School regression by Alessandro Barbero (translation)

Bringing here a partial translation from a speech of Alessandro Barbero that explain how school regression occurred in Europe. Adding few personal consideration to make it sound better.

“”In a huge democratic time everyone said that schooling should be accessible to everyone. All should have the possibility to spend lot of time schooling, getting educated and taking over culture. It should not be possible that only the elite and the ones who rule can access to schooling and culture. Everyone should have it, all youngsters must be able to spend a lot of time learning and studying instead of working like their fathers and grandfathers.

During this school democratization some strange rumors and toughest began to float around.

“Yeah Latin was useful but only when the lords were going to school, now that even workers sons go to school what is the point of teaching them Latin?”

Slowly we started also to think, is a physical book really needed? Especially with those new technologies , what is the point ?

Around this point we started going backwards. When only the elite was going to school everyone knew that school was useful and gave you a future, competences and more possibilities in life. But when also normal workers sons started going to school we started questioning everything. “Will I ever need all this math?” “What is the point of just learning by heart?” “Do we need history and law lessons?”

When gaining education it was said that everyone must have the possibility to study many years without questioning all the subjects and thinking what we specifically need and what we really don’t.

We now started thinking that all this schooling can’t be useful on the jobs market and it actually costs a lot and it not that worth. We started to talk like our illiterate grandparents “What is this luxury of only studying and not working?” “At your age I have already worked four years and you did nothing by now” “Yeah why don’t t you go work and study at the same time I’m not having you here doing nothing”

And we are here now disparaging the school system while our ancestors fought for our education. “”
