Has there been a decline in educational institutions between the 19th century and now? mostly concerned with universities.

I am under the impression that since the 19th century, there has been a decline in how knowledge is taught and is treated by students over the world.

When i read biographies of philosophers, scientists, i am always left with the impression that people used to enroll in universities to learn with at least some enthusiasm and rigor and with a clear purpose - to differentiate themselves from the layman by becoming knowledgable about the world and getting a good job. That attitudes were more formal and that knowledge was treated more seriously.

It also seems to me that today, there are many things influencing how people treat systems of education. People have become spoiled in many ways. Schools are widely available and mandatory education in many countries lasts for around 9 years. Universities and colleges have become much more common and a much larger proportion of people have opportunities for enrolling. They are so much more often than not treated as nuisances that noone wants, as obstacles to a happy life and sources of psychological ruin and suffering, on a way to a job that noone likes. Which it actually seems they more often than not are. The attitude towards knowledge from students is not exactly positive and teachers seem to take what they teach for granted - materials that you are supposed to tell so that a student can solve their exam, rather than valuable facts about the world.

And yes, exams - also having to do with what follows - are what butchers education and students' lives to a huge extent. Probably a big source of the problems i am talking about - ruins attitudes, overcasts the actual purpose of education, and probably more things.

The effect of a century in which the world's population has increased by about six billion people and an ever more demanding economy?

Is my impression correct?
