Tips to retain vocabulary and education

Tl:dr I need advice on how to maintain and use a more educated vocabulary. Also could use help with long term retention of education.

Background Ive got quite the box to unpack and I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask. I am nearing the end of my bachelors degree and I’ve found that I’m struggling to retain vocabulary and knowledge of my career field. While I can explain a topic, many times it comes in the form of plain english and not using the technical words that a professional would use. I can write papers all day on the subject and research them but even a month later many times I’ll have to refer to my old work to apply that knowledge or terminology on a new assignment. I’ve also noticed ever since graduating high school I have gradually lost some of my vocabulary and ability to form my thoughts into verbal sentences. For example I’ll use a basic word instead of the more specific word I want to use. It’s frustrating that I have words or phrases “on the tip of my tongue” more often than not.

Self Reflection Some things I’ve self reflected on are: *Am I not applying myself? *I don’t read challenging books as often if at all. *I don’t use the technical vocabulary outside of school so I’m not using it regularly. *is the pace of learning too quick and my education is superficial? *do I have slight brain trauma from contact sports, snowboarding, military. *I sometimes struggle focusing on things i’m not invested into especially when sitting still (general conversation, long lectures at school, writing essays). I find if I don’t actively participate in discussion via commenting or note taking (which is not always appropriate) it can be hard to focus and remember everything that has been said.

Again sorry if this is the wrong place, too broad of a question, or anything else.
