Weird quiz marking.

So I got my quiz results and I was disappointed. I got 7/20 marks. When I counted back I got 14/20. My total marks got deducted by -13.

Teachers Sharing the Learning Experience with Students

Hi all,

I have recently been doing some research on the most effective ways to educate. I explored the idea of learning through conversation, aka walking students through step by step and helping them come to their own conclusions. This, in turn, makes these students better learners and more equipped to take on their life.

The article uses a few studies as proof and uses the Socratic method as the primary example.

I hope this is relevant and useful to you all!

What English words do you think will become common in 2030?

I've been asked to put together a lesson for advanced high school ESL students that discusses the future of the English language. They're interested in learning about what words that are perhaps not so common today will be frequently used in 2030. I imagine they'd correlate with certain emerging domains, such as AI, e-sports, and personalized medicine, but I think loan words that are gaining traction would interest them as well.

Can I get my masters in Psychology with a B GPA?

I live in Toronto. I have a 3.0 (B) GPA. I really want to get my masters in psychology (counselling) or anything related.

In the Greater Toronto Area, some schools have a minimum requirement of a 3.0 GPA for admission, but because it is very competitive, you usually need a 4.0.

I am now looking outside the Toronto Area to get my masters degree. Does anyone recommend any online programs in Canada or the US?

Awesome Ed-Tech Tool

I wanted to recommend this free ed-tech tool I have been using this year. Lesson planning use to be my most overwhelming task as I am not the most proactive person. Tailor Ed has really upgraded my lesson plans . I started using it after it was recommended for creating exit tickets. The resource library customizes lesson plans based on your students’ assessments and it’s been super helpful for me. The link is above if you want to check it out, free for teachers.

What do you do if you had a professor with a personal vendetta?

Highly unusual, I know, but this professor was mental. I had written a poem about times I got bullied in the past as a coping mechanism and this girl in the class thought the poem was about her (she was a narcissist and bullied me in the first week of school but the poem wasn't about her). She marched up to the professor and the professor, my God, was triggered. He constantly asserted that I wrote a poem about a another student, ran down everything I had to say, and didn't even calm down when I said "It'll never happen again." He also informed me the poem violated a student code of conduct. Later I said I wanted to drop the class so he got further triggered and escalated the issue to the department chair. She called me and told me later she didn't understand why the professor was so upset, and he strongly and aggressively told her I " deliberately wrote a poem about another student." I called the student code of conduct office and the guy there said "even if the poem was about a student there were no codes violated, and he knows the professor will never take this to the student code of conduct office."

The professor's narcissistic behavior had a huge impact on my mental health and I was able to drop the class because of it. I've told a lot of people and they all said this was the professor's fault. I just can't believe professors like him exist. I was doing well in his class, I had an A+ but it really looks like the professor was jealous of my capabilities and the fact I was the only one who took notes in class during lectures lol. It just feels hard to move on from this.

is doing master easier for major than others?

Hey , iam engineering student and iam thinking to switch to business administration so iam thinking to do master after my graduation and i have some questions:

1- is doing master easier for major than others? Like engineering major would be easier to do master than business administration ( iam still debating what would my master focus on.. iam asking in general)

  • for the first question iam asking this to see how they review applications and universities mindsets how they view majors

2- do i have to get high gpa like 3 or higher or it doesn't matter? Or it depends on the university requirements

3- do i have to have work experiences before doing master?

4- if iam trying to get master scholarship does my gpa would effect?

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but I'm hoping to get some guidance.

No one in my family has ever gone to university, and I have no idea how to go about it..lol

I'm 26 and a single parent, and I'd like to go to school. I have no idea how any of it works, and I don't know how I can pull it off as a single parent with a mortgage and little support.

Looking to connect with anyone who has experienced a similar situation, or anyone that can give me some advice. Thanks friends!

What can we do for first generation girls students

In a class of a public school in the capital of Nepal, 25 out of the 29 girls are first generation students who parent/s have not gone to school.

These students face problems related to school work, guidance for coursework, support for finding paths, higher education and career planning. First time students need support at various stages as most often the immediate family and peers don’t necessarily have experience and knowledge to provide guidance as they have not pursued education before.

Looking for possible ideas of what we can do for them.

How education could look like in the future

Currently, education takes place in atomizing classrooms, where students are discouraged from interacting with one another and all of the focus is put on the teacher, who downloads information to the students, so they can regurgitate that information back up on a test.

Every child is required to go through the same series of subjects, and a student's performance & success is measured only by how much content they can remember from their various subjects.

This is highly unnatural and unappealing to students as they have no autonomy or agency over their studies, and because real learning occurs through hands-on experience and trial-and-error, not by listening to lectures from others.

It is also in their nature to want to interact, collaborate, and have fun with one another.

A different approach

The future of education could look like a place not where kids are forced to learn anything, but instead, a place they come to be guided through their innate developmental process.

Where success & performance is based on their ability to collaborate, communicate, think critically, and have creative ideas.

Where classrooms are centered on the student, not the teacher.

Where kids' nature isn't repressed but encouraged, in an environment that engages their curiosity and feels natural.

Where kids can grow at their own pace.

Where they can discover their passions.

But most importantly, where students can feel like they are spending their time and energy meaningfully.

Very open to discussion, so feel free to dm me!

School protesting in your country

Hello friends I am a 20 years old biology student from Greece and I came here after I started wondering about student protesting in all levels in education ,I would like to learn and discuss about the topic so please give me your opinion :-)

So here in Greece junior high school and high school students often use chains to lock up the school doors for one or more days to protest against a list of things. We give the list to the teachers, we hold a vote where the majority decides if the school should be closed or not and we stay out of the gates preventing the cutting of the chains during school hours (schedule watch teams). This is semi legal and the police are brought to the scene, basically it's not a law in any book but citizens respect it. In universities where the students are adults there are actual laws to protect their protests.

Cons / Pros Sadly nowadays it is mostly used as an excuse for not taking classes and a negotiation takes place between the student council (15 people) and the teachers, if the students overdo it some trips may be cancelled or some events. But if a true problem arises it actually works! For example when the government tried to bring back school uniforms these protests didn't let them. In universities on the other hand this happens only for serious reasons ,but universities are very politically active ,just like they are in the rest of Europe, so not everyone agrees with a reason for a protest.

In any case , I was wondering if this practice takes place in any of your countries and if you think it should. I would love to read your replies :-)

Student loan forgiveness

I have been planning to go back and get my Masters. I am currently a SPED teacher, and want to get my Masters in Spec Ed so I can be a Spec Ed director. I’ve been looking into Biden’s Loan Forgiveness program and didn’t realize that it would apply to loans for grad school. I think that the loan forgiveness program will eventually go through. Assuming that it does, would now be the time to go back so that at least a portion of my grad school could be forgiven? Not looking for a political discourse on the opinion of whether loans should be forgiven, just a teacher, who is also a single mom, trying to justify that debt thinking that this might be the way to lighten that debt a little.

I am a consistent A- to A grade student, how can I get myself to a consistent A+ level?

Title. I am a comfortable A grade student. I generally get Straight A’s at a Year 10 level. But the issue is that I only get A’s to A-‘s consistently, rarely A+’s. I want to reach the level of a consistent A+ before I start Year 11. But the question is how. I study well, I ask for feedback numerous times before the submission of an assessment, I spend hours studying and perfecting an assessment before submission and yet I still don’t achieve that miraculous A+. What am I doing wrong? What am I lacking? Do I need to put more effort into an assessment? What else could I possibly do?

Who is correct? Teaches or internet??

I am a parent of a 12-year-old. We were talking about climate change at dinner (don’t know why). And my kid said, “If you say humans are the main cause of gas on earth, Mr. XXX (his science teacher) will hit you (not literally), because Volcanos emit more gas than humans” Really? That didn’t sit right with me and I googled. I found several references on internet that says this is incorrect. But, the teachers are teachers; would they teach kids incorrect information? Maybe his information is the latest. How much can I trust the information I find on the internet? When you really want to fact-check, where can I turn to?? Any thoughts are appreciated.

You can't learn a concept deeply when you're neither interested in it, nor see a need for learning it.

This is the biggest blunder of the current educational system.

When a students asks the very common question of "why am i learning this?" they are usually answered by the likes of "so you can keep your options open", or "to make you into a well rounded adult".

But if a student is neither interested in, nor sees a need for being in any given course, they are only ever going to do the bare minimum to pass that course, so they can forget about it as soon as possible. No deep knowledge of anything is acquired, and everybody's time is wasted.

We need to give students more autonomy over their own studies, let them chart their own path, so they can actually grow, discover their passions, and spend their time & energy meaningfully.

Things need to change.

Colleges greed has ruined education for non-degree seeking students.

I'm in Florida. Trying to find a school for non-degree seeking education, as I am already in a career, and am simply looking to further my education in certain fields to accomplish personal goals around education. While growing up, my learning was not particularly classroom oriented. I was in computer science and started at a young age, so by the time I got to college, most of it felt rather useless to me. I took time studying all the necessary math courses I needed to excel in my career and it was not long after dropping out, that I found myself excelling in my field.

In my free time, I'd read philosophy and psychology. My house-hold situation and experience with education growing up was not the best when I was a child, and because so, I'm motivated today, to want to try to impact the lives of my own kids and my community. Now, I am trying to return to school only for a few classes regarding personal passions and business/political goals. I want to be able to take Moral Psychology , Educational Psychology, Cross-Cultural Psychology, childhood development, and a statistics course. I do not care for many of the prerequisites; Intro to psych, Math courses, English courses, Humanities courses, etc. As much of this material is already under my belt through self-education. I chose a cheaper route to education, as I view the price of education to be unfair and not worth its costs...

Back in the day, probably 8 years or so ago, I used to be able to go to my local community college and pay $40 for an unaccredited, ungraded audit. Meaning, I could sit in on lectures, but none of my work would be reviewed by professors, and I would not receive a credit for the course. Many students in colleges used to use course auditing to sit in on lectures for things they wanted to learn, but didn't need the actual credit for, the price of audits would be fair.

After calling around to all my state colleges and local community colleges, I find out that every college in the state is now charging the full price of the course, credited or not, for an audit. I'm told this has to do with the fact I'd be taking up a seat, even though there is a surplus in seats for these courses. In addition, I'd still have to take all the prerequisites, whether or not I'm a degree seeking student (which back in the day, this was not the case). I asked each college, "Why would I pay full price to audit, when I can just receive a credit for the same price? And still have to take all the requirements for the course?" After discussing with the Academic advisors, I conclude, that there is absolutely no reason whatsoever anyone should be taking course auditing over credited courses. There's absolutely no benefit anymore, because colleges seem to want to milk as much money out of anyone seeking education as possible. And alternative education, is no longer an option.

If you're required to take prerequisites, even in an audit, it means, you can't save money just auditing to sit in on the lectures of the courses that you want. If you're paying the same price, but getting more value out of receiving a credit and having a professor grade your work, why not just pay for the credited course? It seems to me that colleges have some sort of mandate through the state to offer course auditing, but have no regulations on what is acceptable in pricing and required of students to audit. This seems very greedy, and intentionally unfair to persuade individuals from auditing in the first place... Am I the only one who has an issue with this and thinks this is absolutely crazy? What can be done about this? Do I have alternatives?

I feel so useless as a ST

I’m starting to take lead with teaching more subjects in my mentor teacher’s class. I feel defeated and discouraged with the outcome of my experience so far. The field of teaching isn’t for me at all. I am absolutely terrible when it comes to explaining things and am better at showing and writing things than elaborating in depth.

My mentor teacher has been very patient, kind and helpful. The students are great too and the classroom management is just fine. She observes while i teach, and notices when I’m stumped or need help explaining, she jumps in to help and explain things better for the students to get a better understanding. I just feel so pathetic because I’m supposed to be the one controlling and fully running the classroom. As much as I enjoy and like the extra help, I can’t help but think that whatever I’m teaching isn’t good enough. I have less than 4 weeks left and this torture is over. All the assignments required for my placement are graded and my advisor feels that I do a great job when she observes my lessons. It’s just the teaching itself that I struggle with. I just wish I was a better speaker and wasn’t so overly anxious. I’d have a much easier experience than I’m having right now. I’m just counting down the days and minutes until this torture is over. I hate feeling like what I’m doing isn’t good enough.

I cant quit now as I’m am just a month away from receiving my masters. I’m trying my best to stay strong and keep pushing, and figure out where I want to branch out with my degree. I love working with kids, just not as a school teacher. Any help, advice or words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated.

Superintendent making my wife start work 3 hours earlier

My wife works for our school’s Human Resources office. She starts her work day at 8 AM and works until 4:30 PM. It has been like this since she started for 4 years. This year is our superintendents first year employed at her school, it is also her first time ever being a superintendent. Her and my wife didn’t exactly hit it off. She’s tried to make a lot of “unnecessary” changes. They’ve clashed a few times but nothing serious.

Our school uses an outside company to assign subs daily, our school has done this since before my wife was there. This superintendent is getting rid of them to save money and was planning on hiring a person to do this job. She then decided that would be too expensive and could give this responsibility to a current employee.

Today my wife was was told by this superintendent to make a list of her responsibilities daily weekly and monthly. She will then determine if she will give this responsibility to my wife with no increase in pay. She has not asked anyone else in the district to do the same so my wife is certain it will be put on her. If she decides to do this my wife will have to be at work at 5 in the morning instead of her usual start time of 8.

Now not only is my wife not a fan of working early, it’s also not doable for us. I start work at 5:30 AM and we have a nearly 2 year old. Our day care doesn’t accept kids until 6:30.

I guess I’m just wondering if our superintendent can do that? My wife is a contract employee and works year round if that matters.

I’m apologizing in advance for any layout issues and generally explaining the situation. I hear this all second hand, i can do my best to explain further if needed.

I feel a big gap in my education. What are some essential pieces of knowledge/concepts/ideas that I should know about by the end of college?

I’m in college to be an English teacher, and sometimes I feel really dumb compared to my peers. I want to have a more comprehensive education of the world around me, but years of mental illness have caused a gap in my education. For example, (please no judgment), I just learned this year what fascism is. In order to be a teacher I need to know a lot more about the world. What concepts/ideas/perspectives/areas of study/essential pieces of knowledge should I learn more about in my personal time in order to feel confident in my knowledge about the world? Even things that may be obvious are welcome. Not sure if this is the right subreddit for this but any help is highly appreciated!

Was it fair I was kicked out of clsss for this?

I was booted because in a conversation about race, I said racism goes both ways. I shared that I, as a black man, have been judged because I’ve been with a white girl for 3 years now. I get called coon, sellout, and a lame for not dating black girls. I said that whenever I hear that talk from a black girl, it proves my point of why I’m with a white girlfriend. I was sent home for the day, but my parents said it’s fine because I told the truth from my perspective. I’m suspended until after Thanksgiving break. Was I wrong to say that?

2nd Grade MAP scores

Hi all,

Had a quick question. Is it possible for a child to be “gifted” in one area specifically? The last couple of years her school has used STAR. On her STARs she has always scored in the 99th percentile for Language/Reading. This year they switched to MAP and she scored a 219 on Language and 202 on Reading. Math was 197. She was pulled yesterday for differentiated math and said it was very hard and didn’t understand it. I’m just not sure what (if anything) to make of these scores. Thanks in advance.

What do in major in?

This question might be obvious but l'm in my first semester of college right now and I'm not too sure about all the different majors. I kinda rushed into college and didn't have any idea what I wanted to do, so I picked psychology out of panic lol. I do have an interest in psychology, but l've been thinking about teaching English abroad for awhile now, and I think it's a better fit for me. The program l'll be in for teaching abroad requires any bachelors degree (it doesn't matter which one), but out of preference I want a degree that will best prepare me for this job. I'll be working with younger kids (elementary age), and I'm confused on what to major in. Since I'll be teaching English, do I major in English/English studies or Liberal Studies? Any feedback is appreciated

A-Level or AP?

I wasn't sure which subreddit to post this in, if there is another subreddit that would better suit my question, please direct me towards it.

(I don't live in the UK, US or Canada)

I attend a British curriculum school, and am interested in pursuing Neuroscience. I've taken English, Psychology, Maths and Biology for my A-Levels, but the school is requesting that I drop A-Level Maths since my GCSE marks in Maths were low (high 7 and the school requires an 8). I do find Maths slightly difficult, but I feel that it would be beneficial towards a career in Neuroscience if I were to take Maths. We are allowed to do APs out of school.

Would it still contribute towards university if I were to drop A-Level Math and take AP statistics instead? Would universities/ careers count it? I have not really fixed on a particular university or country to attend, but would like to keep my options open. Are there any other options I can consider?

Thanks in advance.

Teaching Sabbatical Opportunity

My wife is a second grade teacher at small private school in the Southeastern United States. Her school offers a "mini-sabbatical" during the summer months for teachers to visit other schools either within the USA or globally for a week or two. The point is to visit other schools that are known for their unique teaching style or programs so that she may learn something new or bring back a new curriculum to her school. A great example within the USA of what she is looking for is the Ron Clark School in Atlanta.

She wants to take advantage of this, but is having trouble finding other schools to visit... what are some schools (hopefully international) that she can go visit? TIA!

this is keeping me up at night

My university is not prestigious but I got into many prestigious universities in Australia.

Everyday I'm back at uni, I keep getting a reminder that I'm at a university that is not prestigious.

It makes me feel bad for some reason. I only have another year to go, and i have final exams for this semester.

I feel like graduating from my university Charles Darwin University, is not going to look good on paper or anywhere else. I'm doing law there and already have a psych degree. Might I add I'm 27 years old now and am just too old for learning at university, I'm at the working age. All my friends are already working as graduates from university.

I must be behind

When it comes to looking at education systems, has anyone felt a discrepancy between data/statistics and lived experiences?

For context, I am a teacher in Canada but have family in Eastern Europe and generally consider myself well-travelled.

I look at PISA scores for Canada and the country seems to be doing well overall (in the top 5/6 in various categories). It is higher than some European countries.

However, my lived experience shows me that Canada does not have a strong education system and, despite research to the contrary, the decisions made by Ministries of Education have been harmful. Speaking with my family in Europe and with friends from other countries, I find they are engaging with much more difficult content than Canadians of the same age and generally show a greater amount of knowledge on different topics. Students I teach that are new immigrants are also more successful, on average, than the students who are born and raised in Canada. This indicates to me that the education system they grew up in must have some success despite ranking lower on PISA or other assessments.

Am I alone in feeling this way? Is there something that I am missing? Additionally, is there a term that describes the moments research and lived experience seem to conflict?

Has there been a decline in educational institutions between the 19th century and now? mostly concerned with universities.

I am under the impression that since the 19th century, there has been a decline in how knowledge is taught and is treated by students over the world.

When i read biographies of philosophers, scientists, i am always left with the impression that people used to enroll in universities to learn with at least some enthusiasm and rigor and with a clear purpose - to differentiate themselves from the layman by becoming knowledgable about the world and getting a good job. That attitudes were more formal and that knowledge was treated more seriously.

It also seems to me that today, there are many things influencing how people treat systems of education. People have become spoiled in many ways. Schools are widely available and mandatory education in many countries lasts for around 9 years. Universities and colleges have become much more common and a much larger proportion of people have opportunities for enrolling. They are so much more often than not treated as nuisances that noone wants, as obstacles to a happy life and sources of psychological ruin and suffering, on a way to a job that noone likes. Which it actually seems they more often than not are. The attitude towards knowledge from students is not exactly positive and teachers seem to take what they teach for granted - materials that you are supposed to tell so that a student can solve their exam, rather than valuable facts about the world.

And yes, exams - also having to do with what follows - are what butchers education and students' lives to a huge extent. Probably a big source of the problems i am talking about - ruins attitudes, overcasts the actual purpose of education, and probably more things.

The effect of a century in which the world's population has increased by about six billion people and an ever more demanding economy?

Is my impression correct?

What are some valid reasons as to leaving high school early for part time job ?

I have received an option from my counselor to have my last period free because of my job. On the consent form to go through this process, it asks ‘how the student benefits’ from this. I can’t really think of anything other than more time and save money. Any ideas?

PT WFH Job Suggestions

Wondering if anyone has any job leads or ideas for a former educator and stay at home mom. I’d really like to keep my foot in the door and remain in the education field but I have multiple young children so daycare with a teacher salary is basically impossible. I’m passionate about elementary teaching and leading professional development specifically love poetry, social emotional education, social justice, art integration, museum education, and anything generally student led and wonder based. My kids are with me during the daytime hours so remote teaching during school hours isn’t an option!

What is the "feedback problem" in your eyes? (if you think there is one)

So i'm studying feedback design and how that plays into psychology and neuroscience but I'm interested in first hand experiences.
What do you find most challenging about giving feedback to students? Are marking rubrics restrictive to the natural development of trust and communication between teacher and student? Are we all too sensitive now for it to even work anymore? Are grades the goal or the enemy?

I'm interested in what other educators feel when they are given feedback policies or guidelines and how they would go about feedback if they weren't restricted by time and expectation

Recs for educational software that doesn't require internet

I am preloading some computers to bring to a school/orphanage that doesn't have much internet access. I am looking for recs of good software to put on them that can run without internet. Thinking things like "Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing," Encarta, mathblasters... but for the current generation. Any ideas?

Thanks!

IB or STEM?

Hello. I’m an 8th grade student and I’m not sure what path to take when I get into high school, and I’m interested in studying paleontology or archeology. What’s the best course to take in high school-IB or STEM if you want to get into a good college/university and major in a science field?

What is the point of textbook deposits

Just finished my final exams for high school and am in the process of returning my textbooks so that I can get a refund on the textbook deposit. I understand that this deposit serves as monetary collateral, but couldn't schools use the eligibility of a student's graduation as the collateral without paying the deposit? What are the problems with giving out textbooks to students for free?
- In the case of a textbook being lost, the school would charge the student the cost for the textbook + an extra fee.
- If they don't pay this fee, then the student would be ineligible to graduate.
I feel like taking lending deposits from students and then needing to refund them back to students is a hassle for the school. Is there a reason why they do it? Are there some issues with lending textbooks to students for free?

Need advice

As a commerce under graduate, is there anyway I could do a higher education in psychology? Is it a good degree to get?

Ill be honest, I’ve been working in digital marketing for a year and a half and I do not like it. I’ve always wanted to study psychology but my family wasn’t supportive of this. Now that I can finally make my own decisions, I’d really love to complete my higher education in psychology and maybe look at being a therapist or a counsellor and/or a professor.

Please help?

Google Account Profile Picture Issue

We have a school where we have disabled students from changing their Google account profile picture and have the school logo instead, but we're having an issue with students still being able to change their photo.

We disabled user photo change in Gsuite directory settings and we blocked the custom avatar URL.

Does anyone know other alternatives or loopholes that the students might be using to bypass the lock on their profile picture?

Teaching concepts or teaching critical thinking?

It is clear that the education system does not teach people to think. I have condensed in this article based on neuroscience but also on my experience, the reason why your education may be stuck.

My intention is to initiate a constructive but at the same time critical debate with our way of learning.

My uncle wants to send his daughter to a Catholic school in London despite him being an atheist

My uncle (42M) and his girlfriend (44F) want to send my cousin (4F) to a private Catholic school in London despite both of them being atheists. Me and my uncle are from an eastern European country but he lived in England for more than 5 years now. His girlfriend is from China but moved to England when she was 17. They want the best education for their daughter, which I understand, but they want to enrol her in a Catholic school since other private schools are too expensive and according to them she won't have a future if she goes to the state school.

The problem is, they're both atheists and always said my cousin should be able to choose a religion for herself if she wants when she's older. Now they're going to baptize her in our country in December since it's a requirement for this Catholic school.

Is it true what they say about schools in England? That no matter the grades she won't be accepted at any good university after state school? I think they can find really good state schools in London. I'm trying to do my own research but I also never lived there.

Also please excuse my poor English.

What to do when you’re 18 almost 19 and you didn’t go to high school/not much middle school

I know someone else made a post a few days ago asking something like this but as an 18 year old I can’t go back to high school like they can. Also I turn 19 soon and feel like time is slipping away. I don’t want to spend 4-5 years making up my lack of an education. I’m doing a high school homeschool program now but it’s only English, history, and science. The first two I’m fine in, but I’m pretty bad at science. I’m doing several lessons a day to speed things up but it’s still very slow. I’m not even doing math yet as I have a roughly 6th grade level in it.

Would an adult education center or program (preferably online for now) be faster at achieving a diploma or GED than a homeschool program? Like I’ve said I did not go to high school and I only attended middle school for a year at best. The rest was a different homeschool program that wasn’t very good. Any help is appreciated
