“Social Promotion:” current research or findings?

During reflection on a grad school assignment about graduation rates, I kept fixating on the term “social promotion.”

Most research that is casually referenced cites the significant NEGATIVE impacts of retaining a student in later grades (middle school and beyond), and indicates little to no impact of social promotion (meaning it doesn’t help outcomes at all, but is not associated with the starkly negative outcomes of additional retentions).

HOWEVER, as I look at the research itself, it’s all pretty dated. The studies we’ve all heard of are primarily from the 80s and 90s. A rudimentary search doesn’t produce much literature on social promotion in the last 10-15 years. Is anyone here familiar with any current research on this topic? Is social promotion actually the better option, or does it just theoretically fit?

For additional context, this is something I’ve struggled with in my own position as a school admin: generally, I find retention ineffective in middle school (it’s more appropriate when students are younger and research indicates that retention in middle school has significant impact on drop out rates in high school), but there are 1-2 cases each year that I really think WOULD benefit from repeating a year of middle school. This year, I was barred from retaining ANY students in middle school, and the rationale provided was the risk of lack of completion of high school was too high. If the data indicating that risk is nearly 30 years old, is it really reflective of our current landscape?

Human rights books/story recommendation for 9th and 10th lit?

Posting this in several different communities to get lots of input.

Hi r/education! I would love to start a dialogue on some of your best recommendations for books and stories that deal with human rights?

Given the political climate and the fact that, according to my superintendent, teachers are supposed to be “politically neutral in the classroom,” - which, btw, Paulo Freire said that teaching is NEVER apolitical, so, f that- I want to give my kids the opportunities to draw their own conclusions. Hopefully this will inspire them to take action in the areas they can. I teach 9th and 10th literature to ESOL students in America, who are well aware of humans rights violations and violence and I think it would be amazing to give them some stories that are genuinely applicable to their own lives as well as the current events happening.

I teach students who have literally walked miles and miles in the dead of night across boarders to safety; I teach students who have had their parents, grandparents, siblings, and cousins killed mercilessly in drug wars; I teach students who were raped in their home country, fell pregnant with a baby with special needs, and forced (due to either family expectations or finical constraints) to give birth and mother their child at the ripe age of 14; I teach children whose families lived rich and prosperous lives in their home countries, only to be torn from their beds in the middle of the night by drug cartels needing their land and home for “business” and safety; I teach students who lived in countries with corrupt politicians with bribe-able police forces who are supposed to keep them safe. My students LIVE the inequities, violence, and fear every day so why shouldn’t my curriculum reflect their lived lives?

I’m interested in Spanish-speaking authors, women authors, and those authors whose voices are not commonly studied. In 9th lit, I’ve taught March I, which the students were kind of able to connect with when taught in tandem with the Civil Rights Movement, and “The Pearl” by John Steinbeck, which they love because it’s based in Mexico and they identify with the treatment of poorer classes. I’ve also taught “Long Way Down” by Jason Reynolds, which the kids identify with and loved because it’s about drugs and gangs -something they live with everyday. In 10th lit, the only thing I really want to save is an end-of-the-year project where they write their own bilingual picture books to read to the local Elementary ESOL students. Other than that, I’m open to upheaving my entire curriculum and starting with something new. If I have to teach Shakespeare’s ”Romeo and Juliet” or “Othello” one more time to a bunch of kids who clearly and appropriately see no validation and reflection of their own lives in the white-washed stories one more time, I’m going to tear my hair out.

So teachers, what do you recommend?

How to get Vietnamese students to speak English outside of the classroom?

Hi everyone,

I work for an international university in Vietnam, and as a student engagement coordinator, my current project is to get students to speak English outside of the classroom. 97% of the students and 92% of the lecturers are Vietnamese natives, and students only speak English when they have no alternative.

How would you approach this task without making the students feel negative about it?

Big thanks for the help.

Here is what is wrong with the grading and feedback system (in most schools/colleges/unis)

What we accept to be the norm in the society can be a downfall for many students in schools. Especially when this is implemented since a young age.
I am talking about the report card.

"The problem with a report card is that it measures all students against the same criteria, which ignores that each student is different with unique talents, distinct likes and dislikes, and particular aspirations. And when we see the F on little Johnny’s report card, it’s easy for us to get distracted from our primary job: to help him deeply enjoy his life and fulfill his potential by developing and deriving pleasure from his unique talents"

This is linked to the article from above. (Submission Statement - What I'm trying to summarise is explained very well in the article linked. It's only for those who want to view the entire article)

To summarise, the article explains how we should focus on developing the skills we're good at instead of focusing on our poor subjects. For example - If I am good at Economics and poor at Science, imagine if I'm forced to improve my Science grades while my economic grades remain the same. The time spent on that can be utilised elsewhere or to work on my strength, which is Economics.

For those who want a better explanation, check the article.

I am sure there are flaws what I'm saying but schools should really consider this more.

What do you guys think?

Should I go to a Vocational school after Graduating Highschool? Or college?

Just need some ideas.

I wonder how many people go to vocational schools after highschool, before college. Or is it truly a stigmatized path that people look down on people on? 'You should go to college after highschool, just like us! It's tradition!'

College is a meh for me right now...As I currently have extreme self-doubt of making it and I'm broke.

So... I want to do vocational education first. I have a small passion and spark of, taking Bread Making/Pastry making or Accounting classes.

So, Title.

What should I do? Or, what would you do in my shoes? Experienced people or not.

Waiting for a reply from my current uni. I was thinking about applying to other universities but I don't know where I'd be accepted. Any suggestions? (UK)

Hey everyone. TL;DR at the end, please help me out here.

So I really want to study Computer Science at an university and 2/3y ago the best option was the UK (I'm in EU), and it still kind of is. They had this program for EU students where we didn't need to pay for our course until a year after our study period (they gave us an extra year, so if our course was 3y we had 4y and we'd only start paying after 5y) if our income is above a certain ammount by then. This meant I could study "for free" at a good university and worry about paying it once I actually have a good job.

I had some issues with the program which delayed my university situation and I ended up not attending. This caused me a lot of pain cause I felt like I was losing my chance at the future I dream of, mix that with an abusive, toxic and manipulative girlfriend, no routine whatsoever, financial problems and sedentary life, my mental health was completly messed up. I came back to my country after a year, broke up with that girl, and I've been healing myself, I tried to fix my university situation once and for all. I sent a temporary withdrawal form and proof I have moderate depression to them, the guy said he had to receive approval from his higher ups but it's been a month and a week and still nothing. I sent him an email on Tuesday asking if he got any news or if he knew when I could expect to receive an answer, but he didn't reply.

I'm not sure they will accept me or not and right now I feel like I shouldn't wait for an answer that could be 'NO' and then waste another year waiting, I'm already 21 by the end of the year I'll be 22, some people my age are about to finish their course and I've been stuck. So I was thinking I could apply for another uni. Back then I applied to this one with the help of a company so I was limited to ~50 universities in the UK, but now I could pick others that weren't available. The problem is I didn't finish my highschool, this company negotiated with the uni to get me into 1st year of uni even though I hadn't finished highschool (I failed two subjects Mat and Physics-Chemistry but my other grades were really good), so I'd probably have to go for a foundation year this time? My problem is I don't know which university to pick. If I could chose any I'd go for one of the very best Computer Science unis like Oxford or something, but obviously there's no guarantee they'd accept me, I'd say it's quite unlikely, but I would like to know other people's opinion.

TL;DR: Had some issues with uni, ended up not attending. I tried to fix things with them but they're taking a long time to reply and their answer might be 'NO' so I was thinking of applying to other universities in the UK. I didn't finish my highschool so I'd probably have to go for a foundation year? I hired a company last time and they negotiated with my uni to put me in 1st year but now I don't have their help, which also means I can chose from any university but again, I didn't finish highschool so I don't know which universities would accept me. Any suggestions?

Can I apply to collage with a transcript that isn’t in an envelope?

I moved to Dallas from outside of the states (Jordan) 2 months ago and I’m looking to transfer to UT Dallas, I got my official Highschool transcript with Signets and stamps from the ministry of education and the ministry of foreign affairs (I know this sounds weird but this is how it works back there), my Highschool doesn’t do sealed envelopes because the actual papers themselves need to be made official after receiving them.

So now I have a week to figure it out before submission ends, I’m going to contact the university itself but anxiety itself is killing me and I needed to ask someone about this.

Like, is there a way for me to get in touch with the collage and explain my situation but or do they generally not care for cases like these?

Im a Transfer not a freshman and My collage transcript is already in a sealed envelope btw.

I need help understanding the positives behind so much emphasis on sports in school.

I want to preface this by saying I am not trying to insult any educational program. I grew up in Florida and now live in Alabama and work at a school. Florida ranks number 3 in education while Alabama ranks around 47. I have noticed several big differences in the schools. The biggest being how sports are handled. In Alabama almost every teacher is a coach. In Florida I never had a teacher as a coach. These coaches aren’t there with any interest in teaching. I work with them so I really know. Plus I know what the kids say who takes their classes. But when it’s talked about in conversation I feel like a black sheep for thinking the over emphasis of sports isn’t good for education. Everyone seems completely on board with sports being a priority. Help me understand. I also have strong feelings about the dangers of over taxing young bodies and the damage it does over time. But that is a conversation for another day.

I’m Reluctant on Going To College

I’m starting freshman year of college soon and I feel reluctant due to my perceived inadequacy. I’ve spent the last few years in homeschool, even before the pandemic, and have learned significantly more through self study than I did publicly. Despite all of my progress I still lack some knowledge that’s important for college. I don’t want to return to an environment where I’m fighting for grades instead of knowledge and subjected to the embarrassment of what I seemingly lack. It’s irrational, I know, but the fear holds strong regardless. Any advice would be much appreciated.

The staff at the school emotionally abuse my children

My daughter was sexually assaulted by a boy who goes to the same school. The boy's father has an extremely friendly relationship with the school management. Ever since the school district has been harassing my family and bullying my children, in an unimaginably barbaric way.

They have been victim-blaming my daughter, and treat the sexual offender as if he did nothing wrong. They are raising a future rapist, and I heard that boy was caught having sex with a girl at the school gym, but he did not get any consequences.

The only reason that I kept my daughter at school was that she had friends she knew since kindergarten. But my little girl had to go to school in fear of bumping into the sexual offender at school or if he would retaliate against her at school. Instead of helping her, the principal would not stop harassing my daughter even though she did nothing wrong. She was only a victim. When I told the principal that my daughter was cutting herself at home due to emotional distress, the principal escalated the emotional abuse against my daughter and my family. It is like her goal was to see my daughter commits suicide.

I pulled my daughter out of that school at the beginning of this year and her life has been so much better and happier. She gets all the services she needs for her disabilities and emotional issues at the new school even without me asking for them. They evaluated her thoroughly and found issues that I was not aware of. That's how a school is supposed to be!

However, I still have a son in that evil school district. The only reason I keep him there is because of his friends. It is traumatic for children to have to move to a new school, However, the school harasses him too. They put my son in the same room as the sex offender and the parents of the sexual offender even though this is against the law. The law says that a convicted sex offender should never be in the same building as the victim. My son knew that his sister was assaulted. Can you imagine how traumatized he was when he had to see the offender again? Moreover, the parents of the offender were very angry and aggressive with us during the trial. My son was not safe being near those people.

I do not know how to handle this. The superintendent is a close friend of the parents of the sex offender, the school has a high-rank ex-police officer working for them who still has influences in the police department that the police will not take action against the school district. If I report them to the department of education, the school district will just retaliate and escalate their abuse and harassment as they had done before to my family. They have been creating evil untruthful stories about my family and they will make my son's life at school as hell as they did to my daughter. They use their position in the school district so people believe those evil stories even though none of them is true. My family has no protection. I do not know what to do. There has been nothing that would stop this school district from abusing and harassing my family. Nothing literally.

Measuring student's agency in K12 digital services

Hi, we are a private K12 school with a custom LMS/SIS. One of the main goals of our school is to develop agency (ownership over their learning and life in general) in our students. What proxy metrics would you use to measure the level of agency of the students over the digital services? Doesn't really matter what instruments are we currently using, I'd love to hear your general thoughts - any of them are welcome!

what are some different kinds of schools?

So fiance and I are planning on trying for kids in a year or so, so I've been looking into different education options.

First and foremost, homeschooling is 100% off the table, and I don't care to discuss my reasoning. So please don't suggest homeschooling.

Regular public school is also off the table. Not for any political/religious reasoning, but because the school system in our area is one of the worst in America, in literally every aspect from curriculum to the fact that the teachers like to touch kids while the system covers it up. Fiance and I both went through that system ourselves, and it's not an experience we want for our kids. And since we won't be moving due to a vast array of other reasons, there's no chance of getting the kids into a school in another district.

I thought charter school might be a good option, but after looking into them, I don't think that's a good choice. The curriculum in most of them seems to be lacking, and there is exactly one with a decent athletics program- and it's one of the ones with the worst curriculum. I guess sports shouldn't be that important to me, but because fiance and I are both very athletic, there's a good chance sports will be important to at least one of our future children. Obviously I'm not going to force my kids to do sports, but I want them to have a decent opportunity. I mean if it comes down to it, yes academics will come before athletics. But with minimal outside-the-school athletic options, I'd rather not have to compromise if I don't have to.

Then of course there are private schools. Living in the Bible belt, 90% of the private schools anywhere near here are Christian schools. And while fiance and I do consider ourselves christians, there's so much indoctrination and skewed teaching that goes on in those schools. Even as a Christian I don't agree with most of what these Christians schools teach, and I want my kids to learn religion in a gentle and loving manner. Not in a "you can't do this, this or this, or you're going to HELL YOU HORRIBLE SINNER" kind of way that Christian schools tend to teach. Yeah, it's no wonder so many kids come out of those schools hating Christianity in it's entirety- of course they do when they're been traumatized by it. Once again, don't want to put my kids through that.

The other 10% of private schools in this area have their own issues. The few affordable ones have terrible curriculum. The rest have tuition rates of $50k+ per year, which for one child we might be able to afford, but not more than one, even with financial aid. And those schools don't look that great anyway, even if we could afford tuition for multiple kids.

There is only one magnet school around here and every kid that goes/went there hates it, teachers don't tend to last more than a year there, and overall it just doesn't look good. I've looked into Montessori schools too, and while there was one that looked halfway decent, it only did Pre-K through 1st grade, so that's still gonna leave me trying to figure out what to do after that.

So I'm kind of at a loss now. I realize I'm probably being way too picky, but it feels like there are just no good options. Is there even anything else besides what I've already looked into? I mean is there any other kind of schools out there other than what I talked about above?? Who knew making education decisions for kids would be this hard.

How do you feel about admin that hangs out with teachers?

What are your thoughts on administrators that hang out with teachers outside of school (and inside)? I see it all the time and it creates so much separation inside the school. I was also told this was wrong by my professor. It makes me want to work somewhere else. Thanks

I’m wondering whom I should contact to get my original GCSEs on paper.

I lost my GCSEs grades on paper a few years back, I know roughly my grades but just want to know what I can improve on. Does the school I went to hold this information (I doubt it in my expectations as there are so many student that fly through year in and year out) or would it be the people who I say the GCSEs for ? Say AQA? Any advice would be great.

When it comes to school ranking sites like GreatSchools, what would the a child's expected experience look like at each rating?

So, lately I've been looking into the rankings on GreatSchools (https://www.greatschools.org/) and a few others, and I got me wondering what these schools may look like from the inside from a student point of view. I was recently looking at homes to tour/buy, but this was something that was very important to my S/O and their family.

That said, I recall some time ago, I took a teaching course in college only to find out that my own high school was low in ranking (less than 4), and even designated as a high-need school. This was interesting because I pretty much hated my high school experience largely because it felt like nothing I did mattered. It also seemed that a bulk of the teachers felt the same way. I asked a few other friends from low rated schools, even the valedictorian of one, and they both seemed to have a similar experience. There were teachers we all loved, but it also seemed that we had to compete to get those teachers. On the flip-side, when speaking with my friends from highly rated schools (higher than 6), I got one of two responses so far. The first was that everyone enjoyed learning and were extremely self-motivated, and that made it an enjoyable experience. The second though, was that the students were so competitive that they frequently cheated, no one cared, and all just wanted to be rich. I haven't gotten a chance to talk to anyone from a mid-range high school yet, but I'm still curious. I'm also asking about the elementary and middle schools too. So, I'm wondering, based on your schools rating (elementary, middle, and high school), what was your overall experience like?

Interview offer for highschool students

Hello everyone!

I am writing my college graduation paper and one of the sections will be dedicated to differences in Russian and American education systems (schools in particular). So, I figured that the best way to assess how much people like or dislike it would be to conduct a small interview with both sides.

If anyone of American highschool students here would like to provide their thoughts on the matter - that would be most helpful. Not necessarily a video interview, just 8 small questions, no longer than 10 minutes. It's mostly about what assignments you receive, how they are graded, etc. And, naturally, your own personal opinion is also appreciated.

Thanks!

reading material

Here is the narrative of adolescent World of Warcraft players using the game's chat to speciously praise Hitler and make false boasts of having committed rapes. Those kids have no appreciation of the enromity of their actions. They only "understand" that they are misbehaving for the sake of misbehaving and no one is punishing them for it. Blame lies with neglectful "parents" who are deluded that their little angel is playing nicely with his computer toy and therefore throw the kid into abandonment on the internet to escalate his misbehaviour for the sake of misbehaving until he is committing criminal offenses such as identity theft to frame some innocent person for sending harassing texts to a third party. The police can only trace the owner of the device used to commit those crimes, not prove who is using the device, but the two victims CAN sue the parents and force them to sell the house to pay for a lawyer. Once that threat is made the parents suddently discover that they have self-indulgently squirted and whelped and then forgotten their kid even exists. They bully the kid into faking remorse and contrition, giving police the confession to ensure that the kid will never be able to get a job in his life.

This odyssey actually began in the 1980s, when Commodore Business Machines positioned their new Commodore 64 computer as a children's toy. The parental assault upon god of abandoning their kid to the new computer toy immediately became modem use for software piracy of games, "phreaking" (theft of long distance telephone signals to give some poor shmuck a fat long distance telephone bill), and other "harmless misbehaviours" that culminated in 15-year-old Rehtaeh Parsons being driven to suicide by cyberbullying by other kids from school. The little shits who committed those criminal misbehaviours on their Commodore 64s grew up to be internet gurus who intended the internet to be only an annihilator of accountability so that deliberate wrongdoers would have impunity foir their deliberate wrongdoing. All along they have been concealed destroyers of civilization who have no abiity to create or build, only to tear down and ruin.

The other week I read the alarming news that, if the internet were to shut down, only two days would pass before civilization collapsed. We are THAT dependent on this satanic annihilator of accountability. May God have mercy on our souls.

I recently taught an economic systems unit in my economics class and we played Monopoly as a means of discussing each economic system. Here is how it went.

Hey everyone. I like to teach with games a lot. Usually I use video games, but this year I decided to bring board games into my classroom. Part of the year was dedicated to learning about different economic systems so I thought it would be cool to play Monopoly with the rules altered to better fit whichever economic system we were discussing at that time. You can read about how it went here. My lesson plan is also attached inside for free. You will need to make an account though.

This is my website Hey Listen Games where I share all of my game based learning curriculum. Like I said, I usually make curriculum and find ways to teach with video games, but I've decided to change things up this year and incorporate board games. About 95% of the curriculum on the site is free to access. I hope you all can find something useful.

How do I start reading papers? I’n not a scientist but I want to know more.

Hi

It annoys me that most of my "knowledge" comes from youtube videos. They often cite sources, but I feel bad when I digest knowledge already chewed up and spit out by some middleman. I am ashamed to admit that I know something "from a youtube video".

I am interested in various topics, but when I tried to read articles found on the Internet, they turned out to be too complicated for me to understand or pay attention to.

How can I find papers on topics that interest me that won't be so difficult to read?

Are double degrees worth it?

Next year I am going to college and I want to do a Computer Science degree. The thing is that where I live they also offer a double degree: mathematics + cs. Studies are a year and a half longer but I would end up with a degree in mathematics and another one in cs.

Do you recommend double degrees? Do you think it is worth it or should I go with the “basic” cs degree? I also have to note that I am interested in the double degree because the mathematics program seems extremely interesting, but cs has always been my passion.

I am concerned that recruiters will think that with a double degree you do not acquire the necessary knowledge in any of the two subjects.

I think I did my entire essay wrong and I need help. Anyone who studies migration?

Basically i was elaborating and analyzing the reports that criticized the expulsions of sub-saharian refugees in Algeria. I had read on refugee protection that it comes under 1959 convention and wrote extensively on it. I didn't realize that those are transit migrants and they wouldn't need that since Algeria is not their destination. I was just going along with whatever the reports were saying and I'm unsure how to maneuver this since I'm done. Would appriciate help.

They Told Me Quantitative Literacy Would Be Easy...What A Lie For a Dumdum Like Myself

EDIT: Adding on to my post, I am generally ok/mediocre at Computer Programming languages like Java, Python, HTML, CSS, Javascript.

I'm about to graduate with my Associate's Degree in IT/General. I was forced to do a math class to graduate and had the choice between Pre-Calc, Algebra, and Quantitative Literacy. My advisor told me Quantitative Literacy was the easiest, so I went with it. Oh how wrong I was...

I got through the Quant. Literacy Support class easily, it wasn't that hard. But anything to do with the actual class, has been making me bang my head against a wall until I stubbornly figure out how to do the damn questions. I struggle alot with all the probability questions, the finance questions, and probably at least a good 40-50% of the class material. I suck at Math. I hate Math with a passion. And I have a good prediction that I won't use any of this Quantitative Literacy nonsense in my career, if not in my life at all.

I do not see me busting out my iPad midway and doing math calculations for anything in my lifetime. If I need to math, I will use a calculator, an online algebra solver, or websites that have the formulas all set up for me like loan calculators, permutation/combinations calculators, total proability/odds calculators, fractions calculators, etc.

I'm sorry but I see quantitative literacy as useless to me, as well as most generally mid-advanced mathematics. I have not had to use mid-advanced mathematics most of my life and I am almost 30. I doubt I will use it for the rest of my life, including my career. And if I do, when it comes to developing video games, then I probably either will only learn what I need to know and let the computer do the rest, or hire someone who can do it.

P.S. I have ADHD, and whenever I do calculations and formulas, even writing them down, I have always made careless mistakes my entire life. I never got good math grades or did well in Math, failed University level Discreet Mathematics FOUR TIMES, and always end up making a miscalculation about 80% of the time I do a long calculation/formula. Or I end up being so slow that it takes me almost an hour to solve like 10-15 questions like on my test

Welcome your thoughts on:

How hard is it to get in to one of the best universities?

Is some knowledge and practice, in the field I want to study, necessary to get me through the competition?

How much harder are the tests compared to an average university?

How fierce is the competition?

I'm not the best but not average either, more like an average of the best. I am quite good at math and academically overall, but I doubt my ability to actually get in.

The university in question is Technical University of Munich. However, I'm open to recommendations, the university is just a stretch goal at the moment.

If you care to share any experiences with applying, I will be very happy to listen.

Is it weird that a father call his aged son babe ?

My father don’t speak much when I was at home. And he usually ignored me and my questions. He seemed very easily to be tempestuous and he was so moody. But ever since I left my home, he started to express his love for me. And called me babe, which I think it’s disgusting. I am 23 years old. However he never called me that before. He had barely no friends and hard to talk to people. So why would he do that? What’s his mentality? And is it appropriate to call a son babe ( does it sound gay)?

In my opinion, when a child receives low grades, it’s because their parents aren’t being strict enough

Both of my children are straight A students. That’s only because I enforce strict homework/studying routines on them. Unlike most kids their age, they spend more time looking at books than playing video games. When a child gets low grades, you have to question if their parents are playing a role in their child’s education. Are they being strict enough? Parents being too lenient on their children can have a negative effect on their grades.

My partner's private school in NYC just informed her they are considering letting her go. This follows a tumultuous month of illness triggered by the added stress of a verbally abusive work associate and catching Covid. My partner detailed to her boss that there had to be mediated conversations to defuse the tension as ordered by health officials and her boss did not comply and the abuse continued by the associate upon her return to work. She was apprehensive about going to work in the first place due to this abusive associate and now she does not want to return at all knowing they are actively working to push her out, as anyone would not want to return to that environment. Should I take an office administration program?

I (28F) just got accepted into a two year Office Administration - Executive program in Ontario.

I have no work experience. I started having babies right out of high school.

I want to get into office administration because its mundane and repetitive and it's just always what I pictured myself doing.

Anyways, a friend (who is a nurse, not an office administrator) told me it's not worth taking the program, that it's a waste of money, and I could just apply for an office job without the program.

Is she right? I feel like the education would offset the fact that I've never worked. I feel like there's no way I could get a good office job without anything on my resume.

But now I'm questioning it. She's out in the real world and knows how things works better than I do.

Should I take the program? Or would it actually be a waste of time and money?

TL;DR Is an office administration program worth the money?

Is it just the competition for high grades that affect the quality of learning?

I've heard from many parents and students that students' quality of learning is affected because there is too much competition for high grades and not actual learning.

I'd like to know what others think of this. My opinion is that competition is not the sole factor, there are others such as assessments and grading systems. I discuss their effects here in more detail.

Highschool was Probably the most depressing experience ever for me. grades started off in the 80s for the first year and declined to straight 50s as I couldn't get the classes I wanted each year and lost motivation. I had no dreams and it was really rough and bleak mentally for me, it did not help in my last two years of school I was just thrown in every random course and ended up being randomly dropped in lower grade classes and co-op due to lack of open classes at the time. At the end I just stopped caring and went to school every other day and just slept in class.

I did not attend graduation or any events I just went straight into a min wage backroom grocery labor(which I currently am at still). just figured I failed everything in my final year and it was the peak of my life, especially since I was not told or made aware if I graduated or not.

I got my transcript last year a found out in my final year and surprisingly have 31 credits, almost all of them straight 50s and the highest being 63 in some music class. it was probably due to me usually being very kind to the teachers and usually on friendly terms and they passed me out of pity.

Now, three years of working a painful mentally degrading job I finally got motivation on what to do but now, I feel as I am lost and confused. I do not know what to do, who to talk to or what to be searching for. Covid has made this even worst but now since it is no longer a factor closing resources I am trying again.

I do not know if this is the right place to ask but I thought why not try. it cannot be more embarrassing than not knowing what a community collage is. if there is a better sub reddit or form to be asking, please tell me. I am clueless.

How would you rebuild school for adolescents?

Suppose you were utterly unencumbered by all convention, tradition, state requirements, parent expectations, costs, etc, and you had the opportunity to build "school" for adolescents from scratch. What would you do differently?

Help with a Smart Board

Hello! I’m teaching art summer camp and have a smart board in my room for the first time. It says it’s SMARTEMB when I signed in. I wanted to know if there was an app or anything that goes along with it so that I can create my slideshows and presentations on my computer or phone and just have them available when I get to my classroom on the board since it’s sign in based. Thanks!

Is it bad to study till I'm 27 years old?

I'm (21F) an Indian student who is gonna do her 18 month PG in Design starting August (I'll be 23 when I complete). That's the only proper qualification I will have in the field since I did a BA in a very different field. I want to move abroad to live a better life but just this one creative qualification will not be enough so I want to do an advanced diploma in Canada. But it's gonna be for 3 years. I'll just turn 24 if i choose to go and may finish by 27 and then work.

My Dad said don't worry about the costs and do whatever you wanna do to get educated. But then he also said something like "But see properly because you don't wanna go on studying for the rest of your life, right?" and I feel like he was hinting towards my age and how I won't be properly working till 27. Because Indian mentality is you have to get married within your 20s, anything after is old, nobody will marry you.

My mood is dampened now and I'm reconsidering everything. I really wanna move out tho :(

Looking for a collection of three minute “sermons” to start rehearsals with. Ones that are appropriate in a public school setting

I want to start off my choral lessons with a little bit of thematic character focused reading. One of my directors in college would always read a passage from the Bible to start off rehearsal. That’s obviously not appropriate in our modern day public education setting. I want to keep that idea alive though.

There’s certain ideals I want my students to understand. Vigilance. Respect. Kindness. Honesty. Charity. Things like that.

I want to start each rehearsal with a 2-3 minute reading based on these. Does anyone know of a book that might have a collection of readings like this?

I have a book entitled 100 Three Minute Sermons by Gunn. It is a collection of newspaper articles he wrote. Some of them are well suited for the classroom. Some can be edited to become secular. Some I just can’t use at all.

Anything would be useful. A book. A website. A regular publication.

Can you get transferred from one private school to another one in the middle(November-December) of your final year of schooling(Sixth form)? If so, do you have to pay a fee for only half of the year?

Another question, what about transferring from a private school to the a state-funded one?

Objects to demonstrate the best humanity has to offer

Hello,

It recently dawned on me that my children (boy 8yo and girl 6yo) could greatly benefit from being exposed to exceptional abilities of outstanding artists, scientists, philosophers, architects, sculptors, writers, etc. While too young to fully appreciate many works of great men and women throughout history, their minds nonetheless are able to find and appreciate some things about great works, perhaps moreso than adults. And as they move forward into adulthood, having had some correspondence with some of the best things in history, their minds may open and blossom in ways they may not have without that exposure.

With that little explanation in mind, does anyone have any suggestions for objects to put around the house that would inspire or intrigue their young minds, works that may hold some fascination for grown ups as well?

Thanks.

Is a high school counselor a good job?

A potential goal in mind is becoming a high school counselor. I was wondering if this a good career? How long does it take to become one? What major do I need to take? I’m transferring to a university with a psychology major from my community college, and one of my main goals is to go into a career relating to psychology. Could I become a high school counselor if I major in psychology? I was also wondering what happens to counselors when schools are closed for summer or winter break? I had that aspect in mind as well.

Seeking High School Biology and Chemistry Textbook Recommendations

I will soon be starting out my first year teaching high school science at a brand new bilingual private school and I was asked for suggestions for textbooks. These will be the very first students and classes, so I'm hoping to get off on the right foot with solid course material. The problem is, I don't really know anything about which textbooks are considered high quality as this will be my first year teaching the two subjects at this level. I'm petitioning all you fine teachers with way more knowledge and experience out there to please provide recommendations.

The students are 10th grade students who speak English as a second language. They will have a secondary class that teaches the material in their native language, so it won't be integrated into the classroom. Based on experience with students the region, I expect their proficiency to be around B1 on CEFL scale. The classes for which I was asked for textbooks suggestions are biology and chemistry.

For all those science teachers out there who wish they could build their course from the ground up, which textbooks would you choose?

Much appreciated!

Educators and parents overwhelmingly reject the idea of arming school staff.

https://www.nea.org/about-nea/media-center/press-releases/nea-rejects-call-arm-teachers-wake-school-massacre-uvalde-texas

WASHINGTON — A lone gunman yesterday walked into Robb Elementary School, located in the small town of Uvalde, Texas, and killed 21 people, most of them young children. Mere hours after the senseless school shooting, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton called for arming teachers. Previous polls conducted by the National Education Association showed that educators reject the preposterous position that gun violence can be reduced by bringing even more guns into schools. In 2020, NEA, alongside the American Federation of Teachers and Everytown for Gun Safety, released a report on preventing gun violence in American schools and how arming teachers is a dangerous distraction.

The following statement can be attributed to NEA President Becky Pringle:

“Our public schools should be the safest places for students and educators, yet the gunshots from a lone shooter armed with a military-grade weapon shattered the physical safety of the school community in Uvalde, Texas. The powerful gun lobby and their allies did not waste a second after the horrific killing of 19 students and two teachers at Robb Elementary School to call for arming teachers. Bringing more guns into schools makes schools more dangerous and does nothing to shield our students and educators from gun violence. We need fewer guns in schools, not more. Teachers should be teaching, not acting as armed security guards.

“We need common-sense solutions now. Schools need more mental health professionals, not pistols; teachers need more resources, not revolvers. Arming teachers makes schools more dangerous and does nothing to protect students and their families when they go off to school, shop at the grocery store, attend church services, ride the subway, or simply walk down the streets of their neighborhoods. Those lawmakers pushing to arm teachers and fortify school buildings are simply trying to distract us from their failure to prevent another mass shooting.

“Educators and parents overwhelmingly reject the idea of arming school staff. Rather than arming educators with guns, we need to be giving them the tools needed to inspire their students. Rather than putting the responsibility on individual teachers, our elected leaders need to pass laws that protect children from gun violence and bring an end to senseless and preventable killings. Americans want the carnage to stop. My message to Congress: What are you waiting for?”

Why was I put in special Ed classes in elementary school?

The more I think about it the more I wonder. Why was I put in special Ed classes from 1st to 4th grade? At the time I never realized that it was a class for autistic students but I definitely could see the difference between me and the other students. There were students that would pick there nose and eat it. There were students that would flash the class. And there were students that would throw full on tantrums in order to get there way. I was a very well behaved kid my main flaws were I was lazy and didn’t like to be told what to do. These traits are still in me today. After the 4th grade they told me I “ graduated” from the program and was transferred to regular classes mid school year. I continued my lazy ways in regular classes making my grades awful. This would lead to me going into a learning program threw out 6-7th grade only to be “graduated” again. I would proceed to take high school seriously averaging As to Bs in almost all classes. My strengths were history and English. Contrary to my poor writing and punctuation skills. I made my way to one of the highest levels of history and English classes by my senior year of high school. Why was I beaten down all my past with the shadow of thinking I was autistic? I feel I am normal I have no social problems other than mild anxiety. I’ve never been told I’m autistic by family or a doctor. I’m also very well educated on history now a days being able to compare in knowledge in quite a few topics with historian friends I have. Why was I always seen by the school system as slow and unintelligent it’s like they didn’t know how to teach me.

I can't get myself to study...

I have finals in a month, and I just can't get myself to study. I did not study the entire year and now I have a shit ton (10+ chapters for every subject) that I haven't touched. I like my subjects, I love them in fact but I can't study. I procrastinate, I waste time, but when I finally sit down to study, I can't study or retain most things. I have tried different study methods but they don't do any good either. Things were not like this before. I think I've lost the ability to study or I've lost my brain strength I have a lot on the line, and I am worried...but apparently not enough to study properly? I can't fail, if I do fail, everything's over. I know I shouldn't depend on my marks to decide whether my life is over or not, but it really is over if I fail. What do I do? I can't keep my phone turned off or on silent either for other reasons, other than that my phone doesn't distract me tbh.

[Q]How do you like search for which universities or colleges you want to attend?

I[15M] am currently attending IGCSE and I am just curious how you would like research and find which colleges that you want to study in another country. I know ways to narrow down the search such as Major, Country, Price and Which type of Qualifications that they accept but like what are the tips for searching about universities? Like the things that you wished you knew before? And also I saw somewhere that instead of taking international classes, if you learn the language of the country, do you get like reduced fees? Like I've seen some programs are free if you speak their language, for example German or something. I am aiming for Canada.

P.S: I am asking for like the tips to find the school myself, not recommendation for some schools but it's also fine.

Please bare with me, I took my Reading (5713) Praxis test today and I got an unofficial score of 158.

I got a little confused with the submitting the report process so when I got home I watched a video on how to submit. In the video it shows this multiple choice option to submit the report. I just got an option that says report with an arrow and cancel at the top of my test. Would this have submitted my test if I just pressed the support with an arrow and not the multiple question? I really don’t remember having that on my test so I don’t know if they changed it or I missed it

Do mental health problems come up on your background check, and would schools consider you a liability.

The title probably sounds worse than it is, but I don’t really know how to word it properly.

So I’m in college right now to be a secondary teacher, but I’m looking at starting therapy or getting a psychiatrist. I have a lot of undiagnosed problems and symptoms, including (what I assume is) bp depression, disassociation (possibly from ptsd), panic disorder, and possible psychosis from depression. I’ve been diagnosed with both depression and panic disorders since I was probably 12 or younger.

I’ve been too scared for a long time to talk about my problems due to trauma that stems from therapists and other mental health accommodations. I finally have the confidence to try and get some help, but now there’s another problem I’m scared of.

If I were to be diagnosed with something like ptsd, bp, or psychotic/disassociation episodes, would that effect my record and possibly my future employment as a teacher? It doesn’t effect my performance or leadership abilities, and if anything, teaching and leading is the thing that helps me the most. Teachers have been one of the stable things in my life, and I want to pass it on to other kids. I just don’t want to come out with my problems and have them stop me.

If school districts were measured based on the income that students earned later in life, as opposed to standardized test scores, schools would do a much better job preparing kids for the real world.

What’s measured matters. It informs what students are taught in schools and the programs put in place.

Sito Narcisse would like educators to stop using the word PROGRAM. Use PATHWAY instead.

If I could just influence us on changing um uh I’m I want to get some a change uh in a word that we use a lot in terms of our mindset.

We love, in our parish, to talk about programs. I tell people we should talk about pathways for kids because you know that we have programs but kids are trying to get into a pathway to become something. Uh and I think that that’s the shift that we have to think about.

So yes, we have programs, you know, whether it is dedicated to groups that people choose to go into but the question that we are trying to solve in a very equitable standpoint is that there’s enough pathways whenever a child chooses…

Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHcviT-I1Vo#t=2h19m46s & https://imgur.com/a/idWKmAz

He is suggesting that the word program isn't equitable and that the word pathway is equitable based on his explanation.

What do you think?

Idea to End School Shootings

It will take all of us, or at least 80% of us. You want school shootings to end? We need to organize, outside of our Unions. We need to take a stand. We need to hit them where it hurts.

We need to NOT show up for the Fall 2022 semester. I’m serious.

What are they going to do? Fire us? My district of 14 schools has 112 open job positions for August. We are desperate to find people to apply for any position.

My Union can’t do anything because it takes 31 steps to reach a Strike. I’m in California.

Then, we, as educators, demand that the Federal Government ban all AR-15 guns. We don’t return to the classroom, to babysit their kids, until the guns are GONE!

Thoughts?

Accused of cheating on an in class essay quotation analysis assignment

For my final exam one part was to analyze a quotation from a time in history. However my teacher read my analysis and said the grammer for an in class essay was too perfect and the timestamps in google classroom were sketchy. I don't know what say, I only kept one tab open on my computer and I asked if they could check my browser history to show I didn't copy paste anything. I even suggested that they run a plagiarism check or anyhing. The main reason why they were suspicious was becuase there was a span of a couple minutes in which I wrote six sentences. Could this be some sort of glitch or error. I have no words, I just remember writing what I remembered on a quote and moving on. I didn't cheat and this school is super important to me and I would hate get into trouble for something I didn't do. What should I do? What can I say?

Question towards education (higher education)

After several months of looking at information and asking questions around to my university, I feel like there a huge gap from my part where I just don't understand some choices and decision made on the way education is done.

To give a small example and try to propose my question with it

I took some class in a field and I took a language class for the fun of learning that language. The thing in most class (way more in language) is that, everything was based a lot on memorization, you have to learn and study a big portion of information by yourself and listening to class and then be tested on that. Being ADHD and OCD, memorization is like the WORST I can do in my general day to day life, I have to take several extra step to not forget the most basic thing.

The best example is in the language class, we had to learn, say, about 100-150 words by the mid-term, and then in the exam, ask question with the quite straight forward : "What is word [English word] in the [new language]?" or some very similar question. How is that a proof of knowledge and how is that a good way to test my knowledge? from 100 words that I had to learn what if its just happens I forgot that specific one? I could know 98 words, but just happened you asked the one I forgot, mainly because of the stress while being in an exam manner and also memorization "blockage" of losing time on a question and hitting yourself "I know this one, ugh".

And I have problem with this system, where, a lot of the way exam and learning is done this way, not giving the chance to any other way to show your knowledge than this "random"-ish system that only promote ONE way.

I also dont understand this idea of very short burst of "information", in a semester lasting around 3 months and so, you have to cram a lot, being under constant stress of managing your time and managing your learning of all the class you have, then get to an exam, after like 1 month of starting this learning, being in this super stress environment and long of 4 hours answer "binary" question and some few practical ones. Binary question based on that memorization, meaning you know it or you don't.

Then I question this idea of learning such very very broad information, that MAY seem important but at best, give you more information, being also strong at learning with "kinesthetic" (learning by doing, rather than reading, listening to it), I just dont see the point of some class. Like, I wanted to start an bachelor in teacher English as a second language, one class in the curriculum is "History of English language", I guess I just don't understand how is that important to teach English to know where the language is from, sure, can be interesting information, but its wont make me "better" teacher, its so broad and abstract.

I am also in this feeling where the school itself didnt care much other than some loose adaptation to help an "handicap" person, because no matter what, you need to follow this extremely rigid structure, full of bureaucracy at the end, its all based on nothing but what some people decided what is necessary to be X, quite based on broad and abstract ideas.

The next is no way of "bypassing" or "showing" your knowledge outside of those specific rigid structure. Again taking me as example, I have been for the past 10 years a board game teacher (like teaching chess) and also did some tutoring, I understand for a big part how to "teach", but school is not willing to give any kind of compensation towards "skipping" any class, because those knowledge is not specific to a class. I mean, I can understand the need to show my knowledge and skill, but to need fully complete a -ish 4 years curriculum ? really? I need to learn EVERYTHING? how does that make sense? its stupid, wasteful and ask ridiculous amount of money or energy, just because, no real reason than "I didnt learn X, Y, Z" but I learned "A, B, and C"...

Im quite frustrated, I can't seem to wrap my mind and unblock myself from this skewed mindset and worldview about school, and thus I cant continue going against a system which not care and at best is just meaningless bureaucracy (money and rigid structure). I dont want to be stuck without a degree.

The last one is work visa restriction on some country, a few years ago I went in China (its also true for MANY country) and by some headhunting agent I got engaged to be an English teacher, not having a BA they made me be in this grey area, they applied for me for a work visa but made sure the documentation of the rejection would not happen within the semester. After that experience I looked more in depth, to be legal, all you need is a BA, doesnt matter in what, I could have a BA in some random field. So why ask a BA? No, the idea of "we dont want to hire a nobody" doesnt stand, what is different from a person A without a BA but experience in teaching vs a person B with a BA but no actual experience? Also, what if I did my random X BA 15 years ago, why does it matter that I need one? does its really make a difference if anyway its doesnt change a DAMN thing to just be stupidly "legal" toward pointless, again, bureaucracy.
