For context, I am a teacher in Canada but have family in Eastern Europe and generally consider myself well-travelled.
I look at PISA scores for Canada and the country seems to be doing well overall (in the top 5/6 in various categories). It is higher than some European countries.
However, my lived experience shows me that Canada does not have a strong education system and, despite research to the contrary, the decisions made by Ministries of Education have been harmful. Speaking with my family in Europe and with friends from other countries, I find they are engaging with much more difficult content than Canadians of the same age and generally show a greater amount of knowledge on different topics. Students I teach that are new immigrants are also more successful, on average, than the students who are born and raised in Canada. This indicates to me that the education system they grew up in must have some success despite ranking lower on PISA or other assessments.
Am I alone in feeling this way? Is there something that I am missing? Additionally, is there a term that describes the moments research and lived experience seem to conflict?
