I recently found out the story of a friends family member with the school system and I'm trying to figure out the best way to advocate for a young adult in the school system.
This young "adult" was taken in by a family when they realized that he was struggling. This child was raised by two addicts and went to school sporadically for kindergarten through fourth grade (not in Anne Arundel County, MD). During that time CPS was involved but the child eventually fell through the cracks and stopped attending school for five years ( time this person experienced homelessness, abuse, and living a very sheltered life). The child/ young adult is not very open about what he experienced while living with his parents.
Fast forward to now, the "child" is legally an adult (almost 19) but has the mental capacity of a 10 year old (with an IQ around 80). The Anne Arundel County Public School System they will give him a chance to get a high school degree as long as all credits are obtained by the age of 21.
The child struggles with e-learning to the point of not even plugging in the computer. The teachers and guidance counselors are encouraging the child to withdrawal from school, even texting his cell phone asking him when he is going to drop off the paperwork. When I heard this I was disgusted.
When I talked to this young adult last night, he said this was the first time he had a computer since elementary school library computers. The child also has been on medication for learning in the past but no longer on them.
How can I advocate for this child to get the help they need? What would you put in an IEP?
