What is the best solution(s) that you've found to the problem of grades?

I believe I should premise this with the way I understand grading. Grades set out to accomplish the impossible. Try to think of a perfect evaluation system. It would be able to tap into exactly what you know. What is in your head would materialize in some form external to your mind. The grader would then look at the material you present and assign an appropriate grade to it. They would actually be able to bind the vastness of one’s understanding to a symbol.

But we run into several problems along the way right?

  1. You don’t know what you know perfectly.

  2. Even if you know what you know, you can’t present it perfectly outside of yourself.

  3. Even if you knew how to do perfectly present what you know outside of yourself, the grader would need an evaluation system which could encapsulate all of that information inside of a grading scheme.

There are additional problems, but to summarize - the problem of grades is that they cannot encapsulate the understanding of a subject by a student.

I would appreciate any discourse and especially any further readings.
