Submission statement: The low difficulty/high complexity task is an activity that is easy to learn but rich in learning. Based on John Hattie’s Difficulty and Complexity Matrix (Visible Learning for Mathematics, 2016), these strategic thinking tasks require students to make decisions and solve problems.
Personally, I love these types of tasks in my classroom because they take minimal time for students to understand and involve students in complex thinking for a long period of time. Engagement is typically higher and learning seems to occur without students realising.
I have recently developed a number of animated video lessons with this low difficulty/high complexity model in mind. Each video has a standalone task that students can complete after viewing. I hope you might find these useful in whatever role you are currently working.
- Can you solve this mathematical Password Puzzle?
- Have you tried the Number Plate Spelling Challenge?
- Can you solve the Four Fours Challenge?
- Let's explore the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)
What is your "go to" low difficulty/high complexity task?
