Should non-profit schools receive tax breaks?

I have no problem with private schools, although I think sometimes they lack oversight. I am happy with for-profit, church-run and non-profit models. Since non-profit schools are not taxed on their surplus, should they also receive tax breaks for donations? I don't mind the small local school but the giants, and specially the universities like Harvard and Stanford, are different.

**Please don't divert with all public good / all private bad comments. My question is specifically about the tax side of donations.
