I'm a design student with some earlier experience.
I applied to 2 big design schools and 2 small ones(safety) in Europe and also my local uni just for fun during the standard application period, wanting to fulfill my dream of studying abroad. Unfortunately I got rejected from all of them except my local U despite having done well in my previous education (And also having completed a total of like 8 preliminary assignments at this point 🙄)
(Option 1) Its not like my local uni is bad, In fact its actually really good globally, It's just that I'm not too sure how much I can grow here... The uni is mostly local, and my country is small, isolated and not a very "design" advanced city. I also don't really like the local culture and heard the student social life isn't too good. It is however good in a sense that I'd afford it comfortably, and the school has high prestige. No on campus accommodation tho bums me out :/
So I went to a university fair where I found a couple universities in UK still accepting applications.
(Option 2) After all was said and done, I got an offer from both that I applied to, and one of which happened to be where Jony Ives went. If I went here I'd be graduating a year earlier! Problem is that it'll exceed my uni budget by like 20%, It's less prestigious or well known than my local U, and I've heard that they're money hungry - I'll probably struggle considering the time and money doing design requires. I can't tell if it'll be worth it.
(Option 3)The other option allows me to graduate in a year but honestly their rep is even worse having no track record with alumni and no showcase of previous works. Not even sure they have specialized lecturers for my specific course.
My parents say that they'll support wherever I choose to go. But obviously I'd rather not spend all the money 🫠 So now the decision is between me going for broke paying international fees to a uni I find slightly questionable, but fulfilling my study abroad dream, or to stay here, do 4 years for a decent U degree, save a bunch of money in the process and potentially use the money to go traveling.
Yeah its a lot
Tldr: sacrifice location and student life, All my money, or ROI/ rep.
