaced years ago, so that may be how records were lost.

The assistant superintendent is basically saying their hands are tied, but if they lost records, that is not my sister's responsibility. They stated non-grad diploma's are kept in a safe in the office, but my sister has hers. They also state they typically hold a board meeting for grads that are approved to receive the diploma off cycle, and she's not on any of them. She's 38 going on 39, I'm not sure how to get this resolved. We're in Central OH and this was a public school, does anyone have any ideas? I found a news story of a similar case that happened up in Toledo, but there was nothing about how they were able to resolve it, if they ever did.

A platform that helps you demonstrate your skills without a degree/or elite degree?

I think many people have a lot of skills but can't reach top universities and are then for the most part kept out of the best jobs. If there was an opportunity for employees to document their skills through task-based activities and conversational style interviews, do you think this would be a good way to level the playing field? Essentially looking at skills and creativity over credentials(which I don't think we currently do). Please let me know! Any criticisms or other ideas are great as well

Retired teacher returns to school

Submitted June 17, 2024 at 01:23PM by captainultimate https://ift.tt/jBhazyv

I'm looking for advice on what I should learn about / study before doing my gases / functional skills maths and English. I am VERY behind and feel hopeless :/ I barely know basic math!

my post history has some more information!

I have not been in education for a couple of years (I stopped going to school at 13 I was going through a hard time and just stopped and other reasons) I am now 19.

But, I always planned or had it in mind that I'll go back into education in a few years or so. I was a child and didn't really realise what I was doing - but I was also suffering mentally alot so I didn't think much of these things most of the time.

Now I am going back into education, I went to a community college recently but they recommended me to do functional skills instead of gases as my levels are too low on the test they gave me. And I understand why, I didn't understand anything, even I knew the questions were basic maths but because I am so bad at math I really struggled. These are things I probably would have been better at years ago but with most no, I never learned much.

I struggled to answer the questions because I don't know my full times tables (but I'm learning now) I and adding up large numbers is hard for me I kept getting confused and stuck so I just didn't answer.

  • I've made a few posts and have written a list on what to learn about, but I plan to do my functional skills in college in a few months (not the actual test I think it's just a few hours per week of them teaching the class for a year or so and the actual test Is next year.) But I'm still unsure on what to learn about, I've been trying to learn basic maths because I don't even understand decimal points fully or percentages etc etc. For example I know 6.4+2.2=8.6 (?) But when does the decimal numbers stop counting? After ten? No, I want to understand it fully and have watched one video explaining which has helped me alot but I'm not quite there yet.

I want to know any recommendations on what I should learn about now before I go into college and what I should learn about that will be related to the functional skills. I am 19 now and feel down about my situation and sometimes very hopeless but I don't want to keep losing hope and letting it get the better of me... I also enjoy learning like I look forward to it now so.. I just feel so overwhelmed because I'm really starting from 0..:/

I don't exactly want to be "smart" I just want to atleast be decent and pass any important exams :/ I want to be able to have a normal life.

Looking for someone to interview regarding educational experiences in a culture outside of the United States

Hello everyone!

I am a current grad student studying education in the United States looking to interview someone from a country besides the U.S. (although you can live here now, I am looking to interview someone who grew up elsewhere).

I have about 15 questions that I'd like to ask regarding ethnicity, language, culture, and educational experiences in your home country. The interview will be conducted in English, so please be sure that you are comfortable writing/speaking in English before agreeing to participate. Comment here if you're interested and I will send you a DM!

Thank you in advance!

Hey Reddit, I need some advice on dealing with a difficult instructor situation. Has anyone experienced this? How did you handle it?

This Spring semester, I took two courses with the same instructor. I didn't know her beforehand or ask for student reviews. Recently, I received grades that seemed unfair (a B and a C), and I'm concerned she might have manipulated them because I stood up for myself and set boundaries when she crossed the line and tried to infringe on me. She even threatened to manipulate my grades if I discussed her poor teaching further.

Throughout the semester, she didn’t upload grades on LMS regularly, leaving us in the dark about our academic progress. She refused to answer my questions or clarify concepts, making it hard to understand the material. Once, when I asked for clarification in class, a classmate’s confusing answer left me more perplexed. When I asked the instructor for further explanation, she refused.

Her unprofessional behavior extended beyond the classroom. She interrupted students, ignored questions during office hours, and once made me wait 15 minutes outside her office during a scheduled meeting while she chatted on her phone. This meeting, approved by the department head, was supposed to be a review of my exam, which she had previously refused to discuss.

She didn’t finish the curriculum and held exams on material we weren’t prepared for. In FIN301, we were supposed to cover six chapters, and in EBA310 (a course on Power BI and Excel), we only needed to cover four chapters.

If you're a student at AUST or planning to attend, beware of registering for courses with her. Her behavior is unprofessional, and she seems driven by her own interests. What should I do to address this situation? How can I ensure this doesn't happen to others? And that I get the grades I deserve?

TLDR: I had an unprofessional instructor who seemed to manipulate grades, refused to help students, interrupted them, and didn’t finish the curriculum. How should I address this, and what can be done to prevent it from happening again and ensure that I get the grades I deserve?

Collective teacher efficacy vs. teacher of the year.

In educational research, a contradiction emerges between the principles of collective teacher efficacy and the individual accolades bestowed upon Teachers of the Year. While collective teacher efficacy underscores the profound impact of collaborative teaching efforts on student achievement, the singular recognition of an exceptional teacher suggests an inherent undervaluation of the collaborative spirit that drives true educational success. This paradox not only highlights a fundamental issue within educational recognition systems but also reflects a broader societal problem: the tendency to overlook the power of collective action in favor of celebrating individual accomplishments.

I am curious what others in this community think about this evaluation.

Admission in America university

Hello, I have a query. I recently completed an HND in Business, a UK qualification with a duration of two years. After completing it, one can "top up" the HND to a bachelor's degree at a university or college. I am aware that the "top up" year is only available at UK universities, but I wish to study in the United States. I am wondering if I could apply to an American university or college with my HND and receive exemptions for the courses I have already completed, allowing me to gain admission into the second or third year. Could you please let me know if this is possible or if there are any other routes available for me? Thank you.

Graduating at 20?

I'm planning out the rest of my highschool and I realized I'll graduate at 20. I'm 18, but very behind in credits because of mental health reasons that affected my learning. I'm also not bright on academics and I have ADHD.

The thought of graduating so late sends me into a ugly thought spiral because all my peers and younger have already graduated— I don't want to have to keep my education a shameful secret, and it's hard seeing how everyone is far ahead and I'm stuck in grade eleven. Should I drop out and get the GED equivalent in my country (CAEC)?

I'll be calling my school during the week to ask for advice, but I thought about asking here for any outside words of wisdom. Thank you 🙏

Haven’t gone to alternative school for two years when originally assigned. Is there a way to still go to school?

Hi! so I(15f) got suspended 2 years ago from 8th grade, but I want to go into 9th grade next school year. My mom didn’t want me to go alternative school and so I never went and stayed homeschooled, but I really want to try school again. Do we talk to the school board and see what we can do?

Enrolling Child in School but strange questions about previous employment?

My friend is enrolling their kid in school and these questions about previous employment were included:

Please disclose if you've worked the following jobs in the last 3 years - picking pecans, cotton, sugar cane, onions and other fruits or vegetables - worked on a tree farm or orchard - canning or packing fruits and veggies - working in a slaughterhous - planting seeds, preparing land or building fences - cutting hay - feeding pigs, cows or chickens - working on a dairy farm, cattle ranch or fishery

What purpose do these questions serve? It feels under handed racial profiling, based on the area we live in.

Collaboration Proposal: Expanding Your Channel with a New Educational Platform

Hi reddit

I'm looking for cofounder that knows how to  program websites

 I'm looking for Feedback

  • How many visitors do you think I will get a month?
  • Do you have any suggestions on what I can include or focus on?
  • I'm still struggling a bit about Monetize

Feel free to DM me

The Idea: Internet Education Platform

The Idear is a website and app that curates educational content from across the internet, providing organized and accessible learning resources like videos, websites, podcasts, blogs, and more. The goal is to make it easier for people to learn everything they want to know from the internet, categorized by age and topic.

A Short Story About Me

I am dyslexic, which made traditional schooling and university very challenging for me. For me, school felt like asking a person in a wheelchair to run a marathon. However, after school, I discovered my passion for learning about business, startups, finance, technology, health, and more through the internet. I realized that I learned much more online than I ever did in school—probably 85% of my knowledge comes from the internet, 6% from school, and 9% from my parents.

The Problems

  • Quality Content Discovery: It is difficult to find well-explained YouTube videos, websites, or Reddit posts without a lot of fluff.
  • Knowledge Gaps: How should you know what you don't know? In other words, how can you search YouTube if you don't know what you're looking for? This challenge can be addressed by using a website that categorizes content by age groups and topics. Such a site would allow you to browse through various categories relevant to your age and interests, helping you discover the information you need even if you aren't sure what to search for initially.
  • Scattered Resources: Educational content is spread all over the internet and not consolidated in one place.
  • Lack of Essential Life Skills: I wish I had learned about first principles thinking and working backwards (and more) sooner, as these approaches could have helped me to make better decisions in life.

Why This is Helpful

  • For the generation that grew up with the internet, many feel they learn more online than in traditional educational settings. The internet offers a variety of content that can often explain topics better than schools and universities.

It Will Get a Ton of Traffic Because

  • There is no competitor (no website exists that is like this).
  • A single platform that consolidates educational resources from various sources, reducing the time and effort needed to find quality content.
  • Curated high-quality educational materials.
  • Content organized by age and topic, allowing users to follow a tailored learning journey suited to their interests and educational level.

Some Ways to Monetize the Website, App, and Email Newsletter

  • Google ads.
  • Ads between topics.
  • Affiliates for Amazon books.
  • Membership for premium content.
  • Subscription model.
  • Paywall (only for videos we own or with permission and hosted on Vimeo) or licensed content.
  • Freemium model.
  • Sponsorships and partnerships.
  • Donations.

The Vibe

  • Motivated to learn something.
  • Motivated to change life.
  • Not spending hours on the platform and afterward realizing it was just a waste of time.
  • High-quality.
  • “This was helpful. I will send this to my friends."

How the Content Will Work

The team will curate and upload content, including YouTube videos, books, Reddit discussions, podcasts, and user submissions. Content will be organized by age and topic, with summaries and explanations. The website and app will feature the same content, while the email newsletter will provide deep dives into specific topics. We will create YouTube videos that thoroughly explain topics that are not adequately covered by existing content on other platforms.

Content creators can contribute in the following ways:

  • YouTubers (like Better Ideas): Link their videos and provide a small summary.
  • Authors (like Robert Greene): Link their books and provide a small summary.
  • Podcast Creators (like Andrew Huberman): Link their podcasts and provide a small summary.
  • Sell their courses on the platform (like betterideas); we will have strict guidelines for courses.

The content will have to be approved by our team to ensure that only high-quality content is available on the platform (no Fake Gurus).

This is just an example. There will be thousands more. There will be two categories: age from 1 to 100, and topics from business, life advice, health, quotes, etc.

I’m not particularly caught up in the academics of education but have been paying a little more attention to reading since our new curriculum in Australia committed to structured synthetic phonics.

I had a quick peruse of the executive summary and it doesn’t seem to make any strong conclusions apart from “let’s relax a little”.

I haven't been in education since I was 12. I am now 19 & I am very behind but want to learn and catch up, my main problem is I'm terrible at maths, always have been, I really want to improve - any advice much appreciated!

I don't know my full times tables even easy ones, I feel so down about my situation but I would love to learn and feel like it's the right time for me now as my mental health has improved alot too and I truly want to learn.

I don't understand basic math, I struggle to multiply and divide which probably is due to me not knowing my times tables... And I don't understand much maths at all and it's hard to find explanations when i don't even know the names for it... For instance I don't understand the say 2.4 + 3.2 the reason why is because I don't understand the points, I remember learning years ago but I've since forgotten and I don't think I ever learned fully to understand.

I feel so stuck and overwhelmed and wish I started sooner, I let anxiety and self doubt stop me :/ but I also had bad depression in the past and I sort of gave up.

I would really appreciate any advice or any websites perhaps explaining certain maths?? 😊 I feel a bit like I'm expected to just understand but I need someone to explain it all to me.

I have started a community college so they will help me, I want to practice at home too in the meantime and I'll also have homework. Atm I really really want to learn my times tables atleast to a normal extent because I struggle with the most basic maths questions..!!

AI in Education May Require Us to Return to 15th-Century Pedagogy

This piece is a more radical take on what AI means for education that focuses on basically abandoning assessment and a lot of the more 'traditional' parts of modern education.

I'm curious if you think education will be recognizable in, say, 2050, or if it will be totally different than what it is now. Is this just 'one more thing' or a total inflection point?

Seeking suggestions on educational opportunities for 16 year old.

Hello!

I have a 16 year old daughter who is telling me that she isn’t feeling challenged enough at school. She’s currently attending an IB school and doing exceedingly well, and is craving something more.

I suggested that she consider trying a college level class online, and she’s open to that, but also wondering if there might be other options to consider as well? She doesn’t really have any particular area of interest but leans hard toward geography and languages.

Would love to hear any suggestions. Also, how does it work if a high school student wants to take a college course? Does she need to apply for admission first? Are there any non-obvious implications to her taking a college class or two? We lived in the US prior to moving to Norway 2 years ago (she is a dual citizen) - there are no colleges near us, so it would have to be online, and I’m sure she would prefer an American school to do it in English.

Going to university straight away or wait a year?

I skipped a grade when I was younger, so I’ll end up graduating when I’m 16-17. I live in Toronto where the only way you can take dual credit is if you’re going into the trades. I’d like to be a neurosurgeon someday- I’m completely in love with the profession but don’t want to hurt my chances by going to a “bad” school. I don’t think Johns Hopkins will take me though as a technically early graduate.

So should I graduate early and then apply, or graduate early, take a gap year and then apply? Which do you think more prestigious American schools would like to see? Which would improve my chances of getting accepted? PS I don't want to stay in high school since there's pretty much no other course that interests me, Im Taking everything I wanted to already

Thanks!

Trying to find out if this is a thing.

I'm trying to find out what an assistant superintendent told me is actually a thing or not.

I'm in Ohio and have recently discovered during a job background check that my high school has me as a non-graduate. Please keep in mind I have been out of high school 20 years. I was short some credits so I attended summer school and upon completion received my diploma.

According to the assistant superintendent, the diploma I received has the wrong date on it. It has what would have been the original date on it had I not needed summer school. He also said the board of education would have had to approved off me graduating and there is no record of me on the agenda.

What is baffling me is the claim that the board of education approves all possible graduates. So I'm trying to find out if this is really a thing.

2 years bachelors in VFX or Animation

I am going to be 30 in a few months. I completed my 12 years of education, but due to financial reasons, I had to start working early. Now I feel a bit left out because of my incomplete studies and want to pursue a 2-year bachelor's degree in design, animation, or VFX. Please suggest any online bachelor's programs in these fields. I dropped out of community college years ago, now I want to pursue a degree. Please advise!

I am pretty ashamed at the juncture in my life I am at right now. I had always been a great student for most of my life, amassing many awards and honors until high school. Things took a turn once I started community college. I performed pretty well during my first year, though admittedly not to my full potential. By the second year, I felt seriously fatigued and unmotivated and eventually, started missing many classes until I unofficially dropped out.

About a year or so afterward, I tried to make up for my failure by privately retaking my country's college exams and had acceptable passing grades. I was able to get employment and have been working ever since. Now, I am at another juncture in my life where I feel that I am now ready to pursue a Bachelor's degree. Of course, my community college failure has come back to haunt me since I will need to provide transcripts in my application.

The truth is that I have avoided the thought of starting my degree for this same reason before. I just need advice on how to proceed.

Would this cause me to not graduate?

So we have an assessment we had to do at the beginning, middle, and end of the year. It asked us about the quality of life at school, about how we feel at school, and other things like that. It's a graduation requirement. Thing is, I didn't do the middle one since I had mock interviews that day. I had to skip the survey for those interviews. I never completed it after. Do you think the school will not let me graduate and walk since I didn't do that survey? I can't do it now.

I'm a senior with good grades

I’ve been doing some research, and I can’t find any solid evidence from reputable sources about not having phones in school improving mental health? I’ve seen a lot of articles about taking phones completely away from kids, and then I’ve seen articles about teachers complaining about phones in school, but not a lot about banning phones only during school and how its improved mental health?

METCO in my district is further dividing staff and hurting black youth

Let me start with this: I am Hispanic staff from one of the METCO districts, a member of a National Pan-Hellenic Council fraternity, and grew up in a city in low income housing. I preface this as my views may not be the same as most and wouldn’t want people assuming I’m an angry disgruntled white staff member.

First, the directors are completely radicalized by their ideology of DEI and wokness, to the point where they actively seek out racism and cause huge issues for well meaning administration and staff. They have the staff and admin so scared that there are literally no punishments for students from Boston. This in turn, means no punishments for any student in an entire building. It kills me to see because these boys of color NEED discipline and guidance and compassion… and they get none and run wild. So many lack a father and the METCO program does everything to act as a devouring overprotective mother. Any yes….motherly love is needed as well, but the way METCO operates in my district is in my humble opinion hurting black youth and making them believe racism lurks around every corner waiting to bring them down. A narrative I don’t fully agree with as it makes them resentful and non-resilient.

Has anyone seen this in their districts as well? Not looking for a war of words here (though I welcome peoples views especially ones different than mine) but perhaps it’s the ADMIN staff and not the program as a whole. Thanks

Inner city schools are bad not because of "funding" but because the parents are uninvolved and the students are lazy

I currently teach at a school located at an upper-middle class community. My students are so much better than my previous students from the Title 1 (low-income school). They are always willing to learn and do what is required of them. The parents are in regular communication with me to discuss their child progress. And they are constantly making sure their kids come to school with their homework. Back when I was teaching at a Title 1 school, I was dealing with mostly uninvolved parents. It was a struggle to even reach the parents. My emails and phone calls were constantly ignored. The uninvolvement from the parents perpetuated a culture of laziness for the students. It was a struggle to get them to pay attention and complete their class work. It was also a struggle to get them to turn in their homework. At that point, you can't blame the teacher. Their culture just doesn't value education. I rather spend my time teaching kids that want to learn. Funding has little very little to do with why the kids aren't learning. It's all about effort.

Why is there so little about Laszlo Polgar's experiment?

I just learned about his experiment which sounds amazing but the only thing that I saw regarding it is his own book. Why is that? Is it false? Do we have better literature?

Why does it seem like his work isn't looked into that much?

Education charity

I want to know the process to create and run a charity to upskill underprivileged students in the area of contemporary skills like GenAI. I need guidance on how to register, operate and sustain such a venture. This will be 100% not for profit and will serve a purpose to give it back to the society. Any advice welcome and thanks for reading on.

LGS Is Finally Over. I can’t believe it!

So I just took LGS, the high school entering exam in Turkiye. You take this exam in eight grade and you have to study a lot, and I mean a lot. Most people like me also go to cram school and we barely have any free time. This exam was in the second of June and me and over a million other students took the exam. I can’t believe it’s finally over! I’m not joking when I say that you get addicted to studying. I got bored today and I literally solved some math questions because I had nothing better to do. Anyways, here are the booklets of the exams I took (I took over a hundred exams) and the books I used. ( I couldn’t send the pictures because turns out, this subrettit doesn’t allow pictures for some reason. )

Also if you’re wondering my score, I got 482 in the exam. If it wasn’t for my two mistakes in math because of attention, I would get a score of 494 😭 But I already had a scholarship in a private school so it’s fine.

NYC Allocates $127 Million for Public School Funding Programs Amid Budget Negotiations

In a collaborative effort, Mayor Eric Adams and Council Speaker Adrienne Adams announced a substantial school funding initiative at P.S. 184, the Shuang Wen School on the Lower East Side. The initiative entails the allocation of $127 million towards various public school programs, including those that received funding during the COVID-19 crisis, which is now set to expire. Notably, a portion of the newly allocated funds aims to mitigate the impact of decreasing student populations in certain communities.

Mayor Adams highlighted the City Council's decision to reinstate $20 million to the Summer Rising program, emphasizing its importance in providing year-round learning opportunities, especially in light of learning losses experienced during the pandemic. Additionally, he commended the council for allocating $32 million to sustain critical long-term public school programs that were initially funded with short-term COVID stimulus dollars. These funds will support teacher recruitment, tutorial assistance for kindergarten through second-grade literacy, and sixth- through eighth-grade math education. Furthermore, the initiative includes provisions for restorative justice programming, computer science education, digital learning resources, and parent and family support services.

Speaker Adams echoed her support for consistent investments in schools to ensure they can reliably provide quality education to students. She emphasized the significance of maintaining steady initial school budgets, allowing schools to plan effectively and meet the educational needs of their students.

Despite facing budgetary challenges, Mayor Adams underscored the importance of the allocated funds in maintaining stability and continuity in education. He emphasized the city's ability to accomplish these initiatives without resorting to layoffs or tax increases, attributing the funding to projected budget surpluses and effective budget management practices.

Overall, the announced funding initiative represents a significant investment in New York City's public school system, providing critical support to ensure the continuity and quality of education for students across the city.

Which class should I take ?

I’m a sophmore going into junior year in high school and I want to become a doctor and go into medical school after college. I’m debating whether I take the CTE program Biomed 3: Human Body Systems for this career, but I also want to get another AP class in and take a less medical science course, probably AP Chem or AP ES (or even AP Gov). What should I do ? I really want to take another AP but I also feel obligated to take the biomed class as it fits my career after high school. I already am taking Anatomy + Physiology senior year.

American education

Why do these people flaunt their education at others as if they are above them when in reality their education sucks, cant even define what a woman is or find France on the map.

What a joke and then they accuse others of being uneducated, lmao

I haven't been in education for a few years and now am 19,i feel so overwhelmed getting back into it all :(

I also don't have the best mental health so maybe that's contributing but I feel so overwhelmed and hopeless..! 🥲 I'm not sure where to start but I've posted about this before and know community colleges can help so I am going to join. Which is a big step for me as I was very nervous and obviously felt so behind, and honestly embarrassed. But I want to try to get myself on the best path for me. 😊 I was once in such a dark place mentally and i don't want to go back there. Currently, I feel low alot but also very bored and hopeless lately... I hate this, I am a bit excited for this new path but I guess my mental health has taken over and it's clouded with a grey feeling. :/

I would appreciate any advice!!

Edit: i haven't been home schooled, I stopped attending school at age 12 (almost 13) & the following years I just enjoyed not being in school I guess like most children at that age would.. But something deeper was going on, when I was turning 13, one of my parents (don't share for privacy reasons) passed away in a horrible way to cancer, it all happened so fast (they passed within a few months of the diagnosis) the following years weren't so good for me mentally, and my other parent had mental health problems so couldn't always support me In the best way.

But at 17 I was at my absolute worst with a constant dark feeling every day that I couldn't shake..! Thankfully it went away months ago but I still sometimes suffer mentally like extreme lack of motivation for house work or even basic things. When I was 16, I remember I felt so down about my education situation and I felt 100%hopeless, idk if it was possible depression, or just because i was so young, but I was convinced that's it, I can't have a proper education etc etc.

Through seeing other peoples stories online, I realised I'm not as alone as i felt and this is apparently common. It gave me hope. 😊

But currently i feel so much dread and overwhelmed!! :(

What was primary school like in the 90s?

I’m a 37 year old primary school teacher. I was asked to reflect on my own time at school today. All I could remember is textbooks and overhead projectors. Surely it was more than that though. Can someone help shed more light on what school was like in the 90s?

Will a M.Ed. from and English Uni still warrant a pay raise at a school in the US (Georgia)?

If someone has a B.S. in education from a US school and an M.Ed. from a school in the UK, will they still get the pay raise that they would get for an M.Ed. from a college in the US when teaching in the US, specifically in Georgia?

Community Colleges in US as international student

Can somebody help me can I as an international student be accepted to a community college? What are the requirements for admission usually? My problem is that im from russia and as far as I know our school diplomas arent recognised in us, so usually ppl need to spend additional year in school in us to get a proper diploma and be able to enroll in uni. Is there anything different requirements with community colleges? Im already studying in a uni in eu country, so would i be able to enroll based on that?

I remember when students actually failed.

Starting school I had a classmate who had to repeat grade one. When I graduated they were still in grade nine (never passed, ended up dropping out).

Is it a good idea to do another undergraduate programme again?

I finished my master's degree last year in social studies. After almost a year of job hunting, I felt hopeless and useless.

However, I have found myself increasingly drawn to mathematics, and I believe it will be much more useful for my career and future as well.

To ensure that this isn't just a rash decision, I have consulted many of my friends and family. They all support me, even though I am 25 now. But I am wondering if it is really worth it to spend so much money on another degree again because so much knowledge is accessible online.

Advice please

I am currently in high school in Scotland, I am taking 6 higher this year. Next year I am planning to do five subjects, hopefully 2/3 advanced highers and 2/3 highers. Unfortunately because of the subjects I want to take, I prosbably won’t be able to do Spanish at all. (I am fluent and want to get a formal qualification.) My mum suggested I could do a course over the summer, but I don’t know where to start or which type of qualification I could get. So, what type of course should I do? Preferably something short (intensive?) so I can focus on school work, and equivalent to roughly a higher/a level. Is there anything which doesnt have a set exam date and I won’t have to work over a whole year to do? Or should I just do it instead of an extra subject at school?
