Recently I was hit with a culture shock when a math problem has gone viral and has divided people into two camps. The problem is 6/2(1+2). We have one side who answered "9" while another (including me) answered "1" and both are apparently correct according to their backgrounds.
I found out that in the PEMDAS rule Multiplication/Division are given equal priority and are solved by answering the one that comes first from left to right, the same goes for Addition/Subtraction. However, certain parts of the world (like where I was raised) follow a different (and apparently according to multiple sources, an outdated) take where we follow the same acronym rule but word for word. Multiplication over Division then Addition over Subtraction regardless of arrangement. I even tried it on multiple different calculators that I own and have access to and I have been given 1 and 9 on separate calculators repsectively.
So as it seems, some time ago the PEMDAS has been remade into the modern rule, however there's no simple way to change the education system for everyone everywhere thus leaving many cultures (like the one I was raised in) to still follow the apparently outdated take and have continued to teach others to do the same with no idea that there is a new standard take now.
Edit: No flair since I'm not which is the best one for this question.
