Education in the USA - help me to understand

Hello everyone!

I'd like to clarify that I am a student from Hungary, therefore I don't have a complex knowledge about other countries' educational systems even though I like to read about them. I hope my questions also belong here and are free to stay and get answers! I tried to dig myself into the topics but I don't seem to find 100 percent satisfying answers.

At first, I'd like to know about your high school leaving exams. I found that many high schools give high school diplomas which also include an exit examination in the end, but I saw that it got less popular in the past years and not many states have it anymore? Is it true? I know that there is a thing called GED exams which I assume are equivalent to the high school exit exams, but some colleges, places do not accept them. I just would like to know how this high school leaving works exactly :)

And also, the other topic which I just can not seem to understand with my Hungarian brain is the college and university system. What is the difference, is there a difference? How does this work?
