Some context: My schooling has recently moved online and because of this all our tests are open book.
I was taking a history quiz that was 4 multiple choice questions and one long answered one about the history of crime and the law. This particular quiz covered athens to rome in a very general. Im doing my quiz on an online platform called moodle. It automatically corrects the multiple choice, easy 4/4! So far so good.
I get to the long answer question and it is basically something along the lines of "what would a world with no private law and only criminal law look like?" Another easy one. My teacher had answered this question in class. I proceed to give the examples she gave: divorces would be lowered, disputes with neighbours would lead to criminal charges, small everyday infractions would lead to criminal charges like littering and j walking. I even add my own pov, the prison system would overflow. I remember at the last minute that she said the punishment would not suit the crime. All ideas that she either said in class or that other students proposed during the class zoom call. Seems like an easy little quiz.
I find out today that everyone's quizzes were graded except for mine and 2 other girls. They had the same long answered question as me (there were two or three options). We wrote similar answers since...well those were the examples given in class. We all wrote j walking along with other everyday examples (not paying for public transport, littering, trespassing). We all wrote about divorce and arguments with your neighbour.
The teacher mentioned to one or them that she wanted to speak to her privately concerning the test. Im worried she thinks we cheated even though we didnt.
One of the girls recorded her giving a list of examples in class that we mentioned. We also each proposed different ideas since we wrote it alone and each wrote different amounts and have different vocabularies.
How should i approach this teacher? We simply listed off some examples in common, but they were given to us in class. We thought of some similar everyday crimes, but i genuinely can't think of something else. We also did not get the same marks on the multiple choice.
I don't understand why the teacher thinks we cheated or what may have led her to believe we did. How should I speak to her to convince her I didn't do anything wrong? Idk what to do.
Hello everyone! I’m not sure where the right place to post this is but I’m giving it a shot.
My dad is in his late 40’s and is a really smart, hard working individual. He’s worked extremely hard to get where he is now and make the money that he does. His family didn’t have the money to get him into college when he graduated high school and back then, there wasn’t much of a push to go to college either so he never went and just went right into working. He’s worked so much that he was able to get me through college and is now doing the same with my younger brother.
Recently, he’s had a lot of time on his hands as well as options to move up within his job and make more money but he’s found that a lot of his growth is being hindered by not having some sort of degree. He’s expressed to me that if he could go back to school and get an associates, he would. It definitely interests him, the idea of having a college degree and with how he talks to me about it, I can easily tell that having a college degree is an accomplishment he wants for himself...
BUT: my dad has some conditions that need to be met in order for him to actually go forward with this, which is why I’m here asking for help because I wouldn’t know what schools do what he’s asking for and how to go about this process.
Here we go: The class needs to be strictly online. That’s non negotiable for him. To put this into perspective, My dads job involves a lot traveling at a moments notice. One minute he’s home and the next minute there’s a job out in Oklahoma that needs him there in less than 72 hours. Sometimes he can predict when he’s leaving, other times not so much. And he could be in Tennessee on Tuesday, Louisiana on Saturday and home in New Jersey by Monday morning. This may seem like he’s constantly busy, but he’s not. My dad does have a lot of free time when he’s not on a job and due to a recentish promotion, he’s home more than I’ve ever seen him my entire life.
Because of his unpredictable job, my dad cannot attend an in person college and the same goes for an online zoom/lecture class. He does not want to have the obligation to show up for an online lecture/zoom call because he will not be able to keep up with attendance when his class is at 8pm EST and he’s on an airplane to California and won’t be landing until 6pm PST. He could easily do class work and listen to recorded lectures on the airplane though!
My dad wants to go to a “real, credited college. Not a diploma hand-out school”. I feel like this is self explanatory.
He does not want to attend a school that has tests you need to show up in person for. If you don’t know what these are, a lot of schools will have you take majority of the class online but when it comes to the final exam or midterm, they require you to show up at a special location like your local community college and take the test publicly with verifications that my dad is who he says he is (think SATS). Again, this falls back on the unpredictability of his job and the fear of being unable to show up for an important test and failing it because he cannot just tell his boss of over a decade “sorry I can’t take this job in Michigan, I have a test at 5pm that day at my local library”. That will not fly.
Lastly, my dad wants to get an associates in business/management. He wants to avoid core classes as much as possible (I already told him everyone takes core classes and to suck it up) but obviously if this can be avoided, would love to know!
If anyone knows of any online schools that are credible, legit, and have this type of flexibility that he’s looking for, please let me know. I know my dad has a ton of conditions that may make the process of finding a school a little harder, which has discouraged him from seriously looking into this, but I think there has to be some college out there that will work around his time and pace. My dad spent his life working and pushing my brother and I to go to college and further our education because he was never able to. Now I feel like it’s my turn to give back in some way to him and change his thinking from “I was never able to go” to “I went and I did it”.
Any help is appreciated and if there is any advice you’d like to drop about what it’s like going back, the application process, the process in general, things I or my dad should know, please tell us. Thank you everyone!!
This is an amazing app for getting yourself organized when taking Online Classes.
I'm 19, Pakistani, non binary and in the 11th grade (education had been delayed because of family and financial issues). Just passed the 10th with an overall A grade. I'm considering NOT doing bachelors since my skill level is a little above intermediate. The only reason I want to go is for direction and making connections. But I'm considering doing a diploma or short courses instead? I want to study in London but it's really expensive. Do you think it would be worth putting in efforts for short courses/diplomas or should I just apply for bachelors? Also, do you know any sites or places I can look for grants or aids? I'd stay in Pakistan but I can't express myself in this country.
My kid is 5 now. Her school does not teach her reading, writing or math a lot. They do it but in a creative or play and learn way. In the long run, how much of parents involvement in kid's academics matter?
In reality do parents who show lots of involvement and take effort to teach kids different things have successful kids? How has your experience been so far.
I am currently a High School student and I openly choose to ignore most political matters. I, often, find myself to do this because in most of the schools I've been to I've been harassed or have seen people harassed because of their viewpoints of the matter, no matter how little or how much they know on the particular candidate or their political group. I, also, get disgusted by a lot of the behavior of people when someone gets elected into office and continuously bash a particular candidate. I know this will leave me to be fairly ignorant in my High School years, but based on who I see a day to day basis and the individuals of my school, I rather just stay ignorant, during my High School years, so I don't get into arguments about politics, as I don't really like arguing people.
Also, whenever I get into cultural or political arguments with someone, I always make it point to try to understand both sides of the argument. I've done this for almost every debate or argument that I've been part of and always try to open my mind to both sides. However, I feel extremely disheartened when I spend my free time trying to understand everyone's point of view, some individuals don't take the time to understand any other point of view besides their own.
This article from the Wall Street Journal was brief, but fascinating - https://www.wsj.com/amp/articles/teachers-find-higher-pay-and-growing-options-in-covid-pods-11601204400.
I hadn't considered that some pandemic pods might become permanent, as an incredibly personal way of teaching, cheaper than private schools, for those families who can afford it.
Some highlights from the article - "Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, says while learning pods highlight the need for more small-group teaching in schools, she believes they’re a “pandemic Band-Aid” instead of a long-term, viable career option."
That feels like a very short-sighted view. If teachers find they are enjoying this, what's to inspire them to go back to the classroom? Better if she had said something along the lines of "COVID has made significant changes to our educational structure. We are interested to see what changes are most positive and how we can make those accessible to all students."
Because when you have teachers celebrating that they're finally teaching the way they've always dreamed of, when they're celebrating the lack of administrative red tape and getting a chance to delve deeply into history, geography, and earth sciences with eight year olds, I'm not so certain these changes will be temporary, nor that concerns about equity will be enough to pull them back into the classroom. I feel rather that these parents pr and children privileged enough to be in these pods might just decide to go for another year or two, and do it again for their younger children...
idk what to put here
I'm a college freshman and I'm asking because I'm trying to start an extracurricular program for high schoolers that is usually offered at the collegiate level.
edit: Also sorry if I'm posting too much. I really like this subreddit.
Should a government, especially those in poor regions invest first in education then in other regions? How would the country benefit?
Ok so alittle about myself, I live in Los Angeles so I would most likely work with LAUSD. I always wanted a job where I’m not stressing and make $100k+/year.
Now I know some of you will complain saying “asssistant principal is a stressful job!” bullshit, engineers and doctors have it way worse. Being an assistant principal is nowhere near as difficult.
I’ve always enjoyed the school environment and would love to work with teachers and students in making our education system better.
Also you are guaranteed holidays and weekends off. And lets not forget Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Years vacation time.
Throwaway account.
I am in the process of fostering to adopt a 15yo. He could come to me as early as next week. His background, particularly with respect to his education, is nothing short of a mess, and I'm looking for advice on picking up the pieces and supporting him the rest of the way, to hopefully a diploma.
He has been involved in "the system" - either in delinquency or abuse/neglect - since he was eight years old. He has not attended what I would call a "real school" since about that time, and was expelled from one prior to that (for accidentally bringing a knife to school). While in the system, he has bounced around to between 8-10 small schools - either really crappy charter, or specialized public that also (typically) weren't great. He also spent one entire year (should have been his 7th grade year) on the run.
As I've gotten closer to receiving him, I've gotten a clearer picture of the damage that has done, and it's not pretty. Take his current placement for example. He has had an IEP for sometime now, for unspecified LD and EI. He was placed at this facility, with an on-grounds charter school, late last year. The child has not had an IEP completed in that time (no review, nothing). Further, the IEP they were "working off of" (if you could call it that) was missing more than half of its pages. When I confronted the Special Education teacher about this, I was told we had to "make do" with what we had. When I inquired to his grade level, I was told 8th grade by one person, 9th by another, and 11th by a 3rd. He is biologically in 10th grade. I could seriously go on all night, I promise you there is more. Needless to say, I've raised holy hell, and this has resulted in numerous complaints and investigations at very high levels that are ongoing. But those don't help the kid in the here and now.
The most recent testing I've received on him was from 2017, the last time he was in any public school setting. This indicated he struggled with basic sight words, and could not identify all pre-primer sight words. I've been told this has improved, but not drastically. He is certainly not at grade level. What good news I have is that he has a decent amount of credits (9) for a partially incoming sophomore and a rather impressive GPA (3.7), though I suspect this likely comes from his recent placements "passing him along". Other good news is that he is a remarkably hard worker. He truly does want to succeed and I believe he has it in him to succeed.
My concerns as he comes to me are multi-fold: (1) I worry he is going to absolutely drown as he is put into a high school with thousands of students, not thirty; (2) I worry he is woefully unprepared for a high school curriculum; (3) a principle reason for his IEP is emotional impairment, and I worry about this massive transition (in school and life) with respect to that; (4) COVID is a thing, and virtual or remote learning is a nice wildcard in this equation to boot.
I am fairly well educated, with a BA from a top university. I don't necessarily worry about helping him when I can, but I'm only useful to an extent, and certainly not as much when in-person resumes. I want to ensure he gets the services he needs to succeed, but I was privileged enough to not be involved in Special Education, and I'm learning as I go. I am a fierce advocate for him (this current school hates me, as I do them), but I need to know what I'm advocating for.
I have a call scheduled with the Director of Special Education at his soon-to-be school tomorrow morning to speak about all of this and give them a warning about this absolute clusterf heading their way.
Any advice, on any of the above, is welcome!!
I am currently researching about the effects of how an underfunded/low-income school has on a student. Personally, when growing up, I found myself lacking in resources/activities such as extracurriculars, no after school program, no mentors, no tutoring, and the list goes on. Eventually, I felt discouraged seeing that my school had limited resources and there was not enough funds to help.
I am looking for stories from students and/or educators about how a low-income school impacted their school life/future?
Hello Reddit community, I’m classed as mature student I’m 21 years old and doing a 1 year access course in criminology.
Just wondering if I can do anything else finically to help me I’m claiming Universal credit (benefits) to support myself as I don’t work but I haven’t informed them I’m classed as full time student:/ I live on my own in a 10 bedroom house/ shared accommodation which isn’t the nicest to afford to be able to study well to bring down the costs of my previous flat that was £650+ a month inc bills. I now pay £385 a mont bills included.
I applied for a student loan for the course which has all been approved but is their anything else I can do to boost my income minus the obvious of working? Where I live due to the COVID situation their isn’t anything available on the days I’m not at college... All help is massively appreciated, thanks👍🏽
My son is in the 7th grade, and they are teaching medieval history. I think it will be hard to relate to. So I am wondering if there is a game where each kid represents one of the invading tribes. As the game evolves, the tribes move west into Roman territory and settle down ( the Franks in France, the Lombards in Lombardy, etc. ). It might be something like risk. Anyone ever hear of a game like this?
Do you have any extracurriculars (besides sports) that belong to the district as a whole instead of a specific school?
This is a relatively long post here, but important to me and hopfully spurs creative thoughts in everyone.
Few years ago I ended up discussing with one of my superiors about an incidence in that particular institute that led me to think, what it means for the organization to foster deep, meaningful and in-depth knowledge-sharing culture.
I have been thinking this question for a while now, and would love to hear your thoughts around the issue. Here's what I have been pondering lately on the matter.
Educational institution as a whole would benefit from a working culture that is based on trusted knowledge-sharing through communication and dialogue between all stakeholders, even between schools, organizations and policy makers.
Most of us are familiar with the Aristotle's project that Google revealed in 2015. It struck me with disbelief back then that the middle managers were not informed of work performance benefits arising from lower levels of micromanagement and better internal communication. Now the question is, how many of teachers, head teachers or other education professionals and leaders are educated to communicate effectively, lead team meetings that strive for mutual understanding and psychological safety paying attention to everyone present, to go through pressurized discussions and deal with difficult issues where negative emotions emerge? How to act as ombudsmen between parents, colleagues or students. How to restore trust that is broken to the point of legal liabilty?
Difficult issues are difficult for a reason. We are supposed do undress our ego from the need to be right and heard of and verbalize our emotions that often lead to vulnerability and option for the other party to take advantage of us. We tend to focus on fear instead of possibilities. Fear that may arise from existential, fundamental, social or competence issues introduces behavioral reactions that rarely build up confidence or show up as a virtue.
Acknowledging the psychosocial framework and supporting the growth of individual strengths is the new black in leadership also in education. Trusted and open channels of communication penetrating the organizational hierarchy will boost our ability to cope and succeed as a team of teachers, as an organization, institution and society. I believe that sharing responsibilities and freedom, allowing failures and communicating clearly the four W's (why, what, who and when) embedded in the new black of leadership will tap the self-esteem of everyone and work begins to blossom. The same rools applies rather well in parenthood too.
So, how to foster such in-depth and meaningful knowledge sharing culture within the educational setting? Well, it's all boils down to defining the processes that involve some form of interaction and communication. And when the communication need arises, listening is gold, asking meaningful questions that allow the person to express feelings and ideas freely is equally important. Leaders are needed to back up the process and include the well-being at work as an internal strategy. Good and open dialogue is the foundation of well-being. Once the strategy is laid out, the school can begin to design the "tools of trade" and start the journey to become the best school ever.
I know, it's not exactly that straightforward, but broadly speaking, the fundaments are there.

Dear Early Years Educators,
Who can please clarify this to me:
Is 1 to 1 correspondence matching number symbols to cardinal value (quantity) or is it comparing cardinal values, i.e comparing two different quantities?
Hello I’m currently taking Business Information System major. I’m gunna be in final next year. But right now , I’m kinda lost. I want to do additional learning about this major since the school’s closed because of Covid. Any suggestions for courses relating to this major or any suggested books?
I graduate this year with a degree in Educational Studies and I have the option to graduate a semester early. I was planning to complete a minor in management during my final semester but is it worth it? I plan to work as a lead teacher in a daycare and I dream of one day starting my own. Would a minor really benefit me for these plans?
Hello there! I wonder if an Associate's Degree counts as a university course, or a university degree. My father currently holds the equivalent of an associate's but I don't know whether it's a course or a full-on university degree.
Thanks for reading my question!
We all start weak and have to grow to level up.

Hi Educators!
My school is beginning the process of developing a plan for returning to school in person. I have so many questions about how to help the kids transition, but those seem pretty regional. Does anyone work in a school that is back in person? What are the safety protocols in place? Have they worked or not (I count 0 positive cases as not having been tested, where as 1 or 2 that didn't spread is really successful)? How are you feeling? Do you have any tips to share?
I have a friend who went back in person and she makes a little bag for each kid with their "outside supplies". She puts the kids into an abandoned parking lot and has each kid stand in staggered corners of the parking spaces, so they can lean and keep social distancing outside. She then has them write answers to questions on the boards, and hold up their answers. They've had one case, and it didn't spread. They also have giant plexiglass shields in the building, to block the teachers from the rest of the students.
Hi guys!
I'm a Master's degree student in Lithuania. Unfortunatly my uni online library doesn't have access to most of the sources that I need :(
Last year while studying Batchelor's degree a friend of mine gave me his Cambridge University log in and I used it as my main online library where I got all my books and research articles.
Unfortunatly he already graduated and I can not longer access the library.
Maybe someone could help me out with finding free sources or maybe (just maybe) someone who studies in BIG universities like Cambridge could give me the log in? I know it sounds sketchy but I'm desperate at this point 🙃
Hello, this is just a quick question about education, I'm in a crossroad and not sure what to do.
(I live in the UK)
We moved into the UK 5 years ago when I was 15, I was mentally struggling and couldn't really keep up with school, I'm now 20 and I feel like it Took or is Taking longer to find something that I'm passionate and interested in.
I now feel like I've found something that really interests me and I want to be educated on the topic more and probably have it as my career.
What I've found is Neurologists/Psychiatrists
(Now this is the Education part)
As most of you know Neurologists/Psychiatrists are some very smart people and they have to work very hard to get the proper education and degrees to have a job like that.
I've never really tried at school, nothing in school's interested me and I chose to turn my back on education.
Now after a few years I realised that I want to study.
(The problem)
Since I turned my back on education my grades are pretty bad and I need to Redo my basic grades Most importantly (GCSE maths and English) so I'm very far away.
Can someone that has experience or information educate me how you get to that form of education (M.D) and move along to such a profession, I clearly have a long way to go but I believe that I can manage it with a lot of work and dedication.
How would you approach this if you'd be in my situation? Bottom of the barrel when it comes to grades and have a dream to get an M.D / be a Neurologist or Psychiatrist.
Sorry for the rant.
Note that the global jurisdiction clause of the national security law in Hong Kong technically governs everyone on this planet. And the law is incredibly vague and broad, meaning that you may violate the law by criticizing the CCP.
Educators and students need to be aware of this horrible law. Remember, CCP agents are operating at a global scale.
Our school is bringing hybrid kids all back together, from 2 days (every other day) to 4 days. The students on continuous learning (remote) are getting totally dropped to zero live classes. Parents(remote) are pretty upset because this news is being dropped with zero warning. They were told they would have both online and live classes....
I am a 16 years old High School Student from Turkey.
How can raising the education and prioritizing education help a war torn country, even countries in general, help improve them and making them more independent and self-reliant?
Edit: typo in the title, meant to say education. :)
Hi everyone! I'm currently studying for my Praxis tests. The first one was the core test and it went well. Now I'm onto the one listed in the title. Any recommendations on how to study for this and how intensive it is? I'm hitting a brick wall.

I have a degree and a license to teach special education in an elementary school from NC. I am considering moving to high school or middle school but I cannot find information on what further certifications I would need to make that move. Anyone know the NC policy? Is it just additional praxis scores or would I need to go back to college?

Hi, I'm looking for advice on applying to fashion school. Maybe some personal experiences and some real stories and personal experiences. I can't post on r/fashion, does anyone else know a good sub I could post my question to?
I'm asking because I'm currently developing such a framework, but I'm with the impression that people don't get the educational potential of it.
Any favorite systems or frameworks you currently use or plan to buy?
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine has released its big review of Coronavirus evidence relevant to school reopening. It can be found at https://www.nap.edu/read/25858/chapter/2
I teach all of the ELL students in my grade level. I have for years and love my ELL elementary kiddos!
I tried to get a TESOL endorsement in undergrad, however I could never enroll in the entry level class. It was a basic college level diversity class and students outside of edu always got enrolled first. Thus, edu majors (like myself), had all of the higher edu classes required but couldn’t enroll in the 101 class.
Does your state require a TESOL endorsement to teach ELL only/support classes?
Do I need to go back to school for ONE entry level class?
(I feel this is back tracking and a waste of my time/money when I have taken all the higher level classes and taught all the ELL students in my grade for 5+ years. I know TESOL endorsements differ by state as well. I just don’t want to pay another few grand for one class when I have all the higher level classes and experience.)
Could I apply for a TESOL job w/o the official paper if I’ve done all the other classes? Especially if I’ve had years of experience?
I’m a High School student from New York and my French teacher - I think - is struggling. She doesn’t usually use technology and I’ve seen some kids in my class trick her because they make up some bullshit about technology. Also, in my school, she told me her French 2 and 3 classes are behind because during remote learning she had to slow down and couldn’t properly teach the language - on top of struggling with figuring out how to even use a computer. In New York, we have standardized tests for our LOTE/foreign language classes (usually only given to students who have had 3 years of experience learning a language) so I believe she’s even more stressed knowing her French 3 students might have a test to complete and (according to my friend) they never even attempt to speak French in her class.
So I was just wondering if other foreign language/LOTE teachers are experiencing similar problems?
I’m in French 2 this year and I’m only not that bad at French because I forced myself to socialize with French speakers on Discord and play video games with them, so that I could practice the language, but not every student will and can do that. So, now I’m wondering how are people going to learn a language if they barely speak it during class now?
So I’m going to be starting school back up in the spring and studying secondary education to eventually teach high school history and Econ/gov. I really want to throw myself into the education space while in school to gain credibility and experience, and am especially interested in learning about holistic education/educational practices that place emphasis on mindfulness.
This could really take the form of an internship, volunteer work, or part-time work with an alternative school, a Montessori school, an organization that focuses on education or mindfulness or both, or even something a little less related to education and more about mindset (the Arbinger Institute comes to mind here, for example).
So I just wanted to crowdsource from Reddit and see what organizations or initiatives I could look into. Thanks in advance for your suggestions, anything and everything is welcome!
Hey everyone my question as the title states is about varied practice and interleaving. Are they the same thing??? Or are they different?
Background: High School AP psychology teacher, extremely interested in the science of learning and educational psychology. My goal is to actively implement the research findings from these these two disciplines into my classrooms.
My Understanding:
For this example let’s say the students are doing a Practice Quiz
Interleaving - refers to practice that mixes up the questions by sub-topics within a subject. (e.g. Personality Unit: Trait theories, Psychoanalysis, Humanistic etc.)
Varied Practice - refers to practice that mixes up the difficulty of the questions (e.g. Acquisition, Application, Assimilation, Adaptation)
I would love to hear what you all think?
So I’ll be so real with you, I haven’t figured out exactly what i want to do yet. I am graduating in December with my bachelors in Business Administration and I am already thinking about going back for my Master’s. While I study this avenue, I have this very real feeling of dread that I only have a few more years until I’ll have to stop, get into severe debt or decide I want to be a doctor (which I have ZERO interest in doing).
I worked full time while going to college so I am 24 and I’m unsure if I feel this way because I literally have not stopped learning and educating myself or if I truly love to learn. It’s not that I don’t have passions, I do, and I use all the spare time I have volunteering for causes that drive me but that does not deflect from the fact that I love learning about everything. I love taking classes that I have no prior knowledge on and learning something brand new.
I was always that kid in high school who got straight As without trying but I did enjoy it. Once I got to college, I liked that I could challenge myself and I liked being able to have my job pay for it (but of course there is a cap).
Is this a normal experience? Is there anyone else like me? I’ve tried to google it but of course all that comes up is “Read This If You Don’t Want to Go To College”... so I’m turning to reddit 😬
Hi I need help. I believe my civil rights have been violated.
A college kicked me out for no reason. I've been calling them to notify them that I believe my civil rights have been violated and to request an apology from the college with no response back. I'm just being ignored.
It hurts so much because I know I didn't deserve this.
I don't know what to do. Can someone help me?
I've got my degree in business management, and I want to do something else for masters. I want distance classes

Lawrence Krauss: "One of the biggest pressures on administrators is the need to maintain bloated self-perpetuating bureaucracies. It is not uncommon for a university's administrative budget to exceed the budget for faculty salaries, or student support.
What can be done to reverse this slide? Fewer Universities, with far smaller bureaucracies would reduce competition for scarce funds and the need for administrators to focus on fund raising rather than academic integrity. Also, as the recent pandemic has made clear, many students would benefit more from going to community college rather than spending 4 years not being intellectual challenged at universities from which they may graduate with few practical skills. Universities should not be diploma mills, with budgets driven not by the demands of research and scholarship, but by, say, football revenues.
Openly reaffirming that Universities are communities of learning and research excellence, driven by free inquiry—no matter what—is a good first step, followed by promoting educational leaders who are up to the task of defending these communities. Students' intellects need to be challenged, at the expense of comfort, if necessary. We must not cancel Beethoven or Newton or Feynman, but instead freely debate and explore the full canon of humanity's greatest ideas and discoveries."
I made a YouTube video where I talk about a lot of the problems I have with grading, curious to hear what people think!
My university is using a couple of programs to ensure no cheating on exams. While I am all for preventing cheating, I'd rather other people cheat at this point. The one program, you have to show your entire surroundings, understandable. It also tracks your location, IP address, it can detect the difference between your voice vs. other people's voices, your face vs others, all computer processes, etc. It can even detect eye movements and movements that could be considered "cheating". Now in Alberta, we have a couple privacy acts protecting us against this, but there is apparently "implied consent" with all of this, and yeah I can understand that, on a legal level. In practice, I don't feel like I was completely informed before paying my non-refundable tuition.
I know there aren't many options that are viable, but I'm so uncomfortable with this. I feel like this is opening a can of worms that should stay shut. I can't even feel safe in my own home because there is always that underlying thought of, am I going to be accused of cheating (this happened a lot during lockdown. Hundreds of students were falsely accused and many had to hire legal help fight allegations, including one of my friends who almost has his entire educational career ruined). Will the university still be able to track my movements on my device, even when the program isn't running? Can they access private information on my device? I don't know, probably not. I doubt they would want to anyway. But still, I'm careful with even putting my last name online because of possible implications. Again legally, I understand I "consented", but I don't feel that way.
TLDR: Does anyone else feel like AI exam software is a massive violation of privacy?

Is there a way I could cross reference the texts from PDFs of past exam papers against the text of lecture slides, perhaps using it to automatically highlight important topics?
I’m interested in knowing: Did you always want to be a superintendent? Do you like your job? How long did it take to get there? What positions did you hold prior to your current job title? Do you have your doctorates or just your masters?
I’m 21 years old and I’m really passionate about education. I can’t see myself doing anything else. I’m still working on my bachelor’s but I just want to know more insight on this career path.
I’m close to finalizing my relocation plans (FL -> NC), and I’ve started looking at available vacancies in my area. As the title says, I’m wondering if I should disclose my gender identity. As a trans person, it’s a bit difficult to determine whether to apply as my preferred and soon-to- be legal name or use as my current legal name. I’m also a first-year teacher, so I’m a bit lost. Hopefully, someone here can help.
A bit more information, up until this point, I have not disclosed my gender identity to any of my employers, but since I will be doing top surgery in a few weeks, I feel as though it’d be too hard to conceal, hence my confusion.
I'm currently a High School student. I'm just confused because whenever someone asks a question I always stay respectful and don't comment on him asking that question, but whenever I ask a question about the topic and try to learn more about certain ideas that we just generally cover the other students seem to get annoyed. However, I don't get annoyed when they ask for the meanings for simple words or have trouble answering a question the was fairly easy for me, but they apparently have a problem with when I ask a question that goes deeper into a topic.
P.S.: I'm just asking this because one of my classmates blatantly said it was annoying and that it was wasting time, but I don't say anything when figuring out that 100-19 = 81 for a certain question is wasting time.
My grades were Good all Freshman Year Sophomore and Junior Year I became depressed and really Sucidal so I skipped school a lot and barley did my work Senior Year I got therapy and my grades are back to As And Bs could I still go to college. I really want to go even though mental health ruined most of high school
I think Kahoot will be a good thing to do initially. Other thoughts? Thanks!
a call for a precedent in dialogue to uncover the depth of historical connections that influence our perspective
“School failed me, and I failed the school. It bored me. The teachers behaved like Feldwebel (sergeants). I wanted to learn what I wanted to know, but they wanted me to learn for the exam. What I hated most was the competitive system there, and especially sports. Because of this, I wasn’t worth anything, and several times they suggested I leave.” — Einstein
Children are required by law to go to public mandated education programs for 12 years.
I would like to briefly put the U.S. Education system in its rightful context…
Psychologist Today: “Schooling, as it exists today, only makes sense if we view it from a historical perspective…
…With the rise of agriculture, and later industry, children became forced laborers. Play and exploration were suppressed. Willfulness, which had been a virtue, became a vice that had to be beaten out of our children… Anthropologists have reported that the hunter-gatherer groups they studied did not distinguish between work and play — essentially, all of life was understood as a play… Children’s lives changed gradually from the free pursuit of their own interests to increasingly more time spent at work that was required to serve the rest of the family…
In the Middle Ages, lords and masters had no qualms about physically beating children into submission… In America, in the mid 17th century, Massachusetts became the first colony to mandate schooling, the clearly stated purpose of which was to turn children into good Puritans…
Employers in industry saw schooling as a way to create better workers. To them, the most crucial lessons were punctuality, following directions, tolerance for long hours of tedious work, and a minimal ability to read and write. From their point of view, the duller the subjects taught in school the better…
As nations gelled and became more controlled, national leaders saw schooling as a means of creating good patriots and future soldiers…
School today is a place where all children learn the distinction, which was never known by hunter-gatherers, between work and play. The teacher says, “you must do your work and then you can play.” Clearly, according to this message, work, which encompasses all of school learning, is something that one doesn’t want to do but must; and play, which is everything one wants to do, has relatively little value.”
Before the industrial revolution, most people lived in the country and worked on farms.
The quality of life got much worse for most until workers’ rights were gradually won after long, difficult battles.
A man named Horace Mann created the foundation of our modern education system. He wanted every man to be able to compete in the economy: “The fragmented local options weren’t able to keep up with the shift in useful skills… a coordinated effort was required. If nothing happened, the United States would be rocked by social unrest as the classes drifted apart into haves and have-nots.
The majority of our lower and middle class is primarily concerned with pursuing and maintaining financial security. Check out the distribution of wealth, which has become significantly more extreme in recent years.
The dawn of the Fourth Industrial Revolution:
Alvin Toffler in his book Future Shock (1970) posited that “the illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”
The habits we create in school no longer create economic value. We learn to conform and be predictable.
Not only is this the time of automating work and humanizing jobs, but we have plenty of wealth to invest properly in the American people so they can be fully equipped to build the sustainable life of their dreams.
What is evident is that it is time for a revolution of the mandatory education systems.
It is just one of the whole systems changes we need to make to realign ourselves with “reality”.
When children think history exists but on the pages of books, and boring ones at that, how are they supposed to come to perceive various histories as existing now? They are led to think all there is is all that is right in front of them.
Many Americans desire to attend university over community college for the social experience. Imagine, as just an example, how many more opportunities and freedom the youth could have have with regenerative immersive community for college ages, coaches and guides instead of professors, and learning structures helping them to employ the wealth of knowledge on the internet to develop their skills and abilities in the direction of their greatest excitement. This is not a solution for everyone, but we should be in the business of illumination, which means ensuring all answers and solutions are freely available, made accessible, and our people get to feel less like slaves, not only to our systems but to our society and political discourse.
Google Meet Attendance extension is what you need to alphabetize your participants as well as see a minute-by-minute summary of who came in and out of your meeting. I made a video to show how it works and what you can expect to see. Hope it helps!
I went to private school but all my friends went to Publix. I constantly try to stress the advantages of private school vs public but no one listens to me. I know public school is fine for some students but the advantage of private school outweighs the advantages and opportunities of public. Can anyone give a good argument for either one? I’m open to hearing both.
Hi wonderful readers of r/education. Is remote education accessible to everyone?if you are an under-resourced student or their caretaker, please take this 5 min survey to tell us about the challenges you face during remote education.
If you are a teacher teaching under-resourced students, please take this 3 min survey to tell us more about it. This data will be used to procure resources to help out students get the quality education irrespective of their resources.
I’m a parent and teacher trying to wrap my head around parents not only WANTING to send their kids back to classrooms, but trying to FORCE schools to open. I’ve come up with levels/tiers of extreme circumstances, but have no idea how other parents would answer.
At which level would YOU say “no” to sending your child back to school during this pandemic? The administration at your child’s school says:
Level 1: We’ll be meeting in person next week, with full enforcement of social distancing and face masks. There will be no more than 12 students per classroom. Keep in mind, every bathroom visit and walk through doorways increases their exposure. Also, remember that kids are terrible at wearing masks, but we’ll do our best. Temperature will be taken every morning for all students.
Level 2: We’ll be meeting in person next week, with full enforcement of wearing face masks. There will be no more than 24 students per classroom. Keep in mind, every bathroom visit and walk through doorways increases their exposure. Also, remember that kids are terrible at wearing masks, but we’ll do what we can. Temperature will be taken each morning for at-risk students.
Level 3: We’ll be meeting in person next week and we’ll try to have everyone wear face masks properly (but we love having our noses out, so that’s fine). There will be no more than 24 students per classroom. Keep in mind, every bathroom visit and walk through doorways increases their exposure. Also, remember that kids are terrible at wearing masks, but we’ll do what we can.
Level 4: We’ll be meeting in person next week, with optional face masks. There will be about 30 students per classroom, since some teachers aren’t “able” to teach in person. Students will need to sit together to fit in the limited space we have.
Level 5: We’ll be meeting in person next week, with optional face masks. There will be about 40 students per classroom, since some teachers aren’t “able” to teach in person. Students will need to sit together to fit in the limited space, and when speaking, must remove their mask so everyone can hear (we hate how it MUFFLES our voices!)
Level 6: We’ll be meeting in person next week, with optional face masks for those who think they need them. There will be about 60 students per classroom, since some teachers aren’t “able” to teach in person. Students will need to sit together to fit in the limited space and masks are not allowed in class, since we want to hear clearly from everyone and don’t want them messing with masks.
Level 7: We’ll be meeting in person next week, finally! There will be about 60-80 students per classroom, since some teachers aren’t “able” to teach in person. Students will need to sit together to fit in the cramped space. We are out of soap and the janitorial company is coming once per week. Hope it’s enough!
Level 8: We’ll be meeting in person next week, at last! Face masks will not be tolerated. There will be about 100 students per classroom, since some teachers aren’t “able” to teach in person. Students will need to stand together to fit in the limited space. There should be enough space to move...barely.
Level 9: We’ll be meeting in person next week, at last! Face masks will not be tolerated. There will be about 100-200 students per classroom, since some teachers aren’t “able” to teach in person. Students will need to stand together to fit in the limited space. We plan on using a megaphone to be able to address everyone. The entire office staff has tested positive, but they’ll “tough it out” and greet everyone at their cars! Hugs encouraged! We miss everyone so much, we’re even providing a finger food buffet for all families to come at noon and enjoy each other’s company. Hopefully The Johnson family can make it (we were just notified that they ALL tested positive...can you imagine, a family of 20 all got it!?!)
Level 10: I don’t care about my kids. I’m sending them no matter what.

John Holt legendary educator gives his opinion on how schools can be improved in one sentence.
Hey! I don't know if there is anybody out there studying for AIISH lol. If someone is studying for the exam coming up on October 5,2020. I would you to share some tips and maybe I don't know something lol. I would really love to connect with you.
Does this seem to cover all the bases?
Now, I understand that this strategy might not be the most effective if everybody does it, but I am rather confident that if some small body of people did, it would have immense benefits for them. In fact, even if everyone did it, it would still have a net positive effect I think. I am biased because I play a lot of games and do quite a bit of programming. The biggest bottleneck in my life is insufficient understanding of math. But this also makes me notice people around me who could live their own lives much better if they had spent more time with math...and there is A LOT of people in this bucket.
The reason why I was thinking about this, is because my life would be no different or biased towards better if I had done so. But I am too biased to understand/think of the pitfalls.
There is a lot of bloatware classes at school like history, literature, art, art history(jea, I spent 2 years learning about art history 11,12th grade, what is that about. Clearly it must be something most future employers put as a requirement on job offers), foreign languages, woodwork, PE and countless others.
To take chemistry or physics classes you need a very solid base in math, and many students don't, so they are essentially wasting their time. The basics concepts are not something you need to study, you can just show a few hour documentary and boom done. People are very good at remembering concepts. The hard bit is understanding how things work in as much detail as possible and that is where people struggle because for that you actually need to know math like your first language. Otherwise I suggest your time is better spent learning something else or getting good at the basics instead of wasting your time learning something that is out of your scope at the moment.
I take a lot of shit suggesting that in our modern society those people with only math background might actually have a big advantage. I know it is an extreme example but it is just a thought experiment. People have hobbies and learn stuff outside of the system anyway and the best realize that is what they have to do anyway to achieve competitive advantage.
Simply put, if I apply for a job and I mention that I spent 10 years learning history at school, it is not really getting me closer to getting hired.(I understand there are exceptions, but I suggest those jobs require bachelor or master level instead of the basic crap you stuff your head with in high school) However, if I had reverted that time towards doing my math homework, I can guarantee that my employability would be no doubt higher with added bonus of higher pay too. If this would be true for me, I suggest that it might be true universally.
I don’t really know if anyone cares, but an update on my last post I talked with a member of the school board and they said the kids can’t be in school because the building basically suck for a lack of better term. The ventilation in the buildings do not produce enough airflow circulation to keep the kids safe thus exposing them to a potential virus outbreak even more. So what the building ever really safe in the first place? I have so many questions these school have really been well below standards so what have they been spending money on? I was invited to talk in front of the entire school board so I am now collecting data on budgets for the school etc to hopefully propose a hybrid plan or at the least change the software the school uses and change the schedule so kids are in front of a screen with their teachers for 6.5 hours.
How hard is to deal with phones in class and do you think that schools should be more strict on the matter?
Hey guys!! I'm super interested in what fun/creative ice breakers you do with students. As a university student, I know that they can get super redundant when every teacher does the same (name, year, major, fun fact) format. So I'm really curious if you have any other creative ways to get everyone comfortable and acquainted with each other!
Hello,
Long story short, I was wondering if you are able to get your superintendent's license without having a principal's license in Wisconsin? Is it still recommended to become a principal before looking at a superintendent or can you work as an admin and get promoted?
We’ve decided to make a larger list of courses related to AI, CS, and Programming from the Ivy League. The Ivy League has the best courses in the world, and we feel that free courses from this caliber can help you a lot. Read more at: https://laconicml.com/ivy-league-universities-courses/
Hello, I have an assignment coming up and I have to interview various educators in my field of study which is mathematics. I think it would be great for me to interview people from around the United States (or any country that is). I will ask at least seven open-ended questions. We can call through zoom, Skype, phone, or you can reply to the questions through email or through the messaging system here. If anyone is interested please let me know, thank you so much.
This is my 5th year teaching and I've been contemplating going for my Ed.D for the last couple of years. Some background - I have my master's in education already, and want to work in science curriculum development at the district and/or state level + possibly teach science education classes at the community college or state university level.
I've found a program that's at a state school (so cheaper), but also allows me to teach full time. I'm seeking advice on whether my letter of rec options sound promising and if anyone has advice on drafting their own LOR per my professor's request.
My LORs will be from my current principal, my department chair, and my former professor who currently teaches at the school I'm applying to. Would love any guidance from people who have applied for EdD programs. Thanks!
This year I was assigned to work as an “eSchool Proctor.” I was originally hired as a para and had a one-on-one student for years before this. I now oversee 6 periods (approx. 20 students each class). I have my own classroom and I don’t work with any other adult. Our school has an hour lunch for students. During that time, I take my half hour (unpaid lunch) and the other half I work as a hall monitor/security wrangling up stray kids. I don’t get a 15 minute break (that I am pretty sure I am supposed to have). In class...I am taking roll, enrolling the students in the county’s eSchool and FLVS courses, teaching the students how to navigate virtual school, teaching how to upload assignments, filling out assessments on students with IEPs, communicating with the guidance counselors, and the list goes on & on. I am enjoying the fact that I get to use my brain & computer skills. On the downside, I am still getting paid as a para. I was told that “paras oversee eSchool in our county.” Is this the norm elsewhere? Also, the pay scale here is sad. I make around $13 an hour and I get 6 paid hours a day. I can’t even afford to add my kid to my health insurance. I wouldn’t have a check left. Is anyone else in this position?
(not sure if the right sub to post this)
I want to simply make this post just to educate girls how to do this because I didn't know how to because people didn't tell me and I had to find out what works for me! c:
First off water is just not going to cut it okay a lot of people say just use water and you will be fine you have to do a lot more than that lol!
First: Get some soap on ur rag and only wipe the LIPS of ur kitty NEVER get soap INSIDE ur vagina that a NO NO !
Second: Make sure your getting water in ur vagina so its all wet now take a different rag or just wipe all the soap off the rag completely and put the rag in one finger so Ur getting in there! Then begin to wipe gently in ur vagina and make sure ur getting the inside of the lips also! so everywhere
Tips/advice; ( When wiping the inside of ur lips make sure ur going up then wiping down ) to get all that cum or anything that hiding in the lips !!! that could be making ur vagina smell.
You NEED to be eating healthy foods and drinking LOTS of water a cup a day and even more thats really going to make you have a great smelling kitty and healthy !
Also do not think ur vagina is going to or needs to smell like strawberry's and all this other stuff no its supposed to have a nature smell not a funky or strong smell but nature !
If ur sleeping with someone you need to make sure there washing there privates!! Because one your going to get affections and a whole bunch of other stuff thats going to make ur vagina smell .
Artificial Intelligence in education is more than science fiction. AI is a major influence on the state of education today and has the potential to transform how our education system operates, increase the competitiveness of institutions, and empower teachers and learners of all abilities and backgrounds. In a recent study commissioned by Microsoft, 99.4% of educators said AI would be instrumental to their institution’s competitiveness within the next three years, with 15% calling it a “game-changer”. Nearly all are trying to work with it too, as 92% said that they have started to experiment with the technology. Unleashing the power of AI in the education industry can transform the way students learn, and fill gaps in learning and teaching that allow schools and teachers to do more than ever before.
Just weeks into the new year all the parents were informed that the IT program was being cancelled and the children will be forced to move to other programs the children have no interest in. The current teacher has been in the program for 20 years and had no idea the program was being cut. He did have issues going back to school in the hybrid program but has communicated with administration that he can go back in. The school is all virtual now and plans to go hybrid on 10/5. The administration claims they must cut the program due to in person staffing problems. They say the program isn’t big enough to hire a sub for in person. 13 children currently enrolled in the program. The VTHS is about 300 students with a large percentage in the medical field. The families are shocked that the school is forcing all the students to go into different programs they have no interest in. Some programs the offered us was auto mechanics, graphic design, law and public safety, cosmetology. No my computer geek kid does not want to become a police officer or a hair stylist, thank you very much. Meanwhile the administration is lying saying they have not been in contact with the teacher even though they were emailing him last Friday. What can parents do? We are emailing County Freeholders, Board of Ed. Writing emails to the superintendent to not cancel the program and to work with the teacher. They are ignoring us. I think they just want this teacher out for some unknown reason and are using the pandemic as an excuse. The administration’s latest spin is they are closing the program for the year to revamp it and start new next year. So they are throwing away a year of every student’s education in order to find a way to fire this teacher? There are second and third year students that love the program that are now being forced to take a year off. Who knows if this promise to restart this program next year is even true. I am a parent and I’m asking the hive mind here for any advice. Thinking of going to the press. Ironic how the program to be cut is IT which is the industry that is keeping our society together in this pandemic.
So I am new employee at a junior high school. I wanted to ask the online community on how they handle students that talk about menstration. I saw an interaction today in which a male teacher became very angry and threatened detention for two girls talking about their periods. I'm just not sure if he overreacted? and if that topic should be met with a zero tolerance? Maybe its generational but I always thought that periods should be normalized. BUT because I'm new to education, I don't know the appropriate talk line.

Hello all, wondering if you can help me...in my previous school a colleague used a website that allowed teachers to upload student work (essays, short stories, poems, etc) and the program would then show students two at a time asking them to choose on their device which they thought was better. After progressing through all the pieces of work the teacher could see which scored highest and then the class could discuss what made those pieces the best.
It seemed like a great way to get student to think critically about the quality of work and was kind of fun. Anyone familiar with it or know what it is called?

School Definition: Being surrounded by people I feel nothing for for 7hrs a day whilst being mentally tortured with useless information whilst being physically tortured by uncomfortable clothing whilst simultaneously being subjugated to a myriad of meaningless and overly enforced rules that in the end create the aura of an unthinkably nazi-resembling prison experience, oh and it starts at 4 and ends at 18 but if we managed to fuck you up enough we will trick you into paying thousands to continue the pain and suffering for up to another 10 years and continue a waisted life on a chair at a desk answering the calls of other equally dead mind controlled idiots.
Hey everyone. Is anyone reading this an administrator, Pricipal, or Asst. Principal for a public school district? I'm working on a product that serves public schools and would love to get the opinion of anyone who fits that mold.
I have no product and am not selling anything, really just looking for some insight and meaningful dialogue. I've talked to several people I've met on Twitter and wanted to reach out here as well.
For context, I'm looking to have a conversation about what public schools are doing about career prep for students and where/how there might be space for that in your school.
If anyone is interested let me know and I can reach out!
