Let me start with this: I am Hispanic staff from one of the METCO districts, a member of a National Pan-Hellenic Council fraternity, and grew up in a city in low income housing. I preface this as my views may not be the same as most and wouldn’t want people assuming I’m an angry disgruntled white staff member.
First, the directors are completely radicalized by their ideology of DEI and wokness, to the point where they actively seek out racism and cause huge issues for well meaning administration and staff. They have the staff and admin so scared that there are literally no punishments for students from Boston. This in turn, means no punishments for any student in an entire building. It kills me to see because these boys of color NEED discipline and guidance and compassion… and they get none and run wild. So many lack a father and the METCO program does everything to act as a devouring overprotective mother. Any yes….motherly love is needed as well, but the way METCO operates in my district is in my humble opinion hurting black youth and making them believe racism lurks around every corner waiting to bring them down. A narrative I don’t fully agree with as it makes them resentful and non-resilient.
Has anyone seen this in their districts as well? Not looking for a war of words here (though I welcome peoples views especially ones different than mine) but perhaps it’s the ADMIN staff and not the program as a whole. Thanks
