I am sorry if this is the wrong sub. I just was not sure where to ask this question. My nephew is 6-years-old and last week he asked me to read to him for the first time in a while. I read him his book "There was an Old Lady who swallowed Fly Guy" and when I was done he asked me to read it again and I decided he should try to read it. I was surprised when he could not read any of the words. I know he is 6 and I know at that age kids have varying skills when it comes to reading, but I am honestly pretty concerned about it. He is in first grade and I just feel like he should recognize words like "had". I know his parents are not doing any teaching at home, if they are it is not consistent. I really want my nephew to be able to read, he loves being read to and I think he is struggling with recognizing words and needs some extra help.
Right now I am considering buying the book "teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons". Issue is at best I only see my nephew twice a week, the last two months I have only seen him a handful of times. I feel like using this book would require seeing him more and working with him more, but his mom will not do it and his dad only has him Friday-Sunday. I just wonder if it will work if I only see him once a week maybe twice.
I just wonder in my situation if this is a good way to help him or if there is a better option. I am trying to talk to my brother to figure out what is going on in class and see if I can work off that to help him.
I am just looking for any advice on helping my nephew. Any books, videos, or resources that can help me help him. This little dude got so genuinely angry and frustrated when he tried to read, I was sounding out the sight words and he still was not understanding and when I finally said the word all together he would get so upset with himself and I hate seeing that. He is in no way dumb, I think he is just really struggling with reading and I just really want to help him.
