Hello! I'm from Turkey, 21 years-old Software Engineering student. Currently, I'm in my 3rd year, and I hate it. My school, which gives me a poor education; the job of Software Engineering, I want to learn technology - hardware, electronics, mathematics, physics - so I can make innovations and inventions that are in idea phase in my mind; my country, for some reasons that will take time to discuss (I love Turkey and being a Turk, reasons are different.); I can not find an opportunity to take steps I want to take and I want to go overseas, discover and learn new things, go on an adventure.
I am thinking that, if I am going to get educated by a person/school/university, it must be best. I want to be in a better institution, an university which is in the top 100 universities list. And I DO want to get educated properly, and get my thirst for learning satisfied. But, right here starts the problem...
Overseas universities, especially top ones, require pretty different things than Turkish universities do. In Turkey, pretty much of the time it is all about an exam, a very bad designed exam, and that is all. It is pretty ruthless against people like me. But overseas universities require a social identify, academic success, reasons, motivations, goals, ideas, et cetera and recommendation letters (which is something that is pretty stranger to me); maybe other things too?
In my country, many of these qualifications are unimportant for people. Only thing that matters is school, and memorization, where people say just pass the exams. Fortunately, I learned to read in my early ages (5) and I was exposed to English language materials (books, games, songs) which had let me develop a rich English knowledge early-on. But, if only the universities was only requiring fluency in English.
And choosing a way to go, working for it, making decisions... How do you even choose an university? I know economical factors, which is a problem anyway; cultural, political, social factors, which I am knowledged about; but what about university itself? How do you know when an university gives you what you want? What makes them different? How do you know about their philosophy, if they are going to give me what I want or knowledge factor of education is same everywhere? How can you get an scholarship, is the general entry requirements are for scholarship offers, or getting granted a scholarship requires you to shine among people?
Economical factors... I was working as a waiter full-time before restaurants are closed-down in Turkey again and I worked for about 4 months. I earned about 10 000 TRY which is roughly 1276 USD; and taking an English exam to prove my fluency, taking passports for univ. students, getting a visa, making some shopping for myself (I don't do shopping until I need to. I wanted to save my money as a resource for starting my adventure), plane tickets; I probably spent much of my money already.
Time factor... I can't stand wasting my time any more; it is killing me. I lost my hair due to stress, and I don't have energy and motivation to do many things I want...
I did research for a long time, and I am still doing; but I am lost. Ah, there is also COVID-19. I am writing here, in hope of finding a good discussion, some advices, want to hear your experiences.
Currently, I think best of my options are learning Japanese and trying my chance at University of Tokyo; learning Korean (I think proving your Korean skill with TOPIK alongside English improves your chance of getting a scholarship) and trying my change at Seoul National University; or learning German and trying my chance at ETH Zurich. I have readen that ETH Zurich requires applicates to take exams for entry and I think this is a good opportunity because I will make up for my shortcomings if I dive my head in science, which is what I want to do anyway, and take an entrance exam. I have choosen this universities because of their written success. They are universities that are in top 100 among others. But, to try my chance at any of this I must wait for one year... Put the passing time aside, every one will say "This is your last year, get your degree.", but I do not want to take that degree, I think it makes me worthless.
Thank you for taking time to read, I'm looking forward to talking with some people.
