Academic Shovedown and diactic teaching

I believe I see a pattern, but I'd imagine if it's a true phenomenon, someone else has named it and written about it. Can anyone tell me if this pattern seems consistent with what you see, and let me know if it is similar to an idea I can read about.

We identifify an achievement gap. We attempt to address the achievement gap with academic shovedown. The instruction becomes more didactic. The data stays the same or worsens. The cycle continues.

My Dream School

Hello educators 👋🏾. I've had this idea for a school that helps kids grow healthily for about 4 years now. I wanted to see if my thoughts make sense to others who work in that field because while I do have a part-time job teaching kids to code, I'm not getting an actual degree in education or children's studies or anything like that. The first thing I want is for it to be a boarding and day school, and make it a university town, but for elementary to high schoolers. My plan will probably cost outrageous amounts of money just for that alone, so I'm still stuck on whether the first branch should be opened back in Nigeria, or here in Canada. Getting the land would be much easier in Nigeria, but then there might be a problem with funding because I want to make it financially accessible. That would mean providing financial aid to those who get through the admissions process but can't afford it. The closest thing Nigeria has to free education is its public schools, but they aren't particularly good, to be honest. Private schools are better but can't compete with the average Canadian public school. At least infrastructure and facility-wise.That's why at least for the curriculum I'm mostly sure of how it should be. A sort of Nigerian-Canadian curriculum. I'm not sure if it's illegal to send kids to school before the age of 4, but we will start education from as young as 2 years old. Kindergarten, nursery 1, nursery 2, then primary 1. k-n2 will be focused on teaching them basic communication, practicing motor skills/writing, social values, and general trivia.

There's obviously a lot more to consider: Elementary, middle and high school curriculum (each have even more ideas), infrastructure, the admissions process, etc. But organizing my thoughts is surprisingly harder than i thought, so maybe i should make an edit to this post later?

Anyway, thoughts? And what do you think is important for establishing a good school?

Best path for someone looking to create stories.

Me and A friend of mine are currently working on an idea for an Adult animated series. I am the artist, and the co creator/writer. What Major would I follow in school to best help put me in the position to make this happen? When it comes to creating a TV show, pitching it, and being a writer/producer on the show. What is the best educational path for me to follow to where I want to go. Not sure if this is the subreddit to ask but I figured it was worth a shot.

Do most schools have a culture of teachers showing off about all the PD they are planning to do over the summer?

At my school — which talks endlessly about self-care — it is almost as if I should feel guilty for wanting a summer spent recharging my battery by enjoying my own family.

A large part of our final staff meeting was spent letting teachers and especially admin talk about all the amazing Professional Development events they are going to do over the summer.

It feels like an invidious sort of overwork culture that doesn’t value the effort required to just make it through a normal school year.

I’m so bad with educational institutions.

I’m writing this out of frustration because I’m at a loss for how bad I can be with educational institutions.

I failed maths twice and not because I couldn’t do it, but because I came at the wrong time (IGCSEs). Decided that I won’t go through with it again since I fucked up twice.

Graduated school at 15 and passed with only 3 subjects, enough to get me into a two year university diploma course. This diploma course took me three years to complete because I planned my courses horribly! Then I did a three year bachelor’s where I redeemed one year due to my diploma, so total two years now and it took me 1.5 years to complete because I rushed and worked my ass off for it. Even did an internship with a top 3 insurance company. Graduated with a decent 3.06 CGPA by age 21…

Just to find out that a lot of other universities don’t accept a bachelor’s that has a year redeemed from a diploma for a master’s programme. Because it apparently makes such a big difference right?

But I feel like I excel in other parts of my life, particularly in making money. I managed to start a small business that generates a good income that funds my current life.

I want to not give up on my education. I still kept on going because I know it’s important for my family and my own image, but now I just don’t get or care enough about educational institutions. I don’t know who I could talk to or how I could get my priorities straight for this.

Because on one hand, I want to focus on making more money and developing on my business ideas. But on the other, I want to at least have a master’s.

It just seems like most of my friends live such a normal/good uni life and I’m the one that doesn’t, yet I make good money compared to them.

Is there anyone that could relate to me or give me advice? Is this normal?

Leaving the education sector?

Has anyone thought about leaving the education world? I’m an assistant business administrator (12 month employee) Overall, I like that I’m behind the scenes helping students succeed, but I’m feeling like I’d prefer to work from home through a corporate company. I keep going back and forth with staying because of the pension and days off. Anyone ever leave and enjoyed it?regrets?

if i fail the class but pass the regents what happens?

i haven't been the brightest this school year due to personal issues, my grades and attendance have suffered greatly due to this. im a junior as of now, and i passed the regents for earth science, global history, and geometry last year and my english exam this january. i have an algebra II, chemistry, and us history regents to take within the next 2 weeks, and i feel like i will do fine on the chem and ush exam. the only issue is that im currently failing those classes, both with ~50. even if im failing, would i still pass the class if i pass the exam?

math is completely out of the question because i know i am NOT passing that one :/

IT in business (Masters Degree)

Hello, Im considering my options after doing my bachelor’s degree in Digital Publishing and there is one master course that seems very attractive, it’s IT in business and there’s a Big Data specialization however I’m new to this and I worry a Master course will be to hard for me even though Bachelor in IT is not required for the recruitment.

Should I send them an email and ask about what skills do I need for this course or do they teach from zero or maybe just learn on my own the things from the program - BMP, business app programming, Data Mining, Big Data, Data Science?

Parents don’t respect my decision regarding my education

Context: I failed 7th and only progressed because nothing transferred to the school that I had changed to at the end of the school yeah

And failed 8/9th grade and only got passed cause of COVID And only passed 10th cause of the school school shooting that sent my entire school back to virtual

I have also changed school systems 3 times due to a handful of stuff that happened

I’m now 17 and a jr in highschool with all f’s because I don’t understand anything on top of struggling with mental health and have been in summer school for 4 years in a row

I see this as a good decision as I will have little pervious knowledge going into the year as I would if I didn’t fail previous years and would be able to understand and retain the information better, only down side is that I’ll be 20 when I graduate because I have such a late birthday

Can I have someone else insight on my decision?

teacher taught 3 classes all year but expects students to know and complete final

to give some context. i am in a consumer economics class in my senior year. the first semester we only had this class once a month but the second semester we had the class once a week.

the very first class, our teacher told us that we would have one assignment all year and she gave us all the topics we would cover. we began to go through the topics in class and write about them as we learned. however, this teacher very quickly stopped coming to class. she taught us a total of 3 of the 15 subjects.

now she emails us and tells us the final is due in a few days and we can ask other teachers if we need help… the way i see it, if you are not gonna do your job, how can you expect us to do ours. am i jus being a baby? 😂 oh and by the way we need to this graduate. what do i do???

Advice on how to respectfully challenge a Scottish school’s decision to make my daughter repeat her first year of school

My child goes to school in Scotland. As far as I was aware everything was fine. She’s quiet and studious, very much enjoys school. Nothing was highlighted in any school reports about any attainment concerns, homework was always done on time (such as it is for a 5 year old), she was doing her reading, writing all seemed good and I thought everything was fine. On Friday her teacher told me they would be keeping her back a year along with another kid. This was a rushed conversation in the school playground in earshot of other parents. I have asked for a meeting to discuss. What can I do to prep for this? Are there any data requests or standard expectations of how the school should have kept us informed and engaged with us over the last school year prior to this bombshell? Are they even allowed to do this? I’m stressed and upset as you can imagine and trying to calmly assess what’s going on before the meeting .

The Internment of Japanese Americans (US WWII Policy) and Education

I saw a news story about a teacher introducing students to citizens who were affected by the internment of Japanese-Americans. Several community members, both young and old, were quoted as having never learned about this in school. My reaction to this kind of thing, which I have heard many times before, is usually, "where the fuck did these people go to school where this wasn't discussed at length?" My partner and I were both educated in unremarkable public schools; we remember this well. And I hate history.

I know 'how do we teach students about bad things the country has done' is a topic of some political sensitivity. My question: are people being sincere? Is it reasonably possible that there are Americans who weren't taught about this? Do there really exist districts that don't include this in the curriculum? Or are people just forgetting (mostly forgivable) or exaggerating their ignorance for social media points?

I understand why Newtonian physics is taught in HS, but is it fair to the students?

Newton described gravity...and in everything any student needs to know in virtually any way they might need to use their education Newton's description is sufficient. The math works, the application works, it suffices. But it is totally untrue. Einstein's description is just as accurate in every way...more accurate in truth but is (almost) completely opposite as to the why. The reality of gravity is incredibly difficult to explain or understand...why I get why Newton is so much easier to teach. Newton says that the apple falls because of a force called gravity that massive objects emit. Objects fall at 9.8 mps squared on earth because of this force. That is untrue. In reality objects cannot fall at all mathematically (in the way we envision things falling). They reach the ground due to paths followed in spacetime and, if anything, the earth leaps up to crunch the "falling" object. I see how the truth is daunting to teach when the lie is mathematically as solid unless the application is GPS systems or astrophysics, but might the staggering weirdness of why things really fall excite students to advance the knowledge of it?

Seeking Guidance after Graduation (Bachelor’s Degree)

Hello r/education Reddit! Today marks a significant milestone for me as I just graduated with a finance major, achieving a CGPA of 3.25. It's been a long and stressful journey. I went straight from high school to university. As a result, my experience has predominantly revolved around studying. However, I must admit that I'm feeling a bit lost at the moment. My family and I have moved to a new country, now I have the chance to pursue avenues that weren't readily available to me before. Yet, without any guidance, I find myself unsure of which path to take now. Within my immediate family, there isn't anyone who can offer the guidance I seek. My mother, a dedicated homemaker, got married early and wasn't able to complete her bachelor's degree. Unfortunately, my relationship with my father isn't strong either, leaving me without a reliable source of advice. Additionally, I am the eldest amongst my siblings. I turn to you now. For support and guidance. If anyone has faced a similar situation or has valuable insights to share, I would greatly appreciate your input. I'm open to exploring various career paths, further education, or any other suggestions that may help me find my footing in this new chapter of my life. Thank you in advance for your kindness and understanding. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences.

End of Year: Class parties

Are End of Year class parties a requirement for the teacher? I am really confused. I am on a single income and cannot just drop $50-$100 for a class party. Our solution was to have a movie day and some games.

To add to the problem, teachers have been told to not solicit parents for donations. When we have tried parties previously, the parents don’t contribute.

The administration is now reprimanding several teachers for not having a party. I’m not sure what to do. Can administration do that??

Long story short . Graduation is this Friday may 26th and student not allowed to walk because of a fight

Ok so this student is my little cousin. She is honestly a little sweetheart, never been in trouble, sports through out her whole school years, a honor roll student. So besides her being my little cousin, I was there when she was born, besides my 2 other family members . Besides the point, so this year (senior year) alayna 17yrf gets bullied pretty much while school year. Her bullies (a girl and her boyfriend) were in a scuffle with Alayna’s best friend. She gets in because the guy and girl are jumping her. Mind you alayna has a fresh torn ligament in her knee from baseball. So she’s trying to stop the fight, guy starts hitting my cousin (alayna) then more people jump in. The principal finally makes a way in (31,000) students in that school. Gets assaulted as well trying to break it up. So he’s pissed. Told every one of those student are banned from walking. Now I don’t support or condone violence…ever. And I’m aware it’s a privilege not a right. But is there ANYTHING we can do , we have 2 days. She’s a kid, she made a mistake by defending herself and her friend. But to take away her lifelong dream just like that? It’s ridiculous and I feel the principle took it personal and acted out in anger, not logical. I’d love to hear any suggestions, opinions even negative ones . My ears are open . Thank you if you read this, I know you don’t have to and I know you could be doing something else with your time. Much appreciated!! Hugs.

Waldorf Charter or regular Jr high?

My daughter is in 6th grade set to go to a Jr high for 7th and 8th. Problem is her current class is badly behaved and there is a lot of sexual harassment. Idk if I should let her go to the Jr high or try and get her in a better environment for those 2 years before high school. There is a Waldorf based charter that i can enroll her in for 7th and 8th. She complains about her classmates behavior all the time but wants to go to the jr high where her friends are going. Either way she'll eventually be back with these kids for high school. The quality of education seems better at the charter school too. What do you think?

Activating Learning: The Power of Prediction, Participation, and Perspective

Hi I’ve been getting into the idea of predictive learning and how that can more effectively help people learn. Here are my insights: 1. Prediction in Learning:The process of prediction can significantly enhance learning. Before learning new information, making a prediction and then updating this prediction upon receiving the correct information helps in solidifying the knowledge. This aligns with the brain's natural processing tendencies, making learning more effective.

  1. Active Learning:Actively participating in the learning process, like making predictions, leads to a deeper understanding of the subject matter. It engages the learner, making the experience more memorable and thus more effective.

  2. Personalized Learning:Making predictions encourages learners to engage from their own perspective or baseline. The learning becomes tailored to the individual, leading to a better understanding of the concept.

  3. Embracing Mistakes: Its important to accept that being wrong or having incomplete information is a part of the learning process. Recognizing and correcting our mistakes helps us update our mental models and deepens our understanding. This should not be a source of embarrassment, but rather an opportunity for growth.

  4. Learning as a Journey:Learning is a continuous process of growth and improvement, not a static state of being right or wrong. Tests should be seen as snapshots of one's learning journey at a certain point in time, providing feedback to help learners refine and improve their understanding.

  5. Natural Prediction in Interests:We naturally engage in this predictive, active learning when we are passionate about a subject or hobby. Recognizing and utilizing this process can make academic or formal learning more engaging and effective.

  6. Reducing Anxiety:Acknowledging that making mistakes and correcting them is a natural part of learning can reduce anxiety and create a more positive learning environment. It encourages learners to take risks, ask questions, and engage more deeply in the learning process.

being conscious of our learning methods allows us to take an active role in shaping our understanding and knowledge acquisition. This goes hand in hand with the idea of metacognition, which involves thinking about our own thinking and learning processes.

Reframing predictive models is an excellent strategy to optimize learning. It involves shifting our mindset towards the subject matter, which can greatly influence how we perceive and process information.

An example that perfectly illustrates this is reframing a subject from being 'boring' to providing 'key concepts' changes our approach towards learning that subject. This is simply consciously thinking these are key concepts. This positive mindset enhances our engagement and receptivity, thereby improving learning outcomes.

In other words, our cognitive processes, including learning, are not just passive recipients of information. We can actively shape them, and doing so can make a significant difference in our learning efficacy. This realization can empower learners, making the learning process more enjoyable, engaging, and effective. I was curious what people thought about this. Or what strategies could be used in helping children utilize these skills.

Spend all my money on uni abroad?

I'm a design student with some earlier experience.

I applied to 2 big design schools and 2 small ones(safety) in Europe and also my local uni just for fun during the standard application period, wanting to fulfill my dream of studying abroad. Unfortunately I got rejected from all of them except my local U despite having done well in my previous education (And also having completed a total of like 8 preliminary assignments at this point 🙄)

(Option 1) Its not like my local uni is bad, In fact its actually really good globally, It's just that I'm not too sure how much I can grow here... The uni is mostly local, and my country is small, isolated and not a very "design" advanced city. I also don't really like the local culture and heard the student social life isn't too good. It is however good in a sense that I'd afford it comfortably, and the school has high prestige. No on campus accommodation tho bums me out :/

So I went to a university fair where I found a couple universities in UK still accepting applications.

(Option 2) After all was said and done, I got an offer from both that I applied to, and one of which happened to be where Jony Ives went. If I went here I'd be graduating a year earlier! Problem is that it'll exceed my uni budget by like 20%, It's less prestigious or well known than my local U, and I've heard that they're money hungry - I'll probably struggle considering the time and money doing design requires. I can't tell if it'll be worth it.

(Option 3)The other option allows me to graduate in a year but honestly their rep is even worse having no track record with alumni and no showcase of previous works. Not even sure they have specialized lecturers for my specific course.

My parents say that they'll support wherever I choose to go. But obviously I'd rather not spend all the money 🫠 So now the decision is between me going for broke paying international fees to a uni I find slightly questionable, but fulfilling my study abroad dream, or to stay here, do 4 years for a decent U degree, save a bunch of money in the process and potentially use the money to go traveling.

Yeah its a lot

Tldr: sacrifice location and student life, All my money, or ROI/ rep.

older editions of textbooks okay for reference purposes?

Hello,

I am currently a special education teacher. Many of my students receive OT and speech therapy in my class. I have decided I want to learn more about those professions to enhance my instruction. Basically I want to understand more about occupational therapy and speech therapy so I can naturally weave stuff into my curriculum. I saw an OT textbook about working with infants through adolescents and a speech textbook about it working with infants through adolescents. I do not have a lot of extra money to buy these textbooks. I bought them but the older editions. I am sure there is newer research out there in these topics but I am hoping I am still able to learn something to assist my students.

Do you feel like purchasing these older edition books will give information that is obsolete? I am not taking a class. I just want to be more well rounded as an educator so I can bridge my instruction with some of the services my students are already receiving!

I’m aware that a lot of regular public schools in Texas do no drug test, but I was wondering if state schools, or, like, prison schools do? I’m not sure if they’d be different considering the context of where you are.

Thank you.

Do you think a member of admin would treat you differently if they thought you were leaving the school and not intending on coming back the following school year?

I ask because I have an admin friend who lately seems to be less friendly (at times no longer responding to or even acknowledging my texts) so I wasn’t sure. Other times it’s like she’s so chatty and friendly I wonder if it’s intentional…

Is inner city education worse than rural education? If so, is that actually due to progressive policies?

My dad and I often debate about education in a very political context. He recently said “Why inner cities which are controlled by democrats and have been for half a century, can't seem to educate their youth? Teacher's unions are a tool of the democrats and we spend more money than other nations, so why can't progressives point to the progress they've made where they are in control?”

I am curious if anyone has good resources for primary sources on education level breakdowns internationally, within the US, etc. Additionally open to people opinions regarding this statement!

Moving to Alberta, Canada in a couple of months. Going to start in oil. Then want to get a degree. What's the most efficient way to get it?

I'm a Ukrainian guy, 36 y o, who recently got his CUAET visa which gets me 3 years open work permit with a great chance of getting a permanent residency. Planning on getting in the oil industry to start with but it's not sustainable long term.

I'm a university dropout, and for a number of obvious reasons, I'd like to get a degree. Likely I won't be able to save enough to not work for several years to pursue a university degree. Therefore, I'm considering a 2-year college degree. I'm not well familiar with the Canadian education system but it looks like it'll be possible to upgrade the college degree to a bachelor degree at a later point. I'm considering CS/IT as I've always been curious about it and already got the fundamentals covered.

What would my plan look like? Working a year or two, enrolling into NAIT, then finding a relevant job, working there for a while and enrolling into a university? How realistic is to study at a university and work at the same time? How do COOP programs work? What's the best ROI plan in my case so I could get a formal education and land a job in the field?

Has anyone thought about using captchas to prevent AI plagiarism?

I’m not sure how it would work or if it would. My only thought is that captchas (being “are you a human?” tests) are different from AI-immune assignments that get students to display pedagogically relevant skills/knowledge that AI cannot display. A lot of us have been thinking about the latter. But I was wondering if somehow teachers/professors could create a captcha gatekeeper for an assignment to prevent AI plagiarism, or somehow integrate captchas into the assignment itself. Any thoughts or links welcome…

[SERIOUS] Someone for the love of God tell me whether or not you have ACTUALLY legitimately found or seen the following books “What Makes a Baby,” “Red: a Crayon’s Story,” “It’s Perfectly Normal,” and “Gender Queer”

Don’t attack me before having read below! I will say I am more inclined to believe that it’s not the case that these books are actually in the schools libraries specifically, and are instead actually just in regular libraries outside of schools, however, if they are in schools, I am likely to take a stance in opposition. But I just have no idea if they are or not! because these conservatives are super disingenuous!

I’m just so sick of the misinformation! So, I am of the view of HIGHLY doubting that there would be any books in schools which graphically depict any sex acts heterosexual or homosexual that are for children. There’s just no way. Lol

Now in a public library, I don’t really care. That’s a public library. It’s not a school library.

But again, if they are legitimately providing books which depict graphic sexual acts heterosexual or homosexual for children, I gotta say I disagree with that completely and they shouldn’t be in schools.

I just highly doubt that’s the case, but I have NO evidence proving either way. So if anyone could help me out and let me know if you have seen any of those books in your school libraries?

Again, I don’t care what is at a general public library as I highly doubt there’s any 4-10 or preteens going to public libraries unsupervised looking to check out any of these books. lol

Seriously, I am less likely to believe any of these hyperbolic conservative (mostly) women cry disingenuously about how these books are literally in their school libraries, when they are actually possibly in regular public libraries outside of school?

Intern instead of thesis

Im 30 and still havent even started a path to college. I used to not even know what "thesis" meant, and didn't fully understand what an internship was and originally thought it just sounded like a free-labor scam.

Back in highschool I would get anxiety at having to do even a 2 page research paper, so I know that most of you would think like *laughs in writing 20 page paper as a freshman *, but I am unfazed by physical work/OJT. A few years ago, I did finally learn about what both of those are, and learned that in some cases you could opt to do an internship instead of a thesis/research paper. Im wondering how far could you get with just interning? Are there some programs/college majors/minors that you could get even as far as a doctorate with just interning rather than writing even ANY papers?

Interviewing at other schools

Hello! So recently I have completed round 3 of interviews at my school district and i'm so proud of that. Right now I'm just doing the waiting game but I was wondering does it look bad interviewing at other school as well. I just had a great screening interview with another school district and of course I had the school that I am subbing for on my resume. But the principle that interviewed me mentioned that he knew my principle and obviously was very positive about my principle.
I know my principle knows that I want to be a full time teacher and wants the best for me next year but does it still look bad that i'm applying and interviewing at other schools? especially since the person that interviewed me knew my principle? I just want to be safe and keep my options open but I would take the school district I work for now in a heartbeat.

Positive reinforcement?

Positive Reinforcement.

How can you use positive reinforcement on a child who is received many warnings about being mindful about their body and surroundings but still constantly get hurt. It has been going for 3 weeks.

I got so frustrated that I let the child know that I am scared to take them on summer field trips. If there is a 4th week I will put my foot down and ask one of their parents to go with. But ik for a fact they won't bother to come. They NEVER have.

ANYWAYS

No shock today and with my luck they went home and had a limp but didn't tell staff. And I get a message from mom along with my much now regretted statement of " I'm scared to take them on field trips." (Let mom know it was regrettably mentioned)

I've already noted and know that they get overly excited before the transition to outside or new activites. I ask them to walk to the "calm couch" and to show me what relaxed and clam means. (If they are not running they are stomping and angry/screams because I am asking them to relax & calm down and even then the success rate is maybe 65%) But this morning and my luck, they run to the couch and adds in a head into the wall.

How do you turn running into the wall a positive reinforcement situation even after many warnings and told what behavior is to be expected? (*** please walk to the calm couch and relax) I've done my part to see what triggers cause these actions but its following through directions and listening isn't going though.

Maybe I say and do "I see that you ran into the wall, that's why the direction was to walk. Here is a hug,ice pack and an hour me panic observing to make sure you don't have a concussion"

Where do I add the "rewarding or reinforcing desirable behavior in order to increase the likelihood that the behavior will be repeated in the future"?(google)

SO

In my response, I told her "How does after a couple of reminders to *** about being mindful of how our surroundings can affect our body or the choices that we make can affect our body. We can have *** sit next to a teacher for a calm break until *** is ready to try again." But it's still the same strategy I have used just different places and clearly it's not positive enough. Obviously reminders only can go so far.

As for "how is his body awareness" he walks around and says genitalia terms like its nothing. (Not often and is corrected and told when is and where is the appropriate time to say those terms) He's well aware of what IS where and whats IS there. IM SURE he is aware of his body.

Discussing Gender in the Classroom

As the title hints, this may be a touchy/difficult subject to navigate. But I would like some of this communities ideas. How should we go about reverting the intuitive nature of the binary gender system in our younger education, namely elementary education? My reason for not teaching the spectrum of gender early would be that it’s dangerous, as statistics have shown, to allow that much influence on a child that early on. (Mentally)So how should we teach intuitively that gender is not binary up until the appropriate age to teach about the full scope of the subject?

Retrieving counseling records? (US)

Does anyone know if it's possible to get your hands on records/notes a school psychologist might have taken about you?

I had some pretty severe mental health issues as a kid, and it's only now that I'm an adult that I'm starting to unpack some of my early trauma. I remember constantly going to talk to my school counselor in elementary school, and I figure she must have written things down (observations, suspected diagnoses, etc). Anyone know if I have a legal right to these records? If so, how do I go about obtaining them? Thanks

Going back to school

I’m 31, some college.

I want an education but I am not consistent. In the midst of this I was considering WGU - BA mostly because I just want something under my belt to secure me in whatever comes my way in life.

There is really nothing I want to do other than sell my own body butters that I’m passionate about and love to do because I heal peoples skin issues. I don’t need a degree for that.

I’m mediocre in math, as much as science interests me it’s something I haven’t mastered but I was always good at physics interesting enough and loved it.

I considered software development but if I’m being honest I chose it because I see technology as the future, I have no real passion.

I love writing but there isn’t anything there for me career wise.

What are your personal opinions about my statements? I’m 31 and feel like a loser. I make a six figure income but I’m inefficient. I know nothing about financing, investing, portfolios…I’m just wandering the world on autopilot.

Career in medicine

Hi guys

I’m in a bit of a mess here. I’m a guy from Denmark who’s about to pick my college degree and I’m having som dificulties deciding.

I am so "privileged" that my grades allow me to pursue the degree I want - and I can actually see myself in many different fields. However, I am particularly interested in nutrition, exercise, sleep, healthy habits, health promotion, disease prevention, and so on. People tell me that with my interests, I should study to become a doctor, but there's something about that path that doesn't feel right to me. I don't really enjoy being in hospitals, and I have a hard time envisioning myself working with the terminally ill and severely sick people - instead, it's the healthy body and disease prevention that I find interesting.

That's why I'm exploring other paths. I'm considering programs such as physiotherapy, nutrition and health, public health, and biomedicine, but I still feel like I keep "coming back" to medicine. Maybe because I feel like it's the "safe" path to take, and because I fear "missing out" on knowledge if I choose one of the other programs and that might regret it later on.

Are there anyone here who has had similar considerations and can maybe share what you chose to do? Is it "overkill" to start studying medicine without ending up as a doctor, or should one choose a less "hardcore" program in that case? And how does one know for sure that they don't want to be a doctor? Is it enough to be uncertain, or can the desire for clinical work arise along the way?

And finally... is it worth entering the healthcare sector if you can easily see yourself elsewhere? I also have the opportunity to study law, economics, and political science - in fact, it's the "top people" in these fields that I look up to the most - but still, my passion for health is so strong that I find it hard to imagine not being able to work in that field. What do you think? Should one only enter the healthcare sector if they truly feel "called" to it? And is it more sensible to choose a more stable and family-friendly career in economics, law, or similar, and simply pursue one's interest in health on the side?

I hope you will share your thoughts, considerations, and experiences - I appreciate all inputs :))

question about alternative schools

okay so i currently go to an alternative school for a few mental health issues. the year is ending soon and the meeting with my district school is on may 22… i really want to go back to my original school & everyone on my care team thinks i’m ready. but i havent been great with my attendance, and everyone says that i wont be able to go back because i don’t attend school a lot. i’m extremely scared because the school i go to right now is so much worse than my district school, and there’s so many fights and so much bullying - a lot more than a ‘regular’ school would have.

i’m really scared, because i only have one year of school left before i go to highschool, and im scared that i wont be able to experience a real middle school before i go to highschool. i need advice and if anyone could help, that would be amazing

Health and nutrition

Is there anyone here who has experience with nutrition and health degress and can share their experiences? I’m very interested in diet, exercise, sleep, healthy habits, etc. However, I'm afraid that the degree is not really worth it. I actually have the grades to study medicine, for example, but I don't really have a desire to be a doctor, and I don't find the diseased body particularly interesting – in fact, it scares me quite a bit.

I know that "career guidance posts" are not allowed here, so I hope we can just start a general conversation about nutrition and the health programs and its role in the future.

Seeking Advice to Improve My Reading Comprehension Skills (As an adult)

Hi everyone,
I'm writing this post in hope of finding some guidance and advice. Lately, I've become aware of a struggle I have been facing with reading comprehension. My background did not allow for a strong educational foundation growing up, which I believe has affected my ability to properly understand and interpret written material.
When I read, it feels like I'm not absorbing the information the way others might. It's almost as if I'm reading the words, but the meaning isn't sinking in. I don't feel that the issue is a lack of vocabulary or understanding of the language, but rather an inability to grasp and remember the meaning and context of what I'm reading.
Does anyone else experience this? How do you manage it?
I'm not looking for a quick fix, but rather a way to improve my reading comprehension over time. I understand that it's a skill, and like any skill, it takes time and practice to improve. I would be incredibly grateful for any advice, techniques, strategies, or resources that have helped you or someone you know to overcome similar struggles.
I'm particularly interested in hearing about:
Techniques for improving overall comprehension while reading.
Strategies to remember what I've read.
Ways to stay focused while reading, as I often find my mind wandering.
Resources (books, online courses, etc.) that have been beneficial in improving reading comprehension.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to read my post and for any advice you may be able to provide. I'm eager to improve and grow, so your help is very much appreciated.
Best Wishes.

Slide Decks in Elementary

Hey ya'll. I'm an elementary teacher, currently SpEd/Reading Interventionists. I'm in year 10. Prior to Covid I was a classroom teacher. Around year 3 I got a smart board and used it for some things. Geometry was cool to teach on it. We did some cool activities like simulating glacial melt for the kids to learn about erosion. Most of the time the Board just sat there.

Now though, every teacher I know is totally dependent on them in the Elementary level. At a recent school I was asked to coach every teacher had a slide deck for the entire day. They spent hours putting them together. I was shocked. They didn't do conferences during silent reading. Math was entirely based on model and application. Even Morning Meeting had slides and a youtube video. I didn't get it.

Can someone explain this shift?

I grew up with the tech. We had to demonstrate a certain level of proficiency with it to graduate high school. I'm barely 30 and not afraid of technology.

Florida teacher investigated by DeSantis admin for showing Disney film

"A Florida teacher is under investigation by the state Department of Education after what she believes is a targeted attack by a school board member who took issue with a Disney movie shown in her classroom.

At a Hernando County School Board meeting Tuesday, fifth-grade teacher Jenna Barbee alleges school board member Shannon Rodriguez reported her to DOE for showing her students Disney's 2022 movie "Strange World." It's the first Disney movie with an out, gay character."

The DeSantis culture war continues.

Is private school that much better then public?

I had a terrible time when I was in school and it worries me that my kids or my close relatives would have the same problem. I know I went to a bad school but I'm not sure how much came from it being a bad school and how much was from being a public school.

Where I went was racist. A whole month was devoted to how my ancestors caused everyone else's problems. The behavior was just terrible. The teachers were either lazy and incompetent or completely overwhelmed with the environment. The education was so terrible that I literally got zero my senior year. Like I took precalculus and I still don't even know what it is because it was never even defined. It gets way worse too.

I don't want my kids to experience this but I don't know what is 'normal'.

How to convince my parents for BTech food technology?

Yo guys , I'm in a dilemma currently, actually apart from CSE, I'm bit interested in btech food technology course as well (or should I say more interested in it ), when i proposed my plan regarding this to my father , he straight up rejected it , with a disgusted expression in his face, he called it ' catering' wala kaam . Now how do I explain my father that it's different from hotel management .on the other hand he was trying to persuade me to take aeronautical engineering, i was like WTF, i mean he should know that one need to be exceptionally good in physics for that and my physics is rather eww / very weak .i don't even have any role model among my relative who have chosen this field of engineering (ese time koi bhi ristedar aur mehman kaam nahi aata )i don't any reference at this point to convince my father for it .

Or I'm the wrong one here? Is it foolish of me to go for such unpopular stream, should I just still to my cse wala seat ?

Math FAST testing in Fl and determining class level.

FAST is fairly new here. With the math changing - I am wondering if my daughter will be successful in accelerated 6th grade math. She scored a high level 3, 2 points away from a 4. Though maintains a B. In 4th grade she was in primes, but then the school bumped her down to regular math.

How would you determine success of a student based off testing vs grades? Or even knowledge.

Is there a way to find out how many current 2nd graders there are in the US?

Just curious if there are stats on the size of the current 2nd gr class. This is the “COVID Kindergarten” class—that is, kids who completed K in spr ‘21. Some parents held their kid back that year, which would make it a smaller class, but some parents opted for homeschool/priv or later had their COVID-year 1st grader repeat 1st gr, all of which would’ve balanced out that year’s class. Prob lots of things I’m not considering. Anyway, wondering if there’s anything notable about the class size from what we can tell atm. TY!

i have 9 GCSES at C grade

i have one as a B and 1 a C* and the rest are C’s. i’m finishing up college at the moment but have really struggled with the structure of the exams and a few teachers that talked about the moon and the stars. I failed most exams up until now even with weeks worth of in and out of class revision so am only praying at this point i end up with a national diploma, i have my first year under my belt but had to drop down from an extended diploma to increase my chances of achieving a 2 A-level equivalent. If i fail and only end up with 9 GCES and 1 A-level at a D grade; what are my employer chances? am i at an advantage or a disadvantage?? i’m really anxious about it and have struggled to find specific answers

I am just so lost and confused. I am also unable to go back to my old high school since I’m in a different state. How do I get experience?

Probably a dumb question, but here goes.

I'm looking to possibly move out of my parents house after I get my associate's degree, and I've been looking at jobs in my area that you need the associates degree for. I've looked on indeed.com mostly but I've also done some looking around on LinkedIn and some other places. All of the jobs that I see require either prior experience in the field or nursing degrees, as there are a lot of openings for nurses. I don't have prior working experience or a nursing degree, so I'm wondering, where do I get the prior experience?

Some examples of the experience I need is something like "six years prior experience managing teams" or "proven track record of closing deals and making sales" stuff like that. I'm not good at looking for jobs, and don't know where to look for answers or anything or what a starting career with an associate's degree looks like, so I'm wondering what it is. I wasn't ever taught any of this and my parents don't know how or don't want to teach me.

Where could I get the experience closing deals? What about the 6 years managing teams? Is there a common no experience job that requires an associate's degree that pays above minimum wage? Is a minimum wage where I should start when I do get a associate's degree and just try to get experience? Is prior experience in the field super important for all the jobs that ask for it?

Large public school vs. small private school for elementary children

I have been going back and forth for months about sending my children (grades K and 2) to a Catholic school that I will be working at in the fall. Their current school is very large with class sizes ranging from 22-28 and 4 classrooms per grade level. The new school would be 1 class per grade, with class sizes ranging from 15-26 students. My kids would be going to a large public high school after 8th grade. My main concern is the being with the same kids for so many years and then transitioning to a large school for high school. Whether you had a similar experience or your kids are doing the same thing, I'd appreciate any insight. Thank you!

Does anyone use digital hall passes? What do you or your building use?

In the building I’m in, we use Google forms (it’s fine but could be better). Just wondering what other schools use and how effective they are. Maybe also how much it is too.

We changed to digital midway through the year to Google forms (nothing used the first half) and it’s been decent. It’s free, which admin is a fan of, but I’m sure there are better options even if it does cost a decent amount.

So what do you use?

Timetable software that incorporates student management?

Looking for a timetable software that can automatically find conflicts (double booked students, teachers, classes), and allow for teacher/student movements and side duties to be added.

The small school I work for has been struggling with creating accurate timetables for classes, teachers, and students. I have looked into a few different products, Prime Timetable being the one that came the closest to what we are looking for.

The primary issue we are having is that every software package I have tried assumes that each class (grade year) will have different students with no crossover. And thus, there is no student management included (aside from tossing their names into a list). However, our school assigns students to their classes based on the current ability level of the individual student, making intermingling of the grade levels a frequent occurrence.

Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions for a piece of software that will allow us to manage everything? The most important ability would be to ensure that students are not scheduled in 2 different classes at the same period. The ability to add duties like opening/closing, lunch duties, moving students between buildings, to class schedules, teacher assignments, would be a huge plus.

How do you stay organized?

Hello Friends! As I am wrapping up this school year and planning for next year, I have set a goal for myself to develop a better system of organization for myself. Specifically, in my role I am the vortex for a lot of student information, scheduling, and planning and I really want to be on my game when it comes to keeping track of everything for all of my students and their unique needs.

I am curious, what are you all doing to keep yourself organized? How do you manage large caseloads of kids and keep track of everything you need to remember about them, everything you are asked to do and commit yourself to doing to support them, and how do you stop yourself from working into the grave to make it all happen?

If a threat, phone, internet, air-drop, social media…the entire district should be shut down and kids sent home or told to stay home.

TLDR: 162 school shootings in the US in five years is not enough to concern our society of the mental and physical safety of our students and educators.

I’ve been teaching over 20 years and it is an age old problem. Kids calling in threats to schools. We have entered an era where our districts need to take a stand and shut down whenever a threat is made. Generally, I speculate, it’s no longer kids trying to get out of a test. Instead it is a sophisticated anti-social, fascist, destruction mongering sect of the society making the “unfounded threats”. My school has had three such threats I am a water of this year, two in the last month. We get an email and phone call from the district explaining how they know the threat is unfounded and school will go on as normal.

We did have a code yellow for two hours on one of the threats because it was an air-drop from within the building. No person was caught with the air-drop incident, but the code yellow ended after lunch because those kids needed to get to their next class lunch be had or not. The admin did wheel carts around with food, but they ran out of food before they had visited half the classrooms. So again, move on to the next class. The code yellow began at the beginning of a 69 minute block, extended through a 30 minute lunch, and 20 minutes into the last 93 minute block of the day and students were escorted in groups, by classroom, to use the restroom. Of course PA all calls were made when a few of the 2000 students were still roaming after their escorted bathroom break and movement to the next class.

Until the public sees how many threats are made each year in our schools, and parents/families/bussing services are made to figure out what to do with their 3, 4, 20 times a school year when the schools shut down due to threats, nothing will change. In the past five years there have been 163 school shootings. Not assaults, not stabbings, not bullying, not sexually motivated crimes; school shootings, you know, with actual guns. 162 school shootings is not enough to make news for concerns. What is the number that will break the line of “being enough”?

The only way school safety will ever be taken seriously is if parents are called to pick up their children every single time a threat is issued.

Edit: but hey it is teacher appreciation week and a church down the street brought the teachers breakfast today. Not admin, not the district, a church.

Should education embrace AI?

More and more companies are losing millions of dollars due to the rise of AI. Duolingo, Buzzfeed News, Vice Media, and more recently Chegg, an online tutoring company is also getting crushed by ChatGPT.

In what ways AI can be beneficial in education?? In the future, will AI replace human teachers?? More and more students also rely to ChatGPT. I think AI will soon wipe out most jobs and take over.

Cultural Revolution in comparison to US today

Hello all,

After seeing the pepper spraying of the teacher by the student who couldn't stand the idea of giving up her phone during class, I wanted to share a comparison I see between what happened in the education system in China during the Cultural Revolution to what we are seeing in the education system today in the US. I'm not an expert in the field, and if there is anyone on reddit who may know more about the Cultural Revolution in China, their input here would be greatly appreciated.

During the Cultural Revolution, those representing academia or "brain power" were openly attacked by students on their school campuses. I can't share the link for some reason, but there are documents which support this.

I think there is a consensus that the issues of students and the general public attacking teachers were present before the pandemic, and were exacerbated after the pandemic. With this comparison being made, how likely is it that we are living in a cultural revolution, US style? If it is the case that we are living in such a scenario, it is scary to think about what happens next, as the Cultural Revolution in China coincided with the death of many people both inside and outside of education, all of whom were scene as elite or academic. Do you think we are progressing to a point where there may be violence occurring against the same demographic, and the increasing amount of school shootings are an indicator that the US is living in its own Cultural Revolution?

Answering this question may be helpful for how we can move past it based on how other communities moved past what we are seeing today.

Can Some Proficiency Warrant an Expedited Spanish Language Bachelor's Degree?

Hi all,

Fellow of 32 here considering going back to school. I attended university for 2.5 years ending in 2011 and believe all of my credits are expired.

Due to life circumstances, I probably spent over a year cumulatively in Central America and have developed a love for the culture and language. I'm currently a 2nd year apprentice plumber and interact with native Spanish speakers regularly on job sites.

I'm considering a foreign service officer/public diplomacy career path as a goal for what I'd do with a bachelor's degree. I understand that there may be some more relevant degrees, but being that I'm older than most folks going to a college/university for the first time, I'm considering options that I may be able to accomplish slightly faster if they can garner me the same end results.

I regular study Spanish on my own in different manners and am currently at a lower-intermediate level, perhaps higher. Would I be able to place into a Spanish language B.A. program and complete in perhaps in 2 or 3 years?

Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Problems faced by teachers and schools that IT can solve

Hello,

We are a team that are building an opensource educational platform targeted to schools and teachers. We are in the very early stages where we just gather problems faced by teachers and schools in their daily job and we'll start by the most easily solvable problem. Target are schools from primary schools up to high schools.

I would be very grateful if anyone can provide insights to the following questions : - What are the top 3 tasks that takes the most time for teachers ? - What are the top 3 tasks that takes the most time for school administrators ? - What recurrent problems teachers face in their daily job ? - What recurrent problems school administrators face in their daily job ? - What do you think should be the most important characteristics of a software teachers and schools administrators will be using everyday?

Is the length of education going to drastically shrink?

Used to take months if not years to learn how to use a logarithmic ruler. Now we just use a calculator.

It used to take months if not years to learn a new programming language paradigm and syntax.
With ChatGPT and Codex it takes days.

Could it be that the entire education is going to compress from 12-18 years to 4-5? I mean all we need is critical thinking, basic concepts, and ability to use power tools like AI, no?

STAR Early Literacy Scores

My 5-year-old son scored a scaled score of 949 on this assessment, 3.1 GE. They’ve taken it 3 times this year and he’s been 99th percentile each time. He is reading fairly fluently (and big words, such as paleontologist LOL). He taught himself to read at 4. He goes to Kindergarten in the fall. Will they likely request testing for gifted? I don’t want to push the gifted narrative on him by any means (and I realize this score doesn’t mean much), but academically (in both reading and math) he’s able to do well above Kindergarten tasks. I just don’t want him to go through another year of learning this stuff again like has been in PK. He tells me often “I already know all this stuff, mom. We do it so the other kids can learn it”

Any suggestions? I figured I’ll just wait until his teacher speaks to me about him? I’ll be an SLP at his school next year.

The U.S has seen an absurd amount of money going to school administrators

Since year 2000 the US has seen an 87% increase in School administrators

I think that's even a low number. Our country is falling more and more behind while these fat cats take money from our kids. There is no reason an elementary school needs 5 administrators. It was also around year 2000 that our education systems started to really fall off a cliff, so you do the math.

We pay an insane amount of money for schools that are failing. How can we change this and convince people this is over kill?

AI applications in KG Education

Dear Kindergarten Teachers,

I am a first-year computer science student at UoPeople with a GPA of 4.00/4.00. I am interested in exploring the positive impact of AI on human life, and my current research paper titled "The Impact of Newly Released AI Applications in Kindergarten Education: Exploring Untapped Potential" aims to explore the potential of AI in three key areas: improving teaching practices, supporting personalized and adaptive learning, and facilitating efficient decision-making.

To achieve this, I am conducting a survey that includes 20 questions, 7 of which are background questions to help me objectively analyze the responses, and 13 main survey questions related to AI in the kindergarten classroom. Your participation is crucial to the success of this research paper, and all data collected will be anonymous and no personal data is required. Wish you will enjoy the survey: https://questionpro.com/t/AX0aNZyDOA

Thank you in advance for your participation and valuable insights. Your contribution will help us gain a better understanding of the potential of AI in improving the quality of early childhood education.

Best regards, Fayrouz Abdel Rahman

Okay, I get it with ChatGPT now... Holy shit 🤯

Okay, so I'm finishing up a grad class and literally working on my final paper as I make this discovery.

I have to write two press releases for my grad class, one for good news, and one for an emergency school closure. Probably a good 3-4 hours to turn in really good work.

On a whim, I decided to try using ChatGPT; never even crossed my mind before now. The work has honestly been really interesting and really easy, and I only tried it today because of a conversation I had with a student. I've never even played with it, so I was honestly just checking it out for Ss & Gs.

I fed it the prompts for the press releases, and I shit you not- 20 MINUTES LATER I have two absolutely perfect press releases, as good as I could have ever produced on my own in 3 or 4 hours or more. Perfectly original, perfectly in my own voice.

And when I say perfect, I used to be a freelance writer and have written many many press releases for pay. So, definitely way good enough to charge a client full price for at least.

And almost all of that 20 minutes was spent tweaking what it gave me to give it my own voice and make it perfect.

I was shocked. But wait- there's more!

I'm also supposed to give those press releases to an administrator and ask them for feedback, and basically sit down and discuss it with them. Just what everyone feels like doing this time of year.

I told it to "pretend you are a high school principal, and I just asked you for feedback on the press release you just generated. Please give me feedback."

And it gave me perfect feedback, in a conversational tone, perfectly helpful and ACTIONABLE feedback... For copy it generated it's fucking self!!

Another 15 minutes to format that response for my paper, and I just finished at least 4-5 hours of work in 45 minutes, not to mention all the time I saved not having to conduct the actual interview.

And it's AS GOOD AS I COULD HAVE POSSIBLY DONE.

I've sacrificed no quality whatsoever. I'm fucking dumbfounded right now. 😳🤯
