Greetings. My superintendent has tasked me, a general education high school science teacher, to develop and administer an intervention program for students that have been caught with tobacco products. Our school has been plagued with these products since the Juul became cool and now we have students that are addicted to vaping nicotine salts. The pandemic seems to have worsened our problems. My administrators have been getting a lot of pressure from parents to solve this problem and don't know where to go.
I have been researching solutions, but most studies have been inconclusive beyond intensive 10-20 week programs (specific to adolescent vaping). I have been offered a stipend to implement such a program; however, administration wants it to be faster, like one two-hour session faster. I am prepared to demand the adequate amount of time for an effective program, but I need help.
What has your school done beyond the catch and suspend paradigm? What has worked in the short-term and in the long-term for you? What has your community done? What should be done differently? How has your district recruited parents effectively?
I appreciate stories of success and failure alike. I am a former tobacco user and have good rapport with students; I am comfortable with the counseling aspect of this role. I just want this to work and for my students to not struggle with addiction like I did. Thank you.
