Is there any existing movement to focus more credit hours of a degree on the student's major?

Apologies in advance. This is my first post here, and I don't know much about the community.

I am wondering if there exists, or has existed in the past, any movement to focus more credit hours of a degree on a student's major.

Example in case my wording made that too confusing. For instance, my major only required about 1/3 of my credit hours (about 40 credit hours) to actually focus on courses that were related to my major. This meant that 2/3 of my credit hours (about 80 credit hours) were for courses that were unrelated to my major.
