Seventh year teacher here. I'm a 29 year old who started teaching a bit early. I really enjoy working at my current school, and it's a continuation high school. My current principal is a role model for me, the way he encourages the staff and how that trickles down to how students feel like they finally belong to a school after many attempts at other schools. I've worked under other toxic principals, but this one made me want to seek alternative options for a positive reason, a part of me wants to become a great support for other teachers but another part of me says, I'll having so many teaching years under me that it's okay to venture out. I'm not sure if I ever want to pursue being a principal but I heard having an admin credential just opens doors to other sectors of education.
I just applied to an admin credential program, but I wish to remain in the profession for 3 more years to have 10 years under my belt. Really, I'm not 100% sure what I'm getting into, but what is out there for someone like me? There is also a huge stigma among educators about who pursue being an admin, about how they lost their ways of being in touch of what it means to be a teacher. How true is that? What types of people are in this field?
What types of experience should I prepare for and/or build up right now as someone so young and inexperienced? I've been asking for more duties and preparing professional development meetings with colleagues, but I'm wondering what else can be done to challenge myself professionally.
