Research on the most aggressive levels of “bussing” that still allow a school to successfully achieve integration

I am trying to find evidence that examines how much you can mix populations to still reap the benefits of desegregation (for example a shrinking of the achievement gap due to underperforming students improving academically).

I’ve heard support for desegregation but with limits to the number of low-income/minority students added to an upper class white school system. The argument being that a more aggressive approach would introduce too many underperforming students, pulling down the higher achieving students, and benefitting no one.

Logically, the argument makes sense especially considering the issue of white flight. However I am skeptical of the idea that this could only be done in small increments and more dramatic action cannot be taken.

Would introducing low-income/minority students to the extent that a school goes from 100% white to 75% white in one year be too crazy? Assuming increases in staff etc.

Again any research would be appreciated!
