Though I was once a vocational-industrial arts teacher, and have a mild form of dyslexia, my writing style has sometimes been said to be too formal. I think this comes from my elementary school years of reading/writing remediation. Presently, I find that a more informal conversational writing style has taken over public discourse. While the word "like" does not pepper every written sentence, as commonly found in speaking, the word "so" and heavy use of contractions do appear. I would like to hear from those who are language teachers. Are students being taught to write in different levels of formality?
