Discussion :- There was far less bullying in school, especially high school, than I expected, and I attribute it to three reasons.

Moved to the US in middle school. From watching movies and TV shows, and from all the anti-bullying posters etc., I got the impression(and I’m sure I’m not the only one) that there was a lot of bullying in schools in the US, such as name calling, beating, harassment etc.

However, I have not experienced bullying once in the US, and I’m a pretty nerdy, socially awkward, scrawny kid( aka a typical target for bullies). I think the following was why.

Advanced classes :- I was in all honors/AP classes, and while there were certainly students in these classes that I didn’t like, everyone in them was fairly focused on academics and learning. Essentially, they had neither the time and opportunity, nor the interest, to bully. There were a few delinquents at school, but they were in mostly on-level classes and even then didn’t bother random people, so I never even interacted with them.

Moving classrooms for classes :- In my old country, you sat in one class with the same classmates all day all year, and the teachers would come to the classroom. This made it easy for bullies to pick out targets and bully when the teacher wasn’t there. Whereas in the US, since you move classrooms, students don’t spend much unsupervised time, bullies can’t really pick out a target and bully as easily.

Smartphones :- people were on their phones a lot, and this is probably what potential bullies did too rather than bully.

Moreover, any bullying that occurred seemed to happen between people who were already acquainted with one another( in the same social circles), so as long as you avoided those circles/individuals, you were fine.

What do y’all think? I would love to hear your thoughts on this.
