How do I become a more well-rounded intellectual?

Having never really listened at school, and not done much extra curricular reading, I often feel incredibly stupid in some conversations -- is there any advice you'd give to someone like me? Growing up I had - road smart - parents, who never really made me passionate about specific subjects, or educated me much

I think these influences are influences I don't want to pass down to my children (when I have them), so I want to actively change my overall knowledge & passions/ interests

Any advice?
