A parent came to me with a dilemma about what grade to enroll her child into this coming school year. Our public school district is giving parents the option of repeating last year due to the inconsistent learning that happened because of Covid or continuing on to the next grade. This child went to a Montessori school for grades K-4 and was homeschooled for grade 5 due to Covid. The child is a very smart but very shy and moving into our district without any friends or relationships. Her concern is the child may lose interest if the material is too easy. However, she thinks a year of public elementary school might set her up to succeed better than just dropping her into a middle school setting after coming from such a different learning style montessori/home school environment before. I am leaving towards recommending the additional year of 5th grade since I don’t see graduating public school as a race and it won’t matter if she’s a year older than most of the other students (especially with potential other Covid year repeats). Those middle school years are tough and I think a year of making friends and reinforcing what she already learned can’t be a bad thing. I was hoping for some additional thoughts/advice from you guys (especially since our guidance counselors are basically MIA unfortunately). Thanks for your thoughts!
