Questions about education in the US

I am working on a paper which is about a comparison of education in China and in the US. I am familiar with China’s education but not American education before college.

So Here are my questions: 1. State governments decide curriculum right? Teachers or schools decide what textbooks they use? 2. Schools themselves, regardless public or private, decide how many or what students can get in right? 2. What classes are mandatory and what classes are selective? Different schools might have different classes right? How much leeway do students have in terms of learning what they like? Do all the classes share the same Weigh in terms of GPA? 3. Are teachers the sole judge of the academic performance of students? What guarantees teachers will not lay back? Are teachers required to attend some kind of conference or learning sessions to ensure their “education quality”?( this is required in China)
