i am a current college senior studying journalism but have had experience as a summer teacher for three years. i am well aware of the literacy issues impacting children in the U.S today in addition to the growing number of schools hit by book bans. I really think kids should be able to read challenging material that reflects society and it’s doing a disservice to kids by barring them from doing so. I want to start a program so that different age groups can read and learn from books that discuss societal issues. I am thinking an hour long class where the first half focuses on reading the material and the second half is an activity that reinforces what they learned and makes sure they comprehend the material. I’m thinking of a book of the month format (depending on age range). Obviously younger kids will have shorter books, but older kids grades 11-12 will have longer books and since this would be a weekend program they would need a month ideally to get through these materials. I created a mock pamphlet below. Teachers, do you think this is something i should pursue? I am not a teacher just a journalism student. I have former teachers I can consult as well as friends graduating with k-12 teaching degrees as well.
