Quiz platform recommendations

Hello! I'm looking for a website that I can use to create a quiz game, similar to kahoot. But I would like the quiz to run in a similar style to quizarium, where there is a hangman like screen and more and more letters appear over time.

Ideally it should be able to host large groups (200+).

Any recommendations?

For teachers: Best science project you gave?

Hi everyone! I teach biology (and basic chem and physics) to grade school students and I’m looking for more interesting ways to materialize scientific concepts.

I was wondering, what were the coolest science projects that you’ve given your students? Tell me the reactions from your students too! I love to hear science classroom success stories from fellow educators 👩‍🏫 🧑‍🏫👨‍🏫

No matter our circumstances, there is always more we can do to reach out in kindness. Yet often our self-interest blocks the compassion that could lift many burdens. How might we understand our own bias to grow in empathy and care?

Diplomas for sale: $465, no classes required. Inside one of Louisiana’s unapproved schools

Unlike public schools, formal homeschooling programs or traditional private schools, nearly 9,000 private schools in Louisiana don’t need state approval to grant degrees. Nearly every one of those unapproved schools was created to serve a single homeschooling family, but some have buildings, classrooms, teachers and dozens of students.

finishing middle school at 18-19, what should i do?

as title says, i(15F) going to be finishing middle school at 18-19 years old

due to the pandemic i didnt go to school for three years, which was all my middle school years, im currently in the 7th grade and just actually realized this, was having a coversation with some friends and they mentioned id need a scholarship, not sure if it depends but where im from (mexico) but they didnt let me even skip a single year despite my age,

now, my main purpose for this question is the fact that my main life goal is to move to america, looking at san diego, since im more fluent in english than spanish (racially/ethnically fully chinese but nationality wise mexican) and that just to me feels like itd ruin my chances of any scholarship since i cant excell at school cause of it, so now just wondering if there is even anything i can do

some more context for school situation, many reasons facture into why i didnt go for so long but mainly that my old school shut down their middle school, what i was supposed to be advacing onto, next was there wasnt a cure for covid yet, and mainly the fact my mom sees online school as not real school, was originally going to be shoved back in 6th since half my year was online but glad i wasnt,

sorry for the word vomit this whole part of my life genuinely just makes me beyond upset to speak about calmly, but really do want some help, tried to focus on the more like useful information rather my emotions, thanks for reading :)

Do you have any research or papers which prove that the German education system would be better for Canada or the USA?

Any proof (with citation preferably) that the German education system (especially the tiered secondary school) is better would be appreciated.

This is my Holocaust education as an American student

Hi everyone! I hope this fits here. I read recently about the lack of education on the Holocaust in America and I was curious what the average experience has been for people. I’m 25, from Indiana, and went to a private school. If you’re older or younger, went to public school, or are from somewhere else (even outside U.S.), I’m very curious about your educational experience. Here’s a chart I made detailing Holocaust museums, films, and books I’ve experienced throughout my education and I’ve no idea if it’s average or not. Thanks for the input in advance!

Is Critical Thinking, as a class, taught per se in schools anymore?

Do they teach per se Critical Thinking in courses in college or high school anymore? I distinctly remember taking a class at my college called I think exactly that.

I ask because it would surprise me if they still did. Because this society doesn't want critical thinkers. It wants consumers. It wants you to power the messed-up system.
It wants you to be a battery in the Matrix.

Best books to learn the philosophy of knowledge/ science

I am a medical student and I can't help but ask myself a lot of question about life and science. I find that alot of the questions I ask myself stem from a lack of knowledge on the philosophy of knowledge and science itself.

Would appreciate any book recommendations/ authors for me to read. I'm not a very good reader, and my ability to dedicate time to said reading is limited, so more entry-level material would be appreciated.

I'm a returning student (changing careers) and I hate the way that college classes are taught now

*** I realize this experience is unique to my degree and to my college, that my experience isn't universal ***

I'm switching careers because I hate mine (medical field, licensed provider). I did a four year program to get my first degree about a decade ago now, it was a very rigorous program, but I pretty much know my field like the back of my hand at this point. I thought it prepared me incredibly well.

I am now getting my teaching degree. I want out of clinical practice. I'm finding myself more and more agitated with my classes, as everything I have done the last three semesters has been "self-directed education." There's a lot of discussions boards with other students, reacting to activities done in class, choosing what projects to do, what to read, etc.

While I find this all...incredibly easier than more "traditional" teaching, I also find myself constantly agitated and in a lot of ways, weirdly more stressed out. Mostly, I think, because I'm taking out all these students loans and spending time away from my own family and child....to essentially teach myself the class?? What I'm a paying thousands of dollars per semester for, really?

I also feel like my time is largely wasted and like I'm honestly not learning all that much. I realize when I was in public school (in the 90s) it was very far in the opposite direction teaching style wise, but is student-lead learning REALLY that much better?

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change

When we transform limiting perspectives and elevate consciousness, we begin to envision possibilities that once seemed impossible. Self-reflection has power - by questioning the mental patterns behind resistance, empathy arises and divisions fall away. Unity can prevail when we approach life with open, caring minds and hearts.

I need a major that is higher in demand and mirrors the nature of the Humanities as much as possible

I'm planning to double major in Philosophy and something else that is a relatively safe bet in terms of job markets it would allow me to reach into. I'm looking for another major that resembles a humanities course, I want one that can be as theorietical and perspectivist as possible, something that encompasses the humanness and study of humans in humanity. I despise the natural sciences, especially the ones that are the most formulaic and rigid in their thinking and structure (looking at you engineers).

Any reccomendations?

I have a 0.00 GPA. I need help please

So to make a long story short, I graduated high school with a 2.8 GPA. Throughout high school I wasn’t really motivated and kinda hated school. After graduating my parents made me go to a community college. I was doing okay at first but then in October of last year I went through some extremely traumatic things and school no longer became a priority. I completely abandoned school and I feel into a deep depression. I left one day and never went back. We moved across the country this year and I’m in a better mental state and I want to go back to school and get a degree but I just went onto my old school website to see I have a GPA of literally zero….. I would’ve been better off not going to college in the first place. I know I messed up, I know no university is going to accept me but if anyone has any advice for ANYTHING I could do it would be much appreciated :)

Moms for Liberty outreach leader exposed as registered sex offender

A Philadelphia-based outreach leader for Moms for Liberty – the conservative parental rights group that is pushing to exclude discussion of gender and diversity from school curricula – has been exposed as a registered sex offender.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Phillip Fisher Jr – a pastor and local Republican ward leader who volunteered at Moms for Liberty’s national summit in Philadelphia this year – pleaded guilty in 2012 to a charge of aggravated sexual abuse involving a 14-year-old boy when he was 25 and living in Chicago.

Fisher is registered as a sex offender on an Illinois state police list and on the US justice department’s national sex offender website.

Is it strange to do Gymansium (German High School) up to the age of 20 (almost 21)?

During my childhood I moved around a whole lot and also lived in America for a long time. During this time I lost a lot of my German so when I moved back I had trouble re integrating back into school. I am now 18 and am in Year 11. Is it strange for me to be this old at this stage in school? I want to be able to study after so at 21. When do most people start to study in Germany, and is 21 late for that?

Should I do another bachelors after I've already gotten one?

So I've been in this predicament for a few months now. For context, I am located in Ontario Canada. I graduated with a degree in music, but I lost the passion for that field years ago. I've just graduated close to 2 years ago, so I'm 24 now.

I'm currently considering a career in IT or something technology related, but I'm unsure of whether or not taking another 4 year bachelors degree would be needed. My current degree is practically useless other than being a way of saying I've gone through an undergrad. This is especially apparent when I'm thinking about entering a tech field.. with a fine arts degree.

Would it be a waste of time for me to do another bachelors? or should I just take a 2 year diploma and go from there? I'm afraid that taking the latter option would stunt my career growth later on, since I would be competing with CS degrees and the such.

Anyway I can get my diploma in 6 months? Advice needed.

It’s a long shot, and I’ve already been steering towards the GED programs but there’s this feeling in my heart of wanting to walk with my graduation cap and gown to receive my high school diploma.

Long story short: I’ve preferred short term fun over a long term education throughout freshmen and junior year. And I’m a drop out this senior year. I very much regret it. It is my own fault, I agree. Messing around with my own education like that… An education that I should’ve been grateful for.. but my “priorities” were substantially different at 14 compared to 18 year old me.

I came across Penn Foster but the fees are pretty grand. I could manage to save up that amount in 4 months but I’d only have 2 remaining to earn my diploma. If anyone could help that would be appreciated, since I’m already going to apply to get my GED I thought what the heck? Wouldn’t hurt to see the opinions of others.

My mother said if I did take the high school route again, I’d restart as a freshmen and get my diploma around 21, which I honestly do not prefer to do. Sorry to say.

I want to begin college in 2024.

If there is any way at all, please let me know. Or just say there’s no way and to get my GED. I’ve already been humbled time and time again haha..

Thanks anyway!

Approximately 1 in 4 Hispanic students reported frequently or occasionally experiencing discrimination, harassment, disrespect, and feelings of being unsafe

EXCERPT:

“More Hispanic students are seeking educational opportunities after high school, with a notable upswing over the past decade in the percentage of Hispanics earning degrees. But the pandemic brought unfortunate setbacks to Hispanic enrollment, and a new study also reveals other alarming hurdles many Hispanic students face on their educational journeys.

Hispanic students are more likely to feel discriminated against than any other racial or ethnic group, the Lumina Foundation – Gallup State of Higher Education 2022 study found. Approximately 1 in 4 Hispanic students reported frequently or occasionally experiencing discrimination, harassment, disrespect, and feelings of being unsafe.

These distressing statistics underscore an urgent need to improve learning after high school for this fast-growing group of students.

Education must be free from discrimination and harassment. Institutions, policymakers, and communities must work collaboratively to provide a safe and respectful learning environment for all students.

Here are a few ways colleges, universities, and credential programs can address the challenges faced by Hispanic students:

• Strengthen policies for reporting, resolving, and protecting against issues of harassment and discrimination.

• Embrace initiatives aimed at improving diversity and inclusion.”

When is it troublesome that a student cannot write

My ss was evaluated last year for an IEP and found not to need any support, IQ of 100. He is in 8th grade and cannot properly form letters-mixing upper and lowercase in words, structure a sentence, use punctuation or proper grammar. His paragraphs are disjointed. His writing grade was 42 and he failed a sentence structure test. We have known he has issues with written expression for a long time. His has behavioral issues & his punishments have been to write essays on the issue he was punished for to try to get him practice and help. He reads well, above grade level even, but cannot write a book report because he cannot organize his thoughts or summarize anything.
my ss is currently in the middle of a psychological evaluation due to his behavioral issues, including threatening to kill my husband so we have not seen him since June. (Mom fought the evaluation as much as she could until the judge made her lawyer make the appt in his presence). My husband was advised to stay away from his son u til the evaluation is complete because my ss is as tall as his father and an athlete. Mom was on opioids while pregnant with him. They were prescribed by her oncologist for neuropathy. She had been in remission for 4 years before having him. The psychologist thinks this may have contributed to his issues. My sd also has some learning issues with reading. The school evaluated her and said she has issues but figured out coping strategies and wouldn’t help her with any accommodation.

my husband met with his teacher yesterday and the school claims his writing is acceptable and nothing to worry about. Are we overreacting, is the school too lax. We were only out of school for 4th quarter in 2020. They returned in person in 2020 so this is not a Covid issue.

United States educational reform

Schools were originally designed to provide families who could not teach their children (due to lack of education themselves or not having the time) an opportunity for their kids to learn. I don’t believe we have held true to this standard over the years, the education system has become institutionalized through government mandates and instead of providing education it is designed to generate results to increase revenue for the school districts. This can be seen by how much pressure is put on both teachers and students in regards to standardized testing. Standardized testing while not inherently harmful has in my opinion led to the downfall of the educational system. While having a national standard for proficiency in subjects such as math, science, history, and English is not a problem and should be strived for, the way that it has been implemented is the problem. Having a schools funding depend upon these tests leads to having teachers teach in a manner where students are able to regurgitate information instead of applying it. One solution I can think of is instead of having schools districts funding depend so heavily on these tests, we instead provide all schools across the country equal funding and provided extra funding in places that are struggling to meet these standards. The places that are struggling could in turn bring on extra staff and provide better resources for both teachers and students. In order to prevent schools from purposefully failing to meet the standard make the extra funding be for a limited time “you have 2 years to get up to the standard or we will have to reevaluate how the school is running”. This is a double edged sword because what stops parents from removing their students from a school as soon as it falls below the average as well as what happens in places where there are only a handful of schools to pick from. While that proposal would not fix the problem entirely it would relieve a great deal of pressure for schools to excel on the tests. If a school did not have to focus so heavily on the tests it would allow for our educators to teach more about how to apply what is being learned to the working world. For example instead of solely focusing on the algorithms used in algebra you could instead also include sections on real world applications and how it matters. To further illustrate that ideal instead of using the age old example of “Jimmy had x apples he then eat 4 and had 1 left how many apples does he have left” you could instead teach how loans work. For anyone who doesn’t fully understand how algebra and loans are related, your remaining balance on the loan is multiplied by your interest rate and that interest or “x” is added to the remaining balance. This is a real world application of algebra and it would also teach the students valuable information about loans and how they work. This can be applied in many ways, it would be particularly useful in the sciences and mathematical studies. Instead of throwing formulae at students and having them apply it through meaningless questions use the opportunity to teach them things you wish you knew whenever you got out into the workforce.

Furthermore I strongly believe that the way and at what pace the educational systems teaches students is both too slow and needlessly complex. For one as previously mentioned I truly believe that all subjects should attempt to be taught in a manner that would be applicable to real life situations. To stray away from mathematics and use another subject as an example you could use baking bread to teach science. Have students use the scientific method for choosing a recipe for bread and have them explain there hypothesis on how the bread will taste, have them use appropriate chemistry techniques to accurately measure ingredients, and then teach them about chemical and biological reactions going on during each step of the bread making process. This example could be used at all ages depending on how in detail you decide to make the explanations of the chemical reactions but would teach or reinforce the scientific method, biology, and chemistry all while being a fun hands on activity for the students to participate in with real life uses. Instead of only learning about environmental sciences have them build terrariums that mimic our biosphere. There are many ways to include hands on learning with real life ramifications in learning while I do understand that a lot of these examples would either need to be funded by the teachers or parents within the current system why don’t we instead of complaining about how impractical it would be move to making it a reality by changing how the system works. To further compound on an earlier point about how slow the current system teaches, using the aforementioned teaching methods would provide a more baseline understanding for all students to extrapolate from their experiences to understand more complex concepts. If you were using baking to teach science you could use it as an example for teaching the addition of fractions. Such as if you add 2 ½ cups of flour to a bowl how many cups would that be? Using this method could accelerate the pace at which students learn by providing a hands-on approach with fun memories to recall.

Why is the pace at which students are taught such a big deal in the first place? To answer that question I would like to ask one in return. In high school did you know what you wanted to do when you grew up? I for one did not know what I wanted to do. I believe that high school should be completely changed from the ground up but in order to accommodate that you would need to get students to a proficient level in all core subjects by the end of the 9th grade. I believe that high school should be grade 10-12 and should be completely composed of elective classes, meaning that students will pick what classes they want to take and not be forced to take any subject. This will give students 3 years to explore anything that they want to without having to decide whether to go into crippling debt in order to do that at college. I do believe that all of the core subjects should be taught at high school but in a more diverse manner splitting the subjects into their core parts such as biology, chemistry, environmental science ect. Students should be able to choose to take there’s subjects without restriction so if someone is more interested in learning about one over the other they don’t have to take any of the other classes. This probably sounds a lot like college and isn’t that what high school is supposed to imitate? By providing students an opportunity to experience many different subjects in a environment where they don’t have to worry about going into debt or have to work to pay for their classes it would allow them to gain a better understanding of who they are as a person and better understand what it is they would like to do later on in the future. (Also as an aside students should be able to take college 101 classes during senior year at the high school for free).

In turbulent times, self-care is essential.

Small steps - meditation, embracing positivity, enjoying nature, nourishing relationships - can make a big difference for mental health. Prioritizing inner peace allows us to weather storms and spread more light. The greatest change starts from within. What little ways do you practice self-care to maintain balance when things feel chaotic?

Blue skies education in an era of multiple crises

Why is blue skies education or education predicated on current conditions ad infinitium still advocated for in education? Rather than education shifting to consider our non-linear futures and adjust pedagogy accordingly? Why is education for the future being confined to a small cadre of disciplines who are sought to resolve the problems for everybody?

SRL grading system thoughts

Hello, I am a sophomore in high school right now and our school has been working to implement a standards reference grading system, to the chagrin of many of my peers. There is a lot of debate going on right now and the school is going to form a team (including students) to figure out how we will proceed going forward. I think it would be nice to have more information about this system, how it has been implemented at other schools, and things like that from the perspective of educators that this subreddit may offer. Any information or thoughts would be appreciated.

I know there may be some variance how the system works, so this is how it is at my school. Grades are done at a 4 point scale, where 1 is emerging, 2 is approaching, 3 is meets, and 4 exceeds the “standard.” There are various categories for each class, each with their own grade which is the average of all your grades in that category. Your overall grade is the average of those grades.

One thing that I do think is pretty weird is that the most recent assignment is weighted 65% of your overall grade. This is done so that you’re graded by your performance at the end of the class, not the beginning. But 65% seems too much to me..

Classes that implement SRL generally seem to have grades for less assignments overall. Homework is much less likely to be graded, for example. Also, it seems common (though this may not be the case in all classes) that late work has no penalty.

We need a GPA, so the SRL points get converted to letter grades. An A is 3.25 to 4. A B is 2.5 to 3.25. A C is 2 to 2.5. A D is 1.5 to 2

Now here are the criticisms I hear of SRL: People are upset about their grades being lower. Some of our classes have high standards for “exceeding expectations” and it makes it difficult for people to get 4. This upsets them insofar as it gets converted to a letter grade which goes into their GPA. If you meet expectations you are going to get a B, and if you are approaching them you’ll get a C-. The people I hang out with are worried about college admissions (because that’s all that anyone really cares about) since they think their GPA will look bad if they don’t get all “A”s. Now I’m sceptical of this. There is so much variance in how grading is done throughout the country, I feel like colleges must be able to adjust for this. A more difficult school than ours may give out As more sparingly; this certainly shouldn’t hurt those students when it comes to applications. I think if the colleges are smart they should be able to see that we’re using a different grading system, and also look at our class rank to understand that our GPAs are just going to be a bit lower. But if anyone has any information about how colleges actually deal with things like this, that would be very helpful.

The next complaint I hear is that some kids (who maybe have some learning disabilities or something) are having trouble doing well, despite putting in very large amounts of effort. Maybe homework doesn’t need to be graded since it’s just practice, but kids who might not do well on tests often have their grades aided by the completion points on things like homework. Now on the one hand, there’s a part of me that thinks that this is kind of the point of grading. Colleges want to know if a student cannot perform well at school. But of course, effort/participation is another important thing and having that be a part of your grade makes sense. I also think that this may be more a problem with the standards/grade-conversions being too high rather than with SRL itself.

I’ve also heard worries about students losing interest in actually trying at school or going to college if they put in effort and still get what they consider to be low grades. Now that is an issue I can get behind. I think maybe the problem is the conversion from SRL to traditional grades. If there was no conversion and we just said 2, people may be more satisfied. But it seems like there has to be a conversion somewhere to get a GPA. And then that conversion happens and people get discouraged.

Then there’s the issues that arise as we implement the system. The point of SRL is to make things more standardised, but at the moment at our school that seems to be the opposite of the case. Different teachers interpret “exceeds expectations” differently; some think you need to be at a practically unreachable level to get it, others less so. Of course, there are rubrics, but even with the rubrics things are so subjective and “up to the teacher”.

I also have a suspicion that some teachers gave lower scores early on in the year to create an appearance of growth.

I do think SRL makes sense in theory. Percent grading is a little weird when you think about it, and going in terms of standards makes sense. But right now, as we are implementing it in our school, there are a good number of issues. Any insight on this issue would be appreciated!

I can’t charge a reasonable price for my classes, what am I doing wrong?

Hello everyone, I am writing here as my last resource since I have no idea what to do. Long story short, I live in Europe and I have a bachelor’s and a master’s degree - I studied foreign languages. I have more than 6 years of experience teaching English and Italian as my main languages I specialised in. I have over 2000 classes completed on italki for example, so I have some experience in the field. Yet, either online or on in real life, I have to compete with the crazy amount of teachers around, which is technically normal. However, due to this issue, I cannot charge more than 15 USD per hour (which is quite a low rate), or else students will prefer someone cheaper. There is always some cheaper teacher, and if I just try to charge a more reasonable price, I get significantly less students. I have been stuck in this loop for years, but I can see that other teachers are able to charge way more than I do - some of them even have their own online language schools or sell their own language courses. What am I doing wrong? I feel completely lost. Thank you!

Is doing a double degree in mathematics and medical science going to be rough?

Title says it all really.
I am planning on studying an accelerated biomedical science course (transferring into doctor of medicine after), and a mathematics degree (goes into real and complex analysis, topology if I want), and essentially I am just looking to get some opinions of how fucked I could maybe be. Regardless of answer I will still push forward, but I just want to set my sights straight so I don't end up disappointed
with scraping by. Also, the maths degree is just for fun and for learning, not meant to improve career outlook or anything.
Cheers.

I need help in regards to a meeting with our schools administration

I need help in regards to a meeting with our schools administration.

Situation: I'm a highschool student (F17). Our school since adopting a new Assistant Principal of Student Services Department has been really strict on asking students to leave campus if they do NOT have afterschool activities. It's a lot of people stay after school, they do rounds around the tables kicking students out. I'm a student that participates in many extracurriculars which means I have to stay after school. School ends at 3:20 which means most activities start 3:30, this mainly includes clubs. Events such as Choral concerts (I'm part of this) can last from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.

On November 17th, I was waiting around the tables with my friends for club to start (because my friends were going home). The administrator in question asked me and my friends to leave campus. I replied I had club and that we would be leaving at 3:30 when my club starts (me leaving to club and them going home.) The administrator then left coming back within an interval of 2 minutes, to call us to leave another two times. Getting a little more frustrated, I repeated that we would leave at 3:30.

He then proceeded to say "well now you are just disrespecting me and that is grounds for suspension".

This prompted me to head up into the office, and report this situation. However,it was the end of the day and my emotions running high. My counselor advised me to take the Thanksgiving week off, and come back after I've cleared my head for the meeting.

BACK TO THE REASON IM POSTING.

I was wondering if anyone in the sub would give me suggestions about what points to make in regards to the school's policy. I've written an email to the assistant principal in charge of student achievement, because I feel the school is unaccommodating to those who have extracurriculars. My points are that I believe our school strives itself on safety providing us with giant gates and multiple security guards around the school.

  1. Students with extracurriculars should have access to stay inside the school.

Since safety is such a prominent factor why is it that students who have business in the school, for the school, by the school are being told to wait outside the school near the pick up area, and told to come back in when after school activities start?

Why is it during this 10 minute interval of school ending in clubs starting, do we have to wait at the library? Our campus is relatively large with a student population of about 3,600 students. With clubs happening all over the campus, it is inconvenient to wait in the library because it is far from club. I feel waiting by the tables, which is the center of our campus, is a better and more efficient solution.

  1. My second point is in regards to the way that administrator treated me.

I believe the administrator treated me in a reactive manner, instead of a proactive manner. I had felt threatened when he spoke of suspension, and felt conflicted about our schools safety policies. In the email I also wrote how as a senior, I will now think twice about advocating for extracurriculars at our school to underclassmen, because of the under accommodation and anxiety the situation has put on me. The way this administrator treated me also made me feel less proud to represent our school and their extracurriculars.

COUNTER ARGUMENTS:

First off, their main point is for safety students need to stay in an area with supervision. These are the options given.

"You can choose to wait in the library, the library closes at 4:00"

You can wait by the arch, their is supervision there until 4:30"

" You can choose to wait in another teacher's classroom until they leave"

During the short meeting I had when I went into the office, these were the points that were brought up. If anyone could I would like to solidify these statements.

  1. The library is an area for studying. This means it is courtesy to stay silent. It is not an area fit for conversations and group work, because it requires students to stay silent. Another issue is that it closes at 4:00, which means students with events that start later than 4:00 will be kicked out. And again I find it inconvenient that during this 10 minute interval for club, students have to walk to the library, when their club is on the complete other side of campus. I believe again waiting in the center of the campus by the tables is a much better option.

  2. The arch is an area outside the school for students to pick up their children. My first point is it does not make sense to me, supervision or not, that waiting outside the school is safer than inside. The arch area also has no tables. Meaning for students who have to wait a long time, they are unable to do any work unless they sit and work on the concrete floor. Since it is one of two spots that 3,600 students are getting picked up, it is extremely crowded. There's a essentially no spots for sitting, which means students have to stay standing the entire time. People who are just hanging out and waiting for extracurriculars also have a hard time just hanging out with their friends because of how loud and how cramped it is. I do not believe this area is fit for students with extracurriculars to wait.

  3. Number three I think is very simple yet subjective. I feel uncomfortable asking another teacher to use their office our times for something that has nothing to do with them. I feel that it's inappropriate to bring my group of friends over to a teacher's classroom to hang out and talk while waiting for extracurriculars because it has nothing to do with their class and the reason why they are having office hours after school. I also feel it is disrespectful to students who are actively learning there.

Is there anything else that I need to add? Can anyone help strengthen my argument and my points?

If needed I can also post the email that I've sent that delves deeper into this issue.

TLDR: having a meeting with administrative after Thanksgiving break because they are on our asses about clearing campus ( and because they threatened me)

Are CLEP scores recognized in Denmark?

I'm a US citizen looking into the possibility of taking an education in Denmark (for personal reasons). And I'm having a bit of trouble finding info on some things. I plan to call around and talk to some counselors but in the meantime I figured I'd ask here.

I only have a GED as I didn't finish high school. I'm aware this makes things difficult but from what I've read generally universities (When it comes to GEDs) look for either a year of college studies or 3+ AP tests related to the degree I'd study.

Seeing as I'm out of high school obviously I'm potentially unable to take this 3+ AP tests.

However I'm now trying to find out if CLEP scores (somewhat of an equivalent) are accepted here in Denmark or not.

Quickest bachelor degree

Hey guys! Maybe the wrong place but worth a shot. I wanna teach English in Vietnam, it's my native tongue and I love kids. The Vietnamese goverment requires you to hold a bachelor's degrees of any kind. If I know anything about the Vietnamese goverment they won't be very picky, but I still want something at least somewhat legit. By somewhat I mean probably wouldn't get me very far here in the west, but not arrest for presenting it as a bachelor's. Does that make any sense? Thank.

My comment to a friend's long fb rant about how to improve high school education

My friend's OG post, in response to an "improving education" icon-graph chart: "I have some ideas on all this. Parents and teachers should have the responsibility of helping with this and solidifying these skills to some degree.

The self defense portion should be incorporated into Physical Education. Let’s be real here, how many times do we really need to run around the gym and play dodgeball? Also with basic self defense techniques should include deescalation of violence.

Home Economics should not include just cooking, but social etiquette(alongside on how to set a table up).

I say we should phase out wood-shop and change that to add the basic home repair and car maintenance. The trade programs should be their own category that one can choose from to get into an apprenticeship post-graduation.

Personal Finance, Taxes and Insurance should be a class of its own.

Survival Skills should be an elective and not a requirement to make room for more day-to-day life skills.

Public speaking should be strictly an elective. Plenty of people with an internet connection on their phones who spout off BS all the time and do so with the most confidence and the echo chamber of strangers with the same opinions to inflate their egotism.

Coding should be an elective and not a requirement.

Stress management should be incorporated into Health class."

My comment: Yes to all of that. I agree! Great ideas, Travis, way better well articulated than I could be able to express on my own. I, too, have lots of ideas for improving high school requirements and curricula options, including but not limited to Humanities instead of separating Social studies from English, Exploration of World Languages for 1 yr as a stand-in for foreign language (say Spanish1 or Japanese1 doesn't go well and a student doesn't wanna continue, but they still want to get the minimum 2yrs to graduate). Exploration would offer project based learning to explore other languages and partnership with local foreign restaurants for students to be able to immerse themselves in an internship to improve their language and general knowledge skills in that language. Could be like a Mediterranean restaurant for learning Arabic/Turkish/Greek, Italian restaurant for Italian, French bakery for French, and so on and so forth for other languages. Getting community businesses involved in high school courses, every class and course available is sponsored by an individual business, willing to offer 2-6 internship positions for students per semester.

True joy comes from within. Know your value - it's already there. Build real confidence on your own terms. You are enough as you are. Letting go of wanting importance gives you freedom and bliss. You hold the keys to your happiness. Unlock it from the inside.

How long does it take for a HS to enter grades on transcripts?

I am a registrar that started working for an online school some months ago. This is my first time I've been in this type of job position, so I'm still learning a lot about the job itself.

My question is.... how long does it normally take for a high school to enter students grades into a transcript?

I ask this because I was first told it would be 11/6 when they would be entered for the first part of the 23-24 SY, but once that date came around I was then told it would be 11/13-14. It is now 11/16 and I still have not seen ANY final grades entered on students transcripts... And I keep getting emails and calls from students, families and schools asking why we haven't sent their most recent transcript yet or when they could expect one. I am not able to enter those grades myself - I only enter them when students come to our school and I upload credits from the transcripts we receive. And I don't know what to tell students on a date since the one I'm given keeps changing.

So yesterday morning I sent an email to several admin people in our school who would at least probably know something about it, asking for any kind of update or reminding them that it needs to be done (as I have no power to do it myself). I have only been met with silence - no one has yet responded, but I know for a fact most of them have been working and seeing their emails. I see that they're online through zoom or teams. The only person I know who can't do anything is my supervisor, as he is gone this week due to bereavement. He is one of the few people I have respect for here so there's no way I'm bothering him about it til he gets back, and he's not the one who enters them in anyways.

And ever since I've been working here, I've been seeing some questionable stuff and some shoddy work, particularly for the high school grades. They're really unorganized and even when I told my partner how I did my job and all the issues I come across, he also thinks this school is a mess and what would be akin to "held together with Shoe strings and gum".

There's a lot of issues I'd like to talk about, but mainly I'm just wondering how long it takes for high schools to update transcripts so that I can see whether I'm just being inpatient or my concern is valid here.

Does anyone know or have experience with that?

my new teachers from my new class me smart but i repeated class. They should actually know about that, isn't it. Therefore I repeated all of the things they have been learning now and I can even remember from last year. Should I still be delighted by their comment or should I be critical and don't feel praised?

Looking forward to your thoughts on a tool I'm working on to enhance understanding.

I've been lurking on this sub for a while and I see a chat GPT ai post every other day about how it is affecting education. I wanted to build a solution to this problem and have been working on this for the past 6 months. I'm reaching out today to share and gather your thoughts on it. I've named it "Sincerely." It's a tool designed to navigate the complex intersection of AI technology and education, with a focus on promoting genuine understanding and learning.

My thought process in coming up with this was how can we ensure that these AI advancements aid rather than hinder the true educational journey of students?

Here's the essence of "Sincerely":

I want it to integrate with submission portals and LMS. I'm currently working on making it compatible with Canvas which many of you use. The way it works is:

When the student first submits their work, the tool examines student assignments for signs of AI-generated content and stylistic anomalies, ensuring the work's authenticity.

After that, "Sincerely" engages students interactively. A live automated video dialog pops up and it asks them questions about their work, highlighting the sentences that were flagged for potential AI usage, diving into their understanding of the subject matter. This isn't just about what they've written, but about how deeply they comprehend and can discuss the concepts.

Sincerely then analyses the work submission along with the video to provide valuable feedback for educators. I've identified a few metrics that I think will add value. These include an 'Understanding Score' to gauge the depth of a student's knowledge, an 'Authenticity Index,' and an 'Interactive Communication Score.' These scores together will give a better sense of whether the student has used AI to enhance their learning or are using it blindly without an effort to comprehend the course content. However, I'm also aware that this is a new approach and that there's much to learn and refine.

This is where I'd love to hear from you. What are your thoughts on integrating a tool like "Sincerely" into the educational process? Do you see it enhancing true learning and understanding, or are there aspects I might be overlooking?

You can try out a demo of the app. The link is in the comment below

Thinking about seeking higher education in Mortuary Science:

Not sure if this is the subreddit to discuss this topic, but google searching leads to advertisements and no answers I’m looking for. I’ve always thought about pursuing a career in mortuary science, taking forensic science in high school was some of the most fun/interesting classes I’ve ever had, however I chickened out when we had to dissect the pigs, and i did not participate. I failed at pursuing a college degree, I started college in COVID times so everything went online, and it was miserable, I flunked out, ruined my GPA( I think I have no idea how to look at that), and was denied further acceptance to the college after I took a 2 year break from school to figure myself out. Is mortuary school something more trade-like? Would I get over my fear of the morbid over time? Is it something I can attain?

When life gets stormy, staying the course can be tough. But while we can't control external winds, we can adjust our own sails.

With self-awareness as our compass, we can navigate twists and turns. Hardships will come, plans will go awry. But resilience, agility and inner wisdom allow us to tack toward calmer waters. There is always a way forward if we remain flexible, adapt and keep hope alive. Together we can sail toward peace.

Do any American schools teach grammar anymore?

I've seen a lot of discussion about how many US schools don't teach phonics anymore, but I don't really remember being formally taught about grammar either. At some point in elementary I must've learned basic concepts like the difference between nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc, but not much beyond that.

At the middle school I went to we even had 2 separate English classes with 2 separate teachers every day, but both were literature based with one focusing more on books, and the other focusing more on short stories and poems with an occasional nonfiction unit.

My high school English classes were also mostly literature based and the only time the topic of grammar came up was when we discussed an author's grammatical choices in the context of a story.

As a result I feel like I can usually tell whether or not a sentence is grammatically correct, but I can't really explain why. It's also made it hard for me to learn other languages, because the textbooks will talk about things like interrogatives, and I don't have much of a reference point to understand that.

Is there any particular philosophy or policy that discourages the teaching of grammar? Is this a widespread thing, or did I just go to really weird schools?

Edit to add: Despite not teaching grammar, I'm pretty sure my elementary school actually did do phonics because I remember having a phonics workbook with a picture of plaid pigs on the cover.

Is this a good idea?

i am a current college senior studying journalism but have had experience as a summer teacher for three years. i am well aware of the literacy issues impacting children in the U.S today in addition to the growing number of schools hit by book bans. I really think kids should be able to read challenging material that reflects society and it’s doing a disservice to kids by barring them from doing so. I want to start a program so that different age groups can read and learn from books that discuss societal issues. I am thinking an hour long class where the first half focuses on reading the material and the second half is an activity that reinforces what they learned and makes sure they comprehend the material. I’m thinking of a book of the month format (depending on age range). Obviously younger kids will have shorter books, but older kids grades 11-12 will have longer books and since this would be a weekend program they would need a month ideally to get through these materials. I created a mock pamphlet below. Teachers, do you think this is something i should pursue? I am not a teacher just a journalism student. I have former teachers I can consult as well as friends graduating with k-12 teaching degrees as well.

My manipulative student complains about me, but it was her who didn't accomplish the task

First, I need to say that English is not my first language, so any misspelled word or problems with my grammar are understandable.

I teach in what in US you call "Community College". Is in a career about education. I teach Spanish Grammar and Writing. I have 31 students in that class: all of them grown ups (between 25-45 years old). We're finishing the school year. One of my students, "JS" was very disrespectful towards me all year: barely shows up at class, her assignments were pretty bad and never fixed them and when she shows at my class she is with her phone, never reads a thing or participate in the class. She almost failed in May, because she did a lousy work, I said to her to do a make-up which was even worse. My fellow colleagues forced me to give her a third chance, against my considerations. So she send the 3rd make-up exam and she barely pass (also horrible), because she doesn't care to fix the paper with all of my considerations (it's like she belittles me and my knowledge in the subject)

Two weeks ago, she (and other students as well) must send to me a make-up exam. The test originally was due on September 9th. I send her the mark on September 18th and I told her that she must fix some thing. The make-up was due to november 3rd. In between those dates I give 4 coaching classes for ALL THE STUDENTS that needed to do the make-up. She never shown up. When the due date of the make-up finally arrived, she didn't send me the paper. But, she asked another professor for my cell number and wrote me a message. Totally inappropiate. I said many times that I don't give my number to students, that they must wrote an e-mail. I complain about it with the Vice Chancellor about it.

Next week, Chancellor and Vice Chancellor talked with me and Oh, surprise! JS complained about me for failing in my subject. I said, that she didn't accomplished the bare mynimum (75% attendance and all of her assignments). But it seems to them, that is my fault. Vice Chancelor even screams at me.

I was very stressed, I've cried. Never in 18 years teaching I had a situation with a student like this. In fact I'm like the "cool teacher", the one who teachs with humour, good vibes and that is fair with her students.

Now, Chancellor asked me (today) to make a re-re do paper for her, based in the Norms of the Institution. I'm really pissed. Like someone said "Fuck my drag, right?". I feel disrespected, like no one cares about me. I did my job, she didn't. Her classmates (all of them) with all the problems of adulthood did their job but her. For me it's disrespectful for them too. It's not fair. What do I do?

Any advice/experience on how a school can implement support for tablets during exams?

Hi, I have recently obtained the right for compensation measures in my college. I need to propose and discuss with my school what to do. My school is pretty open to it, but they don't want to introduce anything that could be abused for cheating.

For instance, I asked to use headphones during exams, they refused because it could be used to connect to external devices. So I showed that it is possible to track at which device the headphones are connected with the app and see what is playing. With this, I was allowed to keep headphones during exams.

I want to ask to use a tablet during exams because writing on a tablet a lot of advantages for me, but this would definitely not be allowed without some added security.

So I was thinking if you have some advice on how I could assure that I am not cheating? Maybe you know some software specific for this? Perhaps something that share the screen of my tabled on a PC or that remotely disable some functionality?

Any advice is appreciated :)

So I was having an conversation with my mom about the fact that east asian countries (more specifically where I’m from, South Korea) has a more competitive / difficult / whatever education compared to the US. With the academies (more specifically, hagwons) being very common, I told my mom that students in the US probably have a more stressless school life + more free time (compared to korean students) due to there being less academies / hagwons (or none at all) and my mom said that they probably get tutors. Is this actually true??? like im genuinely curious is this actually common

edit: btw i mean tutors that you get outside of school; ones that are provided by the school dont count

Do you need a laptop for a Computer Science education?

Hey!

I'm looking to start a computer science degree after summer. I already have a pretty solid desktop at home, but is there a need for a laptop? I can see practical reasons for getting one, but how much does it matter and do you need a good laptop?

Thanks in advance!

Academic Grants for High School Class

For my AP Physics class we'd like to participate in the KidWind competition, but finding grants that haven't already closed or close too late is proving very difficult. The competition is in March, so if anyone knows of any academic grants for the PA area that close before then, that would be incredibly helpful.

Geometry

Hello what is the purpose/benefits of learning geometry?

1) Do you get to use it or it becomes lost skill if you don’t work certain job that requires that skill

2) do we need to use this in trigonometry

3) is there anywhere it’s used in high level mathematics?

4) last but not least, is it fun to learn or takes time to learn and solve problems?

Got Observed by the State

Okay everyone I got observed by the state in a new program specific to VA. VBQ5 is a grant program to keep educators/caretakers in the classroom for the whole school year in birth-5 y/o classes. I teach preschool for 3&4's. I'd like to start saying I think my observation went very well. However, what they are looking for is insanity. I was told straight up that I am not allowed to say "no". I'm a firm teacher, I believe kids need boundaries and we as people are allowed to set boundaries. I also believe that saying "no" to young children is a good thing, it teaches them that "no" is not bad word and gets them ready to be able to use that language too. I want kids to be able to stick up for themselves. That is really the only thing that baffled me about this program. But I wanted to get some others perspective.

A teacher says a website that ends with ".org" means the source is reliable. Is it rare this kind of lack of common sense?

Hi all,

My relative's daughter, who studies in a middle school in US, says "a website that ends with ".org" means the source is reliable" because her teacher told her so. She believed it and see website ends with ".org" as a reliable source.

If this is true, that teacher seriously lack common sense, and making this kind of claims to students is actually dangerous. The fact is, everyone can buy a ".org" domain by less than 10 USD.

My question is: Is this teacher the exception in US education system? Should this teacher be sent to some improvement plans?

University forced coursera registration

Hey guys, I've got a situation to discuss. Our university teamed up with Coursera, initially offering us a discounted registration fee of 3k that would otherwise cost 35k for 3 months. However, it's become a bit dicey. Despite being told it's our choice, the university is now pressuring us, threatening assignments linked to Coursera that we'd need to pay for if we don't register. They claim it's for our benefit, especially in terms of future placements, but many of us aren't convinced and very few people have registered from my section. And this has got them angry. Recently, a director gave us a passive-aggressive talk, insisting registration is compulsory, hinting at potential issues like not getting recommendation letters for higher studies. Initially, they said it wasn't about money for the college, but the recent behavior suggests otherwise. Any thoughts on what might be going on?

Survey: What are the most common dimensions for clear backpacks among US students?

Hello everyone!
I'm conducting a survey to understand the typical size preferences for clear backpacks used by students in the United States, across different educational levels: elementary, middle, and high school.
As parents, teachers, or students yourselves, could you please share:
1. What are the most popular dimensions (height, width, depth) for clear backpacks at each educational level?
2. Are there any particular models that are preferred?
3. What factors influence the choice of size (e.g., school policy, comfort, capacity for books/supplies)?
Your insights will be incredibly valuable for my research, and I believe this discussion could also benefit others who are looking to choose the right backpack for their needs.
Thank you in advance for your contributions!

36yo SAHM and I want to go to college

Although, I’m not really sure how. I know I want to take some Philosophy classes and possibly some Business management classes.

In my Senior year of high-school I dropped out due to having major home problems and I never once “tried” in high school. I was so behind on credits and I thought I knew what I wanted to do as a career forever but surprise, surprise, an 18 year old’s plans didn’t work out like they thought it would.

I’m now in a very fortunate situation where I am a stay-at-home mom whose husband works but I have ambitions and I crave knowledge. I have the ability to study what I WANT to learn instead of what I HAVE TO study bc of a specific degree I chose as a teenager.

I guess I’m just wondering the best way to go about taking classes bc I have no transcripts or SAT scores. Even if I did, they’d be from almost 20 years ago and wouldn’t be relevant now.

Also, do I have to choose a degree or can I just pay for one class at a time?

If this is a stupid question, I’m sorry. Please be gentle.

Rant: Is that common to think the academic subjects taught in school are a waste of time?

Hi all,

I am Chinese. I think education is waste of time. The teachers I encounter were not good at teaching, at least far inferior than Google and Youtube that make them almost worthless. Also, the subject I learnt a mostly useless. Like the math most people work in work is not more than arithmetic. If they need advance math, they can learn on the fly.

Also, in where I live, people become teacher because it is stable, not because they academically excel. They become teacher at the time they finish their undergrad, which mean they have never work in corporates. They often give me the impression they don't have real world experience on doing things, let alone excelling in surviving the corporate world.

One element of education be teaching students to learn useful real world skill, but what I see is that the material in school curriculum is worthless, and taught by not-very-competent people. It scares me to think of that they are teaching students. It is like the blind leading the blind.

Quite often, our unhappiness is a creation of our own thinking. Understanding our mind can help us be happier.

Happiness starts within. 💭 Our thinking shapes our reality more than we know. 💡 Fears and negativity cast shadows, while gratitude and compassion light us up. 🌞 By understanding our own minds, we can rewrite limiting beliefs and see the beauty in each moment. 🌿 Every day is a chance to choose joy. 💃✨

Looking for resource recommendations for adult literacy and ESL

Posting for a friend who does not have a reddit account.

"My family is sponsoring my husband's sister "Jessica" (F40) from Honduras. She is living with us in our home in the Midwest USA. I didn't know much about her before she immigrated. We found out she cannot read at all, maybe not past a first grade level. She has a work visa and has found a decent paying job working in a factory here, and absolutely must stay employed for her to legally remain with us indefinitely and get a green card, etc.

She also does not speak English. I am working on my Spanish but it's been tough. She was able to enroll in a free local English class for relatives of public school students."

I am hoping to tap the resources in this awesome community for my friend. Can you recommend books, apps, websites, workbooks, video courses, literally anything that is engaging for an adult to learn to read? Also for a Spanish speaking adult to use? I will share your ideas with my friend.

A lot of the resources we find are too childish.

grading in Ireland, Scotland and perhaps other countries

I am outraged. Me and my friend (both from Czech Republic) went on Erasmus student exchanges. Me to Ireland, her to Scotland. Now we share trauma because of the grading system. This probably doesn't apply to science studies, I study history, my friend humanistic studies. This is what I've been told about grading:

"The best mark you can get for your essay is like 75%, which would be an A in my eyes”
“why 75%?
“well to get higher, you’d need to be like a super well educated historian and bring something new. If you were doing maths, then yeah, 100% is possible, but in history, everything is debatable and you’re undergrads, so the best I’ve ever given was like 76%”

Why are we marked based on unreachable standards? How does this make sense? As my friend put it, it kinda feels like:

"oh youre pretty. ... for a black woman."
"oh youre smart ... for a woman"
"oh you get a B, your essay was good ... for an undergrad. of course youll never meet real world standards, but dont worry about it baby, your brain just isnt quite there, its okay"

Is behavior evaluated in your schools?

Is behavior evaluated in your schools? My country have have the following assessments: "excellent", "satisfactory", "unsatisfactory."

In our schools, we assess behavior using the following criteria:
Students who fully meet the basic requirements for behavior outlined in the school's rules and regulations, as specified in the appendix, receive an "Excellent" rating.
Students who partially meet the basic requirements for behavior outlined in the school's rules and regulations, as specified in the appendix, receive a "Satisfactory" rating.
Students who consistently fail to meet the basic requirements for behavior outlined in the school's rules and regulations, as specified in the appendix, receive an "Unsatisfactory" rating.

I'm not entirely sure how behavior marks can influence your future. Perhaps they can affect your characteristics, for example: such as being a good student, achieving high marks, or participating in sports.

Degrees vs. Certifications

I am currently in a company that I wish to retire with. I have a great position, couldn’t be happier. However, I want more responsibilities and more pay. I have no college background but would like to further my education to move up. I am specifically looking towards IT or Payroll. Coursera has great programs at an affordable rate. Could I realistically get into a higher position with just certifications, or is it a waste of time? If so, if anyone is familiar with the Coursera certifications, are there any specific programs for either of those 2 that I should be looking at?

Is It Bad If A Teacher Favors One Gender Over The Other?

I work for an after school program. It’s K-5. It’s a fun job. We’re called teachers, but we really just teach the kids in a social and emotional type of way. There’s one teacher there who’s super nice and charismatic. He gets along with everyone, the kids love him, etc. He works there during the day as an aide so the kids have even more exposure to him. What’s slightly bizarre though is that he tends to favor the girls a lot, mainly the ones in 3rd through 5th grade and a handful of them in particular. He goes out of his way to get their attention often times; not in a bad way, but in a playful type of way which makes it a fun child/adult interaction. He’ll shout playful remarks to them from across the hallway or playground the way you may see high schoolers do to each other. They do sometimes approach him first though. He’ll even jokingly take their belongings like their hats or nick nacks to get them to chase him to retrieve them back. It’s all adorable and wholesome. However, he interacts with the boys, but not nearly as much and he’s this masculine type of guy too so you’d think young boys may look up to him and want to be around him more than girls. He’s fair when it comes to not favoring girls over boys in regards to being an authority figure and isn’t mean to be boys at all. He does this very much out in the open too and the bosses see it and I’m presuming are fine with it. I don’t imply anything bad by this at all, but I’m wondering your take on it from the info here.

Always Getting Sick

Hello everyone. I recently found this subreddit and wanted to join the conversation. I am an English educator (that's what I call myself considering the wide range of things I do at my job) and I was wondering if anyone who works with kids gets sick as often as I do. I was sick three weeks ago (not COVID) and it took about 4-5 days to get over. Now I'm sick again and it hasn't even been a month since I was last sick! This has been happening on and off for almost 2 years for me, and I have been at my job for 4.5 years.

I wear a mask when around my students even though it's not mandatory anymore. I wash my hands approximately every half hour. I use hand sanitizer religiously, and I sanitize work stations between every student (every hour). I'm considering double masking now because I'm almost certain I get sick from working with kids so much (2-5 hours a day, 6 days a week—and I barely go out to do things other than going to the gym and seeing my boyfriend). Any tips?

Considering holding back my 2nd Grader

I have a son who is VERY young for his class. His school has a September cutoff and he was born in late August. There are kids in his class who are a whole year older than him. All throughout his brief academic career, he has struggled and was diagnosed with ADHD for which he takes medication.

We just received his first report card from 2nd grade and it was not good. We had a conference with his teacher and the complaints are consistent; he simply cannot regulate his behavior to focus, and when he doesn’t understand something, he doesn’t ask for help. He is also in a language immersion program and I’m starting to think that this was a bad idea given his attention issues.

On the positive note, he is a phenomenal athlete for his age, and is very talented at soccer and flag football. He seems to enjoy an elevated social status from his friends because of his athletic abilities.

I’m thinking that we should hold him back in the 2nd grade, but change schools and remove him from the language immersion program. This way hopefully the social burden will be reduced. Holding him back will also give him an even greater advantage in sports, and hopefully he can use that to improve any lost self esteem.

Given all this, which do you think is worse, the social stigma of being held back, or the loss of esteem of not doing well in school?

Why not?

I have a question: almost everyone in this subreddit wants to change the education system. So why don't we? We all can. We can donate money, hire great people, establish a school, and create an entirely new educational system. Almost every single person reading this might wonder who this person thinks they are. Well yes, I am nobody. I have no qualifications to even say this. I am just like everyone else in this subreddit. However, I believe that if we all work together and try to get qualified people to help us, we might achieve that. Listen, I don't believe that what I am saying will do anything, but we've got to try—even if there is only a 0.000001% chance.

Education system

Once upon a time I think why do I study. What is the key of being in the school and what does it really teach me. To be honest I still think that school might give you some basic information. But nothing that is good or lifechanging. Some teachers through my ages in the system gave me good information that I could use whole life. However bigger part of them are just useless. Talking about the topic doing the test and that's it.

Testing is good to get information into my head. BUT. The key is to know and to recognize. Not to make feel the pupils feel bad for their performance. Lot of the teachers are digging in the ego of students and calling them that they wouldn't success. It might be motivating for somebody but It might feel destructive.

Also schools are producing the same people. Vacuous, undercontrol guys that are not predicted to achieve something bigger. Just to work for the state and make money under the stronger ones that success in the battle with this system.

I still really don't know if the studying is good or bad. You know those information that I get on University is absolutely useless. Only thing that is wanted from me. To read books and text's and make a resumes of it. Why I'm not learned to critical thinking. Because lot of those books might be really bad written. And It's perspective might be just wrong from my side by my opinion.

Why the schools doesn't learn us to think critically?

Getting Students to Invest in Keeping the Room Clean?

Hello r/education! I could use a soundboard or a discussion with fellow teachers.

I currently teach high school ESOL students at a new-to-me-school. Every day, my students leave my room in a new state of disarray. Small pieces of paper thrown on the floor, a head's worth of loose hair in clumps caught on the legs of the desks, assignments shoved into the small cracks on my bookshelf, broken pencils (my pencils) strewn about, dirt from the bottom of their shoes accumulating underneath their desks, a fine layer of dust covering every surface. I mean, it's just too much to keep up with. Daily I try to pick up by sweeping, putting pencils where they belong, throwing away the forgotten assignments and papers, etc. But honestly, I just can't keep up. With everything else I have to do, I can't keep the room clean on top of it all.

So I have an idea, but it's like half an idea. I want my kids to start cleaning up my room for points. This chore will be five points, another chore might be 10 points. Classes can earn points and the first class to get, say, 50 points will receive some award (pizza or donuts or extra credit or cell phone time or whatever).

So far the list of cleaning tasks I have come up with are:

  1. Sweep
  2. Pick up trash on floor
  3. Sanitize desks/door handles
  4. Dust bookshelf or other dusty areas
  5. Put pencils on floor back where they belong

In the effort of creating dialogue, what are your thoughts? Should I make it so the classes aren't competing but instead working collectively to reach the reward? How can I structure this so that kids aren't sweeping 5x a day (when it only needs to be swept every day or every other day)? I'm not asking for students to do hard labor, just that they be mindful of their space and my space that I have worked so hard to decorate and put together. Is this something parents would complain about that would land me in hot water? I don't think I'm being outrageous here but I would appreciate some outside perspectives.

My parents just chewed me out after my math teacher just called to say I'm seriously not applying myself in her class, and "although I 'get' the work with minimal effort, I could be doing so much more". My parents listed my teachers from K-7 and all my teacher's comments on my mathematical ability and my giftedness in other areas such as writing aswell as my advanced logic for my age and my ability to dive into topics deeply (not bragging just providing context).

(I am in the 2nd highest class in maths, top in all other subjects)

I am not lazy as I do "deep dive" (in my past teacher's words) into topics that really peak my interest such as geopolitics, Russia, China, Iran, etc. However, when I hear all my past teachers talking about my mathematical ability at such a high level, and then look at the work I do today (impressive, but not AS impressive) I kind of just wonder if my mathematical ability worsened, if I am not my "gifted" self anymore, or if I just applied myself into different areas of learning.
Edit: (After reading this through, this entire reddit post just sounds like an unfinished thought, of which it is, apologies for any inconvenience in reading this)
I guess my question is, can anyone relate to my situation or give me guidance?
