Observational study

I'd really appreciate some input on this.

So, I took a statistics test and the question was "Is this research an observational study or designed experiment? Justify your answer."

I correctly identified that it was observational, but lost half a point because of the wording in my answer...

"Observational because two variables are being compared. Nothing in this study is being manipulated and there is no cause and effect relationship."

Apparently, I had to say it doesn't show a cause and effect relationship... is there really a difference? Should I refute the taken off points? It just doesn't seem significant enough to take off for that, and I think my answer is still technically correct.

Thank you.
