Chitralekha, a former reader in Sanskrit at the Victoria Institution in Rajbazar, has so far donated over Rs 97 lakh for educational and charitable purposes.
Chitralekha Malik lives in a modest 350 sq ft house in Bahuati area of West Bengal. Retired as a teacher. A person who worked in Kolkata now gets a monthly pension of only 50,000 rupees.
Don’t live in luxury for that. Travel by bus wherever you go. Walking if not that too. There are no employees to look after the housework. She lives alone because she is not married.
She has thrift as her life's ambition and gets a lot of pensions on hand. At the same time the cost is low. So saves a considerable amount per month. What is Chitralekha doing with this huge savings?
In 1994, an accident left her left leg shorter than her right one, forcing her to walk with a limp. But that has not diminished her courage. Despite the physical constraint, the septuagenarian travels long distances within the city by bus said an official of Jadavpur University.
“She came to the university before Durga Puja for a courtesy briefing on what we intend to do with the fund she had given to institute a research scholarship in the name of her teacher, the late Pandit Bidhubhusan Bhattacharya. She traveled all the way from her Baguiati home to the university in a bus,” said a JU official.
"Proper education will change everyone. I am confident that a responsible teacher can change anything. I am 80 years old. I have donated over one crore rupees to many educational institutions for the last 19 years since 2002. All this was made possible by my pension money and saving it sparingly," says Chitralekha.
Chitralekha was born the daughter of a school teacher from a poor family. "Practice giving to others ... you will feel happy and content ..." Dad raised his daughter from an early age. From an early age, Chitralekha began to help her fellow students by narrowing down her needs.
